McQuail 1983 1 CONT 1 CONT Being born April 12, 1914, Easter Sunday, the beginning of this tale 1 CONC will be a bit jumbled. I was delivered at home by Dr. Kirk at Ennis, 1 CONC West Virginia on the N & W main line in the Pocanhontas Coal Field. My 1 CONC father was james A. McQuail and my mother, Florence Hewitt, both children 1 CONC of coal operators. The only recollection I have of my mother is of her 1 CONC in a white Red Cross unifor, rolling bandages and when whe kissed me 1 CONC good-bye on her way north. Mother died in the great flue epidemic of 1 CONC 1919 (January). 1 CONT A coal camp was a splendid place for a child to grow up. Fraulein 1 CONC Ritzler was engaged. It was with great difficulty that Fraulein finally 1 CONC arrived. It seems she had been governess to Senator Grant's children. 1 CONC Senator Grant 1 CONT was Elihu Root's son-in-law. Elihu Root had been Secretary of State. My 1 CONC father told us that the government wanted to inter Fraulein , but he 1 CONC pleaded for her on the grounds that a German spy could see, hear or do 1 CONC nothing in Widemouth Hollow...so Fraulein arrived, a truly great woman, 1 CONC who was to have great influence on all our lives. 1 CONT Hiawatha was about two miles long and two hundred yards wide. In 1 CONC the center were the company store, the company offices and the 1 CONC engineering office, all in the same building. Alongside the store, on 1 CONC the west side, was a hand-propelled rail car, which carried freight to 1 CONC the store or the platform by the road. Fifty years to the west was Dr. 1 CONC Schuler's office. He was the company doctor and took care of all 1 CONC ailments, except births and venereal diseases, for a small fee deducted 1 CONC from each miner's pay. Dr. Schuler had the neatest little tricycle that 1 CONC ran on the railroad rails. He lifted it off and on the the rails with 1 CONC ease and then took off up the mountain on his rounds. Also on the north 1 CONC side was our house--54 steps up from the office. With baby's arrival, 1 CONC father had a huge sleeping porch built above the old porch. The house 1 CONC sat on a spot dug out from the side of the mountain. From the porch to 1 CONC the east, one could see the stable, miners' houses, the white and colored 1 CONC churches. West Virginia 10 (the worst highway in the world) twisted and 1 CONC turned on its way to Matoka and Rock. Farther to the west was the tipple 1 CONC with its coke ovens, powerhouse, shep and water pumping station for the 1 CONC whole operation and the water tank high up on the hill. At the western 1 CONC boundary was Honaker's Store, which sold nails, feed, shotgun and rifle 1 CONC shells, hay, grain, dried beans, harness, guns, coal oil and all 1 CONC essentials. Honaker's Store being on private land made it possible for 1 CONC this. The eastern boundary was Smokeless and other mines, iperated by D. 1 CONC S. Hunt and Paul Vest. Coming up Widemouth Hollow, beginning with the 1 CONC junction of the creek with the Bluestone River, northwest to the fork in 1 CONC the creek, preseeding northwest, the mines were Powama, Piedmont, 1 CONC Smokeless, Hiawatha, Springton and Dott. On the left branch proceding 1 CONC southwest were Wyenoke, Modoc and Arista. All of this was surrounded by 1 CONC hog bach and the mountains. The hills were very steep, covered by 1 CONC Walnut, Chestnut (the Chestnut blight had not reached here yeat), White 1 CONC Pine, Hemlock, Tulip Poplar and giant Rhodendron, as well as Chinquapin. 1 CONC Some of the trees were forty feet high without a knot. There was a 1 CONC sawmill, but it had no permanent home, it was moved from place to place, 1 CONC leaving huge pikes of sawdust to mark its presence. It made a shrill 1 CONC scream when the log hit the saw blade. 1 CONT The main reason for all the preceding lay about two hundred vertical 1 CONC feet above our house. A seam of Pocohontas Smokeless Coal, Number Three 1 CONC Seam was at that time (and still is) considered to be the finest steam 1 CONC coal in the world. There was only on drift mouth at this time; Number 1 CONC One. There were more added later. They were Number Two (or the Three 1 CONC j's; named for my sister Joanna; my brother Jimmie and I, John.) The 1 CONC other drifts wee Number Three and Number One and One-half. A tramway 1 CONC connected all three tracks at the Head House at the tipple. The slate 1 CONC dump or bone pile was another striking feature of the landscape. It was 1 CONC a huge pile of cull coal, slate and bone (burnable). It was worthless. 1 CONC This pile smoked and firelight flickered day and night, winter and 1 CONC summer. I remember when two hobos slept on the pile and were found 1 CONC dead. Carbon Monoxide got them! 1 CONT One other point of interest are the farms on the mountain tops. 1 CONC These were farmed mostly by Blakenships, Baileys and Shrewsberrys. I 1 CONC hope this is enough background for anyone to follow the tales I am going 1 CONC to spin. 1 CONT 1 CONT "The Company Store" John H. McQuail 1983 1 CONT 1 CONT At the hub of most of the daily activity was the Company Store. 1 CONC Jimmie, John and Joanna were not often allowed to go down the hill, 1 CONC across the road, down seven steps to the store platform. 1 CONT The store building was constructed of wood with clapboard siding and 1 CONC a real tin roof (the kind that was soldered a every seam). On all sides, 1 CONC but the north, the store was surrounded by a platform which was wide, but 1 CONC wider on the south side. From the south platform there stretched a 1 CONC walkway across Widemouth Creek to the stretch of gravel and cinders that 1 CONC served as a station platform. A set of tracks for a hand car was on the 1 CONC western side. This served to bring freight and baggage to and from the 1 CONC store. Around the whole platform was a galvanized wrought iron pipe 1 CONC railing, which was kept shiny by the sitters, leaners and children 1 CONC running along polishing the rail with their hands. 1 CONT In the basement were barrels of coal oil, molasses and vinegar. 1 CONC Pipes led from the barrels through the first floor to the pumps. Anyone 1 CONC desiring liquids brought their own container. On the east side were some 1 CONC large windows and a door leading to the offices. On the south side were 1 CONC the show windows and a pair of double doors; the west side had doors for 1 CONC deliveries. A U-shaped counter from show window to show window inside 1 CONC the store, with stock stored under the counter. Various items too 1 CONC numerous to mention. A large walk-in regrigerator where the ice and meat 1 CONC were kept. The ice came by train...a car was filled with ice...300 lb. 1 CONC cakes. The ice was sold out of the car in five, ten and twenty-five cent 1 CONC pieces. The store bought enough for a few days. On the back side were 1 CONC shelves from floor to ceiling with a rolling ladder which Jimmie and I 1 CONC took turns in giving each other rides. 1 CONT The meat was mostly pork and a little beef (mostly the beef was for 1 CONC our family). The vegetables were fine as long as the Italians, 1 CONC Hungarians and Austrians were in the camp; but, Detroit opened up, so 1 CONC they left for richer fields. After they left, we had snapbeans, picked 1 CONC when turning to leather. There was a room which held about twenty tons 1 CONC of fatback--clear, with no streaks of lean--the best! 1 CONT There was a thriving bartering business going on with the hill 1 CONC farmers: eggs, chickens, cabbage, sauerkraut, strawberries, in season, 1 CONC onions and potatoes, apples and peaches. All of this was transported by 1 CONC mule or horseback. Some of the most beautiful baskets were used to 1 CONC transport the cargo. Mr. J.B. came out and dickered for the different 1 CONC items; the farmers taking mostly flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and 1 CONC baking soda. 1 CONT Big changes were coming. Ready-made clothing was creeping in..no 1 CONC more made from scratch. The bolts of cloth were not moving...hard times 1 CONC hit Uncle Frank. 1 CONT Cigarettes (ready-made, that is) were just coming in. Bull Durham 1 CONC and Five Brothers were the 'make your own' leaders. Pall Mall and Sweet 1 CONC Caporole in front of the ready made. 1 CONT Under the cash register was the carbide, stored in a thirty-gallon 1 CONC galvanized can, and scattered around the store were Daisy fly killers, 1 CONC with their dead and dying flies. Mr. John B. Harry, Store Manager, was a 1 CONC heavy-set man and I never saw him without a cigar in his mouth. Chewing 1 CONC tobacco was sold by the plug or loose. A neat little plug cutter, like a 1 CONC toy guillotine, was used. Once Jimmie and I snuk a little plug and were 1 CONC we sick? 1 CONT Fraulein and father raised heck, but the hill people said it was good for 1 CONC us since it took care of our worms! John B. and his helpers used the 1 CONC neatest shiny brass scoops to dip out the dried beans, peas, flour, 1 CONC cornmeal, sugar, coffee, salt, and carbide, all with the same scoop. 1 CONC Today, there would be six or seven different agencies looking into all 1 CONC angles of the food handling. The cookies and fig bars came in large 1 CONC boxes with a hinged glass top. The crackers came in a barrel. The bread 1 CONC was made at home or at the outdoor oven, near the coke ovens. Later, a 1 CONC gasoline-fired bakery opened up in Matoka, but it didn't last long--the 1 CONC bread had a 'gassy' smell. 1 CONT An elevator ran from the basement to the second floor. This was a 1 CONC shaky, open-on-all-sides affair. It was started and stopped by a cable 1 CONC with knobs clamped on at proper intervals. On the second floor were 1 CONC stoves, wash tubs, pails and a few coffins. A 'cradle to the grave' sort 1 CONC of thing. The store was where they brought the accident victims from the 1 CONC mines, then they rode the train to the hospital in Bluefield. 1 CONT Money was not used much. Scrip was issued by the company scrip 1 CONC clerk. A lot has been said about the scrip system--it had its 1 CONC points--good and bad. It was used like money, which it really was. It 1 CONC could only be used in the company store, the drug store, movie theatre 1 CONC and church. Scrip was only used for early pay withdrawal. Sometimes the 1 CONC three Js got inside the store, but we were chased soon enough. 1 CONT Starting about two o'clock, the miners would drift down the hill to 1 CONC the store. Coal loaders first , motor men, track men, mule drivers, 1 CONC slate men all gathered on the store platform drinking 'pop' or coke, 1 CONC mostly pop as the bottles held more. Some of the coal loaders stoppped 1 CONC in the office to pick up orders for powder and caps. Nearly everyone 1 CONC purchased a little poke of carbide which they put into in waterproof 1 CONC flasks. At this time, open lights were allowed inside the mine. The men 1 CONC chatted and mingled in small groups, faces all black with white circles 1 CONC around their eyes. The colored and white all mingled together at work, 1 CONC but that's where it started and stopped. 1 CONT I know most of these men when I was five, and later when I was 1 CONC twenty. Lester Mack, Main Line Motorman; Toad Goad, Gathering Motorman; 1 CONC Ira Vaughn, Blacksmith. Ira's right arm was three times bigger than his 1 CONC left, due to using a heavy hand hammer. Mr. Casey was the scrip clerk 1 CONC and bookkeeper. He had been in the Merchant Marine in the First World 1 CONC War, had astint as a brakeman on the Virginian Railway before coming to 1 CONC Hiawatha. The swamper was an Italian, whose only name was Patsy. He 1 CONC swept out the offices and store and kept the outside clean and neat. He 1 CONC cut the grass or shoveled snow, as the case may have been. 1 CONT On the south side, across the creek, was a little on-room post 1 CONC office. The Postmaster was 'Preacher'. Goad Toad's father. The mail 1 CONC was delivered by train twice a day. We received Philadelphia mail the 1 CONC day after it was mailed. Someone robbed the postoffice once. Preacher 1 CONC never reported it, nor told anyone about it. Years later, a man came up 1 CONC and asked Preacher if they ever caught the robber? Preacher said "We got 1 CONC him now!" or so it was told to me. The payroll came in by train. 1 CONC Paydays were the first and fifteenth. The pay was all coin; gold, silver 1 CONC and copper. The money (in canvas bags) was pitched out and taken to the 1 CONC scrip office, where the payroll had been made up. The mem would come 1 CONC into the scrip office, sign the payroll book and get paid. The three Js 1 CONC were kept clear of payday goings-on and the rough language. 1 CONT My Uncle Frank Watson sold dry goods; all types of sheeting, dress 1 CONC goods and trimmings. He came around about once a month. The amazing 1 CONC fact was that Uncle Frank was color-blind. 1 CONT A large walk-in vault was located in the main office--very 1 CONC impressive, but the vault's ceiling was just a plaster shell. Its 1 CONC contents ere mostly ink, paper, pencils, notebooks and sundries. On the 1 CONC floor of the vault tow large bags shared space with a case of Winchester 1 CONC 30/30 rifle and two or three cases of shells. I still have one of the 1 CONC rifles on my gun rack. I can see it now from where I sit. The rifles 1 CONC had been purchased in the big shootout at Freeburn, Kentucky. On the 1 CONC strength of that, my little grandchildren, let's all go to bed and take 1 CONC these ramblings up another day. 0 @I0023@ INDI 1 NAME Helen Blanche /Walley/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 31 Dec 1912 2 PLAC Trenton, NJ 2 SOUR From Helen, Baptismal Cert says 12/28/1912 1 DEAT 2 DATE 12 Oct 1988 2 PLAC Kent General Hospital, Dover, DE 2 SOUR Helen McQ Armstrong 1 FAMS @F01@ 0 @I0025@ INDI 1 NAME Franziska /Reed/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 Jan 1942 2 PLAC Bryn Marr, Pa 2 SOUR Joanna McQ Reed 1 ADDR 160 Quincy St 2 CONT 2 CONT Chevy Chase 2 CONT MD 2 CONT 20815 2 CONT 1 FAMS @F14@ 1 FAMS @F15@ 1 FAMC @F05@ 0 @I0026@ INDI 1 NAME Florence Jane /Reed/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 Jul 1943 2 PLAC BrynMarr, Pa 2 SOUR Joanna McQ Reed 1 FAMS @F47@ 1 FAMS @F16@ 1 FAMC @F05@ 0 @I0027@ INDI 1 NAME George Arthur /Reed/ III 1 ALIA GAR /Reed/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 Apr 1945 2 PLAC Bryn Marr, Pa 2 SOUR Joanna McQ Reed 1 _FA3 2 PLAC Chef 1 _FA4 2 DATE 1993 2 PLAC Village Cafe, Birchrunville, PA 1 FAMC @F05@ 0 @I0028@ INDI 1 NAME Susan McQuail /Reed/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 Aug 1948 2 PLAC Bryn Mawr, Pa 2 SOUR Joanna McQ Reed 1 ADDR 2205 S.W. I 1 CONT knew that Larry cared for me, but something would change our 1 CONT blissful past into a future of struggle and strife. My parents had 1 CONT been understanding and nurturing, yet blind to the turmoil which 1 CONT had buried itself deep within the hearts of both my brother and I. 1 CONT Their disciplinary actions would ultimately mold Larry and I into 1 CONT two very different people, and the situation was not at all helped 1 CONT by a host of tragic events occurring in the year 1988. It is the 1 CONT sum of the elements of one's environment that equal the man. 1 CONT 1 CONT Previously my brother and I had been the best of friends and 1 CONT had never experienced a moment of disagreement. In fact, it was 1 CONT Larry who suggested that I, his baby brother would share his room. 1 CONT I learned to respect my big brother and would follow him anywhere. 1 CONT We played various war games and had a lofty collection of GI Joe 1 CONT action figures. I enjoyed an occasional victory or triumph, but I 1 CONT knew the accomplishment stemmed from my brothers own mind. I knew 1 CONT he had let me win. We played together often, but I would grow 1 CONT tired of participating in games I could not win. My brother had 1 CONT shed his youthful understanding of patience and modesty. He would 1 CONT place blame upon me for any simple accidental destruction and 1 CONT complained constantly of how messy I kept our room. I began to 1 CONT resent his constant rages and would avoid all contact, which did 1 CONT not help the conflict resolve, but rather accelerated the process 1 CONT of brotherly strife. My brother had become a contrary hypocrite. 1 CONT He attempted to discipline me, and maintained a philosophy of "do 1 CONT as I say, not as I do." This made it difficult for me to accept 1 CONT him, as one does a parent, because he had become a role model with 1 CONT no moral and code, therefor I would not recognize nor respect his 1 CONT demands for proper behavior. This would mark the beginning of our 1 CONT troubled years ahead, and foreshadow other influential forces as it 1 CONT was he who would not accept parental domination. 1 CONT 1 CONT Our parents loved us both, but Larry was always a bit more 1 CONT accustomed to absolute freedom, yet ultimate accountability and 1 CONT responsibility. My parents never saw the hate that boiled between 1 CONT my brother and myself, nor did they expect Larry to cause so much 1 CONT trouble. An ultimate factor in my brother's and my strained 1 CONT relation would be the disciplinary actions of our parents. I was 1 CONT certainly younger and smaller than Larry, and it was my lack of 1 CONT experience and size that caused my parents to side with me more 1 CONT often than not. It was my quality relation with my parents that 1 CONT pushed my brother to seek attention by causing trouble at school. 1 CONT Therefor, it was my brother's getting into trouble that caused 1 CONT friction between himself and my parents. My father owns a repair 1 CONT service in Blackbird which was my parents idea of discipline. My 1 CONT brother would get a taste of responsibility and work with my father 1 CONT after getting sent home from school one to many times, yet I felt 1 CONT no justice had been served. At the shop my brother was granted the 1 CONT knowledge of automobile repair and was required to drive cars for 1 CONT deliveries. I grew jealous of his privileged punishment, but could 1 CONT do nothing. I was always well behaved and had the luxury of 1 CONT growing up slowly and completely because of my staying out of 1 CONT trouble. My brother and I still had no common ground and things 1 CONT would get worse. 1 CONT 1 CONT The year 1988 was a strange one, filled with endless tragedies 1 CONT and new experiences which further alienated myself and my brother. 1 CONT My grandfather, on my mother's side, had passed away early in the 1 CONT year. It was tragic for all of us, but my brother took it 1 CONT particularly hard. We moved to my grandmother's house and had an 1 CONT addition built on. It was on the day that the workers broke earth, 1 CONT in October, for the foundation, that my grandmother also passed 1 CONT away. These deaths were compounded by the addition of entering a 1 CONT new school. My brother was not readily accepted by his new peers 1 CONT and would have to accept the already established hark of 1 CONT popularity. School was not a question of intelligence, but rather 1 CONT attitude and patience. I did well in my studies and enjoyed 1 CONT learning new things, which seated me well in the favor of my 1 CONT parents. My brother continued to cause trouble but it would seem 1 CONT my parents let him get away with so much. I was still very jealous 1 CONT of all the things that Larry got to do. My philosophy was one of 1 CONT patience, and virtuous knowledge, whereas it was my brother who 1 CONT lived for the moment. I loved him for his free playful self, but 1 CONT was not granted a reciprocated love and respect. My brother could 1 CONT not deny his outwardly inherited nature. His experiences made him 1 CONT more accustomed to reality because he had worked for not only my 1 CONT father, but for all of us, in that we all benefited from the 1 CONT revenue taken in from the shop. 1 CONT 1 CONT A man is quite simply the sum of all his experiences, and it 1 CONT is the strife and struggle between men that stems from their 1 CONT differences. My brother and I could not have shared a different 1 CONT childhood as it was simply the act of fate that dealt us tragedy or 1 CONT prosperity, just as it was individual character that allowed us to 1 CONT deal with any circumstance in any number of ways. Larry and I are 1 CONT two separate beings with two very different philosophies, which 1 CONT both stem from our experiences with our parents and our daily 1 CONT trials of life. 1 CONT 1 CONT John A.
