1 NOTE I remember Dad talking of Ho-boing on the trains. He was in his 50's when I was
2 CONT born and fell at work. Dad then stayed home and Mom worked in the fields with
2 CONT us kids. Dad was famous for his one pot meals. One big pot and anything he had
2 CONT to put into the pot was dinner, with a big hocake, or if Mom was not to tired a
2 CONT big pan of biscuits. No one that I know could make biscuits with a thick brown
2 CONT crust and so light and fluffy on the inside. On Sunday mornings she would make
2 CONT Chocolate Gravy to go with the biscuits. (Sometimes Mom used grapefruit to make
2 CONT her biscuits.

1 NOTE I remember mom as a caretaker of people. She helped me when my children were
2 CONT born she helped my brothers and sisters with their children at times. She
2 CONT helped Aunt Enda when her husband died. She helped take care of her mother at
2 CONT Uncle Coy's in Ga and then returned to take care of Aunt Rannie at Uncle Coy's
2 CONT some years later. When there was a need she just packed up her cloths and came
2 CONT to help asking not a penny in return. She cared for her husband Charlie untill
2 CONT it became impossible and he had to be in the hospital. He was 25 years older
2 CONT than her. It is to Lillie Mae Miles James that this work is dedicated.
1 NOTE Mom never learned to drive a car, many times over the years we tried to teach
2 CONT her to drive, she was only four feet, eleven inches tall.  Mom never could get
2 CONT the stick shit and the cluch going at the same time. Anyway she road the bus
2 CONT many times from Florida to Michigan, to North Florida and back to Tampa.  One
2 CONT time she became stranded in a snow strom and spent the night with the local
2 CONT police until my brother Jimmie could get there to rescue her.  Jimmie said
2 CONT he worried all the way from his home, but when he got there Mom was having a
2 CONT blast at the police station.
1 NOTE In her last years of life Mom discovered the airplane and loved to fly. She
2 CONT always looked forward to her flights from Michigan to Florida. Mom died a few
2 CONT days before she was to fly to Florida, but she got that last flight in as her
2 CONT funeral was to be in Florida.

1 NOTE William Miles Jr was possibly a brother of Thomas Miles b 1765/1775, who was
2 CONT probably the father of John/Jonathan A Miles b 1800, based on the fact that
2 CONT William Miles Jr and his family lived in the same area of SC, that is, what is
2 CONT now lower Florence Co  and upper Willaimsburg and Clarendon Counties SC.
1 NOTE The following reconstruction of the family is based on Williamsburg Co probte
2 CONT records, censuses of 1790 to 1910, cemetery gravestones, and some newspaper
2 CONT obituaries, hence, complete accuracy and completeness cannot be vouched for.
1 NOTE William Miles Jr was the head of a family in the 1820 and 1830 census of
2 CONT Williamsburg Co SC.  In the 1840 and 1850 censuses, his wife Nancy headed the
2 CONT family, so it can be assumed that William died between 1830 to 1840.  Next door
2 CONT neighbors were families headed by Benjamin Miles, Allen Miles Jesse Miles,
2 CONT which based on our experience as to census, indicates that they were all
2 CONT related.  How related we do not yet know.
1 NOTE William Miles Jr father, prob William Miles Sr, but otherwise not identified.
2 CONT A petition was filed in Williamsburg Co Probate Court in 1857 to sell or divide
2 CONT a small tract of land which William Miles Jr had. At that time, heirs were his
2 CONT wife Nancy and his children Benjanin, Josiah, Elizabeth "Betsy"(Mrs John
2 CONT McKenzie), Sarah (Mrs Kennedy Parker), Leonard, Ann (Mrs Spies Miles), Wright,
2 CONT and Mason (Mrs John Collins).
1 NOTE His wife Nancy _________ (maiden name unknown), born abt 1760 in NC. No other
2 CONT information about her is yet known.  Apparently she died between 1857 and 1860.

2 CONT Dothan, Al. to sell and going over on a bridge some horses spooked and Uncle
2 CONT Bud lost control of the car and the car ran off the road, killing William
2 CONT Joseph Miles. (After looking at a car like the one they were driving, I believe
2 CONT that the bolt, where the windshield wiper fastened above the window, was the
2 CONT source of the hole in William Joseph Miles head.)

2 CONT car wreck. I have land records, where Jimie Alice sold the property in Jackson
2 CONT Co., FL in the 1930's before moving to south FL., then she moved back to Jackson

1 NOTE      Willoughby Miles was a tall, thin man.  Willoughby had a beard in the
2 CONT picture and was a very pleasant man to look upon.  According to the people in
2 CONT Jackson County, Florida, Willoughby had a falling out with his brother William
2 CONT M. Miles.  I have not been able to find out just what the argument was about.
2 CONT William M. Miles was living in Walton County, Florida in 1880.
2 CONT      There is a creek in Jackson Coounty, that in the late 1880's had a large
2 CONT area just right for swimming.  This swimming hole was called the Willoughby
2 CONT Hole.  Since the creek ran through Willoughby Miles property we assume
2 CONT this was the reason for the name.  A descendant of Willoughby Miles came along
2 CONT and bought the propert and filled in the swinning area.  Rains came and washed
2 CONT out most of the filled area, but alas, the deep hole was gone forever.

1 NOTE I first started looking for the graves of Benjamin Miles and Rebecca Parker
2 CONT Miles in 1985.  James and Fanny Ray Reeves sent me up the road, north of Spring
2 CONT Hill Church.  Sandra High Johns McLin and I road everywhere looking. Up and
2 CONT down all the back roads between Spring Hill Church and Campbellton.  Many times
2 CONT I went back to Jackson County and stayed at the home of Fanny Ray and James
2 CONT Reeves and we talked about the cemetery. I was told that Phillip Farris was the
2 CONT person responsible for pushing up the headstones. I called Mr. Watson on the
2 CONT phone early one Sunday morning and Mr. Watson said he did not know about a
2 CONT Cemetery on the Property (he had bought the property).  It was a relief when
2 CONT I was told that June Miles had pushed the finding of the cemetery, through the
2 CONT County Com. meetings, and that the Cemetery was found.

1 NOTE There are so many nice things to say about Aunt Veleta that I really don't know
2 CONT how to start for fear of leaving out something. Ruth Alsobrooks is working on a
2 CONT drawing of the old log home that everyone remembers with much fondness.  The
2 CONT log house was built in a L shape and the well was out from the porch that
2 CONT wrapped the back of the house (I was very young, but that is my memory).
1 NOTE Aunt Veleta always wanted us to come back to see her, but that was a long trip
2 CONT and she came to South Florida to see us one time. Aunt Veleta could talk and
2 CONT talk she did, she had a opinon on everything, I loved that part of her. When I
2 CONT married she used to say "you come back and bring Charlie to see me, I don't get
2 CONT to see him very often", and I did.
1 NOTE Aunt Veleta was a small lady, with the strength of a giant. Mowed her yard
2 CONT herself, and could pull a cake out of her frezer for unexpected company.
2 CONT Butternut cake was my favorite, and the colored pears that she canned, along
2 CONT with the corn relish.  She made quilts and did all the work by hand. I would
2 CONT like to have one of the quilts, if I could find one.
1 NOTE My sister Helen Potter has her on video, she had told Aunt Veleta to stand in
2 CONT her yard and Aunt Veleta stood so still it is almost a photograph on video.
1 NOTE Aunt Veleta was a small child when her parents died (I have not found where
2 CONT John Auston, her father is buried, but for some reason I think Fannie Brigham
2 CONT James Auston was taken back to Christain Grove to be buried.) and she was
2 CONT raised by Alexander "Uncle Sandy" Brigham.  Dad told us that Aunt Veleta was a
2 CONT very beautiful young lady, we do not have a picture of her as a young child or
2 CONT a young lady.
1 NOTE Aunt Veleta was devout christian  and a member of the Pligrims Rest Baptist
2 CONT Church.  When Aunt Veleta was being taken to the hospital she prayed
2 CONT "Dear Lord if you can't stop the pain take me Home".

1 NOTE This is to acknowledge your letter of March 10th concerning the study being
2 CONT made of discharges from the Baptist Orphanage at Troy.
1 NOTE I located Henry Swanson Toole in Eufaula.  He is a brother of John Franklin
2 CONT Toole and Ella Toole, whose schedules you sent to me to be filled out.  Henry
2 CONT Swanson Toole stated that he does not know where his brother, John Franklin is.
2 CONT The last information he had from him was that he was in Athens GA.  He also
2 CONT stated that John Franklin Toole had two families.  Mrs Elsie Toole, his first
2 CONT wife, and five children live in Sturgis, Mississippi.  John Franklin separated
2 CONT from this family years ago.  His second wife, Mrs Inez Toole, and one little
2 CONT boy, lives in Gulfport, Mississippi.  John Franklin is also separated from this
2 CONT wife.  John Franklin is a World War I Veteran and was wounded in France and
2 CONT draws a compensation of $30.00 per month.  Henry Swanson Toole stated that John
2 CONT Franklin moved around a good deal and did not stay in one place very long.
1 NOTE Henry Swanson Toole Stated that his sister, Ella Toole, was Mrs Ella Cook and
2 CONT had one child.  She lives in Montgomery.  Her husband is a candy salesman.  He
2 CONT did not know Mrs Cook's address.  Mr Henry Swanson Toole stated that his mother
2 CONT died first and soon after, his father.  There were five children, Henry Swanson
2 CONT Toole, Hattie Lee Toole, Hettie C Toole, along with the two younger children,
2 CONT John Franklin Toole and Ella Toole.  All were sent to the Baptist Orphanage
2 CONT which was the located in Evergreen.  The sister Hattie Lee, is not living.  The
2 CONT sister, Hettie C, is Mrs Andrew Suggs and lives in Ozark.  Her husband works in
2 CONT the cotton mill.  Mr Henry Swanson is quite a dissipated man and has no
2 CONT employment.  His wife works in the cottonmill and supports the family.

2 CONT were being chased by the Union Soliders and they ran their horses across a log
2 CONT over a ravine one man tried to walk his horse across and he fell in and was
2 CONT killed, the Union Soliders turned away and the CSA got away.

1 NOTE      The Miles Elementary School was named in memory and in tribute to Frank D.
2 CONT Miles, who had dedicated thirty years of his life to education.  Mr. Miles
2 CONT served as a staff member in the capacity of Assistant Director of
2 CONT Administration.  He had attended the university of Florida.  University of
2 CONT North Carolina and George Peabody College.  The educational contributions and
2 CONT values given to the field of education by Frank Miles are many and varied and
2 CONT the spirit of his dedications linger within the halls and classrooms of the new
2 CONT building.
1 NOTE      We are happy to dedicate the Miles Elementary School because of the find
2 CONT cooperation of its patrons and the pride we hold for its principal. All these
2 CONT things lend to the image of our friend and colleague Frank D. Miles, whose name
2 CONT and contributions are worthy of emulation.

1 NOTE A. C. Miles was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFC)
2 CONT and a total of 18 Medals during Air Force Career.  One for
2 CONT delivering ammo and picking up wounded at an Army outpost that was under attack.
2 CONT (The aircraft took a lot of hits from enemy gunfire.)  The second DFC was for
2 CONT Air Dropping ammo to a beseiged outpost and strafing enemy troops. (The air
2 CONT craft took over 100 hits while on this misson.)  Awarded 5 Air Medals for
2 CONT different  hazzardous missions while under enemy fire.  Had to crash land the
2 CONT aircraft on two different missions in Vietnam.  A.C. flew seven years with
2 CONT O'Shield, and many times piloted the plane.  Many times flying high above the
2 CONT fighting, A.C. and O'Shield would hear on the radio of a downed pilot or a
2 CONT wounded soldier, they would only look at each other before going down to pick up
2 CONT the soldier amist heavy gunfire. (A.C. said he was scared lots of times, they
2 CONT just did what they had to do).

1 NOTE After the Air Force A.C. lived in Orlando, Florida (1977-1986) where he worked
2 CONT for Holiday Inn, which started Showbiz Pizza, where  A.C. was District
2 CONT Manager.

2 CONT A.C. loved to fly and after retiring became a civilian pilot.  He also loves
2 CONT horses, Indian Paint's, and breeds a red and white, seven year old sorrel,
2 CONT "Mr. Paladin". He also likes to work cows with the horses and a favorite
2 CONT pastime is trail riding.
