Since his heir and son was born in 1430, I made an 2 CONT assumption that he was probably born in the late 1300's. 1 NOTE The Godfrey family lived in and around Lydd from at least the 600's AD. 2 CONT It seems logical to imagine a direct relationship but proof is lacking. The 2 CONT first five generations of which we have record, show only the heir, not 2 CONT the wife, few dates, no siblings. 1 NOTE Lydd, located in Kent County which is the southeast part of Great Britain, 2 CONT may be found on a triangular protuberance of land about midway between 2 CONT Dover, to it's northeast, famous for it's white chalk cliffs and Hastings, 2 CONT to it's southwest, famous for being the site of the battle of the 2 CONT Anglo-Saxons and the Normans in 1066. The Kent County area of Great 2 CONT Britain was conquered by the brothers, Hengist and Horsa in 449 AD. They 2 CONT were Jutes and had been asked by the Britains to help them defend 2 CONT against the Picts. After the Picts were defeated, Hengists and Horsa 2 CONT settled in Kent. Eventually they revolted against the Britains and Horsa 2 CONT was killed. 1 NOTE The Jutes are believed to be related to the inhabitants of Jutland. Today 2 CONT that area is called Denmark but at that time it also incorporated parts of 2 CONT northern Germany. The Angles and the Saxons originated in the same 2 CONT general area. The area of Kent bordered the territory of the Saxons, who 2 CONT with the Angles also helped to settle Britain and drove the Britains 2 CONT westward into present day Wales, (Celts?). These are the people who 2 CONT gave the name to England, (Angleland?). 1 NOTE Through assimilation, the Jutes gradually lost their identity as a people 2 CONT and by the 8th Century the term Jute had almost disappeared from the 2 CONT English language. The above information is according to the Anglo-Saxon 2 CONT historian, Bede the Venerable and from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. 1 NOTE In all probability, at least that branch of our family tree was Germanic 2 CONT in it's origin. 1 NOTE 650 AD. Godfrey held manors in Petham and West Farleigh. "A Knight of 2 CONT the Archbishop" held him in Lenham and some lands in Shippey. Godfrey 2 CONT obtained lands from Henry 2nd. Lenham still exists and may be found 2 CONT midway between Maidstone and Ashford, all in Kent County. Shippey does 2 CONT not exist by that spelling, but there is an island of Shippey straight 2 CONT north of Lenham. Petham and West Farleigh both still exist. 1 NOTE As you read through this Family Tree, as I have tried to recreate it, you 2 CONT will find frequent references to the title "Esquire" or "Esg". As near as I 2 CONT am able to tell, Esquire was, with the English Gentry, a rank just below 2 CONT "Knight" and it also denotes a substantial land owner. They would be 2 CONT addressed as "So and So of Lydd, Esquire". A knight would be addressed as 2 CONT "Sir So and So". There is at least one identifiable knight in the family and 2 CONT most all were landed. 1 FAMS @F1@ 0 @I2@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1430 2 PLAC Lydd,Kent County,England 1 NOTE Thomas Godfrey, son of James, died in 1430 and is buried at the Lydd 2 CONT Church, Kent County, England. 1 FAMS @F2@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I3@ INDI 1 NAME Joan /Tamworth/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F2@ 0 @I4@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F3@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Peter /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F4@ 1 FAMC @F3@ 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F5@ 1 FAMC @F4@ 0 @I7@ INDI 1 NAME Peter /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1566 1 FAMS @F6@ 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @I8@ INDI 1 NAME Joan /Epes/ 1 SEX F 1 NOTE Joan was the daughter of John Epes. 1 FAMS @F6@ 0 @I9@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1547 2 PLAC Lydd,Kent County,England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1623 2 PLAC Lydd,Kent County,England 1 FAMS @F9@ 1 FAMS @F8@ 1 FAMS @F7@ 1 FAMC @F6@ 0 @I10@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Patriche/ 1 SEX F 0 @I11@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Allard/ 1 SEX F 0 @I12@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Pix/ 1 SEX F 0 @I13@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Patriche/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F9@ 0 @I14@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Allard/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F8@ 0 @I15@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Pix/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F7@ 0 @I16@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Godfrey/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1585 2 PLAC Hodiford,Sellindge,England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1664 1 NOTE Hodiford was probably the name of lands held by (estate) of Thomas in 2 CONT the Town of Sellindge which is perhaps 25 miles northeast of Lydd. Her 2 CONT handwriting was quite firm as compared to that of her husband who was 2 CONT less than a year older than she. 1 NOTE She had ten children. Five of them reached adulthood. One died at age 21, 2 CONT the rest married and had children of their own. 1 NOTE Since she moved to Bridgeton with the rest of her family, following her 2 CONT mothers death in 1847, when she was only nine, it is quite logical that 2 CONT she would meet and marry David Budd Hallinger, also a resident of 2 CONT Bridgeton. 1 NOTE My grandmother, Anna Mary Hallinger (Warren), was born October 16, 2 CONT 1866, the fourth child of this marriage. 1 NOTE I am confident that Mary Godfrey Hallinger lived beyond April 27, 1927 2 CONT because that is the date Eva Budd Hallinger Bodine, her daughter, signed 2 CONT the Family Tree from which I have gathered much of the information 2 CONT contained herein. If her mother had died prior to that date I am 2 CONT confiddent that her date of death and burial location would have been 2 CONT included in that document. Whether 2 CONT he ever saw me, his great grandson before his death, I have no way of 2 CONT knowing. His wife, Mary was about eight months his junior. She also 2 CONT attended the wedding. Her signature in the guest register was firm, 2 CONT unlike her husbands. 2 CONT I have no information on the date or location of her (Marys) death or 2 CONT burial, but it was probably in Bridgeton, N.J. It is certain that she 2 CONT outlived her husband, because the family tree, as created by Eva Budd 2 CONT Bodine, was completed April 27, 1927. Since she (Eva) was a daughter of 2 CONT David and Mary, and a younger sister of my grandmother, she would 2 CONT surely have known of and noted the death of her mother. We can deduce 2 CONT that she lived to be at least 89 years old. 1 NOTE I have several photographs of this, my Great grandfather and his wife, 2 CONT my Great grandmother. These were taken on the "farm" which I now 2 CONT believe must have been located in or near Bridgeton. They looked like 2 CONT typical farming folk of the time. 1 NOTE The photographs show my Great grandfather on the left, his wife Mary 2 CONT next to him, my grandmother and a lady who looks much like her and may 2 CONT have been her sister, Lillie Francis (Taylor). I knew Lillie and her 2 CONT daughter Marion. After I returned home from the hospital, following my 2 CONT appendectomy in 1928, they visited me in my bedroom and brought me a 2 CONT large grey blue book which contained the Adventures of Teddy A and 2 CONT Teddy B. (What an odd thing to remember after 64 years!) I remember 2 CONT Marion as being very sweet and quite pretty. She would have been about 2 CONT 28 years old. I remeber her mother as being quite domineering, a very 2 CONT strong personality. In the background of the photo there is a younger 2 CONT female who could have been Eva Budd. I judge that the picture was taken 2 CONT about 1906-10. Eva would have been about 30-34, the probable age of the 2 CONT girl I described. She was married at the age of 34. I have been unable to 2 CONT identify the two crouching males on either side of my mother in the 2 CONT front row. I assume my grandfather took the picture, but if not, the man 2 CONT on the right could be him. 1 NOTE I deduce that Budd is a family name and may in fact have been my Great 2 CONT Great grandmothers maiden name. They had six children. 2 CONT There is another brother, Hiram Godfrey. he died at the age of eleven 2 CONT months. 2 CONT The good doctors last sibling was a sister, Jessie, who was born June 2, 2 CONT 1890. She married Edward Coyle, June 4, 1916. Mr Coyle was born July 2 CONT 24, 1879. 1 NOTE Hiram Godfrey hallinger had a second wife, Madeline Pierce. They were 2 CONT married June 2, 1925. I believe this is the "Unlce" Hiram who kept a boat 2 CONT in Ocean City, N.J. and used to take me out on it frequently. I was 2 CONT probably 7-9 years old. He would have been close to seventy. I remeber 2 CONT him as being a slight gentleman with snow white hair and a white 2 CONT trimmed small mustache. His wife, Madeline was a large woman with a 2 CONT pile of white hair. He drove a car which seated two people. I doubt if it 2 CONT had a rumble seat because there was a spare tire which kept me from 2 CONT falling off the rear deck as we drove slowly to the dock. 1 NOTE I also recall my mother and father going out with us once. My mother got 2 CONT terribly seasick and had to lay down in the cabin. (The worst thing she 2 CONT could have done.) I never got seasick until I was an adolescent. By then, 2 CONT "Uncle Hirams" boat was just a memory and perhaps he was too. By then I 2 CONT was going out in a friends fathers boat, the "Billelmcliff", named for the 2 CONT father (Bill) one son, my friend (Elmer) and his younger brother, Clifford. 2 CONT I managed to get sick every time. Never did get over it, yet I quickly got 2 CONT over being airsick which involves even more motion. 1 FAMC @F16@ 0 @I68@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /Hallinger/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 OCT 1861 1 DEAT 2 DATE 5 NOV 1861 1 FAMC @F16@ 0 @I69@ INDI 1 NAME William Potter /Hallinger/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 26 FEB 1864 1 DEAT 2 DATE 16 JAN 1885 1 FAMC @F16@ 0 @I70@ INDI 1 NAME Anna Mary /Hallinger/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 16 OCT 1866 2 PLAC Bridgeton,New Jersey 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 FEB 1927 2 PLAC New Zealand 1 NOTE Anna Mary was my maternal grandmother. April 5, 1893 she married my 2 CONT grandfather, Raymond Lee Warren. She died off the New Zealand coast 2 CONT onboard the Cunnard Liner Franconia, while on a round the world cruise, 2 CONT (not their first) on February 24, 1927. She died of breast cancer. She and 2 CONT my grandfather had also been on a world cruise in 1924. 1 NOTE I only vaguely remember Grandmother Warren. I was only five when she 2 CONT died. In my memory she was a very reserved and sort of distant person, 2 CONT as compared to her husband, my grandfather. Perhaps she was already 2 CONT suffering from the ravages of cancer and was in pain during that short 2 CONT period of her life that I can remember. 2 CONT I do recall going to the dock in New York City to welcome home my 2 CONT grandfather and I still can recall recall spotting him on the ship, drying 2 CONT his eyes with a white handkerchief. 1 NOTE One strange thing about their home on Maple Avenue, Merchantville, N.J. 2 CONT which I can remember is a piano against the staircase to the left of the 2 CONT livingroom on which there was a stuffed alligator, brown in color and 2 CONT surely not the 2 1/2-3 feet in length which I remember! 1 NOTE She is buried in the mausoleum in Harleigh Cemetary, Camden, N.J. She 2 CONT grew up on a farm in the mid 19th Century. The quality of her formal 2 CONT education is questionable. My mother learned alot while in college and 2 CONT had an entirely different lifestyle but retained many of the prejudices. 2 CONT She really was a product of the early 20th Century, the period of which I 2 CONT too am a product except that I am one generation more removed from the 2 CONT farm and I received an excellant education. While it may be close, I may 2 CONT make it into the 21st century. If I do, it will be over one hundred years 2 CONT after my mothers birth and nearly 150 years after my grandmothers 2 CONT birth. 1 FAMS @F17@ 1 FAMC @F16@ 0 @I71@ INDI 1 NAME Ida May /Hallinger/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F16@ 0 @I72@ INDI 1 NAME May Velma /Hallinger/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 6 OCT 1869 1 NOTE On december 10, 1890 she married Herbert Pearson Bailey. We took many trips together by 2 CONT automobile. He was more like a friend than a relative. He was a Shriner, a 2 CONT 32nd Degree Mason, a Moose. He gave me the keys to his Cadillac when I 2 CONT was eighteen, along with his gas credit cards. When he needed the car he 2 CONT asked me for it. I'm sure he spoiled me rotten, but I was his only male 2 CONT descendant. After my mother died I think he transferred all the love he 2 CONT had for her to me. His second wife died less than a year after my mother 2 CONT died and I am sure he was very lonely. He came to live with us and I 2 CONT really enjoyed his company. 1 NOTE He never finished grammar school but with his constant reading and 2 CONT travel he was well educated. he made a fortune by saving his lunch money 2 CONT and investing it in realestate. he had a stroke while I was in the service 2 CONT and he went to a retired businessmans home in North Jersey (Maywood). 2 CONT It was there he died. I visited him after leaving the service in late 1945. 2 CONT Then, he had a second stroke and his hair turned white and he didn't know 2 CONT who I was. he died October 18, 1946. He is buried in the mausoleum he 2 CONT built for his family in Harleigh Cemetary, Camden, N.J. 1 NOTE Until I, or another family member can visit the Warren cemetary Plot in 2 CONT Smyrna, Delaware to see if any additional information can be gained, I 2 CONT will remain uncertain as to his place of birth. He may have been born in 2 CONT Smyrna, or perhaps the family plot belonged to his grandparents and his 2 CONT own parents may have moved north. I don't know why I think he was born 2 CONT in Philadelphia, but I seem to recall that he would return to the farm in 2 CONT Delaware during the summer to work. He did tell me he had worked in a 2 CONT canning plant in Smyrna and he pointed it out to me. I was quite young 2 CONT and while I have some pictures I took in 1979 or 1980 of the building I 2 CONT think is the one he pointed out, I cannot be sure. 1 NOTE In retrospect, his life was rather sad. He worked very hard to gain a 2 CONT position of respect and affluence. he had less than a highschool 2 CONT education, yet he was well read and widely traveled. He lost his first 2 CONT wife of 34 years to a dibilitating disease, his only child, my mother 2 CONT seven years later. He married "Aunt" Carrie Sweetin a little over a year 2 CONT after his first wifes death, she died a little over a year following my 2 CONT mothers death. he married once more and lived in Ocean City, N.J. only to 2 CONT wake up one morning and find his wife dead in bed with him. That was 2 CONT such a short marriage that I cannot recall her name and do not know 2 CONT where she is buried. he returned to live with us at 309 E. Maple Ave., 2 CONT Merchantville, N.J. again. His last few years are covered above. 1 NOTE I do not know if he had any sisters, living or dead. I met both of his 2 CONT brothers but I do not know who was the eldest, who was youngest, etc. 2 CONT They all seemed about the same age to me. Harry A. I believe was called 2 CONT Captain and I think this was a rank he held at sea. Clyde was still on a 2 CONT farm when I met him. I believe the farm was in southeastern PA., but I 2 CONT am not certain of this. I know we visited some relative (female) on a 2 CONT farm in Maryland once. Her house still had kerosene lamps which 2 CONT fascinated me. The home itself was well furnished and neat, as I recall. I 2 CONT have no idea who she was or where in Maryland the farm was located, but 2 CONT I don't think it was very far from Smyrna, Delaware, because it seemed 2 CONT to me that we visited there on a side trip on one of our jaunts to Smyrna. 1 NOTE I need to find the Warren burial plot in Smyrna. I believe that the Odd 2 CONT Fellows Cemetary is the only one in Smyrna and the Warren Plot is not 2 CONT too far away from the Smith Plot. 1 FAMS @F17@ 0 @I77@ INDI 1 NAME Mildred Anna /Warren/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 NOV 1898 2 PLAC Camden,New Jersey 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 MAY 1934 2 PLAC Camden,New Jersey 1 FAMC @F17@ 0 @F1@ FAM 1 HUSB @I1@ 1 CHIL @I2@ 0 @F2@ FAM 1 HUSB @I2@ 1 WIFE @I3@ 1 CHIL @I4@ 0 @F3@ FAM 1 HUSB @I4@ 1 CHIL @I5@ 0 @F4@ FAM 1 HUSB @I5@ 1 CHIL @I6@ 0 @F5@ FAM 1 HUSB @I6@ 1 CHIL @I7@ 0 @F6@ FAM 1 HUSB @I7@ 1 WIFE @I8@ 1 CHIL @I9@ 0 @F7@ FAM 1 HUSB @I9@ 1 WIFE @I15@ 1 CHIL @I16@ 0 @F8@ FAM 1 HUSB @I9@ 1 WIFE @I14@ 0 @F9@ FAM 1 HUSB @I9@ 1 WIFE @I13@ 0 @F10@ FAM 1 HUSB @I16@ 1 WIFE @I17@ 1 CHIL @I18@ 1 CHIL @I19@ 1 CHIL @I20@ 1 CHIL @I21@ 1 CHIL @I22@ 1 CHIL @I23@ 1 CHIL @I24@ 1 CHIL @I25@ 1 CHIL @I26@ 0 @F11@ FAM 1 HUSB @I19@ 1 WIFE @I27@ 1 CHIL @I28@ 1 CHIL @I29@ 1 CHIL @I30@ 1 CHIL @I31@ 1 CHIL @I32@ 1 CHIL @I33@ 0 @F12@ FAM 1 HUSB @I33@ 1 WIFE @I34@ 1 CHIL @I35@ 1 CHIL @I36@ 1 CHIL @I37@ 1 CHIL @I38@ 1 CHIL @I39@ 1 CHIL @I40@ 1 CHIL @I41@ 0 @F13@ FAM 1 HUSB @I37@ 1 WIFE @I42@ 1 CHIL @I43@ 1 CHIL @I44@ 1 CHIL @I45@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 1750 0 @F14@ FAM 1 HUSB @I43@ 1 WIFE @I46@ 1 CHIL @I47@ 1 CHIL @I48@ 1 CHIL @I49@ 1 CHIL @I50@ 1 CHIL @I51@ 1 CHIL @I52@ 1 CHIL @I53@ 1 CHIL @I54@ 1 CHIL @I55@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 1781 2 PLAC Tuckahoe,New Jersey 0 @F15@ FAM 1 HUSB @I49@ 1 WIFE @I56@ 1 CHIL @I57@ 1 CHIL @I58@ 1 CHIL @I59@ 1 CHIL @I60@ 1 CHIL @I61@ 1 CHIL @I62@ 1 CHIL @I63@ 1 CHIL @I64@ 1 CHIL @I65@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 20 MAY 1814 0 @F16@ FAM 1 HUSB @I66@ 1 WIFE @I64@ 1 CHIL @I67@ 1 CHIL @I68@ 1 CHIL @I69@ 1 CHIL @I70@ 1 CHIL @I71@ 1 CHIL @I72@ 1 CHIL @I73@ 1 CHIL @I74@ 1 CHIL @I75@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 10 APR 1858 0 @F17@ FAM 1 HUSB @I76@ 1 WIFE @I70@ 1 CHIL @I77@ 0 TRLR
