    2 CONT Nancy Jane Hagaman.

    2 CONT He married Ellen Elizabeth Metcalf and had 6 children.  His wife preceded 
    2 CONT him in death in 1945.  He was married and lived in Buffalo, Illinois 
    2 CONT where his children were born and raised. In or about the year 1912, he 
    2 CONT moved to Cabot, Arkansas and remained there until his death on January 
    2 CONT 22, 1955.  He was 92 years old at this time and I was told that he died 
    2 CONT peaceably in a fishing canoe enjoying his favorite sport. (fishing)

    2 CONT He had 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great 
    2 CONT grandchildren.

    2 CONT I remember meeting him when I was about 3 years old.  I remember that he 
    2 CONT looked alot like my grandmother (his daughter) in features and skin 
    2 CONT coloring.  He was tall and thin.  I was afraid of him and hid behind my 
    2 CONT mother's skirt when he offered me a piece of candy.  I remember my mother 
    2 CONT telling me that I  shouldn't be afraid because that this man was my 
    2 CONT great-grandfather and that he would never hurt me.  I remember that he 
    2 CONT was soft spoken and smiled and hugged alot.  It seemed like he really 
    2 CONT loved children.

    2 CONT He is buried in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, Illinois in 
    2 CONT the Albert Hagaman Family Plot along with his three sons, Harry, Oscar, 
    2 CONT and LaRue (Bootsie) and Larue's first wife Martha.

    2 CONT He belonged to the Christian Church in Cabot, Arkansas.  He was a 
    2 CONT carpenter and house painter by trade.

    2 CONT It is believed that he was named after his Uncle Albert, his father's 
    2 CONT brother.

  1 NOTE Ethel H. Hagaman is my grandmother who at this time is still living and 
    2 CONT in the Walnut Grove Nursing Home in Springfield, Illinois.  She was born 
    2 CONT on July 5, 1894 to Albert and Ellen Metcalf Hagaman.  She married Thomas 
    2 CONT Edion Fish, son of Bryce and Olivia McCall Fish on December 7, 1911.  She 
    2 CONT had five children, one who passed on as an infant.   We are the children 
    2 CONT of her son William Franklin Fish.

    2 CONT Grandma has been and still is the sweetest grandma anyone could ask for.  
    2 CONT She is very tender and has shown love to us throughout our lives.  She 
    2 CONT favors her father, Albert in features and skin color.  She was a very 
    2 CONT beautiful young woman and I can see why my Grandfather chose her for his 
    2 CONT bride.  She is 101 years old as of this date and her beauty and class 
    2 CONT stills shines.  We have always known and felt that she came from a family 
    2 CONT with alot of class because of the way she carried herself around other 
    2 CONT people.  My mother, Doris Jean Fortner Fish, her daughter in law loved 
    2 CONT Grandma and Grandpa very much until the day she died and never spoke a 
    2 CONT harsh word about either of them.

    2 CONT We are dedicating this geneology report to Grandma Ethel H. Hagaman Fish 
    2 CONT to present to her so that she will truly know how much we do love her.

    2 CONT My mother would tell me stories about when I was a baby and we lived with 
    2 CONT Grandma and Grandpa, that I would only go to sleep when Grandma would 
    2 CONT rock me.  I think that it was the same rocking chair that she rocked her 
    2 CONT own infant Thomas in.  She also told me a story about when my brother, 
    2 CONT Tom would bring a picture that he colored to show her, Grandma would sit 
    2 CONT him on her lap and make up stories about the picture even though they 
    2 CONT were just scribbles and illegible.  Those are the tender moments that 
    2 CONT come to mind when I think of my Grandma.  That and the fact that she was 
    2 CONT a wonderful cook.

    2 CONT looks.  Dark haired, tall, and olive skinned like the Dutch Ancestory he 
    2 CONT came from. He was tall and thin favoring the Hagaman side of his family.

    2 CONT He died in 1975 at the age of 81 years and is buried at the Mechanicsburg 
    2 CONT Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, Illinois in the Albert Hagaman Family Plot.

    2 CONT Directions to cemetery are as follows:  Mechanicsburg Road to old route 
    2 CONT 36.  Cemetery on the left.  Turn left on old route 36 and pull off the 
    2 CONT road when you see the first plots.  He is in the first row middle section 
    2 CONT in lot 9.  You do not have to go in the gates of the cemetery to view his 
    2 CONT grave.  It is located nearest to the road.  You can walk up from the 
    2 CONT road.

    2 CONT His occupation was house painter.  It is not yet known whether or not he 
    2 CONT was married or had any children.  He did love children alot.

    2 CONT haired.  The rest were more olive skinned with dark hair.

    2 CONT mentioned it.  She was about 6 years younger than my Grandmother.  She 
    2 CONT was fair skinned and light haired from what I have seen in the only 
    2 CONT picture that I have of her at the age of about 8 or 9 years.  I think 
    2 CONT that she was my Grandmother's only sister.

    2 CONT years.  My Grandmother took this very hard.

    2 CONT young when I did meet him and probably just couldn't remember.  He did 
    2 CONT not visit like Uncle Edgar and Uncle Oscar did.

    2 CONT his second wife Alma.

    2 CONT temperment at times.  He is strong and not afraid of anyone.  He is close 
    2 CONT to his mother, but he also is close to his father.  Part of that reason 
    2 CONT is probably because his father was allowed in the delivery room when he 
    2 CONT was born.  At the hospital, the staff had bonding classes for the fathers 
    2 CONT and his father was allowed to bottle feed him when his mother was not 
    2 CONT nursing.  Jason works as a salesman at Marshall Field and Company and 
    2 CONT attends Harper Junior College in Palatine, Illinois.

    2 CONT He is now home from work standing beside me while I am writing these 
    2 CONT notes and would like everyone to know that he is very good looking and

    2 CONT Moved to Illinois from Kentucky in the middle 1800's and bought 20 acres 
    2 CONT of land in southwest Illinois.  In 1881 he had the land surveyed and sold 
    2 CONT plots to the following families:  Converse, Flanagan, and Shuttleworth.  
    2 CONT At that time the town was formed and named Hagaman, Illinois.  It is 
    2 CONT located about 12 to 15 miles south of Carlinville, Illinois.  The town 
    2 CONT only has about 8 citizens not counting children. At one time the town had 
    2 CONT 3 stores and at least two hotels so it must have been much larger than it 
    2 CONT is today.   J. L. Robinson opened a general store the same year that the 
    2 CONT Railroad first came through, possibly to serve the people traveling on 
    2 CONT the train as well as the surrounding community. John Hagaman was the 
    2 CONT commissioner of roads and highways for Macoupin County in the late 1800's.
    2 CONT
    2 CONT He is buried at the Reader Cemetery in Reader Illinois which is located 
    2 CONT about one mile north of Hagaman at the end of a cornfield.  There are 
    2 CONT about 35 graves there with the Hagaman plot being the largest.  The 
    2 CONT headstone is as tall as his great-great granddaughter who is 5 feet 7 
    2 CONT inches tall. I visited his burial place and found that his infant 
    2 CONT daughter, Hattie's, stone was very hard to read.

    2 CONT Buried with him in the same family plot are Nancy Jane (his wife), his 
    2 CONT son's George and Paschal and his infant daughter Hattie who died at the 
    2 CONT age of 10 months and 3 days old.

    2 CONT To this date I only have discovered 5 children and do not yet know if 
    2 CONT there were more.

    2 CONT To this date, we know of one brother of his, Albert.  They must have been 
    2 CONT close as brothers because he named my Great-grandfather after him.

    2 CONT John's parents or grandparents came from the Netherlands and I am now 
    2 CONT investigating this.  His ancestors name was possibly Jan (John) Hageman 
    2 CONT or Jan Hagerman.  Name could also possibly be Johannes Hageman or 
    2 CONT Hagerman.  I believe that thru my research that Johannes means Joseph in 
    2 CONT Dutch.

    2 CONT All of the Hagaman men were tall and very handsome.  The same is true of 
    2 CONT their descendents.  I personally met and knew his son, Albert (my 
    2 CONT great-grandfather) and Albert's sons Oscar, Larue (Bootsie), and Edgar 
    2 CONT (my great-uncles) and they were all tall and handsome even in their later 
    2 CONT years.  They all seemed to have olive complexion and very dark hair and 
    2 CONT dark eyes. My grandmother Ethel Hagaman Fish is still a very beautiful 
    2 CONT woman at the age of 101 years.  Her skin is also olive colored and her 
    2 CONT eyes are like two big black marbles.

    2 CONT Nancy Jane Reder, my great grandmother was the second wife of John 
    2 CONT Hagaman.  Mrs. Hubbard was his first and she died shortly after the 
    2 CONT marriage.  Annie Flannagan was John's third wife.

    2 CONT He resided in Kentucky until 1834 and in March of that year moved to 
    2 CONT Illinois and settled on the farm in Polk County Township where his son 
    2 CONT still lived until his death.

    2 CONT He and his wife were members of the Christian Church.
