Hutker: 2 CONT 2 CONT (A) A Personal History, by Everett G. Hutker, written March 16, 1994: 2 CONT 2 CONT My grandfather, Bernard Hutker, who died before I was born, came to the 2 CONT United States from Germany with his father at the age of 14. They came to 2 CONT Allen County Indiana where he bought 1/2 of a section of land in Milan 2 CONT Township. It is bordered on the north by the Doty Road, west by the 2 CONT Thimler Road, and on the south by the Maumee River. It was later broken 2 CONT up. He kept the northwest 1/4 of the section (80) acres) and it is still 2 CONT in the family. This is where my sister Garnet Gerig lives and her son Tom 2 CONT owns some of it directly behind his mother. The balance of the land was 2 CONT sold to Rey on the north and to Ora Yerks on the South. According to 2 CONT records, Grandfather was the Street Commissioner in Fort Wayne at one 2 CONT time. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was born in a log cabin in 1908 on this land. I was the fifth child of 2 CONT eight. My dad built a new house in front of the log cabin in 1917. I was 2 CONT nine years old and can remember putting lath on the insides and sheeting 2 CONT and shingles on the roof. I enjoyed being on the roof. I have lots of 2 CONT good memories of my childhood. I had a rat terrier dog who I trained to 2 CONT sit up and do tricks for me. There is a picture of this dog. 2 CONT 2 CONT Uncle Jim Nettle always took me fishing. As I remember, I was 4 or 5 2 CONT years old and it was his birthday and I wanted to give him a gift. My dad 2 CONT gave me $.25 and I bought the best pocket knife they had for just that 2 CONT much. We were putting out a trout line and as he cut short pieces of line 2 CONT to tie on and throw into the river he would put the knife into his pocket. 2 CONT Only one time he put the string into his pocket and threw the knife in 2 CONT the river instead! My dad never let him forget it. 2 CONT 2 CONT I have always been interested in the path of the Hutker name through the 2 CONT sons. Grandfather Bernard had two wives. His second wife had two 2 CONT daughters, Aunt Mary and Aunt Kate, and one son, my father Henry. Of 2 CONT Henry's eight children four were boys to carry the name: Glenn had no 2 CONT children, Harman has two daughters, D.O. was killed in an auto accident in 2 CONT 1939 at age 18, and I have four sons. From our four sons, we have 5 2 CONT grandsons and 4 great grandsons that carry the Hutker name. 2 CONT 2 CONT The grass grew higher in the middle of the road, so after school my 2 CONT sisters Garnet, Berdine and I would take the cows to the road to eat the 2 CONT grass there and we had to stay with them to make sure they didn't go 2 CONT astray. On Saturdays I cleaned out the horse stall and cow stables and 2 CONT the pig stalls. 2 CONT 2 CONT I went to Harlan High School. My first year I was chosen to be on the 2 CONT first basketball team. So to get into shape I jogged the four miles to 2 CONT and from school. There was no school gym. We played in the Harlan 2 CONT Masonic Hall. In Churubusco the basketball court was on a stage that was 2 CONT no bigger than our living room on Cleveland Street. My dad would not 2 CONT allow me to take the car to the New Haven games because every time someone 2 CONT stole the spare tire, hood ornament or something else. I really didn't 2 CONT think the ball players did this, but I had to ride the bus to New Haven my 2 CONT final year. 2 CONT 2 CONT My first year I was in high school I drove a horse and buggy and took a 2 CONT cousin. Helen rode to school with someone else in a horse and buggy. The 2 CONT second year I had a car so I could pick up helen and take here to and from 2 CONT school. And this is how we started going together. 2 CONT 2 CONT We were married in 1926. I farmed for my dad. Dad wanted me to stay on 2 CONT the farm so badly that he bought me a team of Belgium horses that weighed 2 CONT 2000 pounds each and they were not really farm horses. In the mean time 2 CONT Dad and I moved a little house that sat on the south end of Dad's 80 2 CONT acres. We jacked it up and put it on skids and moved it next door to the 2 CONT home place where it still is today. Helen and I had three babies in that 2 CONT house, Virginia, Jean and Everett. Jr. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1930 (I think) we bought a little farm east of Harlan. The house was 2 CONT in bad shape but the barns and out buildings were good. We had lots of 2 CONT hopes. Bill was born while we lived here. 2 CONT 2 CONT I had gotten involved in trucking and had made $1,000 one fall and then 2 CONT the bottom fell out and the beet factory closed. In the fall of 1931 the 2 CONT McMillen family purchased the beet factory. I had a little old truck and 2 CONT hauled beets to Woodburn, loaded them onto freight railroad cars to go to 2 CONT the sugar beet factory in Decatur. After I make about three trips at $.50 2 CONT per ton, I found out they would pay $1.50 per ton for them in Decatur. So 2 CONT I suggested to the growers they do this and they agreed. I immediately 2 CONT traded my truck that would haul 3 to 4 tons for a new semi-trailer. I 2 CONT bought the trailer in Delphos Ohio, mounted it on a dual wheeled tractor 2 CONT and a dual wheeled trailer and went directly into the fields and got the 2 CONT beets and hauled from 16 to 18 tons at $1.50 per ton and make four trips 2 CONT per day. I was making good money. In 1934 I was still hauling beets when 2 CONT Harold McMillan asked me to deliver sugar to Madison, Columbus, Niles, 2 CONT Mishawaka, and Milwaukee. Sometime in January I delivered sugar to Blue 2 CONT Ribbon Pies in Columbus Ohio when Mick McMillan called and asked if I 2 CONT would go to Bulksheets in Columbus and pick up a load of tankage which I 2 CONT did. On bringing it to Decatur, my truck was backed up to the old 2 CONT expellor plant and the tankage and soybean meal were poured out on the 2 CONT floor and hand mixed. This was sacked and tagged "Master Mix Feeds" and 2 CONT loaded back onto my truck which I then delivered to Marysville, Ohio. 2 CONT This started the "Master Mix Feeds" and my tenure with Central Soya. In 2 CONT the summer of 1935 I was appointed to head up their truck department. 2 CONT This took a lot of soul searching. I made several trips to my dad because 2 CONT I was scared. My dad was very supportive. "If this is what you want to do 2 CONT and they have offered you a position . . . that is what you should do . . 2 CONT . if that is what you like . . ." Good advice. 2 CONT 2 CONT In September 1935 I took the job as Automotive Transportation Manager for 2 CONT Central Soya, with complete control of hiring, firing, purchasing of 2 CONT equipment, safety and insurance. This was my life for about 35 years. In 2 CONT 1968 I approached my superiors because my job had gotten so big it ranged 2 CONT from Maine to Texas and Florida to Michigan. I asked to be relieved of my 2 CONT major duties and took a staff job until I retired in 1973. 2 CONT 2 CONT Larry was born in Decatur in a house on Walnut and Meibus. Ted was born in 2 CONT the house on the Homestead property. Our payments for that property and 2 CONT home were $13 per month. Then we built the home on Cleveland Street in 2 CONT 1940. Helen and I enjoyed our life on Cleveland Street for 50 years. In 2 CONT 1991 we bought a condo that we love. It has two bedrooms, living room, 2 CONT dining room, kitchen and large garage. The small yard is taken care of for 2 CONT us. 2 CONT 2 CONT When Larry was a baby in 1937 I got two weeks vacation, the first ever. 2 CONT And along with another couple, John and Marsha Smith, we rented a cottage 2 CONT on Crooked Lake for two weeks. With the exception of a couple of years we 2 CONT have still kept this family lake tradition. We have gone to different 2 CONT cottages and different lakes until now it is the Group Camp at Pokagon 2 CONT State Park. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mom (Helen) had always bought Christmas presents for every one each year 2 CONT and as the family grew the job became an impossible one. So it was decided 2 CONT that a T-shirt would be an ideal gift for everyone. So thus started the 2 CONT Christmas at the Lake. And now everyone receives a T-shirt and anxiously 2 CONT awaits to see what the design is to be this year. (Unless it is your year 2 CONT to design it) This year we will start a new tradition. In the past we have 2 CONT included others names who have been regulars at the lake, but this year we 2 CONT will include only the names of Hutker Family members. I hope this offends 2 CONT no one. You will get your T-shirt as usual, but your name will not appear 2 CONT on it. 2 CONT 2 CONT (B) Essay by Ted Hutker, written approx. 1976 to 1981: 2 CONT 2 CONT Everett Hutker first came to Adams County delivering sugar beets to the 2 CONT old sugar mill in Decatur from his farm in Milan Township, Allen County, 2 CONT Indiana. After building up his own trucking business, Mr. "Mac" McMillen 2 CONT hired him to manage the new truck department for his new company - Central 2 CONT Soya. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ancestors: Joseph Hutker (Huttker) immigrated from Germany in 1838, 2 CONT married Mary Thressa, had only one son, Bernard. Henry Bernard (only son 2 CONT of Bernard), 1876 - 1946, married Dora Bill Herrick. 2 CONT 2 CONT Everett Giles was born May 6, 1908 in a log house in Milan Township. He 2 CONT and Helen Spindler were the only members of the 1922 graduating class of 2 CONT the Milan Central (8th grade) School. While in high school, he played 2 CONT varsity basketball all four years. His senior year, the Harlan team made 2 CONT it to the Regional finals. He married Helen Spindler (born June 16, 1908, 2 CONT parents: William and Amy (Kurtz) Spindler) August 14, 1926. 2 CONT 2 CONT After purchasing 50 acres east of Harlan for $3,500, he became discouraged 2 CONT in farming and recognized a new need in trucking. Everett began taking 2 CONT eight or nine ton loads of sugar beets to Holland Central Sugar Plant in 2 CONT Decatur, earning $1.00 per ton. By 1934, when he owned a 16-ton rig, he 2 CONT began to haul sugar for the new owner Mr. "Mac" McMillen. He had the 2 CONT distinction of delivering the first load of Master Mix feed in 1934. 2 CONT Shortly afterwards, McMillan bought his budding trucking business so that 2 CONT Hutker could manage the new trucking department for Central Soya, starting 2 CONT at a weekly salary of $28.50, considered at that time to be a healthy 2 CONT salary. On September 1, 1935, he moved his family to the southwest corner 2 CONT of Meiber and Walnut Streets. In 1936, they moved to Homestead 13, where 2 CONT their monthly house payment was $13.50. Then moved to their present home 2 CONT at 733 Cleveland Street in March 1941. 2 CONT 2 CONT Soys'a truck department started with two trucks in 1935. For many years, 2 CONT being truck manager meant spending a lot of time on the road. Purdue 2 CONT University once presented him with an honorary degree of "Dean of 2 CONT Drivology", to commemorate his milestone of driving one million miles 2 CONT without an accident. Everett remained truck manager until 1969, when he 2 CONT took another job in the transportation department. He retired from Soya on 2 CONT June 1, 1973 after 38 years of service. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1976, Everett and Helen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2 CONT the presence of their six children, twenty grandchildren, eight 2 CONT great-grandchildren (with two more "on the way") and their spouses. I 2 CONT suppose that is technically what occurred, but as I grew up with and 2 CONT learned to know Grandpa, his heart was his strongest attribute. 2 CONT 2 CONT My family and I just returned from Indiana having enjoyed the annual 2 CONT Hutker Reunion. Many persons whom I tell of spending a week each year 2 CONT with 60-odd (used in the numerical context here) family members think that 2 CONT is a crazy notion. In these days of families breaking up, siblings not 2 CONT getting along, members moving away from home, etc., it seems that our 2 CONT family is rather unusual in staying so close. Grandpa and Grandma started 2 CONT this week of outdoor adventure as a simple family vacation. The tradition 2 CONT had continued for decades because of their determination to put their 2 CONT family first and keep everyone connected. It is not fair to represent 2 CONT this as a utopian experience; there is heated discussion concerning 2 CONT politics, religion, how to raise your kids, the best school system, the 2 CONT best popcorn, et.al. However, whatever the situation, Grandpa fostered an 2 CONT environment of unconditional love that we all feel. He accepted you 2 CONT entirely with all your faults with all his heart. That is an easy 2 CONT situation to want to come home to. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandpa's strength wasn't in what he said, but how he lived. He was a 2 CONT decent, compassionate man who demonstrated integrity in his everyday 2 CONT living. I never knew him to smoke, drink or rarely swear, although he did 2 CONT have a hankering for cheese. 2 CONT 2 CONT In April I made a visit to see Grandma and Grandpa and stay with them a 2 CONT day. I learned alot about how a marriage can last 68 years. The two had 2 CONT an incredibly symbiotic relationship that anticipated each other' needs 2 CONT and concerns. The compassion for each other was palatable. I wish that 2 CONT each couple contemplating the commitment of marriage would have the 2 CONT opportunity to spend a day with my grandparents. It would be a happier 2 CONT world, indeed. 2 CONT 2 CONT When my wife and I were married, Grandpa had two words of advice: Be 2 CONT Happy. Deceptively simple. Incredibly potent. A goal for every day. I 2 CONT believe he was the happiest man I have known. 2 CONT 2 CONT Last week, I was glad to have spent a few moments with Grandpa. He was 2 CONT very sick, but all he wanted to know was what my family and I were up to 2 CONT and how we were. There was alot of room in that man. He as filled with 2 CONT love. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mark A. He is your great, great, great grandfather. 2 CONT 2 CONT He married and had nine children. My father was the 3rd from the youngest. 2 CONT The grandmother died at age 43 and left him these nine children to raise. 2 CONT They lived on a farm near Milan Center, Indiana. He believed in education. 2 CONT All the children went through grade school and four of them went to 2 CONT college. 2 CONT 2 CONT At this time the government opened up the western territory. It could be 2 CONT homesteaded and owned for a small price and improving the land. 2 CONT Grandfather's family was raised and on their own. He decided to homestead 2 CONT in South Dakota. He took the youngest son with him and went west to Trip 2 CONT County, South Dakota. The closest town being Colome. They raised cattle 2 CONT and made a very good living. 2 CONT 2 CONT My father (William W Spindler) was a teacher. He and my mother had built a 2 CONT home on three acres of ground and had three children. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandfather thought it would be good for us to come and live with him. We 2 CONT went in the spring of 1913. We lived in a house made of sod. The roof was 2 CONT sod also. They poured tar over the roof to keep it from leaking. This was 2 CONT a warm house. It had two rooms, two doors and two windows. 2 CONT 2 CONT After a few years the farmers decided to plow up some of the land and 2 CONT plant crops. They planted corn, wheat, millet and clover. All went well. 2 CONT My grandfather was getting old and wanted to come home to Indiana so he 2 CONT sold the farm to my dad. In another year we sold out and came home too. 2 CONT 2 CONT In a few years the sand storm started. The ground in South Dakota was very 2 CONT sandy and very dry. The ground shouldn't have been plowed. The sand blew 2 CONT for several years. It covered fences, covered small buildings, left big 2 CONT holes in yard around building. People packed up and left. 2 CONT 2 CONT The folks that bought our farm couldn't make the payments. My folks were 2 CONT glad to get out of there and didn't ask for payment. In several years Dad 2 CONT got word that if he would pay the taxes he could have the farm back. But 2 CONT we didn't go back. 2 CONT 2 CONT I married Everett Hutker in 1926. He farmed for his dad for four years 2 CONT then we bought a farm. We paid $3,500 for 50 acres of good land. We paid 2 CONT $1,000 down and thought we could pay for it in a few years. Then the 2 CONT depression came and we couldn't pay the interest on what we owed. We had 2 CONT very good parents who helped us through this. 2 CONT 2 CONT Everett, your great grandfather, bought a truck and did trucking. He 2 CONT started hauling sugar beets to Central Soya in Decatur, Indiana. It wasn't 2 CONT long before he had a good job with Central Soya hauling sugar and feed. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was alone a lot of this time. He would be gone a week or two at a time. 2 CONT We had four small children and I had the stock to care for. Had to carry 2 CONT all our water, do washing on the board, plant garden and can fruit and 2 CONT vegetables. In spite of all this, we were happy. All our friends had the 2 CONT same problems. We were very happy and thankful that we didn't lose our 2 CONT farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1935 we moved to Decatur. In 1939 your grandfather (Ted Wayne Hutker) 2 CONT was born. 2 CONT 2 CONT We bought TV after we came to Decatur and enjoyed it very much. The shows 2 CONT were very different from now. We got news, comedy and clean love stories. 2 CONT One show we all liked was Amos & Andy. 2 CONT 2 CONT During the depression the holidays were changed. The holidays that come 2 CONT through the week were celebrated over the weekends to save energy. 2 CONT 2 CONT My best experience was having my children and seeing them grow up. And 2 CONT having grandchildren and great grandchildren. I really didn't have any bad 2 CONT experiences. Hard times but not bad. The good always out weighed the bad. 2 CONT 2 CONT I hope this helps you out Courtney. The watershed between the St. Joseph and Maumee rivers traverses 2 CONT the territory from southwest to northeast, and the rich black soil, with 2 CONT sand underlying or mixed, is almost perfect for farming. The crest of the 2 CONT valley, or the crest of the watershed is the ridge along which the 2 CONT Hicksville road was surveyed in 1839. This was to be known as the ridge 2 CONT road.
