He was one of the "actors" in throwing the tea 2 CONT into Boston Harbor. 2 CONT 2 CONT His shop was in Court Street, at the corner of Gore's Alley, now Brattle 2 CONT Street. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was also one of the party who took guns from the gun-house on West 2 CONT Street, and secreted them in the school house, when Major Paddock 2 CONT intended to turn them over to General Gage. 2 CONT 2 CONT OBITUARY: 2 CONT 2 CONT "In this city, on Wednesday, Samuel Gore Esq., aged 81. Mr. G. was one of 2 CONT the very small number of mechanics who obtained, secured, and sent out of 2 CONT the town of Boston, when it was in the hands of British power, at the 2 CONT commencement of the Revolution, the only two pieces of cannon then in the 2 CONT town, except those which may have been brought by the British troops. He 2 CONT was also one of the number (and, so far as we know, has left but three 2 CONT survivors) who on the 16th of December 1773 proceeded to the tea ships, 2 CONT (which were at the wharf now called Liverpool Wharf, then Griffin's) and 2 CONT destroyed their cargoes." -- Columbian Centinel, Saturday, November 26, 2 CONT 1831. 2 CONT 2 CONT From Compton's Encyclopedia: 2 CONT 2 CONT Tea and the "Tea Party" 2 CONT 2 CONT "In 1770, a new prime minister, Lord North, believing it unwise for 2 CONT England to hamper the sale of its own wares in outside markets, secured 2 CONT the repeal of most of the Townshend duties. At the request of King George 2 CONT III the duty on tea was retained, in order to assert the right of England 2 CONT to tax the colonies. The American merchants accepted this compromise, and 2 CONT the agitation in the colonies soon died down. The remaining duty was 2 CONT evaded by smuggling: the odious tax was not paid on about nine tenths of 2 CONT the tea imported after 1770. 2 CONT 2 CONT Then, in 1773, Parliament passed another act that set all the elements of 2 CONT discord in motion. This measure allowed the British East India Company to 2 CONT ship tea to the colonies without paying any of the import duties collected 2 CONT in England. The company, near the brink of bankruptcy, had on hand an 2 CONT immense quantity of unsold tea. It could now sell this tea more cheaply in 2 CONT the colonies than local merchants, who had to pay high duties, could sell 2 CONT the tea that they imported. The company was quite willing to pay the 2 CONT Townshend tax of threepence a pound when its tea was unloaded in America. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the colonies this cheap tea was greeted as a bribe offered to the 2 CONT people for their consent to a British tax. The merchants everywhere were 2 CONT alarmed. If the East India Company could receive a monopoly for the sale 2 CONT of one article, it might receive other privileges and thus deprive the 2 CONT local merchants of most of the colonial trade. In New York and 2 CONT Philadelphia the company's ships were not allowed to land. Meanwhile, in 2 CONT Boston, a group of citizens disguised as Indians tossed L15,000 worth of 2 CONT the offensive tea into the harbor. This incident, afterward known as the 2 CONT Boston Tea Party, brought about the greatest pre-Revolutionary War crisis, 2 CONT for it was the first act of resistance to end in the destruction of a 2 CONT large amount of private property. Since the East India Company was 2 CONT carrying out a British law, Lord North and George III felt that the 2 CONT colonial opposition must not go unchallenged." 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT "The first glass works in Boston were located in what is now Edinboro' 2 CONT Street, and were established in 1787. After many embarrassments the 2 CONT company began the manufacture of window glass in November, 1793. Samuel 2 CONT Gore was one of the originators of this enterprise. It proved a 2 CONT specualtion in which he lost all the accumulations of many years of 2 CONT untiring industry. He became a member of the Lodge of St. Andrew in 1778, 2 CONT and was the first treasurer of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic 2 CONT Association. He was considered a valuable and influential member of this 2 CONT association, but withdrew from it about the time of the failure of the 2 CONT glass company. He was a man of superior intelligence, kindness of heart, 2 CONT and courtesy of manner." -- from the history of the Ancient Artillery 2 CONT Company. 0 @I1231@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1752 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1232@ INDI 1 NAME Susanna /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1755 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1233@ INDI 1 NAME Rebecca /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1757 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1234@ INDI 1 NAME Christopher /GORE/ 1 SEX M 1 TITL Governor of Massachusetts 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 SEP 1758 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1 MAR 1827 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1235@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1759 1 DEAT 2 DATE BEF 1761 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1236@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1761 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1237@ INDI 1 NAME Catherine /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 BAPM 2 DATE 1762 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1238@ INDI 1 NAME Frances /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1239@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /GORE/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F464@ 0 @I1274@ INDI 1 NAME Deborah /BUTTERWICK/ 1 SEX F 0 @I1366@ INDI 1 NAME Whitsed William Herman Laming /SCHULTZ/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 OCT 1890 2 PLAC Milwaukee, WI 1 DEAT 2 DATE 25 JUN 1948 2 PLAC Roberts, WI 2 NOTE He died on the Northwestern "400" on a business trip. 1 BURI 2 DATE JUN 1948 2 PLAC Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, IL 1 NOTE Whit was a master salesman for several box companies in the Chicago area. 2 CONT Atlas Boxmakers was his last post.
