Earl was responsible for the name change from the McNaughton to 2 CONT MacNaughton. We thought this was done so that no one would think he was 2 CONT Irish, but learned later that it was done so that no one would think he 2 CONT was Catholic. 2 CONT His father died when he was eight years old, and his younger sister 2 CONT Lucille was taken in by her Aunt Eva, but he remained at home with his 2 CONT mother, Florence. That he resented this seems apparent from the 2 CONT alienation of this part of the family. His sister was brought up in 2 CONT luxury, while he and his mother struggled. I'm sure he began working as 2 CONT a child to help them along. He must have missed the companionship of his 2 CONT little sister and their relationship probably never was what it should 2 CONT have been. There was plenty of family money and Charles provided for both 2 CONT of these grandchildren in his will, but the administration of that money 2 CONT was left to Eva, and I don't believe he saw any of it. It is possible 2 CONT that it was given to Florence and she may have used it for everyday 2 CONT living, instead of applying it to his education as Charles intended. We 2 CONT know he never attended college as many of the other members of his family 2 CONT did, and do not know if he even finished grammar school. 2 CONT On Monday, 15 June 1916, he married Anna Peetz at the bride's home. 2 CONT At the time of their deaths, they were married 54 years and at all 2 CONT appearances were a happy, loving couple, despite Pop's gruffness. 2 CONT Grandma knew he was really a teddy bear. 2 CONT They lived most of their lives together at their home at 878 Fourth 2 CONT Avenue, Troy. It was a house that they purchased and had moved to that 2 CONT location. The house was sold by their sons after their deaths. Their 2 CONT lives together saw both World Wars and the Great Depression. Although he 2 CONT was at a draftable age during World War I, we do not believe he ever 2 CONT served. At that time he was the sole support of his mother, wife and 2 CONT children, and that may have been the reason, or he may have had a job 2 CONT that exempted him. He was very proud that his son's enlisted for World 2 CONT War II, and at the time of their deaths, thier home still contained 2 CONT mementos of their sons' service. 2 CONT Pop suffered most of his life with diabetes and a foot infection 2 CONT caused the amputation of one of his legs in his older years. He learned 2 CONT to walk, with the help of crutches, on an artificial leg and thus 2 CONT remained fairly active until his last year of life. 2 CONT Pop's gruff manor, which was probably more pronounced in his later 2 CONT years, always scared his grandchildren when they were young. As they 2 CONT grew up, they realized this was just his way of hiding a too-soft heart. 2 CONT He liked to use the work "Hark" to quiet them down when he felt they were 2 CONT being too noisy. 2 CONT Warren was the only great-grandchild they ever saw, and he delighted 2 CONT them greatly. After Pop's death, while we were gathered at Aunt 2 CONT Lillian's, Warren who was three, informed us that he was going to be a 2 CONT doctor when he grew up. He would invent a pill so that we would not 2 CONT die. Even he felt the loss to these two lovely people. They are buried 2 CONT at Elmwood Hill Cemetary off Pawling Avenue in Troy. 2 CONT In their wills, they left everything equally to their two sons, whom 2 CONT they loved equally, except for their camp in Schuylerville, which they 2 CONT left solely to Uncle Mac. (This camp was actually sold long before their 2 CONT death's so did not become an issue) We believe this was probably because 2 CONT it was Uncle Mac and Aunt Lillian who were always there for them when 2 CONT they needed anything. That their son John would have liked to be as good 2 CONT to his parents as his brother, I have no doubt, but we often sacrifice a 2 CONT great deal to satisfy the wrong person. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sources: Wills of Earl L. The box was glanced through, and 2 CONT tucked away, to be explored at leisure. It wasn't looked at again, 2 CONT however for ten years, when you guys came home to report you had to do a 2 CONT genealogy. That box contained the information which gave me several 2 CONT generations of the MacNaughton family and what their lives were about. 2 CONT Old, yellowed, brittle newspapers unfolded the stories of the deaths of 2 CONT Frederick Lester in 1901 and his mother and aunt, eight years later. 2 CONT Frederick Lester was the third child and second son of Charles and 2 CONT Mary Jane Capron. He was born on 10 Street in Troy, amid many aunts, 2 CONT uncles and cousins who lived there also, which I discovered through 2 CONT census records. At that time, the buildings were new and housed much of 2 CONT the personel for RPI and Emma Willard School. As to his education, I 2 CONT have no knowledge, but his employment did not indicate that it could have 2 CONT been extensive. His brother Herbert graduated from RPI, but with fifteen 2 CONT years seperating these two brothers, the family finances most certainly 2 CONT improved, as is obvious from the purchase of the house at 136 Oakwood 2 CONT Avenue, some time later. 2 CONT Whether he met Florence socially or through work, I do not know, but 2 CONT knowing where their families resided in former times, it could have been 2 CONT through some mutual family member or friend. I have copies of their 2 CONT wedding announcement, and it appears that no expense was spared there. I 2 CONT have never seen a picture of Florence as a young girl, but she was quite 2 CONT handsome in her later years, so she must have been a pretty girl. That 2 CONT Frederick was very handsome, is evident in his picture. They lived in 2 CONT Troy and had two children, a son and a daughter, and if this was all 2 CONT there was to their lives, it would seem to be the perfect "Story-Book" 2 CONT romance. 2 CONT However, Frederick was destined to die in a terrible train crash at 2 CONT the age of 29, on his daughter's third birthday. The crash occured in 2 CONT Schaghticoke, with two trains on the same track, the impact of which 2 CONT killed three and injured three others. They were both freight trains, 2 CONT one with 25 cars, fully loaded, and the one Frederick was on, light. He 2 CONT was a fireman, and so worked outside the protection of the cars, and was 2 CONT relatively new to the job. On impact his body was thrown between two of 2 CONT the cars and he was consequently, decapitated. Cars had to be pulled 2 CONT apart to extricate the body. The only two people to escape without 2 CONT injury were the two conductors, one of whom was on the wrong track, 2 CONT disobeying orders. It was the conductor of the other train, who was 2 CONT later proved in the wrong, and was fired for his actions. Whether any 2 CONT criminal actions were taken, I do not know. I did find the article which 2 CONT told of the findings of the investigation, but did not persue any 2 CONT further. I would like to include a copy of this article, hoping I can 2 CONT get a good copy at the Troy Library, as mine is far too tattered and 2 CONT barely readable. 2 CONT After his death, his daughter went to live with her Aunt Eva, but 2 CONT Earl remained with his mother. When I found the picture of him in 2 CONT the box, I did not know it was him. However, I noticed penciled into the 2 CONT black backing, the words "Frederick the Great". I am assuming it was 2 CONT done by a heartbroken son, but it could have been a heart-sick wife. 2 CONT Whomever, someone thought he was "Great." 2 CONT According to the Newspaper, at the time of his death, he was a 2 CONT well-liked and respected member of the community. He was blue-eyed, 2 CONT brown haired, slim and appeared to be tall, however, the MacNaughton's 2 CONT were not known to be tall, so it probably was just that his slenderness 2 CONT give him that appearance. 2 CONT He is buried in the Platt-McNaughton plot in Oakwood Cemetary, Troy, 2 CONT New York, which is near the Wool Memorial (The tallest monument in 2 CONT Oakwood). This family plot was purchased by Eva, so the large Platt 2 CONT stone dominates it, but except for this wealthy second husband of hers, 2 CONT the remainder of the plot contains MacNaughton family members and their 2 CONT spouses. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sources: The Troy Daily Press, Thursday, March 28, 1901 2 CONT Copy of Wedding Announcement Original in possession of 2 CONT Glen MacNaughton 2 CONT The Wilbores in America, 2nd Edition pub. 1933 (see 2 CONT Florence Haight J-8421 (3) 2 CONT Collaboration of Ruth McNaughton Gentile, RI 0 @I037@ INDI 1 NAME FLORENCE /HAIGHT/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1866 2 PLAC Stillwater, NY 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1933 2 PLAC Troy, NY 1 CONF 2 PLAC BURIED AT OAKWOOD CEMETARY, TROY, WITH HER HUSBAND BUT HAS NO STONE 1 REFN 17. 1 FAMS @F03@ 1 FAMC @F11@ 1 NOTE FLORENCE HAIGHT WIFE OF FREDERICK L. I remember a 2 CONT comment Grandma (Anna Peetz) made once of her husband's mother being a 2 CONT lovely lady. She had a difficult life, obviously, having to support 2 CONT herself and her son after the death of her husband and it must have been 2 CONT very hard for her to give up the care of her daughter to her 2 CONT sister-in-law to raise. Most of this information was given to us by Ruth 2 CONT Gentile, the daughter of Herbert, who was very close to her father and he 2 CONT conveyed much of the family history to her. Ruth informed us of the 2 CONT whereabouts of all the family grave sights, as well as supplying 2 CONT pictures, wills and marriage certificates. 2 CONT I do know from census records that she lived most of her life in 2 CONT Stillwater, had a brother and a sister, and that at one time her father 2 CONT was a bartender at one of the hotels in Saratoga. 2 CONT She was eight years older than her husband, and never remarried. 2 CONT She went to work in one of the clothing factories after her husband's 2 CONT death, and worked there until she retired. After her retirement, she 2 CONT went to live with her daughter, until her own death. Prior to that, she 2 CONT had lived with her son, but I was happy to know that she did get to share 2 CONT in her daughter's life in her later years. 2 CONT At the time of her husband's death, his body was wedged between two 2 CONT cars, and could not be removed until the cars were moved. He was 2 CONT decapitated, so the whole scene had to be quite grusome. She went with 2 CONT her father-in-law to identify the body and take it to the funeral home. 2 CONT I found this strange, as at that time, women were for the most part, 2 CONT spared a scene like that. Certainly, his father could have accomplished 2 CONT the identification without her. Perhaps it was a need within her to see 2 CONT for herself that the nightmare was real. 2 CONT The newspaper article regarding this crash stated that they resided 2 CONT on Fifth Avenue in Troy at the time of his death, and mentioned the 2 CONT sadness of the fact that the family was planning a birthday party for 2 CONT their young daughter that evening, and that he was hoping to get back in 2 CONT time for it. 2 CONT The Letters of Administration for his estate, however, were drawn 2 CONT from the Saratoga Surrogate's Court by Florence, naming her as a resident 2 CONT of the Town of Halfmoon, as was he. This, I would presume an error, as 2 CONT it seems more likely to me that after his death, she may have gone back 2 CONT to her parent's home. I do not believe that her husband ever resided in 2 CONT Halfmoon. I'm also not aware of her parents ever living in Halfmoon, 2 CONT although I know they did live in Saratoga County most of their lives, and 2 CONT are buried in Stillwater. She may also, have gone to stay with her 2 CONT brother, or perhaps they had purchased a house that they had not yet 2 CONT moved into before he died. She was designated as the Administrator of 2 CONT his estate the 8th of July, 1901. 2 CONT The remainder of her life, I know little about. She came from a 2 CONT very historic and colorful family, as will become evident as this 2 CONT genealogy unfolds. The one picture I have of her presently, is of her 2 CONT later years. She is attractive and looks pleasent and good natured. 2 CONT Whether her eyes are blue or hazel like her father's is difficult to 2 CONT determine, but they do not appear to be brown. It is also evident in 2 CONT that one picture that she had a stigmatisim in one of her eyes. Whether 2 CONT she had it all of her life, or just in her later years, I do not know. 2 CONT Aunt Lillian showed me a younger picture of her once when we were going 2 CONT over pictures with them, but I do not know what has become of it. 2 CONT She is buried with her husband in Oakwood Cemetary in Troy, in the 2 CONT only unmarked grave in the plot. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sources: Marriage announcement (Orig. in possession of Glen MacNaughton 2 CONT The Troy Daily Press, Thursday, March 28, 1901 2 CONT Letter of Administration, 8 July 1901 2 CONT Ruth McNaughton Gentile, RI 2 CONT The Wildbores in America, 2nd Edition, Pub. 1933 by John 2 CONT Reid Wilbor and 2 CONT Benjamin F. Of his childhood, I know nothing. The only 2 CONT reference I have seen in regard to his occupation listed him as a 2 CONT bartender at one of the major hotels of Saratoga. 2 CONT His grandfather and father were Quakers in earlier times, but 2 CONT Sylvester, and two of his brothers enlisted in the Civil War. His 2 CONT original enlistment paper is in the hands of Glen MacNaughton, who was 2 CONT gracious enough to allow me to copy it, but is in very poor condition as 2 CONT my copy shows. He and his brother Warren married daughters of Parimus 2 CONT and Thankful (Burch) Shrieve, and were married, with children at the time 2 CONT of their volunteering for service to our country. (somewhere, I thought 2 CONT I saw a note of Griffin also marrying one of their daughters, but can't 2 CONT put my hand on it at the moment. As I continue my entries with those 2 CONT families, this may turn up and I will note so on his pages.) 2 CONT Sylvester and Emeline had three children, but their first daughter died 2 CONT as a child. I was not aware of this daughter until, while searching the 2 CONT old Howland Cemetary (now Fairmont Cemetary) located at the intersection 2 CONT of Deans Corners from Grangerville to Stillwater, about 2 miles west of 2 CONT Coveville, we found in a high corner, behind a group of trees two small 2 CONT stones which read: 2 CONT 2 CONT Haight, Laura daughter of SS & EH, died Jan 25, 1865, 2 mos. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mary E. dau of Stephen S. and Susannah Haight, d. Sep. 14, 2 CONT 1860, 5 mos, 11 days. 2 CONT Knowing full well from cencus records that Stephen and Susannah 2 CONT had a daughter Mary, 2mos. at the time of the cencus I have no 2 CONT doubt that these two babies belong to this family. 2 CONT 2 CONT I have never come across any evidence that this couple owned 2 CONT property, nor a will for either. It did 2 CONT not appear that they had much in the way of property. His death 2 CONT certificate gives his address as 872 Third Avenue, North Troy, and gives 2 CONT Florences as the same. So it would appear that he did live with her for 2 CONT some time after the death of his wife. It also listed his occupation as 2 CONT farmer, but every cencus record I looked at had him as a tenent in a 2 CONT urban area, so this surprised me. 2 CONT He is buried with his wife, as well as his son William and his 2 CONT family in the Stillwater Cemetary. There are many Haights located in 2 CONT this cemetary, most of which I have no personal knowledge of where they 2 CONT fit in. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sources: Death Certificate # 585Z 2 CONT Census records of Saratoga County 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 2 CONT 1990. 2 CONT Volunteer Enlistment papers, 1863 2 CONT Wildbores in America, 2nd Edition, pub. 1933 ref. #J-8421 0 @I045@ INDI 1 NAME EMELINE H. /SHRIEVE/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE May 1840 2 PLAC Saratoga, NY 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1 Aug 1904 2 PLAC Troy, NY 1 REFN 35 1 FAMS @F11@ 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 NOTE EMELINE SHRIEVE WIFE OF SYLVESTER HAIGHT - GENERATION V 2 CONT 2 CONT Emeline Shrieve I also have very little personal knowlege of. She lost her father, brother and an infant daughter in 1865 2 CONT and her mother a year later. She was listed in each census record as a 2 CONT housewife. Curiously, Martha died two 2 CONT years before Malcum and in the 1850 cencus, Sheldon Smith and his 2 CONT children resided with them. Yet Elizabeth, a widow with many young 2 CONT children, resided on her own. This may have been because the small 2 CONT children of Lyman needed Martha's care while their father worked, but I 2 CONT found it strange that they left a woman on her own, but took in the man. 2 CONT I have seen no evidence of hard feelings, so have to believe that it was 2 CONT for the care of the children, who both died as children. I have never 2 CONT seen an actual will of Malcum's, and no reference is made of one in the 2 CONT many papers relating to the settlement of his estate. At his death in 2 CONT 1855, his estate appeared to be very large, and much property exchanged 2 CONT hands within the family to settle each child and grandchild's portion. 2 CONT John 2nd (son of Thomas) was alloted a whole share, probably due to his 2 CONT being of full age, his father deceased, the head of that household. There was no record in the Women's monthly 2 CONT meeting to match a record for Stephen marrying out, so it is presumed 2 CONT that his wife was not a Quaker. 2 CONT I have no knowledge of where Stephen and Susannah are buried. Their eldest 2 CONT daughter died at the age of 16 and I've seen no more on the youngest, 2 CONT since she was an infant when her parents were disowned, but her birth was 2 CONT recorded by them and that is the only reference I have seen of her. 2 CONT In The History of Washington County compiled by the Washington 2 CONT County Historical Society, I found two amusing stories on this family: 2 CONT 2 CONT COOPER SHOPS 2 CONT 2 CONT "One of the first Cooper Shops was operated by Isreal Haight, who 2 CONT resided at Beadle Hill. The shop was located "on the bend of the road 2 CONT just east of the Friends' Meeting House" at South Easton. It was 2 CONT represented by descendants of Isreal Haight as being on the east side of 2 CONT the road just as the road originally bent north, but Frank Pratt reports 2 CONT finding old brick, ashes, etc. in the south east corner of the cemetery, 2 CONT so it might have been there. Isreal Haight was married in about 1810, 2 CONT and the cemetery lot was purchased in 1787 by the Society of Friends. It 2 CONT does not, therefore, seem very probable that a cooper shop would have 2 CONT been allowed to be constructed on that lot. 2 CONT There are two stories connected with Isreal Haight which might be 2 CONT related. On the front of the building was the sign--"I. Haight--Cooper." 2 CONT One time a wag (probably what we would call a young wise-guy) came 2 CONT along, and looking up at the sign said, "I hate the Cooper." The owner 2 CONT standing by replied, "I hate thee, too!" 2 CONT His wife's name was Anna Sweet. A verse about her has been handed 2 CONT down by some amateur poet, as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT "When the children of Isreal wanted bread, 2 CONT Jehova sent them manna; 2 CONT When Isreal Haight wanted a mate, 2 CONT The Devil sent him Anna." 2 CONT 2 CONT From friends records it appears that they moved from Easton to 2 CONT Saratoga sometime shortly after their marriage, as the Easton Monthly 2 CONT Meeting Removal Certificates 1790-1959 gives the removal certificate for 2 CONT Anna Haight, wife of Isreal, from Easton to Saratoga on 8/25/1810 then, 2 CONT almost as an afterthought, the removal certificate of Isreal dated 2 CONT 7/16/1812. It was recorded in the Men's Minutes of Easton Monthly 2 CONT Meeting 15th of 6th Month, 1814 that Isreal and Anna moved back to Easton 2 CONT from Saratoga. There were records of only four children, and the death 2 CONT of Mariah, born 11 May, 1811, died 13 May, 1827, aged 16 years, no 2 CONT months, 2 days was also recorded. 2 CONT In 1983, Elizabeth H. Moger, Keeper of the Records, Haviland Record 2 CONT Room, NYC wrote: 2 CONT "The reason we come to a dead end as far as Friends' records go, and 2 CONT why I cannot inform you as to the marriage of Stephen and Susannah, is 2 CONT that the whole family were disowned, one after another. 2 CONT The disownment of Isreal is in the Men's Minutes of Easton Monthly 2 CONT Meeting, 1813-1846, pp. 198-209. On the Tenth Month 13, 1825, we find, 2 CONT 'Easton preparative meeting informs that Isreal Haight neglects the 2 CONT attendance of meetings and refuses the advice of his friends. Adam Allen 2 CONT and Gidion Gifford are appointed to treat with him on those accounts and 2 CONT report thereon to next meeting.' The committee is continued in 12th mo. 2 CONT 1825, in lst mo. 1826 (with addition of Lewis Taber), and 2nd mo. and in 2 CONT 3rd mo. On the 13th of 4th mo., 1826, 'The committee continued to treat 2 CONT with Isreal Haight on account of his deviations, report they have had 2 CONT another opportunity with him, but he did not appear to them to be in a 2 CONT suitable disposition of mind to make friends satisfaction, after a time 2 CONT of consideration it is thought best to proceed toward disownment.' On 2 CONT the Fifth mo. 25, 1826, the committee had not had an opportunity with 2 CONT Isreal on account of his being absent, and were continued, with the 2 CONT addition of Jared Thomas. On 6th mo, 15, 1826, 'The committee continued 2 CONT to inform I. Haight of the conclusion of the meeting and prepare a minute 2 CONT of denial report attention and produced the following minute: Whereas 2 CONT Isreal Haight have had a right of membership with us hath so far deviated 2 CONT from the order of our society, as to neglect the attendance of our 2 CONT religious meetings and refuses the advice of his friends, for all of 2 CONT which he hath been laboured with, but not having the desired effect. 2 CONT Therefore, this meeting doth testify against his said misconduct and 2 CONT disown him from being any longer a member until he shall make 2 CONT satisfaction to this meeting. This Moses resided in Fairfield, CT at least 2 CONT until 1665, so he must have married there. He removed at that time to 2 CONT Eastchester, Westchester County NY, where he was one of the original 2 CONT Townsmen, the sixth name to appear on the original articles of agreement 2 CONT between the inhabitants in 1665, called the "Ten Farms." His name 2 CONT appears on many documents with many variations of the spelling, as anyone 2 CONT who researches this family knows. His brother John was also one of the 2 CONT original propriators, and from somewhere I jotted a note that they 2 CONT appeared to belong to St. Paul's (probably Baptist) Church in 2 CONT Eastchester. So I must question the "meeting-house" pew mentioned in the 2 CONT Hoyt genealogy, as this term was generally used by Quakers. 2 CONT He was the highest taxed on the list of freeholders in 1682, so it is 2 CONT obvious he was very prosperous. In 1685 he contributed L1 towards the 2 CONT support of the minister in East Chester. He came to America in 1628, a free man, probably with 2 CONT his wife and children. He went first to Charlestown, as one of its first 2 CONT settlers. In 1633 it was recorded that having two cows, it is required 2 CONT he put up forty feet of fence on the marsh. The same year was appointed 2 CONT to "see to the fences". "In January of 1633, it was ordered that the 2 CONT marsh before Goodman Hosford and Davy Wilton shall be divided among 2 CONT themselves and Symon Hoyte." In may of 1634 he was appointed to "view 2 CONT the pales-fences, of the North Field" January of same year, "It is 2 CONT ordered that Goodman Witchfield and Goodman Hoyte shall have to be 2 CONT divided between them the marsh that lies in the north neck towards Boston 2 CONT over against Mr. Rainsford's house in Boston being for eight acres by 2 CONT estimation." That same year he is mentioned as "keeping a bull." After 2 CONT this entry, his name appears no more on the Dorchester records. 2 CONT He next appears in Scituate, with he and his wife joining the church 2 CONT there April 19th 1635. "Goodman Hait's house was built in that town 2 CONT between September 1634, and October, 1636." This is the same time frame 2 CONT that he married his second wife, and it seems reasonable to assume that 2 CONT she was the wife who joined with him. He moved from there to Windsor, 2 CONT CT, by 1640 as his name appears there in the records "February 28, 1640, 2 CONT "Symon Hoyt had granted from the Plantation, for meadow and upland, 2 CONT adjoining four score acres, more or less, bounded West by Wm. Hill fro 2 CONT the River back one hundred and twenty rodd to the West, upon the South it 2 CONT bounds from Wm Hill's lott along by the Rivulett until it comes to 2 CONT Mathias Sention's meadow and then it turns about uppon the East and 2 CONT bounds by said meadow in a straight lyne fro the river six rodd and then 2 CONT it turns agayne upon the South, behind the end of Mathias Sention and 2 CONT Baggel Eggleston's meadow until it comes to Elias Parkman's and the Town 2 CONT Swampe and Elias Parkman's meadow bounds it East, until yt com to the 2 CONT foote of the hill in a straight lyne and from thence it turns and bounds 2 CONT upon the North until yt comes to the utmost end of Will Hill's lott." (I 2 CONT have read many property descriptions, having been a legal secretary, but 2 CONT never saw one the likes of this. It turned so many times, I got dizzy. I 2 CONT included it here for the amusement of all.) State papers at Hartford, 2 CONT "Plan of Ancient Windsor" place Simon Hoyt's land on the east side of the 2 CONT river, away from the other settlers. "Hoyt's Meadow" was the name given 2 CONT to that section of Windsor. His family was so far from the other 2 CONT families, that they were exempted from standing guard, as it was 2 CONT considered they would have enough to guard themselves. 2 CONT In 1646 he sold this property to William Thralland and moved to 2 CONT Fairfield. His name does not appear there until March 6, 1649, when he 2 CONT was granted some parcels of land, but he was called "of that Town." 2 CONT Sometime after 1650 he left Fairfield and went to Stamford where he 2 CONT remained until his death in 1657. His death is recorded there twice, 2 CONT once spelled Hoyt and again spelled Hoight. 2 CONT Obviously he was a very restless spirit, energetic and appeared to 2 CONT like his privacy. Perhaps that is part of the reason for his many 2 CONT moves. He helped establish each one of these towns from the wilderness, 2 CONT and accumulated much property in doing so. He personified a pioneer 2 CONT spirit, and left his mark on this country in a way very few other 2 CONT colonists did. In most of the seven towns he helped to establish, he was 2 CONT the first white settler there. His wife must have been a very strong and 2 CONT easy going individual to have tolerated the uprooting of her home about 2 CONT every five years, to return to a wilderness environment and build it all 2 CONT again. Following the lines of any of his decendants, this restless 2 CONT spirit is evident in many. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sources: First Families of America, p. 753 2 CONT Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight Families by 2 CONT David W.
