This would seem 2 CONT to be in conflict with the 10 Apr 1768 date stated as the date of his Baptism in 2 CONT the Ryton Parish records, refered to above. However, note that his death notice 2 CONT in the New York Post states that he came to this country in 1798. If Torrey had 2 CONT it right that Chilton came to america at age 30 then there would seem to be 2 CONT no conflict,one could easily assume that torrey simply had the year of entry 2 CONT into this country wrong. BUT, Chilton's death notice in the Post and the record 2 CONT of his death in the libers death record refered to above, both state that he 2 CONT was 69 at the time of his death on 5 Nov 1836. This would make his year of 2 CONT birth 1767. November, 1691, 2 CONT "Esther Nichols, who was the daughter of William Ward." 2 CONT Again, Ephraim Nichols, of Stratford, married with Esther Hawley, of 2 CONT Fairfield, on ye 7th day of October, 1682. 2 CONT At Fairfield it is also recorded, under date of April 19, 1678, a marriage 2 CONT covenant between Ebenezer Hawley, son of Joseph, of Stratford< and "Hester 2 CONT Ward, daughter unto Mrs. Deborah Ward Tappin, of South Hampton." It 2 CONT was their evident desire that the property should remain in the family, in the 2 CONT possession of the eldest heir in the male line. On the death of the third Henry 2 CONT [this record], without male issue surviving, it naturally reverted to the heirs 2 CONT of his two daughters, Mrs. Allyn [Elizabeth Woolcott] and Mrs. Chauncey [Sarah 2 CONT Wolcott]. Their claim was contested by the heirs in the male line. The suit was 2 CONT regarded with much interest in the Colony, as it was supposed to involve the 2 CONT question whether the English law of primogeniture and entail should be 2 CONT recognized in this country. The claim of the Wolcotts was disallowed, and the 2 CONT property was divided between the Allyns and the Chauncys. The decision caused 2 CONT some unpleasent feeling in the family; and Benjamin, the son of John Wolcott, 2 CONT proceeded to England and took personal possession of the property, which caused 2 CONT difficulty there. The demands of the Wolcotts, whether legal or not, were 2 CONT subsequently purchased by Colonel Allyn. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1651. 2 CONT After his graduation he studied both Medicine and theology with his father. I 2 CONT have seen it stated that he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He went 2 CONT to England both as phisician and minister. 2 CONT He became a clergyman beneficed in Woodborough in Wiltshire. He was 2 CONT ejected from his living in the church of England by the Act of Uniformity in 2 CONT 1662. He afterwards was for sometime minister of a Congregational church in 2 CONT Andover. He then went to London as a practising physician. Upon the death of 2 CONT the distinguished divine and scholar, David Clarkson, who suceeded the 2 CONT celebrated John Owen, he was appointed his successor in Byry-street CHAPEL, 2 CONT London. After acting as pastor fourteen years, "finding his congregation 2 CONT dwindling", he resigned his office . He was succeeded by Dr. Watts, who acted 2 CONT as his colleague for a year or two previous to his resignation. He then 2 CONT returned to the practice of medicine; but was afterwards appointed tutor in a 2 CONT dissenting acadamy, subsequently conducted by Dr. Ridgley. He died Feb. 28, 2 CONT 1712. 2 CONT Dr. Calamy classes him among the ejected ministers who suffered from the 2 CONT oppressive acts of Parliment in the reign of Charles II., and says of him, 2 CONT that "he wqas afterwards well known in London", and that he was a "zealous 2 CONT writer against Neoantinomianism". It is remarked of him by Dr. Charles Chauncey 2 CONT of Boston, his grandson, that he was "too rigidly orthodox, and too zealous in 2 CONT defence of his priniples on this head". 2 CONT The present writer, when in London, was informed upon what he deemed good 2 CONT authority, that the church in which Owen, and Clarkson, and Chauncey, and 2 CONT Watts officiated has now no seperate existence, but has been scattered to other 2 CONT churches. Even the edifice in which it worshipped is used for merchantile 2 CONT purposes.
