She was wearing a maroon dress, black shoes, cotton 2 CONT stockings, and a colorful smock with a small white flower in the lapel. 2 CONT She has gray hair, and, behind the glasses she was wearing, I could see 2 CONT two smiling brown eyes. Describing herself, Mrs. Farmer said, "I have 2 CONT ten fingers, ten toes, and two good hands to smack children with." 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer was born September 30, 1864, about three miles from Como. At 2 CONT the age of three years, she, with her family, moved to the Stratton Home 2 CONT a few miles west of Como, where she lived until she was married in the 2 CONT Stratton Home in 1884. 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer attended the local school which was located where Hill Top 2 CONT Service Station now stands and a private school where the Swango home is 2 CONT located. She was educated in Collierville, Tennessee. "It seems as if I 2 CONT just can't recall any of my teachers' names," she said. "It looks as if 2 CONT I could remember the name of that old maid teacher." She could only 2 CONT remember Dr. herd, who was president of the Collierville School. 1 NOTE In the school she attended, there were about two hundred scholars but 2 CONT were not paired off into separate rooms. 1 NOTE When I asked her about athletic activities, she very quickly exclaimed, 2 CONT "Why, when we went to school, we just learned our lessons and went home!" 2 CONT She took part in many school parties, storm parties, and just plain 2 CONT get-together parties. 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer succeeded in the English course, but failed to accomplish 2 CONT anything in the other language that she attempted. There were about 2 CONT fifteen people in her graduating class. Flowers were brought and placed 2 CONT before the graduates by friends and relatives. 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer was a member of a rather large family - six boys and two 2 CONT girls; but only three of the children lived to be grown. 1 NOTE When Mrs. Farmer was sixteen years of age, she was attending church 2 CONT services in Senatobia, Mississippi, when a young man entered and caught 2 CONT glimpse of her. After the church services were over, the young man asked 2 CONT the minister if he would introduce them. "This introduction was the 2 CONT beginning of a logn romance, which lasted for four years, while the young 2 CONT man finished a ministers' course in a school at Louisville, Kentucky," 2 CONT she laughted; "but that romance finally ended for we were married in 2 CONT 1884." 1 NOTE In reply to my questions, she said, "I had eight children of my own - 2 CONT five boys and three girls; but two sons and one daughter are dead.: "I 2 CONT have five children living," she said proudly - one doctor, one professor, 2 CONT one insurance salesman, one teacher, and one housewife. They're all 2 CONT doing fine and I'm proud of them all." 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer thinks the younger generation is friendlier. "The ways of 2 CONT traveling are so different. When I was young, we never heard of a wreck, 2 CONT but now and then, the horse would get excited and run away with the 2 CONT buggy. My father always provided dtame horses for me, though," she 2 CONT explained. 1 NOTE At an Ole Miss football game last season, Mrs. Farmer watched the very 2 CONT disgusting actions of the young drunkards instead of the game, until the 2 CONT boys were picked up and taken away. "I didn't know them," she said, 2 CONT "but I felt bad just to think that they were some mother's sons." 1 NOTE Mrs. Farmer's hobbies are housekeeping, handwork, cooking, and preserving 2 CONT food. Her favorite books are religious books since she is older and 2 CONT doesn't read as much, but she used to like novels. She is fond of all 2 CONT religious songs but one of her favorites is "The Holy City." "The reason 2 CONT I am fond of that son," she explained, "is because my daughter used to 2 CONT sing it as a solo in church." When she was young, Mrs. Farmer was fond 2 CONT of dancing. Her father would take her to the dances and wait until they 2 CONT were over to taker her home. 1 NOTE After I had thanked Mrs. Farmer for the interview adn I had arisen to 2 CONT leave, she exclaimed, "Give my love to all," which I know will be 2 CONT regarded and returned by all who know her. 1 NOTE 0 @I0062@ INDI 1 NAME John Frazier /Farmer/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 12 Oct 1819 2 PLAC North Carolina 1 DEAT 2 DATE 31 May 1905 2 PLAC Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi 1 FAMS @F0023@ 1 FAMC @F0030@ 1 NOTE John Farmer is buried in Bethesda Cemetery, Senatobia, Mississippi. While a 2 CONT young may he went to Savannah, Ga. When the Mexican was broke out he 2 CONT joined the army. After the war he returned to Massachusetts and was with 2 CONT his father at the time of his death. Later he married and settled at 2 CONT como, Miss., where he died. 1 NOTE Anonymous paper authored prior to 1890: 1 NOTE J.K. Stratton, a native of Massachusetts, and an excellent shoe-maker, 2 CONT emigrated to this state where he pegged out several hundred dollars in 2 CONT manufacture of Russet shoes at the rate of ten pair per day. During the 2 CONT flush times of the spurious banking institutions of the State, he had the 2 CONT misfortune to have the proceeds of his hard earnings invested in Union & 2 CONT Planters Bank paper which depreciated until it was worthless; and so far 2 CONT as real value was concerned, he would have been as weel if his 2 CONT pocket-book had been stuffed full of didrty rags; but being young and 2 CONT vigorous, he was possessed of an indomitable energy to combat adversity. 2 CONT He imigrated to Westville where he prepared soles for many naked feet, 2 CONT and in the meantime procured a lot of law books, and during his leisure 2 CONT hours studied that profession and became a successful practitioner. He 2 CONT ran for District Attorney in this District but was defeated by O.F. 2 CONT McCarty. In 1847 he volunteered in the Mexican war, and acting as a sort 2 CONT of subsutler he accumulated some money which added to his monthly pay, 2 CONT amounting to seven or eight hundred dollars. Soon after he was paid off 2 CONT and discharged at Vicksburg. Someone stole all his money, and he was 2 CONT again left in a penniless condition; but he had some friends with him who 2 CONT furnished means to pay his expenses to this place where he again pursued 2 CONT his former occupation and accumulated some money. 1 NOTE When the gold fever of California raged at its highest in april 1849, the 2 CONT fascinating allurements, made more enticing by the fabulous reports of a 2 CONT gilded land where the precious metal was more abundant than that where 2 CONT Solomon obtained this supply with which to adorn his temple, produced in 2 CONT Stratton a longing desire to explore the gilded hills and vales adn 2 CONT endure the hardships of a wilderness miner's life; but his financial 2 CONT condition was not such as to enable him to defray his expenses in a long 2 CONT and dangerous voyage around Cape Horn. But with indomitable will, with 2 CONT energy and ingenuity for every emergency, he determined to visit the 2 CONT fabled land and peradventure, better his financial conditin. This was a 2 CONT time when most of the cotton in this section was shipped down the Pearl 2 CONT River in flat boats. He therefore engaged himself as a hand to assist in 2 CONT steering a flat boat from Jaynes Bluff on the Pearl River below Rockport; 2 CONT and soon after, he made a skiff at the old mill near Westville, which 2 CONT F.M. Young, decd., hauled to the Banks bridge on Strong River, four miles 2 CONT from town, where with his knapsack and clothes, bidding adieu to friends, 2 CONT comfort and civilization, he embarked, all alone, for California. We ca 2 CONT but imagine that while his frail bark was gliding down the strem keeping 2 CONT pace with the current eh oft reviewed teh past and conjectured of the 2 CONT future. 1 NOTE Before he reached the mouth of the Strong River, a large raft of floating 2 CONT debris obstructed his descent, and being unabel to get his boat below the 2 CONT raft he was compelled tdo abandon it, adn took his bundle of clothes and 2 CONT walked down to the landing where the flat boat was in waiting. He served 2 CONT as one of the hands on this boat to the mouth of the Pearl River, and 2 CONT from there on a Schooner to New Orleans. On the trip from Jaynes Bluff 2 CONT to New Orleans he was accompanied by Jesse Ownes, a brotehr of G.W. 2 CONT Ownes, and they in company with another man embarked for the mouth of the 2 CONT Rio Grande. Stratton having been in the Mexican War, had learned to talk 2 CONT with Nexicans so as to make himself understood and notwithstanding only 2 CONT three years had elapsed since the cessation of hostilities between the 2 CONT United States and Mexico, with a full knowledge of the treachery of some 2 CONT of the Mexicans who might still be harboring an animosity towards the 2 CONT inhabitants of the States, these three brave souls started out for the 2 CONT purpose of traveling through Mexico to California on foot. After they 2 CONT had travelled a few days in this way, Owens was taken sick, the other 2 CONT remained with him a few days until they were satisfied he would not be 2 CONT able to travel for some time. 1 NOTE They succeeded in getting him into confortable quarters where he would be 2 CONT as well cared for as the suroundings would admit; and after they had done 2 CONT so, they pursued their journey, often camping out at night admidst 2 CONT thehowling of wolves and other wild animals, with no covering except the 2 CONT overhanging canopy of Heaven, occasionally meeting a Mexican or two whose 2 CONT treachery they suspected, but they eventually reached the mining district 2 CONT wearied, tired and foot sore. 1 NOTE There was then no houses, shelters, or accomodations of any sort in the 2 CONT vicinity of the hills and valleys where the gold was being found; and it 2 CONT was almost impossible to procure anything to subsist upon; although there 2 CONT was no conveniences or comforts to be had, Stratton redoubled his 2 CONT energies and went earnestly to digging and scratching for gold, and 2 CONT continued to do so until he had accumulated about $6,000. 1 NOTE He then concluded there was more to be made in supplying the mines with 2 CONT food adn other necessaries, and as there were no goods, he bought some 2 CONT pack mules and made regular trips to the city and packed out necessary 2 CONT articles which were readily sold at almost any price. He pursued his 2 CONT course and accumulated nearly $100,000 when he and a company of theirs 2 CONT formed a partnership to turn a river where gold was more plentiful in the 2 CONT bed of the river. About the time they succeeded in getting it turned, 2 CONT the wet season set in and washed the dam away and he lost about $60,000 2 CONT by that investment. 1 NOTE He returned to Westville in January 1852 with some twenty-five or thirty 2 CONT thousand dollars, went back to Massachusetts and paid off a seven or 2 CONT eight thousand mortgage resting on his father's home and returned and 2 CONT settled in Panola County where he was living las year. 0 @I0103@ INDI 1 NAME Eudora (Dora) Elizabeth /Paslay/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 Jan 1843 2 PLAC Laurens County, South Carolina 1 DEAT 2 DATE 19 May 1895 2 PLAC Como, Mississippi 1 FAMS @F0037@ 1 FAMC @F0069@ 0 @I0104@ INDI 1 NAME Jesse Kendall /Stratton/, Jr. 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 22 Feb 1874 2 PLAC Como, Mississippi 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1955 2 PLAC Como, Mississippi 1 FAMS @F0038@ 1 FAMC @F0037@ 0 @I0105@ INDI 1 NAME Stella /Robertson/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1876 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1931 1 FAMS @F0038@ 0 @I0106@ INDI 1 NAME David /Stratton/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 Jun 1786 2 PLAC Athol, Massachusetts 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1 Jul 1853 2 PLAC Grafton, Massachusetts 1 FAMS @F0054@ 1 FAMS @F0039@ 1 FAMC @F0040@ 1 NOTE Information from A Book of Strattons, Vol. II, p. 198: 1 NOTE David Stratton was born June 20, 1786, in Athol. He married Deborah 2 CONT Rand, daughter of William and Persis (Pierce) Rand. The Rands were one 2 CONT of the good old families of Charlestown. Thomas Rand, the father of 2 CONT William, was a son of Robert and Alice Rand who came to Charlestown about 2 CONT 1636. Thomas married Sarah, daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth (Whitman) 2 CONT Edenden of Scituate and Boston. Persis was the daughter of Samuel and 2 CONT Mary Peirce and grandaughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Peirce, who came to 2 CONT Charlestown about 1634. She was born January 30, 1668-9, and died June 2 CONT 25, 1748. She married, first John Shepherd in 1690, who died the 2 CONT following year; and married, second, William Rand, who was born September 2 CONT 11, 1674, and died February 9, 1747. Their daughter Deborah married 2 CONT Janes Stratton, October 12, 1721, in Watertown. 1 NOTE For five or six years after their marriage James and Deborah lived in 2 CONT Charlestown and Boston, and then removed to Stonington, Conn., where they 2 CONT united with the church and where they lived for about seven years. Three 2 CONT of their children were born there. In the spring of 1736 they left 2 CONT Stonington, and, returning to Massachusetts, settled at Athol (then 2 CONT called "Pequoid" or Payquage Plantation), where land was granted him and 2 CONT he became one of the proprietors of the town, and where some of his 2 CONT descendants live to this day. The exact date of Deborah's death and of 2 CONT the births of the younger children, cannot be ascertained, as the records 2 CONT of the first fifteen years of Athol were burned. In a paper signed by 2 CONT James Stratton in 1748, concerning some money coming to his children from 2 CONT the estate of their grandparents, Will and Persis Rand of Charlestown, he 2 CONT refers to his "late wife Deborah." His home was on "The Street" (now 2 CONT Pleasant Street) in that part of Athol then known as "East Pequoid Hill." 1 NOTE In July, 1732, the "Great and General Court" ordered the laying out of 2 CONT the township of Pequoid six miles square. The committee of survey was 2 CONT instructed to "lay out sixty-three house-lots, two for religious 2 CONT purposes, one for a schoolhouse, and one for each of the sixty 2 CONT proprietors who should settle there on." No settlement was made until 2 CONT September, 1735, when five men with their wives "set out on foot from 2 CONT Hatfield, with their clothing, provisions and furniture on their backs" 2 CONT to build new homes in the dense forest. These were Richard and Samuel 2 CONT Morton, Ephraim Smith, John Smeed adn Joseph Lord. The following spring 2 CONT they were joined by others, among them was James Stratton. And here in 2 CONT teh wilderness, fifteen miles from any white settlement, surrounded by 2 CONT prowling, hostile adn treacherous Indians, these heroic men and wome 2 CONT courageously endured privations and hardships, and laid the foundations 2 CONT for the prosperity, independence adn happiness of their descendants. 1 NOTE James Stratton made his will March 15, 1774, adn it was probated November 2 CONT 6, 1776. His death occurred October 22, 1776. He was doubtless buried 2 CONT in the old cemetery on Mill Brook , where the graves of the early 2 CONT seettlers are marked by simple, rough, field stones, with no 2 CONT inscriptions. In1859 the town erected, near the spot where the first 2 CONT meetinghouse stood, a large granite monument in memory of these early 2 CONT settlers. 1 NOTE Will of James Stratton, Sr. 2 CONT 1774 1 NOTE Will allowed Nov. 6th, 1776. 2 CONT In the name of God, Amen, this fifteenth day of March A.D. 1774 I, 2 CONT James Stratton of Athol in ye County of Worcester & Province of ye 2 CONT Massachusetts Bay in New England cordwainer, calling to mind my failty & 2 CONT mortality & knowing that it is appointed to all men once to die, do make 2 CONT & ordain this my last will & testament in manner following that is to say, 2 CONT First of all, I give & recommend my soul to the tender mercy of God 2 CONT through ye merits of my only Lord and jSavior Jesus Christ and my body DI 2 CONT commit to ye earth to be decently buried at ye discretion of my executor 2 CONT hereafter named, and touching such worldly goods and estate wherewith it 2 CONT hath pleased God to bless me in this life, 2 CONT Imprimis my will is that after ye payment of my just debts and 2 CONT funeral charges and I do hereby give sons James Stratton, William 2 CONT Stratton, Stephen Stratton and Peleg Stratton part & part alike in all my 2 CONT estate, two parts to my daughters an including what they have already 2 CONT received from me as part of their portion as may appear on my book of 2 CONT accompts excepting thirteen pounds six shillings and eight pence that my 2 CONT son James Stratton hath received is not to be reckoned as part of his 2 CONT equal portion of my estate with his brethren, it being so much that I 2 CONT have given him more than I have given his brethren because his my old son. 2 CONT Item, I give to my daughters Abigail Chase, Deborah Kendall, 2 CONT Elizabeth Townsend part and part alike in all my estate half as much as 2 CONT my sons including what they have respectively received as part of their 2 CONT portion as may appear on my book of accompts. 2 CONT Item, I give to the heirs of my Grandson John Rand one half part as 2 CONT much as all my estate as one of my daughters including one half of what 2 CONT my daughter Mary Rand received of her portion out of my estate as may 2 CONT appear on my book of accompts. 2 CONT Item, My will further is, That whereas my daughters Deborah Kendall 2 CONT & Elizabeth Townsend lived at my house some time after they were eighteen 2 CONT years old, so that I acknowledge myself indebted to each of them eight 2 CONT pounds, I do hereby order my executor hereafter named to pay each of them 2 CONT eight pounds out of my estate before there be any division of my estate 2 CONT for their service as aforesaid. 2 CONT Item, I do constitute & appoint my well beloved son James Stratton 2 CONT of Athol aforesaid the sole executor of this my last will & testament, 2 CONT renouncing adn forever revoking all other & former wills, ratifying & 2 CONT confirming this and this only as my last will. 1 NOTE James Stratton 1 NOTE Signed, sealed, published & declared by the testator to be his last 2 CONT will in presence of us have set our hands as witnesses ye day & date 2 CONT above. 2 CONT Jno. "Thomas Stratton and Dorcas maxwel Joyned in 2 CONT marriage: July: 19: 1699." Dorcas Maxwell was a daughter of Thomas 2 CONT and Dorcas Maxwell of Boston. She was born February 27, 1678. Thomas 2 CONT Maxwell was a member of the "Scots Charitable Society" in Boston, which 2 CONT determines his nationality. From 1680 onward for about a quarter of a 2 CONT century, he was a "Sealer of Leather" in the town of Boston, and in 1693 2 CONT was a doorkeeper in the "Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay 2 CONT Provence." 1 NOTE Thomas and Dorcas Stratton lived in the Western Precinct of Watertown, 2 CONT where nine children were born unto them. December 1, 1727, Thomas was 2 CONT chosen Surveyor of Highways. In 1731 the town paid him for timber from 2 CONT his farm for a bridge near Deacon Livermore's mill. December 16, 1732, 2 CONT he was still living in Watertown, when "consideration of ye petition of 2 CONT Thomas Stratton and others was adjourned to ye next selectman's meeting." 2 CONT The petition did not come up at the next meeting, and the name does not 2 CONT later occur on the town or church books at Watertown or Waltham. No 2 CONT record of the death of Thomas, nor that of JDorcas, has been found. It 2 CONT is probable that they removed with some of their children to some other 2 CONT town and died there. 1 NOTE Volume II, p. 191: 1 NOTE Recent research has brought to light, from the Cambridge court files, two 2 CONT papers which will be of much interest to all descendants of Thomas 2 CONT Stratton. The first of theses is dated Charlestown, April 15, 1690, and 2 CONT reads as follows: 1 NOTE "To the Hon County Court 2 CONT sitting in Camb. 2 CONT We whose names are underwritten Listed in the service of the country 2 CONT against the French, being ordered down to Charlestown by our Commander 2 CONT Capt. nathaniel Wade do testify, that being denyed Quarters elsewhere in 2 CONT said Town this last night, the Widow Mary Peachie did readily Entertain 2 CONT us with very good usage, and with great care that no disorders might be 2 CONT committed. 2 CONT We therefore Humbly pray that the Hon Court will please to grant her 2 CONT Liberty to renew her License for the year ensuing, & that you will 2 CONT confirm the same to her, wherein you will greatly oblige, 1 NOTE Yo's & the countryes Humble Servts." 1 NOTE To this is attached the signatures of twenty men of the Company, and 2 CONT among them is that of Thomas Stratton. 1 NOTE The second paper, dated Sept. 28, 1738, is as follows: 1 NOTE "Thomas Stratton of Waltham, Husbandman, for divers good causes me 2 CONT moving and L3 sold to my son James at a place called Pequoid all rights 2 CONT the General Court may grant for the expedition of 1690, I being a soldier 2 CONT in the aforesaid expedition in a company that was under Major Waldo's 2 CONT command." 1 NOTE Here is satisfying proof of the colonial war service of Thomas Stratton. 2 CONT It will be remembered that James Stratton, son of Thomas, settled in 2 CONT Pequoid (later Athol) in 1736, on one of the sixty lots granted the 2 CONT proprietors. 1 NOTE As no record of the death of Thomas, or his wife Dorcas, is found in 2 CONT Watertown (or Waltham) it is quite probable that they followed their 2 CONT elder son James to Athol and died there. His marriage is 2 CONT thus recorded on the town books: "John Stratton and Mary smith Joyned in 2 CONT Marryage the 26. 9mo. 1667." From a deposition taken in 1672, we learn 2 CONT that he was born in 1642; hence was twenty-five years old at the time of 2 CONT his marriage. Neither the place, nor exact date of his birth has been 2 CONT found. In 1670 Zachariah Smith "of Piscatqua" met an "untimely death, 2 CONT killed by the Indians." In the settlement of his estate in October, 2 CONT 1672, John Stratton, aged 30 years, of Watertown, and Stephen Smith, aged 2 CONT 25 years, gave depositions concerning "our father Thomas Smith." His 2 CONT home lot in Watertown was in the western part of the town and joined the 2 CONT land of his father-in-law, Thomas Smith. Here John Stratton died April 2 CONT 7, 1691, one month before the birth of his son Samuel. The property 2 CONT remained undivided for some years, the eldest son, John Stratton, Jr., 2 CONT "caring for his mother and her several small children, out of his own 2 CONT proper estate, paying all ye debts truely and honestly and further did 2 CONT manage the husbandry of ye living left by his said father for full 9 2 CONT years." 1 NOTE In January, 1701, "the younger children being well out of hand, the 2 CONT Relect Widdow and her eldest son, did mutuall agree to come to a 2 CONT reckoning according to law and justice." Edward Winn, attorney, of 2 CONT Woburn, was appointed to settle the estate. The widow, Mary, continued 2 CONT to live with her eldest son (who had married Bethshuah Applin) until his 2 CONT death in 1708, followed within a year by the death of his wife, leaving 2 CONT several small children. Then, John Applin, father of JBethshuah, moved 2 CONT with his family into the house owned by "the late John Stratton," and 2 CONT paid a yearly rent. Mary and her orphaned grandhildren seems to have 2 CONT lived with the Applins. January 21, 1713, "John Applin presented a paper 2 CONT showing that his son, John Stratton, died in 1708, and his daughter 2 CONT Bethshuah, wife of John Stratton, in 1709, and that his daughter Mary 2 CONT Applin had charge of the children." 1 NOTE January 1, 1719, "a receipt was filed by John Applin from Mary Stratton, 2 CONT Widow, for her maintenance, in virtue of a bond give by her eldest son 2 CONT John Stratton, Jr.," dated January 13, 1701. 1 NOTE Mary died September 27, 1719, having survived her husband twenty-eight 2 CONT years. 1 NOTE Of this family the births of John, Thomas, James, Judee and Jonathan are 2 CONT the only ones recorded on the town records of Watertown; the baptisms of 2 CONT Mercy and Samuel are from the Bailey Manuscript; court files show that 2 CONT Mary, Sarah and Hannah belonged to this family; no evidence has been 2 CONT found of any other children. 0 @I0159@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Smith/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1647 2 PLAC Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 Sep 1719 2 PLAC Watertown, Massachusetts 1 FAMS @F0053@ 1 FAMC @F0067@ 1 NOTE See information provided under John Stratton. 1 NOTE Information provided in A Book of Strattons, p.155: 1 NOTE He married a daughter of Thomas and Mary (knapp) Smith. At the time of his death 2 CONT (late 1835 or early 1836) he was living in the Baywood area of East Baton 2 CONT Rouge Parish. Succession, dated May 6, 1836, is on record. (The 2 CONT inventory of William naul's estate lists four slaves, one being a 2 CONT 19-year-old male named Hezekiah. St. Helena census records show that he 2 CONT assumed the surname Naul after the Civil War.) 1 NOTE Following the death of her husband, Matilda Lea Naul sold the East 2 CONT Baton Rouge property and moved to the northern part of St. Helena Parish 2 CONT (near Lookout), no doubt to be near her own relatives. Records show that 2 CONT she acquired 126.9 acres by pre-emption and later purchased several 2 CONT tracts of public land at twenty-five cents per acre. 1 NOTE In September, 1842 Matilda naul joined the Line Creek Baptist church 2 CONT "by experience". The date of her death is unknown. It is fairly certain 2 CONT that she is buried in the Renney Lee cemetery in St. Helena Parish. 1 NOTE Of interest is the fact that William R. The 1880 census, Bexar County, Texas, shows 2 CONT another Franklin Naul, also born in Louisiana in 1832. According to teh marriage records of Mercer County, Kentucky, 2 CONT Martin Nall married (1796) Margaret Wrenn, daughter of Nicholas Wrenn. 2 CONT Margaret Naul was born May 16, 1780. The Bible record of George R. and 2 CONT nancy Naul Lea gives Margaret Naul's name as Margaret Jenkins Naul. 2 CONT Jenkins was evidently her middle name as land records of East Baton Rouge 2 CONT Parish show Margaret Wren Naul. 1 NOTE Martin and Margaret Wren nall (Naul) probably moved to Kickson 2 CONT County, Tennessee, and then, Feb. 7, 1812, Martin Nawl was granted 157 2 CONT 1/4 acres of land (SE 1/4 Sec. 12 T2 R4E) in Amite County, Mississippi at 2 CONT the eastern edge of the present town of Liberty. This was at a time when 2 CONT that area was in dispute between Spain and the United States. The 1816 2 CONT census of the Natchez District lists him as a resident of Amite County. 2 CONT From the time of the Mississippi move on Martin and his children 2 CONT apparently never used the Nall spelling but instead used Naul, although 2 CONT some census records, etc. give the name as Nawl or Nauls. In addition to 2 CONT census records, Bible records, marriage licenses, probate records, and 2 CONT land records have been used. 1 NOTE The 1820 Federal census lists Martin naul as a resident of Amite 2 CONT County, Mississippi, over 45 years of age, with the other members of his 2 CONT household as follows: 2 males 16-26 years of age, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 2 CONT under 10, 3 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45. 1 NOTE Church minutes of the Jerusalem Church, Amite County, as published 2 CONT in Casey's History of Amite County, Miss. show that Martin Naul joined 2 CONT that church "by experience' and was baptized April, 1821. One wonders 2 CONT why his wife and older children are not mentioned. Also, had Martin Naul 2 CONT perhaps been a member of another denomination before 1821? 1 NOTE In May, 1823 Martin Naul became a deacon in the Jerusalem Church and 2 CONT in December, 1825, was given a "letter of dismission"; again with no 2 CONT mention of the wife or children. It was probably at that time that 2 CONT Martin moved to East Baton Rouge Parish, La., where he appears in the 2 CONT 1830 census (age 50-60) with the members of his household as follows: 1 2 CONT male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 50-60. 1 NOTE No record of the purchase of land in Louisiana by Martin Naul has 2 CONT been found. 1 NOTE There is no record of a sale of Martin Naul's Mississippi land, and 2 CONT in October 18, 1847, Hardy Coward received a patent for it. 1 NOTE Margaret Wren Naul died Nov. 21, 1839, and Martin Naul probably 2 CONT lived his remaining years with their son, James P., as census records 2 CONT (East Baton Rouge Parish) show a male of his age in that household in 2 CONT 1840. Martin Naul died August 10, 1843. The birth and death dates of 2 CONT Martin and Margaret Naul are recorded in the David Felps Bible which also 2 CONT includes data regarding Janes and Jane Naul Felps as well as some data 2 CONT for James and Malinda Felps Naul.
