1 NOTE !Died from side effects of diabetes when it was necessary to amputate her right
2 CONT leg above the knee at the Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS.  She inherited
2 CONT diabetes tendency from her mother, Eugenia Mangum.  A large number of the
2 CONT Mangums and later the Gates have died directly or indirectly from diabetes.

1 NOTE !Eugie lived in Mendenhall, MS, Simpson Co, the greater part of his life,
2 CONT other than a period of two or three years when he worked and lived in New
2 CONT Orleans, Louisiana, working on the MS River loading and unloading boats, under
2 CONT the supervision of Grady White, Aunt't Geneva Gates Donigan White's husband.
2 CONT Eugie built his home, with the help of Uncle Willie Gates, on Tarapin Creek,
2 CONT near the Poplar Springs Baptist Church and lived there all of his married
2 CONT life.  He worked as a Policeman in Mendenhall and later as a night guard and
2 CONT policeman at the Sanitorium until his retirement. He and Irene have no
2 CONT children.  He had been ill several years with an infection on his leg
2 CONT resulting from diabetes.  He died after having planted several tomatoes in his
2 CONT garden and had just sat down at the dinner table while Irene, his wife, was
2 CONT preparing his supper at approximately 6:30 PM. He was pronounced dead upon
2 CONT arrival at the Mendenhall Hospital.  Eugie was in state at the Upton-Mims
2 CONT Mitchell Funeral home on Friday evening and was visited by a large score of
2 CONT friends and relatives. His funeral services were held in the chapel at the
2 CONT funeral home before internment at the Mendenhall Cemetery. Eugie had earlier
2 CONT purchased and placed his headstone and that of his wife, Irene Dilmore.  There
2 CONT were many flowers at his burial sent my friends and relatives.  My sister,
2 CONT Billie Jean Drysdale, her husband Dee Drysdale of Sana Bernadino, CA,
2 CONT flew home for his funeral.

2 CONT Mendenhall:  Eugie Thomas Palmer, 82, a retired security guard, died of heart
2 CONT failure Wednesday at Simpson General Hospital.  Services are 11 a.am. today at
2 CONT Upton Funeral Home with burial in Mendenhall Cemetery.
1 NOTE   Mr. Palmer was a mendenhall native.  He was a securitgy guard at Boswell
2 CONT Retgardation Center and had been a mendenhall police officer.  He was a member
2 CONT of Mendenhall First Baptist Church.
2 CONT   Mr. Palmer was widely known for his ability at growing vegetables.
2 CONT   "He was really famous for his greens," said nephew Mike Dilmore of
2 CONT Mendenhall.  "He sold them byh the bunch so I would you could say when people
2 CONT bought them, they bought a bunch."
2 CONT    Besides his vegetables business, Mr. Palmer sold used farming equiopment,
2 CONT Dilmore said.
2 CONT    "He collected odds and ends, fixed up up and resold them," he said.
2 CONT "Everybody knew abouit his trading shop.  He loved trading."
2 CONT    "Dilmore said Mr. Palmer particularly enjoyed bargaining with people."
2 CONT    "He loved to get over on people," he said.  "If he couldn't get over on a
2 CONT man, he'd give him somelthing anyway.  He always told people that they weren't
2 CONT going to leave his shop empty handed."
2 CONT    "Al Benton of Brandon, who grew up on a farm next to the Palmers' farm in
2 CONT Mendenhall, said Mr. Palmer was a hard-working, industustrious person who was
2 CONT well-liked by everyone."
2 CONT    "But as a child, Mr. Palmer was good at getting out of chores," Benton said.
2 CONT     "My dad was real good at never running out of things for us to do," Benton
2 CONT said. "Eugie was real good at talking his dad into letting him go out and do
2 CONT things.  He and his brotgher used to alwlays come by on their way to the
2 CONT swimming hole while we were working and carry on and laugh at us."
2 CONT    "Other survivors include wife Irene; brotgher, John T. Palmer of Santa Rosa,
2 CONT Calif; and sisters Ruby Lee Murphy of Clifton Forge, VA, and Billie Drysdale of
2 CONT San Bernadino, Calif.

1 NOTE !Eugene entered the CCC Camp as a young man and remained there for about two or
2 CONT three years.  There he learned to cook, a skill that he used all of his life.
2 CONT Following his stint of service with CCC, where he was stationed at Meadville,
2 CONT MS, he moved to New Orleans, LA, and worked his way up in restaurant cooking to
2 CONT become a chef at several of the finest restaurants in New Orleans.  His first
2 CONT job was at ButterKrisp on ST. Charles Street, near the area where many of our
2 CONT relatives lived.  Uncle Kelley Gates, Uncle Dewey Gates, Aunt Ona Gates Wells,
2 CONT Aunt Geneva Gates White, Uncle Jimmy Gates, all had moved to New Orleans.
2 CONT Eugene boarded with Aunt Ona and Uncle Chester Wells when he first moved there.
2 CONT Later when he married in 1934, he took his bride, Inez Overby, to New
2 CONT Orleans and they lived there all his married life.  Some of the restaurants
2 CONT where he worked included first ButterKrisp, then the New Orleans Athletic Club,
2 CONT then in his own restaurant just off Canal Street, the Court of Two Sisters,
2 CONT among others, and finally at the restaurant associated with Maison Blanche in
2 CONT the Gentilly area where he retired.
1 NOTE !He purchased his home in the Gentily area and lived there until his death
1 NOTE of a massive heart attack.  He was in the process of getting adjusted to
2 CONT insulin for diabetes and was a smoker.  These two factors, in my judgment,
2 CONT caused the heart attack.
2 CONT He had one daughter, Gloria Jean Revier, who lives in Slidell, LA, with
2 CONT his husband, Gary.  He has two grandchildren only: Gina and Tiki.  He is buried
2 CONT with Inez at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Mendenhall, MS.
1 NOTE !Eugene was always very popular with his friends.  He was a great talker
2 CONT and had a very winsome personality.  My mother claims he was "Ugly in the
2 CONT cradle; pretty in the saddle," meaning that he was an unattractive baby, that
2 CONT grew to be quite handsome as a young man.  (See my family history for pictures
2 CONT of Eugene as a young man, as a chef, and as a later adult.)

2 CONT For a few years after her marriage to Vance she lived at 1131 Beacon Street,
2 CONT San Pedro, CA, and later in Bremerton, Washington.  Following Vance's discharge
2 CONT from the navy after a six or seven year period, she resided first on the Cato
2 CONT Road, and later on Highway 49 in D'Lo.  She worked for many years at the
2 CONT Colonial Bakery in Jackson and later at the electronic plant on Highway 49 near
2 CONT the Sanitorium and Magee.  She retired from her work there, and has continued
2 CONT to live in her home in D'Lo, MS, until the time of her death.

1 NOTE !Following graduation from high school, Ruby attended Soule Business College in
2 CONT New Orleans.  During her employment there during World War II, she met her
2 CONT husband, John R. Pat Murphy, a sailor.  They were married in New Orleans and
2 CONT moved to Clifton Forge, Virginia, Pat's hometown, following his discharge.  For
2 CONT four years subsequently they resided at Mississippi Southern College while Pat
2 CONT was completing his degree in Business and Accounting.  After his graduation,
2 CONT they moved to the Washington, D.C. where Pat was employed by the Bureau of
2 CONT Internal as a Special Agent.  Ruby was the first Deputy US Marshall in the US.
2 CONT She worked out of Alexandria, VA, where they lived for many years.  Following
2 CONT Pat's early retirement for health reaons, they moved back to Clifton Forge,
2 CONT Virginia and Ruby commuted to Roanoake and worked in the Social Security offic
2 CONT for several years until her retirement.  They continue to live in Clifton Forge
2 CONT during their years of retirement.  They are currently operating an Antique shop
2 CONT in Clifton Forge, VA.

2 CONT where Dick was in the Marine Corps.  Following his discharge, they continued to
2 CONT live in Southern California.  Following her divorce from Dick, she married Bob
2 CONT Phillips of 29 Palms, CA, and lived there for a number of years.  After their
2 CONT separation and divorce, she married Joe Jolly and lived in San Bernadino for
2 CONT many years.  Her final marriage was to Dee Drysdale and is currently residing
2 CONT in San Bernadino, CA.

1 NOTE !Henry Lee Mangum, son of Arthur and Penelope Butler Mangum, was one
2 CONT of the two first Mangums to come from South Carolina to MS ca 1819.  Arthur and
2 CONT his brother Joseph Edwards migrated to Mississippi, perhaps first to Pike
2 CONT or Marion County, beforer settling in Simpson.  Family tradition is that
2 CONT Arthur and his brother in law Philip Magee, who had also married a Butler,
2 CONT dau of John Butler, migrated together with the two families in wagons from
2 CONT SC.  Henry m  in 1834.
1 NOTE !In 1860 Census of Simpson Co, MS, Henry Lewis Mangum and family were living
2 CONT in the Old Hickory Community of Simpson Co, MS, entry 579, p. 86.  Entry
2 CONT indicates that Henry L., age 44, was born in SC.  Nancy, age 43, b in MS.
1 NOTE !Mr. A.B. Thompson of Bastrop, LA, feels that Henry's middle name is Lee.  She

2 CONT first son, Robert Giles Parker.  She and Joe Parker lived in a small home
2 CONT adjacent to my parents at the time of her death.  I recall that my mother was
2 CONT with her at the time of Robert's birth.  She died from uremic poisining only a
2 CONT few days after the birth of her son.  My father was heart-broken over the
2 CONT untimely death of one of his favorite nieces.

1 NOTE !Source: Personal knowledge.  As a child I visited my Grandmother Eugenia
2 CONT Mangum Gates often with my family.  My one vivid memory of her is still in some
2 CONT detail.  On that visit she gave me a red pullet (chicken) that I named
2 CONT "Deemie."  Deemie was a favorite and a pet, and I would often sit by her nest
2 CONT while she was "setting" or on the next to lay an egg.  As I recall, she was
2 CONT what I would describe as a "Rhode Island Red."  She raised many broods of
2 CONT young chicks before Dr. Giles' automobile ran over "Deemie" in front of our
2 CONT home as he came to visit us. (We were living on his farm we termed the "Dr
2 CONT Giles Place," near Poplar Springs Baptist Church.  I wept profusely when I
2 CONT discovered that he had killed my dear pet "Deemie."  He brought me a
2 CONT replacement that never ever replaced Deemie.  I always disliked him afer that
2 CONT for killing my favorite pet.
1 NOTE !My grandmother soon died from complications from diabetes.  She had lost a
2 CONT finger on one hand from an infection that would never heal.  All of her
2 CONT children with the exception of Uncle Willie Gates inherited diabetes from her
2 CONT and all died fairly early from complications of this deadly disease.  She was
2 CONT the first person in our community that used a small kerosene lamp to test the
2 CONT sugar in her urine.  She is buried at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, no more
2 CONT than 3/4 of a mile where we lived when Deemie was killed.

1 NOTE !Uncle Willie Gates was one of a kind.  He had lots of personality, loved to
2 CONT talk, was a good handy-man who built his own home following his late marriage
2 CONT to Hazel _____, who he had met in New Orleans during World War II.  He lived
2 CONT for many years, following the death of his mother, with his Uncle Arder Mangum.
2 CONT He was a part of their family for many years.  I recall his serving in the CCC
2 CONT Camp at Mendenhall where his job was sharpening saws.  We would often visit
2 CONT with him as we would go to Mendenhall.  I can still envision him sitting down
2 CONT on the ground under a shade tree sharpening saws that the CCC men would use.
1 NOTE !Every body liked Willie Gates; he had many friends.  I recall that he once
2 CONT told me our family was Scotch-Irish, and I now believe both the Mangum and
2 CONT Gates lines were probably Irish or Scotch-Irish.  He had reddish brown hair and
2 CONT always whistled as he worked in his fields.  I recall my mother and I stopping
2 CONT by his farm where he was plowing in the field on a trip from New Orleans.  I
2 CONT gave him a drink of wine from a gallon jug we had bought, and he later said he
2 CONT worked and whistled all afternoon.
1 NOTE !He built a nice country home that is today still standing.  I am always
2 CONT saddened when I drive by and remember my Uncle Willie.  He and Hazel had no
2 CONT children.

2 CONT Telegram Company during his latter years, lost both legs from diabetes before
2 CONT his death.  He was a nervous type, always moving around, and enjoyed delivering
2 CONT telegrams in New Orleans.  I recall visiting his family many times, enjoying
2 CONT the company of his step-son Edwin Anderson.  He married in New Orleans, died
2 CONT there, but is buried at Poplar Springs.  He encouraged his brothers and
2 CONT sisters to move to New Orleans.  At one time Aunt Ona, Aunt Geneva, Uncle
2 CONT Dewey, Uncle Jimmy, and Uncle Willie Gates were all in New Orleans.  Later my
2 CONT two brothers Eugie and Eugene followed and lived there.  Our family visited
2 CONT them often and always enjoyed cajun food.

1 NOTE !Aunt Ona Gates Wells was my favorite aunt, and I visited her home often. Her
2 CONT son C.W. and I were about the same age, and always enjoyed each other. She had
2 CONT dark red hair and, of course, was diabetic like the rest of the Gates children.
2 CONT She worked in restaurants with her husband who owned several during their life
2 CONT time.  I recall she gave me my first drink of gin and seven-up, right after I
2 CONT had graduated from high school and had gone to New Orleans to work for the
2 CONT summer before going to college.  I was at her house when she awakened me to
2 CONT tell me that I had been called to go to work at the Toddle House where I did my
2 CONT first day of "public work," washing dishes and cleaning off the counter.  She
2 CONT and Uncle Chester visited my mother and father often, and moved back and forth
2 CONT from New Orleans to Mendenhall, MS, several times.  They could never make a go
2 CONT of farming and living in the country.  Just before she died, she and Uncle
2 CONT Chester moved to Chicago where she died from a heart-attack.  She was a
2 CONT wonderful, loving, caring woman who loved her family, and we always felt
2 CONT welcome visiting her for many days or even weeks.  At one time Uncle Chester
2 CONT accepted a job as the chef at the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Jackson, MS, and they
2 CONT rented a farm near Tougaloo, MS.  I spent much of the summer there with C.W.
2 CONT Aunt Ona was like a second mother to me.  I still miss her, these many years
2 CONT later.

1 NOTE !Uncle Jimmy Gates was the baby boy in the Gates family.  Following the death
2 CONT of his mother, he lived with my parents for several years before moving on to
2 CONT New Orleans to be with his other brothers and sisters.  His nickname was
2 CONT "Bottle."  He was always a chubby, somewhat overweight boy, quiet, and
2 CONT reserved.  I recall helping him write letters to a girl friend in Morgantown,
2 CONT VA (or WVA?).  He later married the step-daughter of his brother Dewey gates.
2 CONT Did that make him the step-uncle of his wife, and she his step-niece!
2 CONT He lived in New Orleans many years.  I recall my brother Eugene and I visited
2 CONT him in Bay St. Louis, MS, following a stroke he had experienced.  I never saw
2 CONT him after that.  I remember him well and some of the tricks he taught me.

2 CONT New Orleans. She worked as a waitress at the Union Train Station off St.
2 CONT Charles Street for many years. She married Joe Donigan in New Orleans and had
2 CONT one son, Joseph (Junior).  She was divorced from him.  He was jealously
2 CONT insance, we were told.  He would tie her hair to the bed at night to keep her
2 CONT from "slipping out and meeting other men."  No one was more faithful than she,
2 CONT and she had to leave him for fear of her life.  I recall she took him to the
2 CONT Veterans Hospital in Little Rock where she discovered from his physician that
2 CONT he had had this peculiar problem before with other women.  She purchased a
2 CONT duplex apartment in East New Orleans and lived there until her death.  She died
2 CONT from diabetes.

2 CONT Mavis died from a fire caused by a cigarette.  Joe was seldom seen by any
2 CONT of the relatives after this.  He did return to New Orleans following the
2 CONT death of his mother.  She died not knowing where her only son was.  Joe's
2 CONT whereabout is unknown to any of his relatives today.

2 CONT mae's second marriage.  She and Sidney had beena divorced for some time when
2 CONT Vera Mae remarried.

2 CONT after my mother, Mary Jane Gates, that Uncle Dewey and Aunt Ruth raised. I

1 NOTE !Jackie Ratcliffe of the Historical & Genealogical Assoc of MS, wrote in the
2 CONT history of Rankin Co, MS, p 227, "My great-great grandfather, James May ....came
2 CONT to MS with other members of his family by way of Wilkes Co, GA, arriving in
2 CONT Amite Co, MS, in 1805.  There on the 17 of Jan, 1811, he married Nancy Tullos,
2 CONT daughter of Willoughby and Anna Mills Tullos.  By 1816 they have moved to Pike
2 CONT Co, MS where they remained until sometime between 1830-1832.  He does not
2 CONT appear on the tax rolls of Pike Co for 1830 or 1831 and appears in 1832 in
2 CONT Simpson Co, MS, with one slave.  It is assumed that when the third Choctaw
2 CONT Cession ceded by the Choctaws in the Treaty of Dancing Creek in 1830 opened
2 CONT up new lands for settlers that James, in search of new and more fertile land,
2 CONT moved to Fayette Hills, sixteen miles north east of Westville, Simpson Co,
2 CONT MS where they lived, farmed and raised their children.  The records of Simpson
2 CONT County were destroyed by two fires, one in 1844 and another in 1872.  It is
2 CONT learned through an estate notice published in the Jackson "Mississippian" that
2 CONT James died previous to August 1834.  After his death Nancy maintained the
2 CONT farm and household.  She is shown on the 1836 tax list with four slaves and a
2 CONT value of preoperty at $200.  By 1837 she had five slaves.  In 1850, she is
2 CONT shown having fifty acres of land under cudltivation, thirty acres uncultivated,
2 CONT with a value of $400, tools valued at $100, three horsesw, a mule, twelve
2 CONT cows, four oxen, four sheep, twenty-five swine, twelve other cattle, 400
2 CONT bushels of corn and five bales of cotton.  By 1860 she had thirty acres of
2 CONT improved land, fifty uncultivated with a value of $500, three horses, three
2 CONT cows, twenty-five swine valued at $460 and one hundred bushels of Corn.
2 CONT Nancy died sometime between 1860 and 1870.  It is assumed that she and James
2 CONT are buried on their farm in a field with no markers.  They had ten children.

2 CONT He married lst on the 7th of Feb 1839, Rankin Co, MS, to Nancy Elizazbeth
2 CONT Ross, daughter of David Ross of North Carolina.  She was born on the 10th
2 CONT of August 1817, in NC and died of a lung hemmorrhage on 12 Apr 1861.  She is
2 CONT buried in the Mendenhall Cemetery in Simpson Co, MS.  By her he had nine
2 CONT children.  He married 2nd: Mesanarie Jane Howell, daughter of Lewis Howell.
2 CONT They had no children.  She is buried in the Old Gum Springs Baptist Church
2 CONT Cemetery, Simpson Co, MS.
1 NOTE The "This and That" column of the Simpson County News, dated 19 Nov 1989,
2 CONT carries a long story on Judge May.  It notes "George William May located on
2 CONT Settlers Creek near the present town of Mendenhall in 1839.  He acquired a
2 CONT large tract of land from the United States Government on both sides of the
2 CONT creek and opened up a large farm.  He owned aa number of slaves and about the
2 CONT year 1849 he built a water mill on the creek a short distance west of the mouth
2 CONT of Terrapin Creek.  He ground corn, bolted wheat, operated a gin and a sawmill.
2 CONT  His mill was a very popular gathering place and he had many customers.
1 NOTE "Some distance above the mouth of Terrapin Creek, Willoughby May, a younger
2 CONT brother of Judge May owned and operated a still which was very liberally
2 CONT patronized.  Many farmers contracted to have their whiskey made and would bring
2 CONT parched corn to the mill to be ground.  It would be carried to the still and
2 CONT left to be made into whiskey.  Parched corn was much better for making whiskey
2 CONT than unparched corn as it could be changed into mash much sooner and was
2 CONT declared to make a better grade of whiskey.  A bushel of parched corn usually
2 CONT made about a barrel of mash and a barrel of mash was supposed to make from
2 CONT eight to ten gallons of whiskey.
1 NOTE "Judge May was a quiet unassuming man of splendid intellect and had a gift for
2 CONT dealing with rough cract ers that came to his mill.  He settled many
2 CONT difficulties and prevented manuy fights.  He was first elected Probate Judge in
2 CONT 1855 and after serving six years, declined to be a candidate again.  After his
2 CONT slaves were set free, he sold his farm on Settlers Creek and moved to the west
2 CONT side of Strong River where he owned a large tract of land.  He was a man of
2 CONT distingished appearance and the county never produced a more knightly
2 CONT gentlmen."  Written by Bee King and first published in the Simpson County News
2 CONT on April 19, 1945.

2 CONT "Soon aftger the Civil War, Judge May built a water mill on Seller's creek in
2 CONT the southeast part of what is now Mendenhall.  It stood about where the
2 CONT bridge that crosses Seller;s creek, now stands, on the road from Highway 49 out
2 CONT by Haynes Place.  About ther same time Willoughby May begain the operation of a
2 CONT still on Terrapin creek about one half mile from the water mill.  Both the mill
2 CONT and the still were patronized."  The story goes on to note that Mr. Womack
2 CONT purchased the mill from Judge May and narrates a story involving Caleb Birch
2 CONT who came to the mill in company with a negro and bought a sack of corn.  He
2 CONT also carried with him a small brown jug duspended from his shoulder by a long
2 CONT leather strap.  Soon aftger Birch reached the mill he left for the still. He
2 CONT returned one hour later pretty well "lit up." He fell into the pond and had
2 CONT to be rescued by two of the Womack boys.  The story continues and notes that
2 CONT Birch returned home wet and told his wife that a big fish caught him by the
2 CONT beard and pulled him by the beard up on top of the creek bank.  When she
2 CONT continued to quiz him, he walked away muttering, "Some women don't know a good
2 CONT husband when they see one."
1 NOTE !The "May Family Genealogy," p 12 notes that Judge May lived on the Strong
2 CONT River near Rocky Ford, 7 miles northwest of Westville. He has a large headstone
2 CONT in the Mendenhall Cemetery. with birth and death date.

2 CONT an orphanage.  One lives in Memphis, TN, the other in Modesto, CA.  Ann and I
2 CONT recently visited the one in Modesto.

2 CONT death of her parents.  As a young adult she came to live with my family, and I
2 CONT remember her well.  She lived with us for several years at the Willie Palmer
2 CONT place, as it was called, down the road a mile or so from Monroe Boleware's
2 CONT farm.  I recall that she had diabetes then which was later responsible for her
2 CONT death.  She married, had one son who died young of diabetes and is buried at
2 CONT Puckett Cemetery, I believe.  She was like a sister to me.

2 CONT of swamp fever at his home in Rankin Co, Oct 11, 1888.  A.F. May, age 38 years,
2 CONT seven months, eight days.  He  was born in Simpson County near Westville, moved
2 CONT with his father after the war to Rankin Co where he grew to manhood.  He made a
2 CONT profession of religion at the age of 16 years and was baptized by J.M. Lewis,
2 CONT D.D. into the fellowship of Dry Creek baptist Church where he lived a constant
2 CONT Christian until his death.  lHe was married oct 8, 1873 to Miss Rosa Ann Steen
2 CONT with whom he lived in devotion and prosperity.  He leaves a grief striken wife,
2 CONT eight children, two brothers, two sisters with a host of friends to mourn his
2 CONT loss.  He was a very pious man in his deportment.  As a father and husband he
2 CONT was kind and affectionate.  I think he loved his family as much as any man I
2 CONT ever knew.  He was a good neighbor, kind and obliging, alwlays mindful of
2 CONT neighbors in the highest degree.  It is said of him that he was never heard to
2 CONT speak unkindly of anyone.  He had a peculiar love for their rights, but always
2 CONT had an apology to render for those that did wrong.  He was a strong believer in
2 CONT the promises of God and ther religion that he professed did not desert him in
2 CONT the hour of his death.  He was conscious of his situation and met death without
2 CONT a fear.  His good wifge and children have lost a kind and doting husband and
2 CONT father, the Church one of its best members, the county one of the best

2 CONT letters written by a daughtger of Burrell Tullos and by a descendant Thomas
2 CONT Tullos. These letters state that Archibald, Burtrell, Roland, and Thomas Tullos
2 CONT were brothers. Thomas Tullos came to MS with Willoughby, and I assume that he
2 CONT was a son of Willoughby.
