1 NOTE Born in San Antonio, TX, she moved to Meridian, MS with her mother after

2 CONT high school at Meridian High School on May 24, 1912 and then attended The 
2 CONT Women's College in Montgomery, AL,  In 1950, she moved to Houston, TX and 
2 CONT in 1967 to Los Angeles and then to San Diego in 1969 where she lived until 
2 CONT her death.  She was very active in the Central Methodist Church in 
2 CONT Meridian and was a long time member of the DAR.  Her DAR National Number

1 NOTE After the death of her husband in 1896, she remained in Denison, TX with 
2 CONT her mother. Edwin Moody's brother, Francis (Frank) Sims Moody had asked 
2 CONT her to marry him. She would not accept his proposal until after her 
2 CONT mother's death in 1904.  The wedding was originally planned to be done in 
2 CONT the First Presbyterian Church in Denison, however, because of a major 
2 CONT yellow fever epidemic in Louisana, traffic west across the Mississippi 
2 CONT River was halted, and Frank Moody was unable to come to Denison.  She 
2 CONT packed and proceeded to Mississippi with her daughter, then 9 years old.  
2 CONT The wedding took place in Meridian, Mississippi in 1905.  Her father and 
2 CONT mother were born in North Carolina.  After losing everything during the 
2 CONT period following the war, they moved to the Sherman/Denison, TX area.
2 CONT 
2 CONT This is a letter written to her daughter Edwina on July 17, 1907.  This is 
2 CONT the day before Daisy Dean was born.

2 CONT My Darling Edwina,
2 CONT 
2 CONT I am not well this morning and some day it may happen as it does to some 
2 CONT little girls, that you may have no mother.  In this case, I should like 
2 CONT you to have a letter which I want you to read frequently, whenever you are 
2 CONT troubled or tempted to do wrong - also when you miss me and want me very 
2 CONT much, that you may know how much I have loved you and still love you.  I 
2 CONT believe in guardian angels, and will ask God to let me be yours to be with 
2 CONT you constantly night and day, to guard you and comfort you and keep you 
2 CONT from harm.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mother wants you to be a pure sweet girl and grow up to be a fine, sweet, 
2 CONT true woman. To do this, you must avoid making friendships with any boy or 
2 CONT girl who tries to lead you into doing wrong things.   You are now old 
2 CONT enough for your conscience to tell you what is wrong, and through your 
2 CONT prayers God will help you to resist it.  Learn to say "No" to any 
2 CONT suggestion of wrong-doing.  And remember that your mother and your papa 
2 CONT who had to leave his baby years ago will be grieved if you are not brave 
2 CONT enough to do right.

1 NOTE Although he used the title Colonel most of his life, he served several 
2 CONT years in the Confederate army as a private with Capt. A. P. Hill's Company 
2 CONT of Partisan Rangers, Mississippi Volunteers.  This was later changed to 
2 CONT Capt. Smyth's Company, Mississippi Partisan Rangers.  He was reported 
2 CONT Absent Without Leave from Oct. 31, 1862 to Mar 1, 1863 when it was learned 
2 CONT he had been captured.  He was paroled and exchanged on Dec 20, 1863, 
2 CONT signing a statement that he would go home and not return to fight. He did, 
2 CONT however, return to his company and continue to fight.  Pay records report 
2 CONT he was 5' 10", light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.

1 NOTE He came to Tuscaloosa, AL as a young boy, but he lived most of his life in 
2 CONT Jackson, MS.  He owned a brickyard in Jackson that supplied the bricks for 
2 CONT the State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion and other public buildings.  He 
2 CONT woned substantial property from what is now the old Capitol out to and 
2 CONT including part of what is now Millsaps College.  He was one of the 
2 CONT founders of the Galway Memorial Methodist Church.  One of the many unusual 
2 CONT stories about this man follows: In 1838, a man passing the recently built 
2 CONT church heard the sound of someone tapping on the inside brick wall.  He 
2 CONT went in and found Edwin Moody trying to loosen the bricks in the wall for 
2 CONT removal, because he said he had not been paid for them. It turns out that 
2 CONT during this time, the church was in financial trouble and Edwin Moody 
2 CONT assumed the Church's note.  He was repaid sometime between 1850 and 1860.  
2 CONT Edwin Moody was the original builder hired to construct the Capitol 
2 CONT Building.  He was later fired by the State Architect for not completing 
2 CONT the work.  Edwin Moody sued the State of Mississippi and obtained three 
2 CONT different judgments, the court ruling that the State Architect had 
2 CONT substantially change the plans and refused to pay for them.  Legend is 
2 CONT that because of the impending war, Edwin Moody was paid $37,000 in gold, 
2 CONT which he buried.  It has never been found.  When he died, there were 
2 CONT announcements regarding his death but no record of where he is buried can 
2 CONT be found.  Since Greenwood Cemetery was the only one in Jackson at the 
2 CONT time, it is assumed he is buried there.

1 NOTE John B. Watts attended the University of Mississippi for one year, then 
2 CONT returned to Lauderdale to farm.  After three years, he went to Texas and 
2 CONT worked for the Texas Pacific Railroad for two years, returning to 
2 CONT Lauderdale,  where he married in 1882.  In 1891, he was elected mayor of 
2 CONT Lauderdale, but declined the position for lack of time.

2 CONT   My father, Dr. Samuel Bell was adopted when an infant by his Uncle Dr. 
2 CONT Samuel Bell. of Dublin, Ireland, he was named for him, his father died 
2 CONT when he was very young, his Uncle was a very wealthy man and fully able to 
2 CONT give him every advantage in education and his profession, which he did. He 
2 CONT was educated at Old Trinity College, Dublin, and also received all other 
2 CONT advantages in medicine as he was a student in that branch for eight years 
2 CONT and seemed to thoroughly understand all its technicalities. From what I 
2 CONT have heard, his family were from Scotland, his mother was scotch, though 
2 CONT Bell is an English name.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     My Father displeased his Uncle by marrying sooner than he wanted him, 
2 CONT and therefore lost his interest in his wealth, he never sought to be 
2 CONT reconciled. A few weeks before his death, Brother Henry was looking over 
2 CONT his papers, and receiving directions about them, among them was the will 
2 CONT of the late lord Kennedy, of Scotland, he told Brother Henry that he was 
2 CONT his descendant. Only one other time do I remember of his mentioning it, he 
2 CONT met a Dr. Fernedy of Scotch descent, but he had never heard of Lord 
2 CONT Kennedy, so he knew that he was not a relative.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     My father once told me when I was making inquiries about his family, 
2 CONT he said remember, "Honor and Fame from no condition rise, act well your 
2 CONT part, there all the honor lies". 
2 CONT 
2 CONT     The family had their court of arms which was a large bell with small 
2 CONT bells around it. I did not learn the motto. I also learned that the other 
2 CONT side was a hand and dagger, I suppose the Kennedy. Addie Hale said, she 
2 CONT and her mother traced it out, I suppose that they had a relic to go by.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     My father seemed to want his children to depend entirely on their own 
2 CONT worth. I have thought that father was made unhappy by his Uncle's 
2 CONT displeasure. He had only one child a daughter, and when she married he 
2 CONT divided his wealth with which as spent on a profligate husband, and 
2 CONT remainder of wealth inherited by their son, equally as unworthy.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     Uncle CoIter, a brother in law of fathers wrote about the changes that 
2 CONT had taken place in his family, he had only one brother, who died sometime 
2 CONT after his marriage, he had no children, he had four sisters, their 
2 CONT families are scattered, some in Canada, also some of them in London, 
2 CONT England, and others in the United States.
2 CONT 
2 CONT     I can only date my mother's genealogy to the third generation.  Our 
2 CONT great grandfather was an Episcopal clergyman, a Mr. Duke. He married Miss 
2 CONT Anna Clifford, a decendant of the House of Clifford. My grandmother was 
2 CONT proud of her ancestors, she once replied to a gentleman who told her that 
2 CONT her daughter in law whom she had never met was considered haughty, she 
2 CONT said "The blood of the Dukes was equal to anything in America".
2 CONT 
2 CONT     My great grand parents had four children, two sons and two daughters, 
2 CONT the two sons resided in London, one of them was knighted for performing a 
2 CONT very skillful surgery operation and was known as Sir Valentine Duke. 
2 CONT Surgery was a talent of the family, it was through his influence that my 
2 CONT mother's youngest  brother got the position of bodyguard or soldier to 
2 CONT Queen Victoria, he afterwards rose and was a captain in the British Navy, 
2 CONT and was afterwards promoted again until he was the equal of anyone. We 
2 CONT heve not heard from them since the war, his name was John Park.  Sir 
2 CONT Valentine Duke was never married but was a wealthy man, and left his 
2 CONT wealth to his brothers' sons, who were two of the most noted surgeons in 
2 CONT London. From what I learned, the Dukes were people of considerable 
2 CONT influence. Surgery was inherited from the Clifford side of the house.

1 NOTE Captain Henry Neel served as Ensign, Lieutenant, and Captain in 
2 CONT Continental Service. He was at King's Mountain and other battles in the 
2 CONT vicinity.  His brother Captain William Neel was killed at King's Mt. and 
2 CONT another brother, Lt. Andrew Neel was also in the militia there.  The 
2 CONT family are of Scots descent and among the earliest settlers in Mecklenburg 
2 CONT County, NC where their old home still stands (1945), and where, in Steele 
2 CONT Creek Cemetery, their faimily monuments bearing Coats of Arms are visited 
2 CONT annually by thousands.

2 CONT He was commissioned on September 29, 1781 after previously serving several 
2 CONT years.  He was 5 foot 8 inches tall, brown hair and skin.  He died at sea 
2 CONT near Bermuda.  In 1790, he owned land in Beaufort, NC.  Dandridge, in his 
2 CONT history of the English prison ship Jersey, lists a Banjamin Leecraft as 
2 CONT one of the prisoners of war.  He may have been the father of this Benjamin 
2 CONT Leecraft.
