Edward Babcock's "Defence of 2 CONT London". He remained in the vicinity of Boston until 1638 when, with the Rev. 2 CONT Thomas Hooker and his friends, he removed to Hartford, CT. This association 2 CONT with the famous Puritan theologian, the Rev. Thomas Hooker and his flock, is 2 CONT especially interesting. The Pecks may have already come under the influence of 2 CONT Rev. Hooker in the old country, for the distinguished leader's early 2 CONT evangelistic efforts in behalf of the Puritan cause had centered in Essex 2 CONT whence in 1630 he had been forced to flee to Holland in order to escape the 2 CONT suppressive measures of Archbishop Laud and the Court of High Commission. In 2 CONT 1633, he migrated to the three-year-old Massachusetts Bay colony, becoming 2 CONT pastor at New Town, now Cambridge, where some of his friends had already 2 CONT settled the year before. Apparently, other associated families joined them 2 CONT from the old country. #By 1635, the liberty-seeking Rev. Hooker, finding himself 2 CONT having to face new tyrannies under the strict Puritan regime of Massachusetts 2 CONT Bay, migrated south with his flock into what was to become Connecticut, and 2 CONT there founded the town of Hartford. #Paul Peck joined them in 1638 and is 2 CONT listed among the proprietors of Hartford in 1639. From records, he appears to 2 CONT have been a leading citizen. His residence was on Washington St., not far from 2 CONT Trinity College, the site remembered for many years as the "Peck" lot. He was 2 CONT a deacon of the Congregational Church in Hartford from 1681 till his decease in 2 CONT 1695. His lengthy will dated June 25, 1695, (Probate Records, B5, 217-219) 2 CONT shows an estate inventory amounting to 536 pounds, 5 schillings." Ira B. Paul Peck's will, dated 25 June 1695, named 2 CONT him to have been a decade younger, since he testified in 1683 aged about 60, 2 CONT wife Martha to have #7.100 paid to her annually by " my sons"; John Shepherd, 2 CONT exec. Widow Martha Peck of Hartford brought several suits: one against Paul 2 CONT Peck of Hartford...for refusing to pay rent of land due her by the will of her 2 CONT deceased husband.
