Research in 1930's suggested that he was the grand- 2 CONT son of Richard who arrived in Pa. in late 1600's but I believe that 2 CONT this Samuel also born 1739 married Catherine Wister and is not the 2 CONT same one. 2 CONT "Genealogies Of Ky. Families" Vol.3 and "The Hoosier Connection" were 2 CONT my origional sources but they both have many errors. It is interesting 2 CONT that Helen Miles Bradshaw in "Hoosier Connection" called him Enos 2 CONT Samuel Miles. This is the only place that I have seen this.Samuel is 2 CONT listed as living in Lancaster,Pa. and then to Virginia and 2 CONT subsequently to Woodford Co.,Ky. Soon he and part of his family moved 2 CONT to Shelby Co. were they purchased land on Six Mile creek. He and his 2 CONT descendants were millers as attested to in his will from the Shelby 2 CONT Book B 1804-1811 Will Book 2 p.438. Recorded 4-15-1811 in which he 2 CONT leaves his mill to Benjamin who is "impotent". The will mentions wife 2 CONT Sarah and sons Evan and Samuel. 2 CONT In "The Hoosier Connection" Ms. Bradshaw asserts that "Samuel was 2 CONT born in Wales in 1740. He came to this country and settled in 2 CONT Baltimore. He was a machinist". The D.A.R. Patriotic Index Centennial 2 CONT Edition Part II page 2021 lists "Miles,Samuel b. WL(Wales) d.a. 2 CONT 4-15-1811 m. Sarah James Sol. CL( Continental Line) Va.(Virginia)." 2 CONT "The Hoosier Connection " states that Samuel" was put in charge of the 2 CONT manufacture of small arms." 2 CONT In her book Ms. Bradshaw states "The family left Baltimore after the 2 CONT Revolution for Lancaster , Penn.. The Miles family all started west 2 CONT stopping in Lynchburg, Virginia and then on to Versailles,Woodford Co. 2 CONT Ky. After sojourning here for a few years they went on to Indiana." 2 CONT According to her they moved over discust with "the institution of 2 CONT slavery." 2 CONT With the exception of Lois Myer most of the researchers feel that 2 CONT Samuel Miles was born in Wales, but then research tends to be 2 CONT incestuous and like most of history what is stated as fact but not 2 CONT proven frequently becomes fact. Sheila Johnson of Grand Junction ,Col. 2 CONT is actively researching the Miles family and has been most helpful in 2 CONT offering a different point of view. The Miles family is also found in 2 CONT South Carolina as well as Pennsylvania and Virginia in the early 2 CONT years of this nation. Many Mileses became Baptists. In the early years 2 CONT the Baptists and Quakers were closely related and certainly many 2 CONT Quakers became Baptists. In Samuel R. Miles research there is a tract 2 CONT entitled "Early Welsh History" which states that"The Quakers and 2 CONT Baptists had a great many things in common and we find a great many 2 CONT Quakers becoming Baptists...The first meeting house of the First 2 CONT Baptist Church of Philadelphia was built by Keithian Quakers in 1692." 2 CONT Richard Miles the supposed progenitor of our Samuel Miles is said to 2 CONT be a Keithian Quaker and his father James became a Baptist. 2 CONT There was also a strong Quaker presence in South Carolina and the 2 CONT James family were leaders in the Quaker movement in South Carolina. 2 CONT Early on in the 1600's the first Miles 2 CONT family in America were the Quaker brothers Richard,Samuel, and 2 CONT Griffith sons of James who emigrated from Wales to Pennsylvania in 2 CONT 1683. Ms. Myers feels that Samuel was the grandson of Richard. Richard 2 CONT did have a grandson Samuel born 1740. He was a brigadier general who 2 CONT married Catherine Wister and is not the father of our Isaac. 2 CONT The fact that Evan C. Miles(born 1833) was active in the Episcopal- 2 CONT ian church and that "The History of Dearborn Co...." states that 2 CONT Isaac(Jr.) converted to the Baptist faith brings into question our 2 CONT descendency from Quakers. However, Ms. Johnson has related to me that 2 CONT " I suspect that the Miles researchers have had a mind set that Samuel 2 CONT came from PA. and may have ignored the possibility that he was born 2 CONT elsewhere...maybe one of the Carolinas. On page 52-54 of "Americans 2 CONT from Wales" there is a little information about the southern Welsh 2 CONT colonies. I was paticularly interested in the comment about the anti- 2 CONT slavery sentiments of the early Miles family and this was echoed in 2 CONT "Forks of Elkhorn Church" by Ermina Jett Darnell on p. 39.'In the late 2 CONT [1830's] the abolitionists increased their activities, and many slaves 2 CONT were running away. Henry Clay says that up to this time there had been 2 CONT 'progressive melioration' in the treatment of slaves, but they were 2 CONT becoming so rebellious that their privileges had to be curtailed. One 2 CONT minister told of being constrained to use firearms to bring one to 2 CONT obediance, and in this he was upheld by all the congregation except 2 CONT Isaac Miles.' This Isaac, of course, is your ancestor. My thought is 2 CONT that perhaps Samuel Miles may have removed from the Carolinas at least 2 CONT in part because of the slavery issue. I also took note that a leader 2 CONT in the So. Carolina colony was James James." 2 CONT Henry Clay by the way was an active member of The Church of 2 CONT the Assumption- the Episcopal church in Frankfort, Ky. were Evan C. 2 CONT Miles had his first two children baptised and were Rev. John Norton, 2 CONT who married Evan both times, was pastor. 2 CONT In a brief review of the International Genealogy Index of the LDS 2 CONT a Samuel Miles was christened in Tetbury, Gloucester, England on Dec. 2 CONT 27, 1740. Also, an Evan Miles married Mary Williams on Feb. 9, 1739 2 CONT in Llandaff, Glamorgan, Wales. These are other potential sources for 2 CONT Samuel Miles. 2 CONT According to research by E.E. Miles dated 4/4/1936 in the LDS files 2 CONT " In 1786 Samuel Miles settled 340 acres of land in Franklin County, 2 CONT Virginia. In 1795 Samuel Miles is listed as having only 240 acres 2 CONT which he continued to hold until 1798. From 1799 on the name of Miles 2 CONT does not appear again in the Franklin Co., Virginia tax books. 2 CONT The will of Samuel Miles is recorded in Will Book #2, page 438, on 2 CONT file in the courthouse of Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Ky. It was dated 2 CONT March 11, 1811 and probated April 15,1811. It names his wife Sarah and 2 CONT sons Evan and Samuel as Executors. Also says his son Benjamin is 2 CONT "impotent" and is to be supported. The witnesses were James Christie 2 CONT ,Sr., James Christie, Jr. and Israel Christie." 2 CONT I find that the Christies,Lewis, and Bohannan families are frequently 2 CONT listed in legal documents and were intermarried to the Miles family. 2 CONT By following these families we may get to the roots of Samuel Miles. 1 NOTE From Pennsylvania Archives Series 2, Vol.2,pg 174-192-compiled by 2 CONT Miss Lois Myer 1930's. 2 CONT Genealogies of Kentucky Families. 2 CONT The Hoosier Connection by Helen Bradshaw. 2 CONT Early Ky. His parents 2 CONT Isaac Miles,Jr. and Elizabeth Miles were first cousins.Evan was a 2 CONT teacher. I am unable to find documentation of what schools he attended 2 CONT but his brothers went to Franklin college in Indiana. Evan was married 2 CONT in 1856 to Charlotte Quinn. Charlotte's family were residing in 2 CONT Franklin Co. Ky. and she was born in Utica New York. Charlotte died 2 CONT 5-19-1858 of consumption at the residence of Isaac Miles Esquire of 2 CONT Aurora as per an obituary in the Lawrenceburg Register dated 6-4-1858. 2 CONT On 12-25-1859 he married Annie Malinda Burns the daughter of Patrick 2 CONT Burns and Melinda Hughes. Again he was married by the Reverend John 2 CONT Norton of the Episcopalian Church of the Assumption of Frankfort Ky. 2 CONT The church had an orphanage at the time and I speculate that Evan C. 2 CONT may have taught there.Evan's first two children were baptised at the 2 CONT church. I can find no civil war records of service by Evan C. Miles 2 CONT but he named his first son born 5-22-1861 Jefferson Davis Miles making 2 CONT fairly obvious his sentiments. This is not so easy to understand as 2 CONT two of his brothers served in the Union Army and the family was 2 CONT apparently(from several family history sources) strongly anti-slavery. 2 CONT However, at the time of the beginning of the Civil War Evan C. Miles 2 CONT was living in Frankfort. He had several cousins living in Franklin 2 CONT and Woodford County who were prominent businessmen, slave owners, and 2 CONT one of whom rode and died with Morgan's Raiders. 2 CONT The 1870 census finds Evan C. Miles in Oldham County, Ky. which is 2 CONT between Franklin County and Jefferson County. An Evin(sic) Miles first 2 CONT appears on the Oldham County tax list in 1871. He is enrolled in the 2 CONT militia. The 1870 census lists him on August 10 on page 10 in the 2 CONT Ballardsville Precinct. At that time he has 5 children-Jefferson, 2 CONT Minnie,Rosie,Samuel and John. No Isaac is listed. 2 CONT In the 1871 city directory for Louisville Evan C.'s old friend 2 CONT Rev. I was very excited when I discovered the 1880 census 2 CONT for Louisville Ky. It was in the handwriting of Evan C. Miles! 2 CONT He was the ennumerator for census district 151 Jefferson County, Ky. 2 CONT in June of 1880. It was my first genealogical find at the start of 2 CONT my research. My only clues were Aunt Minnie,Uncle Jeff and Uncle 2 CONT "Nambo". My grandfather thought that his father's name was Patty and 2 CONT indeed that was the name that he played baseball under as well as 2 CONT the name under which he was buried. But, there it was in front of me. 2 CONT Evan C. Miles. Wife Annie M. My living 2 CONT great aunts would tell me nothing except that the family was Episco- 2 CONT palian and had converted to Catholicism after a serious illness in 2 CONT which nuns who lived "next door" had cared for the family. 2 CONT Evan C. This now infamous cemetery is located at the 2 CONT end of Broadway next to the beautiful cave hill cemetery. 2 CONT Unfortunately, the cemetery was origionally liscensed to hold 15,000 2 CONT but eventually over 80,000 souls were buried there- many on top of 2 CONT older graves. Miles was one of the most successful descendants of 2 CONT Samuel Miles. He was born in Woodford County on 12-24-1827, the son of 2 CONT Samuel Isaac Miles and Elizabeth Hawkins. In " Biographical Sketches" 2 CONT on page 819 there is the following account, apparently written while 2 CONT John E. was living. 2 CONT " John E. Miles, born in Woodford Co., Ky., December 24, 1827, is 2 CONT the second son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Hawkins) Miles. He was reared 2 CONT in woodford Co. and educated at the common schools. His father was a 2 CONT miller, owned the old mill that stood in Millville, Woodford Co., and 2 CONT there John E. commenced to work when he was a small boy. When Samuel 2 CONT Miles died John E. bought the mill and made money out of it with which 2 CONT to pay for it. He operated this mill until 1873, when he moved to 2 CONT Frankfort, where he had, in the meantime, built the City Mill, which 2 CONT is the largest in the city, has complete roller process attached, and 2 CONT makes 250 barrels of flour a day. John E. Miles married in 1850 to 2 CONT Emily Payne, of Marietta, Ohio, daughter of Norman Payne and Lydia 2 CONT (Hussey) Payne, ans seven children blessed this union, five living: 2 CONT James N., Effie S., Alma S., Iva N., and Samuel I. Iva N. married 2 CONT Guy N. Emmitt, of Louisville, Ky. and had two children John M. and Guy 2 CONT N. She is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Mile's wife died in 2 CONT 1876, a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Miles next married, in 2 CONT 1877, Miss Annie Hawkins, of Woodford County, daughter of I.K. and 2 CONT Sarah (Hall) Hawkins. One child has blessed this union, Mary K. Mr. 2 CONT Miles' paternal grandfather, Isaac, was born in Virginia, was a miller 2 CONT , and immigrated to Kentucky at an early day, and it is said built the 2 CONT first mill in the State. James N., the eldest son of J.E. and Emily 2 CONT (Payne) Miles, was born in Woodford County, Ky., March 9, 1852; was 2 CONT educated at Midway College and finished at the University of Kentucky 2 CONT at Lexington, Ky. He married April 26, 1876, Miss Mary C. Franklin, of 2 CONT Frankfort, daughter of Walter R. and Agnes (Brawner) Franklin. Five 2 CONT children were born to them--three now living: Franklin H., Norman P., 2 CONT and Robert S. James N. is a member of the Christian Church; his wife 2 CONT of the Methodist South. James N. is a full partner in the mill, and 2 CONT the style of the firm is Miles & Son. John E. Miles owns 200 acres of 2 CONT land in Woodford County; is a member of the Christian Church, as are 2 CONT also his wife and his daughters, Effie S. and Alma S. He was a 2 CONT volunteer in the Mexican war, and served as a private in Thomas F. 2 CONT Marshall's company under Col. Humphrey Marshall." 2 CONT Additional information from Railey's "History of Woodford County" 2 CONT states that his " J.E.M. brand of flour was very popular for thirty or 2 CONT more years and is now used by a Lexington Milling Company and retains 2 CONT its popularity." 2 CONT In the "Register of the Kentucky State Historical Society" on pages 2 CONT 128 and 129 the additional information is found. 2 CONT " JOHN E.MILES...was one of the oldest citizen's of Frankfort. He died 2 CONT May 12th, 1908, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Ivy Emmett in 2 CONT this city...He was a soldier in the Mexican War and was often 2 CONT consulted in regard to the battles of Buena Vista and Palo Alto, and 2 CONT the old forts reared by the Americans in Mexico...Mr. Miles was a 2 CONT progressive, intelligent kind man; he established a reputation 2 CONT throughout America as a manufacturer of the finest flour on two 2 CONT Continents....As a Kentucky miller, he visited Europe and could write 2 CONT and talk of his travels in the most entertaining style, and of his 2 CONT large sales of flour in different cities abroad. At one time he was 2 CONT one of the wealthiest men in the city. He bought and lived in many 2 CONT years, one of the famous old homes of the City on St. Clair Street 2 CONT erected by Peter Dudley, one of the pioneers of the State....A few 2 CONT years ago Mr. Miles went out of the manufactory of flour. Later he 2 CONT sold the old home to Rogers Brothers, and they erected on the site, the 2 CONT present furniture store...Mr. Miles was twice married. His first wife 2 CONT was Miss Emily Payne, an Eastern lady, and a teacher. She died and he 2 CONT married a second time Miss Annie Hawkins...noted for her beauty and 2 CONT culture... Among the first men in Frankfort who joined the Ky. State 2 CONT Historical Society, when reorganized in 1897, was Mr.John E. Miles--__ 2 CONT and we remember with grateful pleasure his encouragement in the cause 2 CONT , and his interest and aid in the upbuilding, and success...He was a 2 CONT constant reader of the Register, and a promoter of its prosperity, and 2 CONT we mourn the loss of such a genial, helpful spirit...His funeral from 2 CONT his church was one of the largest that has been seen in the city in 2 CONT many years. His grave was covered with rare and costly flowers, 2 CONT tributes of love and respect, from his own and distant cities. He 2 CONT was the last survivor of the Mexican War in Franklin County: His 2 CONT grave is not far from the famous "Bivouac of the Dead" that is under 2 CONT the shadow of the military monument erected to the memory of the 2 CONT heroes of Buena Vista and Palo Alto.'The muffled drums sad roll has 2 CONT beat the soldier's last tattoo'." 2 CONT He was obviously a man repected as much for his character as for 2 CONT his worldly success. Miles 2 CONT and Annie Hawkins. The family was successful in business and became 2 CONT one of the more prominent "Bluegrass" families in the days prior to 2 CONT the Civil War. According to Railey in his " History of Woodford County 2 CONT ", Samuel rode with the famous John Hunt Morgan on the side of the 2 CONT Confederacy. 2 CONT It was typical of Kentucky in that the Miles family was noted 2 CONT as anti-slavery and according to several accounts Isaac Miles, 2 CONT the grandfather of Samuel I., Jr. spoke against slavery. In fact in 2 CONT her book "The Hoosier Connection" Ms. Bradshaw claims that the Miles 2 CONT family moved to Indiana in the 1820's in protest over slavery. But 2 CONT some of them stayed and of those who were successful there is 2 CONT evidence that in the Bluegrass region they were slave owners. 2 CONT This author's great great grandfather was born in Indiana but he , 2 CONT Evan C. Miles, moved back to Kentucky in the 1850's and in 1861 2 CONT named his first born son Jefferson Davis Miles, most likely in 2 CONT support of the South. Two of his brothers fought with the Union Army. 2 CONT The question is was the support one of slavery (actually a later issue 2 CONT in that war), of States Rights or was Evan swayed by his contact 2 CONT with his cousins at the time of the outbreak of the war? 2 CONT In any event Samuel Isaac Miles, Jr. fell at the battle of Green 2 CONT River bridge while riding with General John Hunt Morgan. The site is 2 CONT also called The Battle of Tebb's Bend. It is located on the Morgan- 2 CONT Moore Trail, a road off of Highway 55 betwwen Columbia, Ky. and 2 CONT Campbellsville, Ky. 2 CONT Three markers stand there today. On a hilltop overlooking a valley 2 CONT one sees the Green River meandering through. To assault those heights 2 CONT by frontal attack would have been impossible as the river lies far 2 CONT below in the valley . 2 CONT The fist marker is a monument to the Confederate dead "not 2 CONT forgotten by their countrymen." It looks to be white marble and stands 2 CONT at the apex of the hill. A slender simple pointed monolith. 2 CONT The second marker is a state marker in bronze. " Independence Day- 2 CONT 1863. Morgan's Raiders on way to Ohio approached 200 USA Michigan 2 CONT Infantry under Col. O.H. Moore, intrenched(sic) here. Morgan demanded 2 CONT surrender. Moore replied 4th of July was no day to entertain such a 2 CONT proposition. Eight CSA assaults repulsed in 3 hour battle, 36 CSA 2 CONT killed, 45 wounded. 6 USA killed, 23 wounded. Morgan bypassed and 2 CONT moved on after significant delay." 2 CONT The third marker is a Michigan Historical Site. "Michigan at Tebbs 2 CONT Bend. The 25th Michigan Volunteer Infantry was organized at Kalamazoo 2 CONT and mustered into service in Sept. 1862 under the command of Col. 2 CONT Orlando H. Moore. The companies of the regiments that fought here 2 CONT were Co. D recruited at Three Rivers, Co. E recruited at Calesburg, 2 CONT Co. F recruited at Niles, Co. I recruited at Holland, and Co. K 2 CONT recruited at Buchanan. When ordered by General John H. Morgan to 2 CONT surrender Colonel Moore replied, 'This being the Fourth of July, I 2 CONT cannot entertain the proposition of surrender.' Total casualties for 2 CONT the Twenty-fifth Infantry were six killed and twenty-four wounded. 2 CONT Eighty-one confederate troops fell, including twenty-two commisioned 2 CONT officers." " Erected July 4, 1988 by the Holland- Zeeland, Michigan 2 CONT Civil War Roundtable. 2 CONT It is hard to explain how Kentuckians felt about that war. I lost 2 CONT a relative, albeit distant, at that site. I had relatives on both 2 CONT sides of the conflict. And yet over 120 years later it galled me on 2 CONT that bright summer morning visit that the "Yankees" had again 2 CONT invaded my state and placed a marker ( larger and more verbose as well 2 CONT as significantly more gaudy-it was lime green!) at the site where my 2 CONT distant cousin had died. I am obviously abhorrent of slavery but I 2 CONT still feel that the loss of states rights and the rise of Federal 2 CONT power to it's present monstrous proportions was a blow to all the 2 CONT country. 2 CONT Samuel Isaac Miles, Jr. was buried in the Frankfort Cemetery. He was 2 CONT unmarried. 1 NOTE Lois Myer says born 1841 but Sam Miles LDS files say 1836. 2 CONT " A History of Woodford County",Railey pp. 88-90. 2 CONT I made a personal visit to the site of the "Battle of Tebb's Bend- 2 CONT Green River Bridge". Miles was this author's grandfather. He was a large and 2 CONT physically powerful man. In his younger days he was called "Big Six" 2 CONT referring to his height. On a fishing trip in 1970 he told me stories 2 CONT of his youth. On this same trip we were picked up by the game warden 2 CONT with a stringer full of fish. One was 1/4 of an inch too small. I was 2 CONT given a ticket and told to appear in court. My mother was working for 2 CONT some doctors at the time and one of them knew the judge. He called 2 CONT him and "put in a good word". On the appointed day my grandfather 2 CONT insisted on going to court with me. After the judge entered, "Pop",as 2 CONT he was known to us ,stood up and said "Judge, did you get that call?" 2 CONT I was sure we were going to jail! The judge replied that he had and 2 CONT then proceeded to lecture the game warden on ruining our day of fish- 2 CONT ing when a lot of teens were out doing drugs etc. Pop was fearless 2 CONT and a man without guile. 2 CONT He only had a third grade education because his father abandoned 2 CONT the family when Daniel(Pop) was only 8 y.o. As the oldest child he had 2 CONT to go to work, but he was very intelligent. While in his late sixties 2 CONT he took a correspondence course in constitutional law and passed it. 2 CONT He was the one who introduced me to the Harvard Classics. This man 2 CONT with a third grade education read "Don Quixote","A Tale of Two Cities" 2 CONT , and other great works of Western civilization. 2 CONT He was also educated in the ways of the world. He told me of working 2 CONT as a paperboy in the "Redlight District" of old Louisville- the ladies 2 CONT liked him and would make their customers tip him. The 1910 census in 2 CONT Louisville lists him at age 14 as a "tagger" in a factory. Pop told me 2 CONT that he helped drive cattle from the river boats up Market street for 2 CONT slaughter. He laughingly described being big for his age and having 2 CONT to fight the "drovers" at times. Pop was a member of the railroad 2 CONT union in the days when one would get his legs broken for belonging 2 CONT and he loved FDR for making the railways accept the unions during 2 CONT WWII. 2 CONT My father has told me that as a child that he would often have to 2 CONT go to bars to try and bring my grandfather home. He was a "rounder", 2 CONT as my family put it. He would occasionally come home in a cab and 2 CONT was so bitter about his father that the cabbies would knock on the 2 CONT door and ask if "Danny O'Leary" lived there. Then the family knew 2 CONT that he had been drinking. 2 CONT My father saw this side of him, but my mother loved him. As a 2 CONT Catholic boy and a Methodist girl the priest refused to marry my 2 CONT parents and recommended that my father could find a "good Catholic 2 CONT girl." When they spoke with my grandfather he said" Buddy, if you love 2 CONT this girl marry her or you'll be sorry." In later years when Pop was 2 CONT senile and trying to live at home my mother never complained about 2 CONT cooking, cleaning, or even bathing him. 2 CONT As a child I learned a nonsense poem that Pop taught my dad. 2 CONT " The rooster cackled and the hen looked around and said 'if you 2 CONT you want some of my bowwow you'll have to run me down." Stupid, but it 2 CONT showed a lust for life and a love of laughter. 2 CONT To me he had class. I remember him always in a suit and tie with a 2 CONT hat and a full head of hair as thick and full and as wavy 2 CONT as when he was twenty but snow white and perfectly combed. Quoting 2 CONT poetry or the classics. Writing letters to the editor of the news- 2 CONT papers. He was the reason that I began my research. His stories of 2 CONT Uncle Jeff and Uncle "Nambo" later lead me to Jefferson Davis Miles 2 CONT and to Samuel A. Miles ( how else would a child say Samuel?). He told 2 CONT me that his fathers name was Patty (his baseball nickname and the name 2 CONT under which he died and was buried). Despite a minimal formal 2 CONT education he had "class" and I knew that it was from a source other 2 CONT than his beloved Irish farmer maternal side. My grandfather gave my 2 CONT father and I a sense of pride, a sense of humor, and an understanding 2 CONT that we all have weaknesses and imperfections, but that we all also 2 CONT have an endogenous worth. Regardless of our financial status, we can 2 CONT still appreciate learning and good manners. 2 CONT When Pop was in his seventies my grandmother had died and we took 2 CONT him to Florida with us on a vacation. Right after a storm the waves 2 CONT were crashing into shore. My father and I are big men. Both 6 ft 7 ". 2 CONT Dad was about 260 pounds and strong. I was about 190 pounds and play- 2 CONT ing college basketball. The waves were tossing us around like ragdolls 2 CONT and there stood this 70+ y.o. man in their midst, laughing at us for 2 CONT getting knocked down. He was raised in Shively, a suburb 2 CONT of Louisville where the mostly Irish and German white inhabitants of 2 CONT the West-end of Louisville fled the influx of "Negroes" into that area 2 CONT of Louisville. The fathers were mostly working class veterans of 2 CONT World War II. The neighborhood was a classic subdivision with two or 2 CONT three basic home designs on 50x150 foot lots. He grew up with 20 other 2 CONT kids within 2-3 years of his age with alcohol the only drug 2 CONT of significance and the atom bomb the worst threat to his life, at 2 CONT least until he began to drive. This he learned on 31W, known as the 2 CONT Dixie"Dieway" or more formally the Dixie Highway. 2 CONT In the summer of 1968 he attended the Jefferson Community College 2 CONT on the honors program expecting to skip his senior year of high 2 CONT school and go on to college in the fall. However, Suda E. Butler High 2 CONT School had just gotten a new basketball coach, Lonnie Willoughby, who 2 CONT discovered Rick's plan. After years of languishing on the bench this 2 CONT coach decided that a 6 foot 6 inch 160 pound 17 year old could play 2 CONT basketball. He called on the family and convinced Rick and his parents 2 CONT to give high school another year. And what a year! 2 CONT As a senior Rick was president of the National Honor Society and the 2 CONT Beta Club, manager of the bookstore, captain of the basketball team 2 CONT and voted Most Likely to Succeed. He was voted second team all Sixth 2 CONT Region and was noted as a defensive player. After graduating in 1969 2 CONT he received a one year basketball scholarship to the University of 2 CONT Louisville where he started on the Freshman Cardinal Team. Coach 2 CONT John Dromo later extended the scholarship to all four years. In 1972 2 CONT Coach Denny Crum became the head coach at U. of L. and Rick was part 2 CONT of the beginning of the "Denny Crum Dynasty" in basketball at U of L. 2 CONT During his four years at Louisville, the team went to the N.I.T. in 2 CONT 1971 and 1973 ( during these years only 16 teams went to the NCAA 2 CONT tournament and the N.I.T. was still prestigious). In 1972 the team, 2 CONT under Coach Crum in his first year went to the Final Four in the NCAA 2 CONT losing to UCLA during it's incredible run of NCAA domination under 2 CONT Coach John Wooden. Rick's regret was that he was not on the travelling 2 CONT team in 1972 so he missed the trip, but he always felt a part of that 2 CONT team. During his four years at Louisville, he played with, and daily 2 CONT practiced against, such players as Mike Grosso, Jim Price, Henry Bacon 2 CONT , Phillip Bond, Ullyses"Junior" Bridgeman, Allen Murphy, and Ron Thomas 2 CONT , all of whom played either ABA or NBA Basketball. Though not a great 2 CONT talent himself he learned that hard work could often overcome 2 CONT intrinsic deficits. 2 CONT Rick was more talented as a musician than as a basketball player and 2 CONT he and his brother Dan Miles formed a band called "The Blue Notes" in 2 CONT 1963. At the age of 10 he began playing the trumpet and by the age of 2 CONT 13 was playing professionally around the city of Louisville. Often,he 2 CONT had to rush from a ballgame to a band job as the group stayed booked 2 CONT every Saturday and most Friday nights. The band played "dance music" 2 CONT from jazz to country including some Rock and Roll but "blues" was 2 CONT the group's forte. Once, in 1966 the band entered a" Battle of the 2 CONT Bands" sponsored by WHAS, a television station in Louisville. 2 CONT The producer, Chuck Hall, told the band that the competition was all 2 CONT amateur Rock and Roll groups. He suggested that the "Blue Notes" 2 CONT withdraw from the competition and instead gave the band 12 spots on 2 CONT the local Hi Varieties television show. The band played together until 2 CONT 1973 when it disbanded due to it's members getting "real" jobs or 2 CONT going to school. 2 CONT At the age of 14 Rick joined his brother Dan in a show called the 2 CONT "Union Barrack-ades". This was a UAW sponsored USO-type show that 2 CONT entertained soldiers and did benefit shows. There was no financial 2 CONT reimbursement but Ernie and Ada "Shorty" Grawmeyer opened up a new 2 CONT world to the boys from Shively. Dan was old enough (16 y.o.) to travel 2 CONT overseas and went to Santo Domingo, Japan and the Phillipines with 2 CONT the show. Rick was content to travel by plane and bus all over the 2 CONT U.S. Third Army- Fort Bragg N.C.,Fort Benning Ga.,Fort Rucker Ala., 2 CONT Fort Campbell Ky.,Stewart Air base,Ga.Fort MaClellen,Fort McPherson, 2 CONT and many others, as well as V.A. Hospitals, nursing homes and 2 CONT Institutions for the "Mentally Retarded" as they were known at that 2 CONT time. The dancers and musicians travelled under army orders in the 2 CONT summers putting on two or three shows a day and travelling by bus 2 CONT and plane all over the south. Literally thousands of soldiers were 2 CONT entertained in service clubs, parking lots, tents, and hospital wards. 2 CONT This was during the build-up and entire run of the Viet Nam War, when 2 CONT patriotism was not an "in" thing. The teenagers and adults who 2 CONT participated in the troupe gave their weekends and summers in order 2 CONT to help the soldiers, many who later gave it all in a war that most 2 CONT of society would rather have forgotten. But, in giving the givers also 2 CONT received. The cheers of 2000 trainees who hadn't seen a girl for six 2 CONT weeks, the hug of a Down's Syndrome child in a state institution, 2 CONT or the smile of an elderly person in a nursing home who hadn't seen 2 CONT a teenager for months were rewards that taught Rick the real meaning 2 CONT of "It is better to give than to receive." 2 CONT The Union Barrack-ades was like a large extended family. And it was 2 CONT in reality to become Rick's family. His brother Dan married Carolyn 2 CONT Roberts,a dancer whose father, mother, brother and three sisters,as 2 CONT well as cousins were members of the troupe. Rick first met his future 2 CONT wife Terry Sallee when she was an 11 year old pantomimist with the 2 CONT show. As she grew and was joined by her two younger sisters Rick at 2 CONT first became friends with his future father-in-law Charles "Corky" 2 CONT Sallee and his wife Irma. Later, Rick took notice of Terry and they 2 CONT dated on and off for several years. The 4 year difference became less 2 CONT noticable as they grew older and in 1976 Rick and Terry were wed 2 CONT at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary by Mike Gatton a Christian 2 CONT minister and Terry's cousin. The wedding was attended by over 400 2 CONT of their closest friends and relatives, including family, college 2 CONT basketball (his) and cheerleading (hers) friends. U.B.'s( as the 2 CONT members of the show were known), and medical school classmates. 2 CONT At the age of 10 Rick underwent an appendectomy and began a lifelong 2 CONT interest in medicine. He graduated from the University of Louisville 2 CONT with a B.A. in Chemistry in 1973 and that fall entered the University 2 CONT of Louisville's School of Medicine. In 1977 he entered the U of L 2 CONT affiliated Family Practice Residency associated with St. Anthony's 2 CONT Hospital. He was the Chief Resident 1979-1980 and became Board 2 CONT Certified in 1980. Rick entered a medical practice as a solo family 2 CONT practitioner in Russell Springs,Ky. August 4, 1980. He was the first 2 CONT new doctor in the community in over 20 years. As a result of combined 2 CONT community effort and the efforts of Dr. Larry Loehle and Dr. Barrett 2 CONT Bernard ( who had attended UofL with Rick), Rick helped open and put 2 CONT the first patient in the Russell County Hospital in 1981. The three 2 CONT young doctors also joined with Dr. Charles Peck and pharmacist Leon 2 CONT Grider to design and build the Lake Cumberland Medical Arts Building 2 CONT in Russell Springs thus bringing medical care into the 80's in Russell 2 CONT County. 2 CONT In 1981 at the request of the Kentucky Medical Association, at the 2 CONT age of 30 Doctor Miles became a member of the Kentucky Peer Review 2 CONT Organization's Board of Directors. KPRO was assigned the task of 2 CONT implementing many of the changes in medical care that were taking 2 CONT place at that time, such as preauthorization of hospital stays and 2 CONT quality assurance of physicians. The five years on that board saw 2 CONT some of the greatest changes in the delivery of medical care and a 2 CONT great loss of independence in practice for physicians. The board tried 2 CONT to serve as a buffer between the changes in federal law and the 2 CONT practicing physician while fairly policing quality of care issues in 2 CONT the state of Kentucky. It was a gruelling experience. As stated in an 2 CONT article published in "Medical Economics" in December 1984 by Doctor 2 CONT Miles, preauthorization saved almost 38 million dollars for the state 2 CONT of Kentucky with review by physician's policing themselves. In 1986 2 CONT KPRO lost it's contract because it was not vindictive enough. Doctor 2 CONT Miles was then part of the Quality Assurance Committee for it's 2 CONT successor, but when the tone turned to strictly percentages of 2 CONT reduction rather than true quality review he resigned from the 2 CONT committee. 2 CONT In 1992 Rick was elected Secretary of the Kentucky Academy of 2 CONT Family Physicians. He has served this organization as a District 2 CONT Director and on the Long Range Planning Committee. 2 CONT In 1993 Doctor Miles was appointed as chairman of the Kentucky 2 CONT Medicaid Drug Formulary Advisory Board, which advised the commisioner 2 CONT of the Department of Human Resources as to which drugs should be on 2 CONT the state formulary. He was charged with implementing the OBRA 1990 2 CONT laws. He served on this Board until January 1995 at which time he 2 CONT resigned in protest over the state provider tax and reduction of 2 CONT Medicaid benefits which he felt would reduce accessibility of patients 2 CONT to doctors and prevent the ability to recruit doctors to rural 2 CONT Kentucky. 2 CONT At the time of this biography Doctor Miles is practicing in 2 CONT Russell Springs, Ky. Despite a very active practice he is on the 2 CONT Steering Committee for the Russell County Habitat for Humanity, 2 CONT he is president of the Russell County Medical Society, and Vice- 2 CONT President of the Russell County Hospital Medical Staff. He attends 2 CONT the Russell Springs United Methodist church and has sung at many 2 CONT community functions. He also has coached junior league basketball 2 CONT for the last four years. 0 @I99@ INDI 1 NAME Beulah Fay/Stayton/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 MAR 1925 1 FATH @I174@ 1 MOTH @I176@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I100@ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F27@ 1 FAMC @F49@ 0 @I100@ INDI 1 NAME John Velton/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 MAR 1925 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I88@ 1 MOTH @I87@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I99@ 2 DATE 24 MAY 1947 2 PLAC Louisville,Ky. 1 MISC LABEL2: Switchman,SCB,Telephone Co. 1 MISC LABEL3: Catholic 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 FAMS @F27@ 1 NOTE BIO:John Velton Miles was born March 20,1925 in Louisville, Ky. to Daniel 2 CONT L. John 2 CONT attended St. Benedict's Catholic School in the Westend of Louisville. 2 CONT I was told at my Uncle's funeral that once my father's (John Miles) 2 CONT eighth grade basketball team was one of the best in it's day and that 2 CONT they beat St. Josephs prep school of Bardstown - this was a prepschool 2 CONT team. At the age of 17 John "left" St. Xavier high school following 2 CONT an incident in which a priest was hitting him on the head and he 2 CONT struck back. He then entered the U.S. Army and served in World War II. 2 CONT John Miles served in the 171st Combat Engineer Battalion,Company B. 2 CONT B.M. Davis 2nd Lt. was his commanding officer. He received his 2 CONT training at Camp Carson,Colorado. 2 CONT In Europe on D-Day he jumped behind enemy lines with the 82nd 2 CONT Airborne, according to his story to me. The 171st was part of Texas 2 CONT Bill Simpson's "Fighting Ninth"- the youngest army in the field. They 2 CONT fought at the seige of Best then to Luxembourg and held the Arannes 2 CONT Forest. The Ninth served in the Holland Aacher sector then on 2 CONT November 16 to the Rohr River to protect the 1st Army flank. "It met 2 CONT some of the toughest fighting on the Western Front". On February 23 2 CONT the Ninth Army built up for the main drive toward the Rhine. In March 2 CONT in 48 hours troops surged through the Rohr and established a deep 2 CONT bridgehead. The Ninth linked up with the 1st Army at Pederbonn and 2 CONT reached the Elbe River 69 miles from Berlin "only to be halted by 2 CONT Gen. Eisenhower's order." John Miles crossed the Elbe River at the 2 CONT Rammagan Bridge. 2 CONT His decorations included Allied colors,Victory ribbon,Eto Albbon 2 CONT with three battle stars, Core 2 Paris Patch,11th Corp 9th Army patch 2 CONT and Rifle Expert Patch. He claimed that of 1000 men in his unit only 2 CONT 32 of the origional men survived. 2 CONT After the war John worked at American Express making deliveries. 2 CONT He was then hired by South Central Bell Telephone Company where he 2 CONT worked as a "Switchman", repairing equipment both inside and out. 2 CONT As part of his training he took electrical, math and physics classes 2 CONT that were daunting but despite an 11th grade education he did well. 2 CONT John was a large man at 6 foot 7 inches and weighing from 235 2 CONT to 325 lbs. during his adult life. He suffered from Narcolepsy and 2 CONT later on Diabetes. This resulted in a medical retirement at age 55. 2 CONT He had had a heart attack at age 43 and a stroke at age 69. But, as a 2 CONT boy I remember my father lifting 110 lb weights over his head with one 2 CONT hand. Once in a snow storm we ran off the road up onto a curb. He got 2 CONT out and picked up the back end of a '57 Chevy and scooted it back onto 2 CONT the road. Dad loved to laugh and people loved to be around him. He was 2 CONT an excellent singer (Welsh?) but had an occasional horrific burst of 2 CONT "Irish temper." His greatest attribute was not that he was a worldly 2 CONT success, but that his love of people and of family made him a "rich" 2 CONT man. This standard , he emphasized and passed on to his children. 1 NOTE The combat history was from an article in "The Stars And Stripes" , 2 CONT the official military paper, from 1945 that is among John's personal 2 CONT papers. Also a brief article from the Louisville Courier Journal 2 CONT Sunday Roto Section .As well as my personal memories of my father, who 2 CONT is still alive at the time of this writing. 2 CONT John was raised Catholic but was excommunicated for marrying my 2 CONT mother in the Methodist Church. This was in the days before Vatican II 2 CONT .He nevertheless felt that mass should still be in Latin and would 2 CONT not attend our church except on very special occasions. 0 @I101@ INDI 1 NAME Terry Ann/Sallee/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 NOV 1954 2 PLAC Louisville ,Ky. 1 FATH @I112@ 1 MOTH @I111@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I98@ 2 DATE 5 JUN 1976 2 PLAC Louisville,Ky. 1 MISC LABEL2: Medical Technologist 1 MISC LABEL3: Church of Christ\Methodist 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F26@ 1 FAMC @F30@ 0 @I102@ INDI 1 NAME Casey Leigh/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 JAN 1979 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I98@ 1 MOTH @I101@ 1 MISC LABEL3: Methodist 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F26@ 0 @I103@ INDI 1 NAME Nicholas Stayton/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 DEC 1981 2 PLAC Louisville,Ky. 1 FATH @I98@ 1 MOTH @I101@ 1 MISC LABEL3: Methodist 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F26@ 0 @I104@ INDI 1 NAME Sean Patrick/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 25 JUL 1985 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I98@ 1 MOTH @I101@ 1 MISC LABEL3: Methodist 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F26@ 0 @I105@ INDI 1 NAME John Daniel/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 11 JUN 1949 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I100@ 1 MOTH @I99@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I184@ 2 DATE 11 AUG 1968 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky, 1 MISC LABEL2: G.E. answer center management 1 MISC LABEL3: Meth. coverted to Catholicism 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F27@ 1 FAMS @F28@ 0 @I106@ INDI 1 NAME Marilyn Faye/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 8 MAR 1954 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I100@ 1 MOTH @I99@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I187@ 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 MISC LABEL2: Teacher's Aid 1 MISC LABEL3: Meth. converted to Catholic 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F27@ 1 FAMS @F52@ 0 @I107@ INDI 1 NAME Susan Marie/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 MAR 1958 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I100@ 1 MOTH @I99@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I192@ 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I193@ 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 MISC LABEL2: Medical Secretary 1 MISC LABEL3: Meth. converted to Catholic 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F27@ 1 FAMS @F53@ 1 FAMS @F54@ 0 @I108@ INDI 1 NAME Dorothy Rose/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 FEB 1918 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I88@ 1 MOTH @I87@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I293@ 2 DATE 1 SEP 1937 2 PLAC St. Benedict's,Lou.Ky. 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 FAMS @F77@ 0 @I109@ INDI 1 NAME Linda Lee/Miles/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 28 NOV 1922 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 FATH @I88@ 1 MOTH @I87@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I296@ 1 MISC LABEL3: Catholic 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 FAMS @F79@ 0 @I110@ INDI 1 NAME Daniel Lawrence/Miles/ 1 TITL Jr. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 NOV 1928 2 PLAC Louisville, Ky. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 JUL 1994 2 PLAC Louisvile, Ky. 1 FATH @I88@ 1 MOTH @I87@ 1 MARR 2 SPOU @I297@ 1 MISC LABEL1: Pancreatic cancer 1 MISC LABEL2: Salesman\Sears 1 MISC LABEL3: Catholic 1 MISC LABEL4: Calvary Cem. My mother's parents are buried in the Haysville Cemetery 2 CONT , as well as many other relatives.I also remember them talking about 2 CONT the Baptist church near Haysville. My grandfather Hays was a Baptist, 2 CONT and attended a church near Logan. He had a brother Thomas Hays who 2 CONT lived near Haysville. Also a sister Nannie Powers and Bessie Reynolds 2 CONT who lived near Perryville. Grandpa Hays daddy was Nelson Hays. No 2 CONT doubt this is the family from which the Hays community got it's name. 2 CONT Mother has a sister Clella Hays who still lives in Lebanon. Aunt Clell 2 CONT has a son Maurice T. Hays who lives near Lebanon and a daughter who 2 CONT lives in the old homestead of her grandfather Harmon Hays, on the 2 CONT Short-Line Pike, or thereabout in Marion County. She is Christine Hays 2 CONT Lawson.Another sister, Evalyn Mann resides in Campbellsville,Ky. Other 2 CONT sisters and brothers are deceased, they are Pearl Lawson, Seba White- 2 CONT house,Emmett Hays, Edgar Hays, and Isaac Hays. All three brothers were 2 CONT also railroaders from brakemen to conductors; however, the three moved 2 CONT to Bloomington and Lafayette, Indiana many years ago.We still have the 2 CONT Hays family reunion on the 4th of July in Marion County. 2 CONT My grandfather Hays (Harrison) was a rural mail carrier for a short 2 CONT time, but having a large farm of tobacco and corn, as well as 2 CONT livestock and a fruit orchard and grape arbors, his duties were needed 2 CONT more at home and attending to his tenants and family. Grandma Bettie 2 CONT died young at age 36. 2 CONT I have so many fond memories of visiting my Grandpa Hays, he had a 2 CONT large shaded front yard and big front porch. A gate and fence led to a 2 CONT large barnyard. his barn had many stalls for their beautiful horses 2 CONT and also places for their buggies and carriages, and the harness 2 CONT equipment. 2 CONT Christmas time was always a happy time there, when I was a young 2 CONT girl, two of my mother's sisters were still at home, Aunt Seba and 2 CONT Aunt Evalyn, they had a beautiful Victrola and records. It was always 2 CONT fun to be entertained by them doing the Charleston. Also as other 2 CONT cousins, aunts and uncles would come home for the holidays, you 2 CONT really had the feeling of "Home and Hearth." With the glowing fire- 2 CONT place we would gather around for treats that came mostly at 2 CONT Christmas time. There was always a bounty of chocolate drops, orange 2 CONT slices, ribbon candy, peppermint stick candy and the choice of fruit, 2 CONT apples, oranges, and bananas. I can also so vividly remember the 2 CONT checkers and domino games. We used Coca-Cola wooden crates to set our 2 CONT games up, but no card games." 1 NOTE From a letter to the editor February 5, 1992 Lebanon Enterprise RE: 2 CONT A Montage: A Trip to Gravel Switch:"Child of the Railroad", from 2 CONT "Lebanon Enterprise", Volume 4- Winter 1992.
