(The exact town has 2 CONT not been verified yet; however, according to the obituary notices of 2 CONT Josiah Sanborn and his daughter, Emeline, the town appears to have been 2 CONT DeKalb, same as the county.) They traveled by covered wagon, driving some 2 CONT livestock. In the mornings, milk was placed in a churn; by evening, the 2 CONT milk had been churned to butter which they would use for their supper. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Sanborns did not stay long in Illinois, but continued on westward in 2 CONT the covered wagon and settled northwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedar 2 CONT Rapids was not much of a town when they arrived on August 31, 1856; a few 2 CONT houses, a mill, and a store. The Indians from Tama reservation came every 2 CONT year and camped close by the Sanborn farm which was located along the 2 CONT Cedar River. The Indians were always peaceable and were good friends with 2 CONT Josiah Sanborn and his family. 2 CONT 2 CONT There was one elderly squaw who had been captured by the Musquakies in the 2 CONT Black Hawk War that had her wickiup near the Sanborn home. Mussak Quttack 2 CONT - Pleasant Summer - by name, and would often come to Adelaide Sanborn and 2 CONT say "Me clean, me take baby?" She was referring to their youngest child, 2 CONT Jessie May Sanborn. (For additional see notes, Jessie May Sanborn.) (The 2 CONT Musquakies were the Fox Indians who lived in Wisconsin. Their neighbors 2 CONT were the Sauks of which the Black Hawk was a member. Black Hawk, hoping to 2 CONT regain his ancestral grounds in Illinois, led several hundred warriors 2 CONT into a few skirmishes which resulted in a wholesale slaughter of his 2 CONT people by the U.S. soldiers in the spring of 1832. These skirmishes which 2 CONT only lasted about 3 months were called the Black Hawk war.) 2 CONT 2 CONT Josiah Sanborn enlisted 12 August 1862 for 3 years in the Civil War as a 2 CONT Union soldier. He was in Company A, 31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. 2 CONT According to one source, "he participated in all the engagements of his 2 CONT regiment and was with General Sherman's army all through the Atlanta 2 CONT campaign. He was in about twenty engagements, and although never wounded, 2 CONT partically lost his hearing while in the service." However, part of this 2 CONT information has been refuted by his daughter and by his war record. His 2 CONT daughter said served on Lookout Mountain and with Grant's army at the 2 CONT seige of Vicksburg, but was never with Sherman. According to his millitary 2 CONT records, he was absent from his regiment from 14 July 1864 until he was 2 CONT mustered out 27 July 1865 because of an illness contracted in Georgia. So 2 CONT he could not have possibly "participated in all the engagements of his 2 CONT regiment." 2 CONT 2 CONT Josiah Sanborn kept a daily log of his war experiences which resulted in 2 CONT the filling of several diaries which were sent home to his family as they 2 CONT were completed. These diaries were handed down to his daughter Jesse 2 CONT Coffey (Sanborn) and then to Jesse's daughter Mary Wagner. 2 CONT 2 CONT After his discharge and return to Iowa, Josiah became an active and 2 CONT honored member of Dennison Post #244, GAR of Center Point. For several 2 CONT years Josiah was active in the carpenter trade. However in 1878 he 2 CONT abandoned that trade and moved his family to an 80-acre prairie farm 2 CONT northeast of Center Point, Iowa, located in the Grant Township on Section 2 CONT 36, where they farmed for 28 years. The Indians from the Tama Reservation 2 CONT would also stop there as they traveled from the Cedar River to Wapsie 2 CONT River. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the book "Portrait and Biographical Album of Linn County, Iowa", the 2 CONT following was said about Josiah Sanborn: 2 CONT 2 CONT "In early life, Josiah Sanborn learned the carpenter's trade, at which he 2 CONT became very skillful and at which he followed for about 15 years. He is 2 CONT enterprising and energetic, and has succeeded thoroughly in his farming 2 CONT operations. He has a fine homestead and is surrounded by the comforts of 2 CONT life. He is a Republican in politics, and is connected with the Methodist 2 CONT Episcopal Church of which Mrs. Sanborn is also a member in good standing. 2 CONT Mr.Sanborn is the assistant and encourager of very good work and purpose 2 CONT tending to the welfare of his community and is held in high esteem by his 2 CONT townsmen." 2 CONT 2 CONT According to his obituary notice,"...in his later years, he was largely 2 CONT shut into himself, he being very deaf, but his condition led to reading 2 CONT and meditation. He sought to keep himself in touch with the world's 2 CONT progress and to his friends he seemed like a wise prophet of old. In 1906 2 CONT Josiah and Adelaide Sanborn sold their farm, buying 11 acres near their 2 CONT youngest daughter, Jessie Coffey, near Marion, Iowa. Josiah Sanborn built 2 CONT his own house on that land and they remained there until his death. They 2 CONT celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May 1911. 2 CONT 2 CONT Josiah Sanborn died 20 October 1917, age 91 years, 5 months, 2 days. 2 CONT Adelaide Sanborn lived with her daughter for her remaining years, passing 2 CONT away 14 April 1924, age 89 years, 1 month, 26 days. Both funeral services 2 CONT were held at Prairie Chapel, Marion, Iowa. They are buried side by side 2 CONT in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT CHILDREN: 2 CONT * i. She died 21 2 CONT January 1875 at LaClaire, Illinois, aged 63 years. 2 CONT 2 CONT Dryer Eaton was a shoemaker and tanner of hides. He told his 2 CONT granddaughter, Jessie Coffey, it took three years to make good sole 2 CONT leather. In Ohio the Eaton family resided beside a stream of water, 2 CONT possibly the Rocky River, because Dyer Eaton had to have water for his 2 CONT vats in which the hides soaked. According to 2 CONT accounts and tradition, he worked his passage over as an indentured 2 CONT apprentice to a joiner, housewrite, or master builder. The exact date has 2 CONT not been ascertained. His name has not been found on any of the custom 2 CONT house lists of passengers of London or other ports, nor on the Boston 2 CONT court lists. Names could easily have not been on these lists for many 2 CONT came secretly, not desiring to take the required oaths of allegiance to 2 CONT the government and supremancy of the church or pay the subsidy. Also many 2 CONT persons smuggled themselves aboard ship rather than procuring a permit to 2 CONT emigrate by taking these required oaths. In the year 1635 several joiners 2 CONT emigrated to Massachusetts, being servants whose names were not given. 2 CONT 2 CONT Moses Cleveland was probably born about 1624 at Ipswich as the court 2 CONT records of Woburn, Massachusetts, filed in 1663 stated he was 39 years old 2 CONT then. He died at Woburn 9 January 1701-02. His residency between 1635 2 CONT when he supposedly landed in Massachusetts and 1641 when the first records 2 CONT were found with his name in Woburn had not definitely been determined. 2 CONT But he did settle in Woburn in 1641 and, according to Woburn town records, 2 CONT he was made a freeman in 1643. 2 CONT 2 CONT He married Ann Winn 26 September 1658 at Woburn. No record of her death has been found, but probaably 2 CONT died in Woburn prior to 6 May 1682, the date her father made his will, 2 CONT mentioning three of their childredn but not herself. 2 CONT 2 CONT Moses Cleveland became a man of prominence in New England and, it appears, 2 CONT was quite actively engaged in the political movements of the day. 2 CONT 2 CONT CLEVELAND ANCESTRY: The original seat of the Family of Cleveland (or 2 CONT Cleaveland) has been traced to the district of Cleveland in the North 2 CONT Riding of Yorkshire, England, from whence the family name derived. It 2 CONT appears, THORKIL, believed to be a saxon landowner, founded the Cleveland 2 CONT family about the time of the Norman Conquest, 1066, when he assumed the 2 CONT surname of DE CLIVELAND. 2 CONT 2 CONT The exact English lineage of the Cleveland emigrants to America has not, 2 CONT as yet been definitely settled.
