Sir Humphrey's sister, Sarah Jennings, marriled Charles 2 CONT Tolbert whom Queen Anne then appointed Lord Tycondrell, ruler of Ireland. 2 CONT Queen was the girl's cousin. John Jennens, father of Sir Humphrey was the 2 CONT wealthies man in England -- much richer then the Queen, according to Mrs. 2 CONT Barnett. From the length of Humphrey's will, which was six pages in fine 2 CONT print, it seemed he still had plenty to bequeath when he died. Among other 2 CONT things, he left each of his three daughters a dowry of 4,000 pounds. He also 2 CONT left pages of small bequests of money to friends to buy rings or pieces of 2 CONT plate in his memory. 1 NOTE Comming down to more recent times, the English Earl, Lord Beecham, who is a 2 CONT distant relative on the English side, came to America last year (1942). The decision in his favor has revived the hopes of the 2 CONT Virginia and Kentucky families who are by descent entitled also to inheritance 2 CONT in this vast estate. 1 NOTE Among those who are known in this city to belong to this Jennengs family by 2 CONT lineal descent are Mrs. Annie Hawkins Miles (Frankfort, KY) and Mrs. Rosalie 2 CONT Montgomery Hays, wife of the Attorney General of Kentucky, N.R. Hays now of 2 CONT Frankfort. Mrs. Frankie Parker Davis, one of Kentucky's beautiful writers, who 2 CONT died a few years since, was also a Jennings descendent. We take from the 2 CONT lovely memorial of her, published after her death by her husband, Hiram Davis, 2 CONT a noted lecturer, the following data: 2 CONT "The mother of Mrs. Davis was Mary Howard Jennings, daughter of Colonel 2 CONT William Jennings, of Revolutionary fame. Colonel Jennings represented 2 CONT Christian County in those days when it was necessary to make the entire trip 2 CONT to Frankfort on horseback. Colonel William Jennings' father bore the same name 2 CONT and title and was Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Colonial Virginia. This 2 CONT Col. was first cousin to the Duchess of Marlborough, and also to the wealth 2 CONT William Jennings, whose vast fortune and the frauds by which it has been kept 2 CONT from the rightful heirs have been so often mentioned in the newspapers. In the 2 CONT family of Mrs. Davis' grandfather, Co. Wm Jennings, was a book that had been 2 CONT presented by the Duchess of Marlborough, and a gun that had descended from the 2 CONT wealthy William." 1 NOTE [Thus we see there are Jennings heirs in Christian County, as well as in other 2 CONT counties of the state, and if the heirs desire their names inscribed in the 2 CONT list of Kentucky descendants for future reference, we shall be glad to have 2 CONT them, and also their lineage, published in the Genealogical and Historical 2 CONT Department of the Register - ED] 2 CONT END 1 NOTE The following article entitled "ROMANTIC PURSIT OF A FORTUNE SINCE 1798 - THE 2 CONT JENNENS ESTATE" is found in the Kentucky State Historical Society Register, 2 CONT Vol 2 #6 page 67. 1 NOTE The interest in this estate continues unabated among the reputed heirs in the 2 CONT United States, and there are many in KY also, who still believe they will 2 CONT inherit the shares of their forefathers in this magnificant fortune of nearly 2 CONT a hundred millions, in England. 1 NOTE It was in 1798, we read, that Wm. Jennings died, leaving an estate that in 2 CONT 1850 was estimated at forty millions, and now with accumulated interest is 2 CONT said to be nearly a hundred millions. Many of the letters and valuable papers 2 CONT of the different heirs, in different sections of this country, are before us 2 CONT for inspection, and from these we shall make extracts that will at least 2 CONT satisfy the most incredulous, that the fortune is in England. 1 NOTE Writes R.A. Parrish, Jr., Dec. 1, 1850, London, Eng: "We now know this 2 CONT much-the estate is not a chimera; those now in possession have no right to it; 2 CONT absent persons who have never shown themseleves, possess that right. All that 2 CONT now remains to be determined is, who are those absent heirs at law?" 1 NOTE This letter was sent to Dr. Jas. H. Spencer, of Philadelphia, and in 1851 "a 2 CONT meeting was appointed of the heirs of Wm. Jennings, to raise funds to recover 2 CONT the estate for the true heirs." In February of that year this distinguished 2 CONT attorney , Mr. R.A. Parrish, Jr. of London, Eng., wrote, in a letter to Dr. 2 CONT Jas. H. Spencer , of Philadelphia.: "no human being can possibly recover this 2 CONT estate unless he makes out a case as transparent as day. He must base his 2 CONT claim upon the most irrefragable testimony and shed such light ______ the 2 CONT claims of all parties, living or dead as will sweep away every vestige of all 2 CONT doubt that he is a true heir at law." 1 NOTE The greatest difficulty the lawyers found in prosecuting the various claims 2 CONT was the careless and desultory manner in which the genealogy and history of 2 CONT the heirs had been kept in America. Some of them, it is said, had no written 2 CONT record at all of birth, marriage or death of the parties, and came before this 2 CONT crucial English bar with hearsay and recollection, backed in some instances 2 CONT alone by "what I heard such and such an uncle say." 1 NOTE With marvelous persistence the lawyers continued their investigations. The 2 CONT heirs in America finally found and settled upon, from all the facts, that the 2 CONT common ancestor was Humphrey Jennings, of Birmingham, England who was married 2 CONT in 1657 and died in 1690. 1 NOTE We here introduce chart No.1, showing the style of pedigree in 1869, prepared 2 CONT as an exhibit before the court in London, followed by chart No.2. Upon the 2 CONT branches indicated here were found families in almost every Statre of America, 2 CONT the greates number of them being found in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, 2 CONT and New York. 1 NOTE With varying succcess the pursuit went on. Sometimes the lawyers would say to 2 CONT the American heirs "they were in sight of the promised land." Many of the 2 CONT heirs became discouraged and refused to send any more money to prosecute their 2 CONT claims. Unlike the children of Israel they had not attended to the ____ of 2 CONT their people and consequently, before going into the expensive pursuit they 2 CONT had to pay out.............[SEE 1313_4.TXT FOR REMAINDER OF ARTICLE]...... 1 NOTE The following article entitled, "NINE CASTLES BELONG TO US", appeared in the 2 CONT Atlanta Journal Sunday magazine July 25, 1943 [page 8]: 1 NOTE It may came as a distinct surporise to the descendants of Sidney Lanier to 2 CONT learn that they are among the heirs in an estate in England that is worth not 2 CONT millions, but BILLIONS! It was a surprise to some Atlanta people, too, to 2 CONT learn that they could share in the Jennens Estate IF Mrs. E. Barnett, of 2 CONT Norfolk, Virginia, ever gets the affair in had sufficiently to gain for the 2 CONT American branch of the family its just desserts. 1 NOTE Mrs. Barnett was in town the other day, hunting up her relatives unto the 2 CONT third and fourth generatipons of Jennenses in order to get all the 2 CONT relationships straight for a book she is writing about the family. With the 2 CONT proceeds from this book, which sh says has been her lifework for thirteen 2 CONT years, she intends to go to England after the war and have it out with Lord 2 CONT Curzon who is in charge of the estate at the moment. For years, litigation has 2 CONT been going on in an effort on the part of the two sets of American heirs to 2 CONT get the whole thing settled. Some have 2 CONT invested as much as $50 in the hier stock. That sum is the highest individual 2 CONT investment. The others range from that down to the paltry dollar. According to 2 CONT the certificates given to subscribers, which are unique as far as corporate 2 CONT affairs usually go, the subscribing heirs are entitled to a share of the 2 CONT Jennens Estate in proportion to the amount of thier subscriptions. 1 NOTE AN INDUSTRIOUS BRANCH 1 NOTE The Humphrey branch of the Jennens Heir Association has labored long and 2 CONT industriously for its inheritance. Not only this city but nearby countis 2 CONT across the Delaware have been worked, but to the organization subscribers have 2 CONT been invited and secured throughout the country, until the project has assumed 2 CONT the dimensions of the beneficial progressive institutions of latest 2 CONT developement. The officers have boasted of documentary evidence to begin with 2 CONT and no end of capital to go ahead with the process of establishing the claim 2 CONT has been long and expensive, but the shareholders have gone ahead on the 2 CONT principle that where much has been lost there must be considerable lying 2 CONT around. There has been no backing out. Everybody who has joined the enterprise 2 CONT has paid in his money with the understanding that he was not to see it again 2 CONT unless something turned up in the other hemisphere. 1 NOTE The evidence on which the great Jennens estate litigation has been waged is 2 CONT furnished by that standard English publication, Dougla's Index Register, to 2 CONT next of kin, heirs at law and cases of unclaimed money. According to this 2 CONT authority of about a quarter of a century ago, Acton Place, near South Melton 2 CONT in County Suffolk, was the seat of William Jennens, Esq.. Humphrey Jennens, 2 CONT the grandfather of this Jennens, had valuable properties in Leicetershire, 2 CONT Whitwick, Warwick, and Shropshire, so that his grandson at the time of his 2 CONT death in 1798 had estate valued at 4,000,000 L. 1 NOTE All of this is plain enough and of sufficient record. What has caused the 2 CONT rising up of thousands of heirs is this interesting statement in Dougal's 2 CONT Index referring to the 1798 Jennens: "A will was found in his coat pocket 2 CONT sealed but not signed, which was owing as his favorite servant says to his 2 CONT master leaving his spectacles at home when he went to his solicitor's for the 2 CONT purpose of duly executing it." 1 NOTE ACTIVITY OF LONDON LAWYERS 1 NOTE Since the publication of Dougal's Index, a good many young and ambitious 2 CONT London barristers have made pilgrimages to this country and coincidentally 2 CONT with their excursions, heirs - not stockholders of the present regime, being 2 CONT bona fide heirs bearing the name Jennings - have been unearthed. Many of them 2 CONT have died. Dr. James Jennings of 202 Market Street, Camden was one of the 2 CONT last. But here are many Jennings yet living, as the directories of the various 2 CONT cities of the country show. Some haven't embarked in the golden argosy that 2 CONT was .....triumphantly to the inheritance. Others have, and acting under the 2 CONT advice of their English legal advisers and subscribers have been invited to 2 CONT joing them in their efforts. 1 NOTE The Humphrey branch of .....heirs, which has just met with ..... had, 2 CONT according to Secretary Buckman... a good deal to contend against, for searches 2 CONT revealed that fact that Humphrey left, besides the eighteenth century, 2 CONT thirteen children, a proverbially unlucky number, and wors still a number of 2 CONT which history has not rendered full and satisfactory accounts. Without doubt, 2 CONT however, one of these descendents came to this country in --80. that has been 2 CONT established by __ years of patient research. He arrived at Havre de Grace and 2 CONT walked to __mira, NY where he married a maiden by the name of Lucy Loop. Early 2 CONT in the present century was born to this couple Hector Jennings now in Sandusky 2 CONT Ohio, and the triumphant head of the Humphrey brach heirs. As told by 2 CONT Secretary Buckman yesterday is as follows: 1 NOTE TRIUMPH OF THE HUMPHREYS 2 CONT The British Court sent a commissioner from Toronto last month to take 2 CONT testimony. Henry Follett, out London Lawyer, who has been working up the ___ 2 CONT for us since about the first of 1889, ___ the commissioner at Sandusky, Ohio 2 CONT assisted him to take Hector's statement. Then they went back. Mr. Follett's 2 CONT fees are all paid. They are, we ___ exorbitant, but when so much money is at 2 CONT stake and so many people are interested, we can not, of course ___ to that. We 2 CONT have just heard from Mr. Follett that the old Jennens properties have all 2 CONT sifted down as to ownership and that just what Humphrey Jennens' heirs are 2 CONT entitled to has been discovered. It consists of three ___ for 100,000 (pounds) 2 CONT each. Two of them have been cancelled. The third one has sold and is now in 2 CONT the possession of an English nobleman. Our lawyer doesn't want us to say who 2 CONT he is because other heirs who are not with us might take advantage of the 2 CONT information. He assures us however that we will get the $500,000 and that the 2 CONT case is now down for trial on record, all the necessary testimony, which 2 CONT consists of transcripts of records, being on file. For that reason we have now 2 CONT closed our subscription books and will not permit anybody to come in with us 2 CONT for a division of the note. There will be no difficulty in recovering on it, 2 CONT because it is held by a nobleman and the $25,000 we have paid will cover all 2 CONT necessary expenses. Hundreds of residents of this city will share in this. 1 NOTE A BRANCH IN THE COLD 2 CONT The other branch of the heirs, which appears to have been left out in this 2 CONT latest discovery, is the "Jennens Association, USA which has an office at 217 2 CONT South Twelfth Street. Its representative in London is Thomas J. Kelley, who 2 CONT formerly resided at 216 South Twelfth. The secretary and manager is George W. 2 CONT Souder of 1834 Franklin Street, and the treasurer Mark Bauer, of 908 N. 2 CONT Seventeenth Street. Mr. Souder said yesterday that his branch had heard 2 CONT nothing new and seemed at a loss to know of anything that might have turned 2 CONT up. He said that a great many prominent business men and citizens of 2 CONT Philidelphia were on his list, but didn't want to be known publicly as being 2 CONT concerned. Therefore, if he ever knew anything he didn't propose to give it 2 CONT out to any but subscribers. 1 NOTE While the stock list of the Humphrey branch is 25,000 that of the Association 2 CONT of the USA is given at 36,000, the terms of subscription in each case being 2 CONT the same, $1 down. 1 NOTE One of the heaviest investors in the Humphrey Jennens enterprise is Dr. Lessey 2 CONT of 1508 Vine Street, who claims actual descent and has always been confident 2 CONT of getting something handsome out of the estate. 1 NOTE The people of Philadelphia, heirs to the estate who still kept to their 2 CONT allegiance as heirs, though at this time were not legally recognized,[cont.] 1 NOTE 1313 William Jennings the enteste 1 NOTE Descendents J-63 -> Bachelor who lived in Grosvenor Square, London, England. 2 CONT He was a Barrister (attorney) with offices in Bedford Row. He owned sizeable 2 CONT real and personal property and was said to be the richest commoner in England. 2 CONT Some say even wealthier then the Crown. 1 NOTE The following is an account of him found in Gentleman's Magazine July 19, 2 CONT 1798: 2 CONT In his 97th year, William Jennens, of Acton Place, near Long _______, County 2 CONT Suffolk, and of Grosvenor Square, Esq. He was born in September 1701, and was 2 CONT the son of Robert Jennens, Esq., aide to the Duke of Marllborough, (by Anne 2 CONT his wife, daughter of Carew Guidote, Esq., lineally descended from Sir Anthony 2 CONT XXXXXXXX, Knight, a noble of Florentine, employed in sundry embassies. 2 CONT Grandson of Humphrey Jennens of Erdington, County Warwick, Esq. Lord of Nether 2 CONT Whitacre in that county, and an eminent iron master in Birmingham. King 2 CONT William III was god-father to the late Mr. Jennens; among other valuables 2 CONT discovered in his house is a silver ewer which was the present of that monarch 2 CONT at his baptism. He had been page to George I, and during the period of his 2 CONT remaining a bachelor more given to penurious then hospitality. Of course his 2 CONT accumulations magnified even his powers of computation. He was the last 2 CONT Annuitant of the xxxxxxx totine of L100 a share, for which he had received 2 CONT L3000 year for many years past. He had property in almost every Fund, xxxxxxxxx 2 CONT was his immense wealth that the dividends in most of his xxxx have not been 2 CONT received since 1788, nor the interest on his xxxxxxx for a long period. In his 2 CONT iron chest, the key to which was not to be found till after a long search, hid 2 CONT in a Mortgage deed were bank notes of the year 1788, to the amount of L19,000 2 CONT and several thousand new guineas. About L20,000 were found in XXXXXXXX and 2 CONT bank notes at his town and country houses, also a key to a chest containing 2 CONT his mother's plate and valuables, which is deposited at Child's the bankers, 2 CONT and has never been opened since her death. He is reported to have always kept 2 CONT L50,000 in his banker's xxxxxxxxxxxxx any sudden emergency and had not drawn a 2 CONT draft on the Bank in the last fourteen years. He never till lately employed a 2 CONT regular stewart; not may years since an eminent Attorney of Suffolk happened 2 CONT to be present offered his assistance at his Audit, xxxxxxxxx the fatigue too 2 CONT great for Mr. Jennens, but he was answered with "you think I can't write"! 2 CONT He was very regular and exact about his account, insomuch that he even noticed 2 CONT his household xxxxxxxxxxxx their usual weekly amount. His expenses were 2 CONT supposed to have been L3,000 a year although his property it is thought cannot 2 CONT xxxxxxxx of two millions. It appears that he has had very faithfull servants, 2 CONT who will be all well provided for." 1 NOTE It is reported that a will was found in his coat pocket, sealed but not 2 CONT signed, which was owing, as his faithful servant says, to his having left his 2 CONT spectacles at home when he went to his solicitor's for the purpose of duly 2 CONT executing it, and which he afterwards for.............., the signed will was 2 CONT found and duly probated. The deceased left his landed estates to his mother 2 CONT and did not name any other heir in the event that she should predecease him. 2 CONT She did die before him so as far as the land was concerned he died intestate. 2 CONT There were no provisions in the will for his personal property. All of his 2 CONT estate therefore was intestate. 1 NOTE "Descendents" J-65 -> Under British law real estate would descend to the 2 CONT eldest male realative on the paternal side. Personal property would be divided 2 CONT equally among all living next of kin. For example, brothers and sisters. If 2 CONT none it would go up to the next relative to a common ancestor and then down. 1 NOTE A succesfull claim was made for the real estate on behalf of a child, George 2 CONT Augustus William Curzon (b.1788 d. 1805) by his mother, Lady Sophia Curzon 2 CONT who later became Baroness Howe. The common ancestor was Humphrey Jennings. 2 CONT If an heir could be found in the line of descent of Charles Jennings, the 2 CONT eldest son, he would inherit the real estate ahead of any descendant of 2 CONT William Jennings who was a younger son. Since there were male Curzons living 2 CONT at the time of William Jenning's (the intestate) death and also at the present 2 CONT time there can be no question about the real estate going to the family of 2 CONT Charles Jennings whose daughter married William Hanmer the grandfather of Lord 2 CONT Curzon. 1 NOTE Personal Property- At the time of his death there were only two cousins once 2 CONT removed living: William Lygon, grandson of Hester Jennings and Mary Lady 2 CONT Andover the granddaughter of Anne Jennings. Both Hester and Anne were the 2 CONT aunts of the intestate. These next of kin were appointed administrators and 2 CONT divided the real property amongst themseleves. 1 NOTE Because her son was an infant Lady Curzon took over all the property. The son 2 CONT and "heir" died and she continued to hold the property on behalf of her other 2 CONT son, Richard William Penn (1796-1870). In 1817 when he came of age he took 2 CONT possession himself and in 1821 was created First Earl Howe. 1 NOTE In 1853 several newspapers alleged that the Howe title to the property was 2 CONT contrary to law. They asserted that Richard Curzon was not the son of Penn 2 CONT Assheton Curzon and Sophia Howe. They said he was the illegitimate son of an 2 CONT Anne Oakes. 1 NOTE Jennings Fowlkes whose grandfather William Jennings (d.1775) was living in 2 CONT America at the time of the estate division. Had this been known in Great 2 CONT Britain he should have shared in the division of the personal property by 2 CONT William Lygon and Lady Andover. William Jennings (d.1775) was an uncle of the 2 CONT intestate. 1 NOTE The case for the Jennings in the United States was that the property of the 2 CONT intestate was fradulently taken by Richard Curzon. 1 NOTE For those that want to investigate this interesting estate furthur there may 2 CONT be information of interest in the Kentucky State Historical Soc. Register, V2, 2 CONT a Fortune since 1798 - the Jennings Estate. I have not as of this writing seen 2 CONT them. 1 NOTE The following article appeared in the Philadelphia Times on January 24, 1891: 1 NOTE JENNENS HEIRS WIN 2 CONT TRIUMPH OF TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND HEIRS TO THE FAMOUS ESTATE.
