All information was corrected or confirmed by Raymond 2 CONT Warren Forrest, my father and myself, Leslie Forrest Harrison. 1 NOTE Although this is unconfirmed at this writing, the Manuscript that this is 2 CONT based on reports that the six brothers were descendants of John Forrest, 2 CONT Lord Mayor of Dublin. The text then goes on to describe the descendants 2 CONT of Charles Forrest and the Coat of Arms granted to this family. I believe, 2 CONT and it is not confirmed as of yet, that the William Forrest noted above 2 CONT could very well have been the seventh brother of the six who immigrated 2 CONT to America, hence, this unnamed Forrest male, father of the six brothers 2 CONT would have been John Forrest, Lord Mayor of Dublin. 1 FAMS @F1@ 0 @I2@ INDI 1 NAME Henry /Forrest/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1619 2 PLAC Pos' Dublin,Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1689 2 PLAC Gloucester,New Jersey 1 NOTE Henry Forrest entered America from Dublin, Ireland in the late 1600's. 2 CONT We believe that he was advanced in age as he died in 1689. There WAS a John Forrest in both Thortonbury and 2 CONT Westtown, but he was listed as "Free" which translates to "single and 2 CONT over 21' which we know John wasn't at the time. One 2 CONT of the James they found undoubtably is the brother to William, Matthew 2 CONT and John, however once they determined that one of the James Forrests 2 CONT was the son of William, they concentrated their efforts on researching 2 CONT him. In doing so I believe that they found the 'missing generation' that so 2 CONT plauged my father while researching this. We knew that an Andrew was 2 CONT married to Mary Happersett, and that they were the parents of Dads great 2 CONT grandfather James Forrest, father of Howard Parke Forrest. But Dad had 2 CONT assigned Andrew, the son of William as being the father of James as no 2 CONT other ancestors named Andrew were available, this created the missing 2 CONT generation. Once I received the following report from the Archives and 2 CONT saw that Williams son James had a son named Andrew, the problem was 2 CONT solved, however we still need proof that this Andrew was indeed married 2 CONT to Mary Happersett. 1 NOTE "James Forrest arrived in Marple Township in 1754-the same year as 2 CONT William and like William he was taxed as an inmate (married and 2 CONT landless). In 1756 James was taxed in Ridley and then disappeared from 2 CONT the records. These men 2 CONT were definitely not the same man who was taxed in Marple in 1754. 1 NOTE The James Forrest who was taxed in Ridley and later discounted was 2 CONT also taxed in Springfield as a freeman beginning in 1775. This is the 2 CONT same township where William was living and puts his (James') birth date 2 CONT at approximately 1754, because of the discount in Ridley. In 1784 James 2 CONT was living in Lower Darby when he purchased land in Uwchlan Township. 2 CONT In 1806 James and wife Hannah purchased the first of two tracts of land 2 CONT in Honeybrook and they sold the land in Uwchlan in 1813. The following facts lead me to believe he 2 CONT was the son of William. He first appeared in the township where William 2 CONT was living and in 1783 when James was living in Lower Darby he was 2 CONT also taxed for a piece of land in Ridley (where William was living at the 2 CONT time). If James was the son of William it explains the naming pattern of 2 CONT his children-he had a daughter Jane (named for his mother), a son 2 CONT William (named for his father), and a son Andrew (named for his brother). 1 NOTE That James of Honeybrook was the son of William seems the most 2 CONT plausible theory. We then commissioned 2 CONT the Chester County Archives to research the four brothers, William, 2 CONT Matthew, John and James. When I received the report concerning William 2 CONT and James, the researcher (Barbara Weis) had found a rather perfect 2 CONT resolution to our problem. She had found at least three James Forrests in 2 CONT Chester (see notes to James #35) in the time frame I had given her, but 2 CONT she was aware of our missing generation problem, and when she saw that 2 CONT Williams son James had a son Andrew who lived in Delaware County the 2 CONT time of James' death, (which we knew our Andrew did) it solved the 2 CONT problem. 2 CONT William had four sons by his second wife Jane, Henry, James, William 2 CONT and Andrew. From tax and Will records we have determined that Williams 2 CONT (#17) son James (#35) was the father this Andrew (#47), who married 2 CONT Mary Happersett and fathered James who fathered Howard Parke Forrest, 2 CONT my great grandfather. Certainly more research needs to be done on 2 CONT Andrew since we basically only know his name, who he married and that 2 CONT he fathered James, my great great grandfather. 1 NOTE 2/4/95 After receiving a new report from Suzanne Nurnberg, I now have 2 CONT a great deal of information on Andrew and his wife Mary Happersett. 2 CONT Although their wedding date is still unknown, it is safe to assume that 2 CONT since their eldest child, Agnes, was born in 1828 then Andrew and Mary 2 CONT were probably married in 1827. 1 NOTE On March 6, 1836, Andrew and wife sold property to a Samuel Wilson for 2 CONT the sum of $397 (dollars) and fourty and one half cents. 1 NOTE On March 23, 1836 Andrew and wife sold property to Andrews brother 2 CONT William. All of the other children were listed as 2 CONT 'help'. 1 NOTE In a Deed of Confirmation dated March 31, 1863, Elijah Bull and Jones 2 CONT Happersett are shown as Executors of the late Dr. Effinger Happersett. 2 CONT Several people are listed as those selling the property to others, which 2 CONT include; Mary Happersett, the late doctors widow, Andrew Forrest and 2 CONT wife, Jacob E. Morgan 113 acres and 2 CONT buildings for the sum of $8,820.90. 1 NOTE On March 27, 1868 Andrew and Mary purchased land from Daniel and 2 CONT Elizabeth Schafer. The indenture shows that Andrew and Mary were 2 CONT already residents of Wilmington. All previous deeds and indentures had 2 CONT shown Andrew and Mary as being lawful residents of the Township of 2 CONT Honeybrook, Chester County. This land consisted of a 'stoned brick 2 CONT dwelling house' and from the description which isn't very clear, several 2 CONT acres of land. 1 NOTE On June 3, 1868, Andrew and wife of Wilmington, DE. sold property 2 CONT located in the Township of Honeybrook, Chester County, PA. to a Robert 2 CONT HIll, who resided in Honeybrook at the time of this transaction. The sum 2 CONT was $172. 62 and 1/2 cents. I believe with this transaction Andrew and 2 CONT Mary had disposed of all their land in Chester County. 1 NOTE In the census of Subdivision No. 26 Wilmington, DE. 1870, the last census 2 CONT before Andrews death, Andrew is shown as being the owner of a boarding 2 CONT house, valued at $2,600, he is aged 69 years, Mary is aged 63, daughter 2 CONT Sarah E., aged 24, a man named William Binnix whos occupation I can not 2 CONT make out resided with them as well. Daughter Rachel, aged 34, a son who 2 CONT was born in Delaware whos name looks like Edwints, (probably Edward) 2 CONT aged 2, a daughter also born in Delaware, named Mary E., aged 9 months, 2 CONT (shown as having been born in the previous October), and a male 2 CONT Happersett Jr., first initial looks like T., aged 20 years, listed as a 2 CONT machinist. It seems very unlikely that Mary at the advanced age of 62 had 2 CONT another daughter (Mary E.) and another son (Edwints-Edward) at the age 2 CONT of 60-61. 1 NOTE Andrew died in Philadelphia on March 11, 1876. He appointed wife Mary 2 CONT and William B. Binnix as Executors, a burden Mary refused and turned over 2 CONT entirely to William Binnix. Gibson gave me his cousin Bill 2 CONT Happersetts phone and address in California. In a letter dated Jan.1, 1995 2 CONT Bill wrote to me. He explained Mary Happersett as being descended from 2 CONT Peter Happersett, who was originally Austrian, and of the Hapsburg 2 CONT Empire of Germany. Peter migrated to PA. about 1733 from Switzerland 2 CONT via Holland. He would not have been "Pennsylvania Dutch", as those were 2 CONT people from germany known as "Palatines", who were invited to migrate 2 CONT to and settle eastern Pennsylvania by William Penn. She is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetary in Smyrna, Delaware in 2 CONT the Smith family plot. Her mother and father, a maiden aunt, her brother 2 CONT Joseph and others are also buried there. 1 NOTE More research needs to be done to learn more of the Smiths. Grandmother 2 CONT Saida told me her father was a jeweler in Smyrna and that he was also a 2 CONT minister (denomination unknown). She told me a story about his being 2 CONT awakened late one night by a young couple who wished to get married. he 2 CONT was paid by coin which he took to be a quarter, pretty low compensation 2 CONT even in those days. With the light of day he discovered the coin to be 2 CONT gold, very adequate compensation indeed! 2 CONT She also told me about a brother who went west to fight Indians and was 2 CONT never heard from again. (Name unknown to me.) 1 NOTE She had a brother, Joseph V. Smith who was born in 1872 and died in 2 CONT 1951, and is buried next to her in Smyrna. He was a pharamacist in 2 CONT Germantown, PA. He married a Roman Catholic girl and they had one son, 2 CONT Daniel. I don't remember the wife but I do vaguely recall "Uncle" Joseph 2 CONT and Daniel. Daniel studied for a while for the priesthood but dropped out 2 CONT in spite of an excellant academics. He was teaching at Brown 2 CONT Preparatory while I was there. He died a few years later of a heart 2 CONT attack. I'm not aware of where he is buried, but it would have to be 2 CONT sanctified ground and is probably close to where his mother is buried, a 2 CONT location also unknown to me at this time. It is interesting to note that 2 CONT Joseph was the second child by the same name. The first, buried in the 2 CONT same cemetary, died July 26th, 1854 at the age of nine months and three 2 CONT days. The first Joseph was born when his mother was about 23 years old, 2 CONT the second was born when she was 41 years old. 1 NOTE A sister "Allie" (Almira Florence) was born November 22, 1859 and died 2 CONT April 19, 1891 at the age of 31. 1 NOTE Sister Estelle Smith Develin may have been born in 1882 and died in 2 CONT 1930. (I am reading the dates from a photograph taken of her tombstone. 2 CONT They are not very clear and need to be verified.) She was married to 2 CONT Charles Develin ("Uncle Charlie") who always reminded me of the movie 2 CONT actor Guy Kibbee. (There are probably few people alive who remember 2 CONT Guy.) They had three children that I know of, Ralph, Edward and Emily. 2 CONT Edward burned to death in 1951. (He was an alcoholic and set himself on 2 CONT fire while smoking in bed in some Philadelphia flop house.) I always 2 CONT liked him. 2 CONT I vaguely remember Ralph as having some sort of marital problems. He 2 CONT was married but I know no more. Emily married "Binks" whose last name 2 CONT I have lost. I remember her as being quite vivacious and with bright 2 CONT copper colored hair. That entire family was very artistic and, I believe, 2 CONT associated with the theater. 1 NOTE There were other children who died in infancy. James Ringgold. He died 2 CONT January 3, 1865 at the age of three years, one month and five days. Clara 2 CONT Cornelia died April 12, 1859 at the age of one year and fifteen days. 2 CONT Henrietta W. Smith was born May 10, 1864 and died January 5, 1884. 2 CONT Their tombstones and dates are also in the Smith Plot in Smyrna as is 2 CONT that of Laura C. Briscoe who was born March 3, 1837 and died May 28, 2 CONT 1880. I must assume that she was a maiden aunt of Henrietta W. Smiths. 1 NOTE On a trip to Smyrna about 1979, I stopped in at a barber shop in the 2 CONT center of town. I told the barbers that I was trying to locate where my 2 CONT Great grandfathers jewelry store had been. One of the barbers 2 CONT volunteered that he had heard that their shop had once been a jewelry 2 CONT store. 2 CONT When I asked about the location of another cemetary where my mothers 2 CONT fathers (Raymond Lee Warren) burial plot was located, they indicated 2 CONT that they were not aware of another cemetary. I now believe that the 2 CONT Warren Family Plot is also located in the Odd Fellows Cemetary. My father had to leave school 2 CONT and go to work in order to help support his mother, (he was an only 2 CONT child). This unfortunate situation impressed on him the absolute need for 2 CONT a good education. Eventually he convinced me of this same need. 2 CONT I believe that a friend of the family made it possible for him to go to 2 CONT work for the Victor Talking Machine Company in Camden, N.J. (later RCA). 2 CONT I do not know exactly what he did, but he did tell me that he had been a 2 CONT paymaster and carried cash in envelopes for other employees and wore 2 CONT side arms for protection from theft. 1 NOTE America entered World War I in 1917. At some point during our 2 CONT involvement he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He never got over seas, 2 CONT but he did serve in Norfolk, VA. and possibly Philadelphia, PA. The Marine 2 CONT Corps reenforced the strength of his character. he was always a very 2 CONT strong person morally and physically. He was the epitome of a macho 2 CONT man. Not very popular today, but it got him through some tough times in 2 CONT his life. 1 NOTE I believe that he lived in the Camden YMCA after the war. I don't know 2 CONT whether he returned to RCA or tried other sales work before he got into 2 CONT realestate. He did tell me that he had tried selling vacuum sweepers door 2 CONT to door. How well he did I do not know. 1 NOTE I cannot recall my father ever saying "I love you" to me, but there was no 2 CONT need for him to verbalize what he showed in every possible way. He was 2 CONT most fond of my sister Ann. She had his coloring and looked like him. My 2 CONT sister Mary Lee and I took after our mother, especially Mary Lee. He loved 2 CONT all of us, probably equally, but Ann was his favorite and I never had a 2 CONT problem with that. 1 NOTE When and how my father and my mothers father became the Realestate 2 CONT Co. of Warren & Forrest I have no knowledge. I think my parents marriage 2 CONT was brought about sooner than my father wished so that my Grandfather 2 CONT and Grandmother could go on a cruise without leaving an unattached 2 CONT daughter at home alone. They were married May 14, 1921, a year and a 2 CONT day before my birth. 1 NOTE The company survived the Great Depression by selling off properties they 2 CONT owned. A viable and wealthy company slowly disolved until 1939 or 1940 2 CONT when they made one last effort to build houses in Oaklyn, N.J. I think 2 CONT there was a falling out on philosophical grounds between them. My 2 CONT Grandfather wanted to build houses which lasted for generations from 2 CONT the best available materials. My father recognized that the cost would 2 CONT price them right out of a newly rejuvenated market. The potential 2 CONT homeowner couldn't see quality so the homes sold slowly. 1 NOTE My father left the company which existed now essentially in name only 2 CONT and went to work for the Federal Housing Administration. He progressed 2 CONT in terms of his career with some limitations because of his lack of 2 CONT formal education, and eventually he left FHA (after WWII) and went to 2 CONT work for the South Jersey Mortgage Co. as Vice President. Later 2 CONT following a heart attack which had not been his first but was the first 2 CONT he was aware of, he returned to the FHA. It was his intention to reduce 2 CONT his stress, but it made little difference. While on a two week meeting 2 CONT and seminar in Washington, D.C. in May of 1962, he suffered his third and 2 CONT final attack and died. 1 NOTE Mother died in 1934, Dad met and married Helen Mae Markward September 2 CONT 9, 1937. Her photograph album shows a very happy and 2 CONT active social life. She lived in Hubbard Hall, Smith College, second floor, 2 CONT room on the left as you face the building. 1 NOTE As I grew up she was active in the PTA and also whatever organization 2 CONT supported Cooper Hospital. She was a member of the DAR and enlisted me 2 CONT into an organization called Sons of Daughters of the American 2 CONT Revolution. She and my father were both early members of the 2 CONT Merchantville Country Club.
