2 CONT Willis Etheridge (John, Marmaduke, Thomas) was born ca. 1725-30. He died 
2 CONT ca. 1812 in Currituck Co NC. He married, first (probably) Jean or Jane, 
2 CONT daughter of George and Isabel Powers of Currituck Co NC. He married, 
2 CONT second, ca. 1773-74 Lydia, widow of Capt. Hilary White. In 1774 Willis 
2 CONT Etheridge and Lydia his wife deeded to Hilary White 1/3 of a tract con- 
2 CONT taining 133 acres, "being my wife's dower part of the land that belonged 
2 CONT to Capt. Hilary White, dec'd., on the north side of Church's Island" 
2 CONT (Currituck D.B. 2, p. 234). Willis Etheridge H#128 was a corporal in Capt. 
2 CONT William Bray's Company of militia in 1754 (Colonial and State Records of 
2 CONT North Carolina, Vol.22, p. 333); represented Currituck Co. in the Assembly 
2 CONT in 1762 (ibid., Vol. 6, pp. 819, 859, 893, 919 and 927); was appointed a 
2 CONT Justice of Currituck Co. in 1776 (ibid., Vol. 20, p. 993); and was again a 
2 CONT Burgess in 1785 (ibid., Vol. 20, pp. 1, 3, 39, 46, 68, 72, 76, 79, 81, 83, 
2 CONT 89 and 102). He was Public Registrar of Currituck Co. in 1774 (D.B. 7, p. 
2 CONT 13). The 1775 list of taxables in Currituck Co. (Jones, op. cit., p. 6) 
2 CONT shows three Willis Etheridges, Willis with 1 tax- able, Willis, Jr. with 
2 CONT 2, and Willis, Sr. with 4. One of these was certainly Willis H#128, though 
2 CONT if he was the Willis, Sr. mentioned, the extra taxables were slaves, for 
2 CONT he was hardly old enough to have had tithable [sic:taxable] sons in 1755. 
2 CONT The other Willis Etheridges were probably Willis Etheridge H#143b, son of 
2 CONT William Etheridge H#39, and perhaps Willis Etheridge H#155, son of David 
2 CONT Etheridge H#42. "Willis Etheridge, Sr." could even possibly have been 
2 CONT Willis H#64, though we gave grounds in the section on William Etheridge 
2 CONT H#39 for thinking that this Willis Etheridge (son of Charles) who was born 
2 CONT about 1708, died young. The Currituck Co, tax list of 1779 (Jones, op. 
2 CONT cit., p. 11) shows only one Willis Etheridge, namely, Willis H#128. The 
2 CONT Willis Etheridges had appareently moved by thuis date to Camden Co NC, 
2 CONT where they are shown in the Census of 1790 (see section on William 
2 CONT Etheridge H#39). The Census of 1790 shows no Willis Etheridge in Currituck 
2 CONT Co., but Willis was probably living in that year with his son James (being 
2 CONT the second son born before 1774 in James's family); for in 1790 he had 
2 CONT deeded practically all his property to his sons William and James (see 
2 CONT later). Willis Etheridge was the chairman of the com- mitee which assessed 
2 CONT the tithables [taxables?] in 1779 (Jones, p. 11). In 1772, probably on the 
2 CONT eve of his second marriage, Willis Etheridge H#128 made a deed of gift to 
2 CONT his son, William Etheridge, of two tracts: 155 acres patented by Charles 
2 CONT Prescott in 1761 and 63 acres patented by Thomas Lawther in 1745, both 
2 CONT having been purchased by Willis from Capt. John Woodhouse, dec'd. 
2 CONT (Currituck Co. D.B. 2, p. 434); and in the same year, 1772, he made a deed 
2 CONT of gift to his son James Etheridge of two tracts: 119 acres, part of a 
2 CONT patent to Evan Miller, dec'd., and 75 acres, part of a tract taken up by 
2 CONT An- drew Consaull (ibid., p. 486). On Jan. 30, 1790 Willis Etheridge 
2 CONT deeded to his sons, James and William Etheridge, to James 113 acres that 
2 CONT he had bought of Thomas Miller, dec'd., and of Amos Etheridge, dec'd. 
2 CONT (i.e., Amos, Jr. H#287); and to William 100 acres in the Lawther patent 
2 CONT adjoining Capt. John Woodhouse (D.B. 6, p. 70). On Feb. 20, 1790 he deeded 
2 CONT 3 negroes to his sons James and William (ibid., p. 84). It is uncertain 
2 CONT whether the following Currituck Co. deeds refer to Willis Etheridge H#128: 
2 CONT (1) Dec. 3, 1782, Willis Etheridge of Currituck Co. to Frankey Nichols 
2 CONT receipt for "all right, title and interest" (D.B. 4, p. 70); and April 13, 
2 CONT 1784, William Mackey of Princess Anne Co. to Willis Etheridge of Currituck 
2 CONT 2 negroes (D.B. 4, p. 239). The mention of Prin- cess Anne Co. in the 
2 CONT latter deed may mean that the Willis Etheridge referred to was Willis 
2 CONT H#155, son of David Etheridge H#42 of Princess Anne Co. Willis Etheridge 
2 CONT H#128 did not die until about 1812, quite an old man. His will, dated Jan. 
2 CONT 28, 1806 and probated in Currituck Co. about 1812 (Jones, op. cit., p. 
2 CONT 80), mentions his son William; son James, dec'd. (mention of James's 
2 CONT daughters, but not by name); and the will was witnessed by a Lydia 
2 CONT Etheridge, otherwise unknown. In addition to the children mentioned in the 
2 CONT will, Willis Etheridge H#128 seems to have had a daughter Jane who married 
2 CONT a Lee, and pre- deceased him in 1801. The will of Jane Lee, dated 1798 and 
2 CONT probated in 1801, leaves a bequest fo he grandson William Etheridge (i.e., 
2 CONT William H#441, son of John Etheridge H#288); and appoints her brother, 
2 CONT William Etheridge, executor. The only William Etheridge who appears at 
2 CONT this time in Currituck Co. seems to be William, son of Willis H#128, so 
2 CONT that Jane Lee also seems to have been a daughter of Willis.

2 CONT Marmaduke Etheridge (Thomas) was born ca. 1647-48 and died after 1716, 
2 CONT probably in Currituck Co NC. He married, ca. 1670-75, Elizabeth Yates, 
2 CONT daughter of Richard Yates and Jane Yates, and granddaughter of John and 
2 CONT Joan Yates. She died prior to 1690. He married, second, Barbara Fenford, 
2 CONT daughter of Thomas and Sarah Fenford. She was still living in 1716. The 
2 CONT will of Thomas Fenford, cooper, dated Sept. 23, 1675 and probated in 
2 CONT Norolk Co. Nov. 13, 1679 (Book 4, p. 67, McIntosh, Vol. I, p. 72), 
2 CONT mentions his son Thomas, who is to be bound out as an apprentice; "my 
2 CONT daughters"; and wife Sarah, whom he appoints executrix. On Feb. 16, 
2 CONT 1690/91 Marmaduke Etheridge, carpenter, made a deed of gift to his wife 
2 CONT Barbary Etheridge of the land which she inherited from her father, "and 
2 CONT after her decease to her eldest son she shall have begotten, and if no 
2 CONT son, her eldest daughter begotten by me" (Book 5, p. 191). On Oct. 12, 
2 CONT 1714 Marma- duke Etheridgeotten, and if no son, her eldest daughter 
2 CONT begotten by me" (Bk 5, p. 191). On Oct, 12, 1714 Marmaduke E., Barbary his 
2 CONT wife, and John Etheridge, their son and heir at law, deeded to John 
2 CONT Hanbury, Jr. 100 acres, part of the land that Thomas Fenford left to his 
2 CONT daughters Sarah, Barbara and Ruth, and divided by them and their husbands 
2 CONT Mar. 16, 1687/8 (Book 9, p. 352). On May 7, 1716 the same deeded to John 
2 CONT Manning the same 100 acres (Book 9, p. 531). Sarah Fendford, mother of 
2 CONT Barbara Etheridge, was born 1648-49, as she gave her age as 26 in a 
2 CONT deposition Mar. 17, 1674/5 (Book 4, p. 162). The son, Thomas Fendford, 
2 CONT died about 1690, as indicated by Marmaduke Etheridge's deed above and by a 
2 CONT suit of Jacob Smith versus Thomas Fendford, deceased, June 16, 1691, in 
2 CONT which a division of his lands is mentioned (O.B. 1686-93, p. 226). Of the 
2 CONT other daus of Thomas Fendford, Sr., Sarah Fenford married John Hanbury 
2 CONT (see section on Aaron Etheridge H#27) and Ruth Fendford married William 
2 CONT Sugg (see section on John Etheridge H#78). On Aug. 16, 1675 Marmaduke 
2 CONT Etheridge and Elizabeth his wife deeded to Wil- liam Brackett 215 acres 
2 CONT left to Marmaduke by his father Thomas Etheridge, half of a patent for 430 
2 CONT acres granted to Thomas in 1665, of which he had given the other half to 
2 CONT his son, John Etheridge H#3, Mar. 1, 1668/9 (Book 4, pp. 2 and 3). On 
2 CONT April 18, 1676 Marmaduke Etheridge was ordered to be paid as a witness, 
2 CONT along with his his brothers John and Edward (O.B. 1675-86, unpaginated). 
2 CONT Soon after his second marriage, on Oct. 4, 1692, Marmaduke Etheridge and

2 CONT time and born after 1678, as he is not mentioned in his grandfather 
2 CONT Yates's will. On Mar. 15, 1696/7 John Ferebee and Elizabeth his wife 
2 CONT deeded 200 acres to Marmaduke Etheridge, Sr. (Book 6, p. 85). On July 15, 
2 CONT 1700 Richard Etheridge, "with the consent of Marmaduke Etheridge my father 
2 CONT and Elinor Etheridge my wife," deed- ed to John Hull of Nansemond Co. 100 
2 CONT acres near his brother Marmaduke Ether- idge, "part of 300 acres granted 
2 CONT to John Blake in 1663 and by him sold to Richard Yates, long deceased, and 
2 CONT by Yates in his will dated Nov. 22, 1678 given to Elizabeth Yates his 
2 CONT daughter and to the aforementioned Marmaduke Etheridge, her husband, 
2 CONT during their lives, then to descend to Elizabeth's heir, who is the said 
2 CONT Richard Etheridge" (Book 6m p. 237, see also, p. 193, a deed, much 
2 CONT mutilated, from Richard, Eleanor and Marmaduke dated July 17, 1700). On 
2 CONT Mar. 22, 1703/4 Marmaduke Etheridge and Barbary his wife deeded to Thomas 
2 CONT Cherry 175 acres "near my son Marmaduke" and others. (Book 7, p. 35). In 
2 CONT the Norfolk Co. Quitrent Roll of 1704 Marmaduke Etheridge (Sr.) is listed 
2 CONT with 525 acres (Va. Mag. Of Hist. and Biog., Vol. 30, p. 62). On Oct. 16, 
2 CONT 1704 Timothy Ives, Jr. and Rachel his wife deeded 25 acres to Marmaduke 
2 CONT Etheridge, Jr. (ibid., p. 61). On Nov. 18, 1712 Marmaduke Etheridge (Jr.) 
2 CONT and Elizabeth his wife deeded land to Jonas Holoday (Bool 9, p. 216). 
2 CONT Marmaduke Etheridge and his family seem to have moved to Currituck Co., NC 
2 CONT 1712-16, or a little later. Perhaps their land fell into NC as a result of 
2 CONT the survey of the bound- ary line between VA and NC 1711-12. Marmaduke 
2 CONT Etheridge is shown with 3 taxables in Currituck Co. in 1715, his son with 
2 CONT 2 in the same year (Journal of N.C. Genealogy, Vol. 10, p. 1280).

2 CONT Timothy Peade was granted 640 acres in 1691-92, died soon after, and that 
2 CONT Marmaduke and Richard Etheridge (Everedge) surveyed the land "during the 
2 CONT nonage of their brother, deceased, whose heirs they are"; and on Nov. 17, 
2 CONT 1717 the two Etheridges were summoned to the next Court to answer the 
2 CONT matter. As the Peale heirs really owned the land, Marmaduke and Richard 
2 CONT would hardly have been heirs of their deceased minor brother, if he had 
2 CONT not been a full brother.

2 CONT a deed in Norfolk Co.). *H#35. Solomon Etheridge, probably. The Journal of 
2 CONT North Carolina Genealo- gy (Vol. 13, p. 1813) shows that as a result of an 
2 CONT act to enable people to sell entailed lands below a certain value, Abner 
2 CONT Etheridge of Currituck Co. (who was eldest son and heir of Solomon 
2 CONT Etheridge--see later) was authorized in 1756 to sell 211 acres which was a 
2 CONT grant to Marmaduke Etheridge in Jan., 1714. This certainly indicates 
2 CONT strongly that Solomon Etheridge of Currituck Co., NC was a second son of 
2 CONT Marmaduke Etheridge by his second wife. Solomon was probably born ca. 
2 CONT 1695. The relationship is also indicated by the fact that Solomon 
2 CONT Etheridge was a witness to the will of John Etheridge H#34, and that 
2 CONT Willis and Caleb Etheridge, sons of John H#34, were witnesses to Solomon 
2 CONT Etheridge's will, their father being dead at the time.

1 NOTE Richard Etheridge (Marmaduke, Thomas) was born probably ca. 1674-76. He 
2 CONT died 1750 in Currituck Co NC. He married, first, Eleanor ______, and 
2 CONT second, Sarah ______, his wife when he wrote his will (1740). There seems 
2 CONT to be no way to distinguish these two as to which was the mother of which 
2 CONT children. Therefore, N.B.: All children have for the sake of simplicity 
2 CONT been placed as children of Richard and his first wife Eleanor. There is no 
2 CONT factual basis for this, only the practical consideration of plac- ing them 
2 CONT all together [This paragraph wholly by me, SGE]. We have mentioned in the 
2 CONT section on his father Marmaduke Etheridge H#7 that Richard Etheridge and 
2 CONT his wife Eleanor on July 5, 1700 deeded away the land that he had 
2 CONT inherited in Norfolk co. from his grandfather Richard Yates. Rich- ard 
2 CONT Etheridge was appointed a Justice of Currituck Co NC Oct. 5, 1725 (N.C. 
2 CONT Colonial and State Records, Vol. 2, p. 572), and was a juror in the same 
2 CONT coun- ty in 1723 (ibid., Vol. 25, p. 188). The will of Richard Etheridge, 
2 CONT dated Feb. 12, 1739/40 and probated in Currituck Co. at the April Court, 
2 CONT 1750 (Hathaway, N.C. Hist. and Gen. Register, Vol. 1, p. 208; Jones, Wills 
2 CONT of Currituck and Dare Cos., N.C., p. 26), mentions his sons Adam and 
2 CONT Sampson; daughters Dianah Dowe, Hellena (Eleanor?) Dowdy and Elizabeth 
2 CONT Dowdy; grandson Robert Tucker; granddaughters Priscilla Etheridge and 
2 CONT Deborah Fields; wife Sarah; and ap- points his sons Adam and Sampson 
2 CONT executors. Sarah Etheridge was living in Cur- rituck Co. in 1755 with 1 
2 CONT taxable (Jones, p. 6), probably her son Sampson, as he does not appear, 
2 CONT though the son Adam does [It is not apparent whether the author means here 
2 CONT to say that he knows that Sampson is actually HER son--SGE].

2 CONT probably a Miss Tartm as he seems to have had a son named Tart Etheridge. 
2 CONT Adam Etheridge was a juror in Currituck Co NC Feb. 23, 1739/40 (Colonial 
2 CONT and State Records of North Carolina, Vol. 4, p. 520), indicating that he 
2 CONT was born about 1715, if not earlier. He is shown with 3 taxables in 
2 CONT Currituck Co. in 1755 (Jones, Wills of Currituck and Dare Cos., N.C., p. 
2 CONT 5) indicating at least two sons over 16 and born before 1739, which tends 
2 CONT to confirm his birth as about 1710-15. The Currituck Co. records show only 
2 CONT one will of an Adam Etheridge, but as that was written in 1812 and 
2 CONT probated in 1813, it must have been Adam H#119's son. This Adam, along 
2 CONT with Tart and Jesse Etheridge, all of whom owned land on Roanoke Island 
2 CONT and in whose families the name Adam occurs, seem to have been sons of Adam 
2 CONT H#119. The taxables of Currituck Co. for 1779 show all three names, Adam, 
2 CONT Jesse and Tart Etheridge (Jones, op. cit., p. 11). It looks as though it 
2 CONT ought to have shown two Adams, Sr. and Jr., but only one is shown, 
2 CONT probably the son, and perhaps Adam H#119 had in that year been ex- cused 
2 CONT from levies due to his age, for he was almost certainly over 60. How- 
2 CONT ever, he was still living in 1765 when his brother Sampson Etheridge wrote 
2 CONT his will and mentions his brother Adam Etheridge (see section on Sampson 
2 CONT Ether- idge H#120), but was probably dead by 1790, for only one Adam 
2 CONT Etheridge is again shown in the Census of that year. He may have been 
2 CONT still living, how- ever, and one of the 4 males born before 1774 shown in 
2 CONT the family of Tart Etheridge in 1790, Tart being probably his eldest son.

2 CONT He is not shown in the Cur- rituck Co. taxables of 1755, though he may 
2 CONT have been the taxable charged to his mother or stepmother, Sarah 
2 CONT Etheridge, in that year (Jones, Wills of Cur- rituck and Dare Cos.," p. 
2 CONT 6). However, he was probably in Norfolk Co VA in 1755, for he appears in 
2 CONT 1751 in that county with 1 tithable in the district from the Hollow Poplar 
2 CONT to Great Bridge, and again in the 1754 tithables list with 1 tithable 
2 CONT "from the Hollow Poplar to the Upper Inhabitants." He was sued in Norfolk 
2 CONT Co. by Aquila Sugg Jan. 17, 1754 (Norfolk Co. O.B. 1753-55, p. 9); sued 
2 CONT William Martin there Dec. 19, 1755  (O.B. 1755-59, p. 29); and sued Thomas 
2 CONT Stewart there April 17, 1761 (O.B. 1759-63, p. 60). He obviously owned 
2 CONT land on the border of Norfolk Co VA and Currituck Co NC, and in 1758 he 
2 CONT (or possibly his son Sampson, who may have been born as early as 1740) was 
2 CONT serving in Capt. John Woodhouse's Company in Currituck Co. (Colonial and 
2 CONT State Records of N.C., vol 22, p. 391; Jones, op. cit., p. 9). Sampson 
2 CONT Etheridge, Sr. and Sampson Etheridge, Jr. are both shown in the taxables 
2 CONT of Currituck Co. in 1779 (Jones, op. cit., p. 11), and Sampson's son 
2 CONT Samuel was probably one of the Samuel Etheridges shown as a taxable in 
2 CONT that year. However, the tithables of Norfolk Co. show Sampson Etheridge 
2 CONT with 1 tithable in 1771 "from Great Bridge to Edmunds Bridge"; in 1778 and 
2 CONT 1780 "from Great Bridge to Edmunds Bridge and New Mill Creek"; and with 1 
2 CONT tithable 1782-92 in the regular personal taxes. The Norfolk Co. Census of 
2 CONT 1782 shows Sampson Etheridge with a family of 3 whites "on the south Side 
2 CONT of the Western Branch as far as New Mill Creek." Sampson Etheridge is 
2 CONT shown with 30 acres in the Land Books of Norfolk Co. 1787-1806. These 
2 CONT later references probably concern the son, Sampson, Jr., however, rather 
2 CONT than the father, Sampson H#120. The tithable charged to Samp- son 
2 CONT Etheridge in Norfolk Co. around 1790, however, must have been a son or 
2 CONT other relative on his land, for both Sampson, Sr. and Sampson, Jr. are 
2 CONT shown in Currituck Co NC in the Census of 1790. The whole family of 
2 CONT Sampson Ether- idge is shown in a group in that Census (pp. 21 and 22). 
2 CONT Sampson (i.e., Samp- son, Jr.) is shown with 3 males b. before 1774, 1 
2 CONT male b. 1774-90, 6 females and 1 slave. Right next to him comes Asa 
2 CONT Etheridge (a grandson of Sampson H#120, as we shall see), with 2 males b. 
2 CONT before 1774 and 3 females. A little later on the same page (21), but with 
2 CONT no Etheridges between, is shown Samson Etheridge, Sr. (i.e., H#120), with 
2 CONT 1 male b. before 1774 and 1 female. And on page 22, with no Etheridges 
2 CONT intervening, is shown Samuel Etheridge with 1 m b. before 1774, 2 males b. 
2 CONT 1774-90, 3 females and 1 slave. Sampson Etheridge H#120 appears in a 
2 CONT number of deeds in Currituck Co., but with never any mention of his wife's 
2 CONT name. He owned land on Powell's Point in the county. The deeds are as

2 CONT It is unusual to entitle an account of this sort for one about whom so 
2 CONT little is known outside of official records. Yet Silas Etheridge (b. ca. 
2 CONT 1784, d. 1826 or 1827) is my earliest documented Etheridge ancestor. 
2 CONT Silas' father left no recorded will, and the Currituck County, North 
2 CONT Carolina marriage records were destroyed by fire about 140 years ago. 
2 CONT However, according to family tradition and other evidence, Silas 
2 CONT Etheridge, my great-great grandfather, was one of five sons (per the 1790 
2 CONT census) of William Etheridge (b. ca. 1745-50, d. 1836 or 1837) and Judith 
2 CONT Marmaduke (1756(?)--1816), both of Currituck County, N.C. Judith was 
2 CONT likely the sister of Elijah Marmaduke of Powell's Point. By 1790, William 
2 CONT had apparently moved to Roanoke Island from upper Currituck County. He was 
2 CONT known as "Captain Ether- idge" and was probably in sea trade. Judith was 
2 CONT said to have been a teacher and a lay reader in the Anglican church. Her 
2 CONT gravestone, shown to me be my father, is in the small Tillett cemetery 
2 CONT just north of Manteo.... Silas' was but one of the many branches of the 
2 CONT Etheridges in southeast Vir- ginia and northeastern North Carolina. 
2 CONT According to Boddie's Historical South- ern Families, the first Etheridge 
2 CONT in this part of the country and progenitor of the above branches, was 
2 CONT Thomas Etheridge, who arrived from England about 1635. By his death in 
2 CONT 1671, Thomas had five sons and three daughters. had been appointed 
2 CONT constable and surveyor of the highways, and owned considerable land along 
2 CONT the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Lower Norfolk County, 
2 CONT Virginia. The first Etheridge in North Carolina may have been Marmaduke 
2 CONT Etheridge, fourth son of Thomas. He was surveyed into the then Currituck 
2 CONT Precinct of Albemarle County when the intercolony line was moved north in 
2 CONT 1711-12. He could well have been named for Marmaduke Marrington, neighbor 
2 CONT and possible brother-in-law of Thomas. That first name was not rare in the 
2 CONT colonies and could have been inspired by the ship "Marmaduke," which 
2 CONT brought many from England in the first half of the 17th century [wrong; 
2 CONT Marmaduke is an old surname, used also as a given name long before that 
2 CONT ship was ever built]. Marmaduke Etheridge had four sons, two, Richard (b. 
2 CONT probably ca. 1674-76, d. 1750) and Marmaduke (who had no sons), by his 
2 CONT first wife, and two, of whom the eldest was John (b. ca. 1692-93, d. 1744) 
2 CONT [and the other Solomon] by his second wife. Richard was appointed a 
2 CONT justice of Currituck Precinct, John Ethe- ridge served that Precinct as 
2 CONT justice, treasurer, and frequently in the Gener- al Assembly from 1726 to 
2 CONT 1743. His second son, Willis, was also a justice and was an assemblyman 
2 CONT before and after the Revolution and county registrar after the Revolution. 
2 CONT Silas was Willis' grandson. He married Sally (Sarah) Etheridge, daughter 
2 CONT of Asa Etheridge of Currituck, about 1808 and by 1812 had moved from 
2 CONT Roanoke Is- land to a farm on or near the Scuppernong River, Tyrrell Co. 
2 CONT Asa, son of an- other John Etheridge, was Richard Etheridge's 
2 CONT great-grandson and thus Silas' half third cousin. Silas had two sons, 
2 CONT Daniel (1820-1897) and Asa (1811-1885), and a daughter Fanny, or Frances 
2 CONT (b. about 1815). His was among the county's larger farms, though he 
2 CONT apparently owned no slaves. Daniel Valentine Etheridge, my 
2 CONT great-grandfather, married Ann Hagerty in 1834 and moved to a farm near 
2 CONT Center Hill (not Tyner) in Chowan County. His brother Asa married Derector 
2 CONT Kemp in 1834, remained in Tyrrell County, and farmed most of the acreage 
2 CONT left by Silas. Both brothers became Baptist elders. Daniel preached in the 
2 CONT old Ballard's Bridge church, now near State Highway 32. Asa Etheridge had 
2 CONT four daughters and two sons, descendants of whom live in Tyrrell and 
2 CONT adjacent counties. Their names and appoximate birthdates were: Sarah 
2 CONT (1838), Mary (1841), Dorcas (1843), Joseph (1845), Samuel (1849), and 
2 CONT Elizabeth (1855). Fanny married Job Swain in 1844. In addition to a son 
2 CONT Nathan by Swain's previous marriage, they had William (1844), Sarah 
2 CONT (1849), who prob- ably died young, and Joseph (1855). After his wife's 
2 CONT death in 1872, Daniel V. Etheridge with his younger son, Daniel Warren 
2 CONT (1856-1932), my grandfather, moved to Roanoke Island, where his older son, 
2 CONT Joseph William (1837-1893) was a merchant. From 1868 to 1870, Joseph 
2 CONT served in the State Senate and sponsored the bill to form Dare County. He 
2 CONT also served twice as Superintendent of the Sixth District of the Life Sav- 
2 CONT ing Service. Joseph had two sons and three daughters. My grandfather 
2 CONT Daniel was a prominent citizen of Manteo and the father of three 
2 CONT children--William (1883), Edward (1885), Mildred (1887)--by his first 
2 CONT wife, Humantia Meekins, and three--Randal (1897), Norman (1900), and Annie 
2 CONT (1904)--by his [here his account breaks off, perhaps through a printing

1 NOTE John Etheridge (Marmaduke, Thomas) was born ca. 1692-93, and died 1744 in 
2 CONT Currituck Co NC. He married, probably ca. 1717-18 Eleanor Bright, daughter 
2 CONT of Richard Bright of Currituck Co NC. We mentioned in the sect. on 
2 CONT Marmaduke Etheridge H#7 that in 1714 Marmaduke, his second wife Barbara, 
2 CONT and their eldest son John deeded away the land in Norfolk Co. that Barbara 
2 CONT had inherited from her father, Thom- as Fenford. John Etheridge seems to 
2 CONT have been unmarried a this time, as no wife signed the deed; and the same 
2 CONT is true of a second deed the three made for this land in 1716. The will of 
2 CONT Richard Bright, father of Eleanor Etheridge, dated Feb. 20, 1733/4 and 
2 CONT probated in Currituck Co NC July 1, 1740 (Hathaway, N.C. Hist. and Gen. 
2 CONT Reg., Vol. I, p. 28), mentions his sons Richard, Hanson, Solomon, William, 
2 CONT James and Samuel Bright, and his daughters Ann Cox, Eleanor Etheridge and 
2 CONT Edie Bright. John Etheridge H#34 was a rather prominent citizen of 
2 CONT Currituck Co NC. He is shown with 770 acres in Currituck Precinct in the 
2 CONT arrears of quitrents, 1729-32, published in 1735 (N.C. Colonial and State 
2 CONT Records, Vol. 22, p. 247). He was appointed a Justice of Currituck Co. May 
2 CONT 18, 1731 and again Mar. 5, 1739/40 (ibid., Vol. 3, p. 234 and Vol. 4, p. 
2 CONT 345); was a juror Feb. 23, 1739/40 (Vol. 4, p. 520); and was treasurer of 
2 CONT Currituck Co. about 1729 (Vol. 3, p. 323). He represented the county as 
2 CONT Burgess in the General Assembly pretty steadily from 1726 to 1743 (Vol. 2, 
2 CONT pp. 608, 612, 624; Vol. 3, pp. 275, 277, 285, 286, 270, 301, 310, 312, 
2 CONT 316, 562, 579, 580, 597 and 641; and Vol. 4, pp. 115, 388, 652). He is 
2 CONT perhaps the John Etheridge who petitioned for 300 acres of land Feb. 14, 
2 CONT 739/40 (Vol. 4, pp. 440, 627 and 650), and may be the John Etheridge who 
2 CONT proved his rights for 7 whites in Currituck Co. Mar. 16, 1743/4 (Vol. 4, 
2 CONT p. 626). However, as John Etheridge H#34 had lived in Curri- tuck Co. for 
2 CONT over 25 years in 1744, this last record looks as though it may refer to a 
2 CONT John Etheridge who had just moved into North Carolina from Norfolk Co VA, 
2 CONT perhaps John Etheridge H#94, the putative brother of Timothy Etheridge 
2 CONT H#93. The will of John Etheridge (H#34), dated April 3, 1744 and probated 
2 CONT in Cur- rituck Co NC at the July Court, 1744 (Hathaway, N.C. Hist. and 
2 CONT Gen. Reg., Vol. I, p. 208; Jones, Wills of Currituck Co. etc., p, 26), 
2 CONT mentions his eldest son Amos; second son Willis; third son Caleb; sons 
2 CONT James, John and Jonas (Jones gives Josias Etheridge, which is probably 
2 CONT correct); daughters Sarah Biggs and Dinah Etheridge (Jones gives the last 
2 CONT child as Dorothy Etheridge, however); wife Eleanor, executrix; test., 
2 CONT Thomas Williams, Solomon Etheridge (H#35) et al. The taxables of Currituck 
2 CONT Co. in 1735 show Amos Etheridge with 1 tithable [sic: taxable], Willis 
2 CONT Etheridge, Sr. with 4 and Eleanor Etheridge with 4. The widow, Eleanor 
2 CONT Etheridge, did not die until 1780. Her will, dated Nov. 30, 1772 and 
2 CONT probated in Currituck Co. Sept. 16, 1780 (Jones, p. 43) mentions her 
2 CONT granddaughters Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary Ann Miller; Sarah Etheridge and 
2 CONT Dinah Miller; grandson Caleb Etheridge; leaves bequests to William Lee and 
2 CONT Joanna Warding; and appoints her son Caleb Etheridge executor. The will 
2 CONT indicates that the youngest daughter was probably named Dinah rather than 
2 CONT Dorothy, and that she had married a Miller.

2 CONT brother). the deed being witnessed by James Etheridge and James G.

2 CONT his wife deeded 100 acres to Thomas Glasgow (D.B. 5, p. 340), probably an 
2 CONT exchange of land, for in the same year, 1788, Thomas Glasgow and Elizabeth 
2 CONT his wife deeded to Amos Etheridge 100 acres adjoining John Etheridge, Jr.

2 CONT the land. In that year there was an agreement betweeen James Etheridge, 
2 CONT Hollowell Etheridge, Anna King, Samuel Simmons and Mary his wife, and 
2 CONT Jesse Simmons (or perhaps a sale by the other heirs to Jesse Simmons) 
2 CONT regarding the 50 acres, "all the land that formerly belonged to John 
2 CONT Etheridge in that place" (D.B. 7, p. 107). The reference to John Etheridge 
2 CONT in this deed is somewhat ambiguous, for it could hardly have been John, 
2 CONT son of Amos H#127, as the latter left a widow and heirs (see later). It 
2 CONT may refer to John Etheridge H#34, father of Amos H#127. There was another 
2 CONT deed in 1794 from James Etheridge, Anna King, Jesse Simmons, Samuel

2 CONT Etheridge H#97, who witnessed the will and whose wife is otherwise 
2 CONT unknown. That Willis Etheridge H#128 mar- ried one of the daughters seems 
2 CONT certain, for the grandson James Etheridge men- tioned in Isabel Powers's 
2 CONT will, seems certainly to have been his son, James. Willis's wife was 
2 CONT probably Jean Etheridge, mentioned in both wills, as he seems to have had 
2 CONT a daughter named Jean or Jane (see later [i.e., under Willis H#128]). Mary 
2 CONT Etheridge, the third daughter, seems to have been the wife of Willis's

2 CONT son of Marmaduke Etheridge and Abigail Broom Etheridge, was born near 
2 CONT Monroeville, in Monroe Co AL on October 13, 1821. How long they lived 
2 CONT there is not known, but Abigail Broome [sic] Etheridge died there and was 
2 CONT buried there, after which Marmaduke Etheridge moved to Wilcox County, near 
2 CONT Allenton, AL, necessarily between Oct. 13, 1821, the date of John 
2 CONT Etheridge's birth, and August 1829, the date of Marmaduke Etheridge's 
2 CONT death. At the age of eight years, John Etheridge had been orphaned by the 
2 CONT deaths of both his mother and his father, and his elder brother, Mark 
2 CONT Ethridge, made guardian by the Orphan's Court of Wilcox Co AL (Probate 
2 CONT Court Record Book 2, p. 156). However, his sister, Sarah, who was near the 
2 CONT same age and a friend of Ann Maranda Davidson, was said to have had a 
2 CONT great deal of influence on his early life, even to his marriage. John 
2 CONT Ethridge and Ann Maranda Davidson, daughter of Jacob and Eliza David- son, 
2 CONT were married August 27, 1840 (the John Etheridge and W.S.H. White family 
2 CONT Bibles). They acquired two acres of land and a residence in Section 10, 
2 CONT Town- ship 13 North, Range 10 East, in what was then Warrenton Beat, 
2 CONT Dallas Co AL (now Richmond Beat), just off State Highway 43, between Selma 
2 CONT and Camden, and northeast of the old colonial home of Mark Etheridge. All 
2 CONT but two of the chil- dren were born in Alabama. In a family record in the 
2 CONT John Ethridge family Bible is the notation, "John Ethridge, Richmond, 
2 CONT Ala., April 12, 1848." The exact date the John Ethridge family moved to 
2 CONT Mississippi is not known. It is certain they were living in Dallas Co AL 
2 CONT on June 8, 1856, the date of William Nathaniel Ethridge's (I) birth. (John 
2 CONT Ethridge family bible and 1950 census). An indenture made January 6, 1857, 
2 CONT recorded in Dallas Co AL on Feb- ruary 14, 1857, showing John Ethridge, of 
2 CONT Mississippi, a party thereto, makes it certain that the John Ethridge 
2 CONT family moved to Mississippi between June 8, 1856 and February 14, 1857 
2 CONT (see also Record Book N, p. 493; Record Book N, p. 822; and Record Book R, 
2 CONT p. 821; land records of Dallas Co AL). From Alabama, the John Ethridge 
2 CONT family moved to what is known as old Mar- ion, about six or seven miles 
2 CONT northeast of Meridian, Lauderdale Co MS, and re- mained there at least 
2 CONT until the Civil War started. Records show that John Eth- ridge was a 
2 CONT member of Pettus Guards at Marion, MS on May 14, 1861, when that Company 
2 CONT was mustered in as Company K, 13th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate 
2 CONT States of America, at Corinth, Mississippi (Records Mississippi Department 
2 CONT of Archives and History and Adjustant General, U.S.A., Washington, DC). 
2 CONT John Ethridge served in the Confederate Army as a scout. Dr. Dunbar Row- 
2 CONT land, Mississippi State Historian, wrote on June 17, 1927, "It gives me 
2 CONT great pleasure to inform you that the names of Frank Ethridge (eldest son 
2 CONT of John Ethridge) and John Ethridge appear on the roll of the 13th 
2 CONT Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A., as privates in Company K." 
2 CONT (Letter to William Nathaniel Ethridge II). On June 23, 1927, Brig. Gen., 
2 CONT Acting Adjutant General, Lutz Wall, wrote, "The records show that John 
2 CONT Ethridge, pvt. Co K, 13th Mississippi Inf., C.S.A., enlisted May 14, 1861 
2 CONT at Corinth, Miss. and on muster roll for Nov. and Dec. 1861 (last on which 
2 CONT borne) is shown present. His name appears on a record of the organization 
2 CONT named above, from May 14, 1861 to Mch. 1, 1865, dated near Richmond, 
2 CONT Viriginia, Mch. 1st, 1865, which record shows him enlist- ed May 14, 1861 
2 CONT at Corinth, Miss., age 40; born in Ala., occupation Mechanic; and under 
2 CONT remarks appears, "discharged February 10, 1862 and re-enlisted Dec. 5, 
2 CONT 1864. The last roll of [on?] file for the above named organization covers 
2 CONT the period July and August [of what year?]. Union Prisoner of War Records 
2 CONT show him captured April 6, 1865 at Harper's Ferry and sent to Point 
2 CONT Lookout, Md., and released at that place, on Oath of Allegiance, June 11, 
2 CONT 1865." On his return from the war, John Ethridge went into the roadway 
2 CONT department of the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad Company, 
2 CONT now a part of the Southern Railway System, at Meridian. His service with 
2 CONT the railroad was rewarded by advancement to an official position. John 
2 CONT Ethridge's children wwere nine in number, five girls and four boys. When 
2 CONT the yellow fever epidemic struck Meridian in 1878, he was one of its early 
2 CONT victims. He died September 27, 1878, and his remains were buried in 
2 CONT McLemore Cem. at Meridian, Mississippi. On the same plot rest the remains 
2 CONT of his wife, his son, Solomon Mark Ethridge, and his daughters, Editha 
2 CONT Abigail Ethridge and Mary Ann Ethridge. Source of information:--the John

1 NOTE Caleb Etheridge (John, Marmaduke, Thomas) was born probably ca. 1725-30 in

2 CONT (probably) Mary Powers, daughter of George and Isabel Powers of Currituck 
2 CONT Co. ( see sec- tion on his brother, Willis Etheridge H#128). Caleb 
2 CONT Etheridge is not shown among the taxables of 1755 in Currituck Co. (Jones, 
2 CONT Wills of Currituck and Dare Cos., N.C., p. 6), and was probably one of the 
2 CONT 4 taxables charged to his mother, Eleanor Etheridge, in that year. He re- 
2 CONT presented Currituck Co. in the Assembly 1760-62 (Colonial and State 
2 CONT Records of North Carolina, Vol. 6, pp. 376, 399, 423, 433, 493, 800. 859). 
2 CONT In 1772 Caleb Etheridge deeded to Amos Etheridge, Jr. (H#287) 119 acres 
2 CONT adjoining John Bal- lance (Currituck Co. D.B. 2, p. 316), and in the same 
2 CONT year he deeded to John Etheridge (H#288) 270 acres on the south-west side 
2 CONT of the north-west branch of Tulls Creek (ibid., p. 325). He was appointed 
2 CONT executor of the will of his mother, Eleanor Etheridge, dated Nov. 30, 1772 
2 CONT and probated in Currituck Co. Sept. 16, 1780 (Jones, op. cit., p. 43); see 
2 CONT also the section on John Ether- idge H#34, his father), but was dead by 
2 CONT 1776, in which year Peter, orphan of Caleb Etheridge, was under the 
2 CONT guardianship of William Powers, and Caleb, orphan of Caleb Etheridge, was 
2 CONT under the guardianship of John Etheridge (i.e., probably John H#132, his 
2 CONT brother; Journal of N.C. Genealogy, Vol. 10, pp. 1284-85). The same 
2 CONT guardianships are shown in 1777, but 1778 shows only Peter, the son Caleb 
2 CONT having probably arrived at maturity in this year, so born ca. 1757 (same 
2 CONT reference). This is confirmed by the fact that Caleb Etheridge is shown in 
2 CONT the married men's poll tax of 1779 (Jones, op. cit., p. 15). indicat- ing 
2 CONT him as a young married man. The 1790 Census of Currituck Co. shows Peter 
2 CONT Etheridge as a young single man, living alone and b. before 1774. Peter 
2 CONT was a legatee of William Powers (his former guardian and probable uncle), 
2 CONT in the latter's will, dated 1795 and probated in Currituck Co. in 1796 
2 CONT (Jones, op. cit., p. 55). Caleb Etheridge, son of Caleb, is probably the 
2 CONT Caleb Etheridge who was Sheriff of Currituck Co. in 1803 and 1805 (D.B. 3, 
2 CONT p. 491; D.B. 9, p. 169). Due to the fact tht she had a son named Caleb, he 
2 CONT may have married Edith Etheridge, daughter of Mathias Etheridge #218a, 
2 CONT about 1778-79. The will of an Edith Etheridge, dated Feb. 14, 1838 and 
2 CONT probated in Currituck Co. in Nov., 1838, mentions her sons Caleb and 
2 CONT Abner; daughters Deborah, Sally, Phoebe, Nancy and Edith Etheridge; and 
2 CONT appoints Mathias Etheridge (presumably her nephew, son of Emsley 
2 CONT Etheridge) as executor; test., Mathias Etheridge, David Etheridge et al. 
2 CONT (Jones, op. cit., p. 44) [is it likely that a woman married to an 
2 CONT Etheridge in 1778-79 would have 5 "old maid" daughters named Etheridge in 
2 CONT 1838?]. Caleb Etheridge H#129 probably owned land in Norfolk Co Va and 
2 CONT appears in suits there against John Pinkerton, Solomon Creekmore, and 
2 CONT Wright Creekmore in 1763 (O.B. 1759-63, pp. 225, 230 and 246); against 
2 CONT Lemuel Murden in 1764 (O.B. 1763-65, p. 72); against John Creekmore in 
2 CONT 1768 (O.B. 1766-68, p. 155); and against Samuel Price in 1769 (O.B. 
2 CONT 1768-71, p. 133). the 1780 tithables of Norfolk Co. "from Great Bridge to 
2 CONT Edmunds Bridge and New Mill Creek" show "Mary Etheridge for Powers 
2 CONT Etheridge 1 tithable." These may very well have been Caleb Etheridge's 
2 CONT widow and eldest son, although we have tentatively identified them 
2 CONT previously with the widow and and son of Moses Etheridge H#226 and treated 
2 CONT Powers Etheridge H#373 as son of Moses (see section on Moses Etheridge 
2 CONT H#226). I am inclined to think now that this Powers Etheridge was a son of 
2 CONT Caleb Etheridge and Mary Powers, probably the eldest son, b. ca. 1755- 56, 
2 CONT so not under guardianship in Currituck Co. in 1776 like his brothers Caleb 
2 CONT and Peter. This view is somewhat confirmed by the fact that on Aug. 15, 
2 CONT 1796, Powers Etheridge was ordered to pay Caleb Powers as a witness by the 
2 CONT Norfolk Co. Court (O.B. 1796-97, p. 67). Caleb Powers was a son of George 
2 CONT and Isabel Powers of Currituck Co NC as was William Powers (d. 1796), the 
2 CONT guardian of Peter Etheridge, orphan of Willis, 1776-78. Two Caleb 
2 CONT Etheridges are shown in the 1790 Census of Currituck Co. not far from each 
2 CONT other. Caleb, Sr. is shown with 1 male b. before 1774, 3 males b. 1774-90, 
2 CONT and 2 females; Caleb, Jr. with 2 males b. before 1774, 2 males b. 1774-90, 
2 CONT and 1 female. One of these was probably Caleb H#240, son of Samuel 
2 CONT Etheridge, the other probably Caleb son of Willis H#129, but it is 
2 CONT uncertain which was senior and which junior.

2 CONT Edith ______. Matthias Etheridge is shown for the first time in 1755 as a 
2 CONT taxable in Currituck Co. (Jones, Abstracts of Currituck and Dare Cos., 
2 CONT N.C., p. 6) and again appears with 1 taxable in the 1779 list (ibid., p. 
2 CONT 11). His will, dated July 30, 1795 and probated Mar. 27, 1798 (ibid., p. 
2 CONT 43), mentions his wife Edy; daughters Edy Etheridge and Keziah; Mary 
2 CONT Etheridge, widow of his son Emsley; and grandson Matthias Etheridge. 
2 CONT Matthias Etheridge is shown in the 1790 Census of Currituck Co. with a 
2 CONT family consisting of 1 male born before 1774 and 2 females; his son Emsley 
2 CONT is shown nearby with 1 male b. before 1774 and 1 female. The son Emsley 
2 CONT had obviously died 1790-95, and the grandson, Matthias Etheridge, 
2 CONT mentioned in the will, was probably his son. It looks as though both 
2 CONT daughters of Matthias Etheridge married Etheridge men. On Dec. 22, 1792 
2 CONT Nathan Etheridge gave a bond to Matthias Etheridge, mention being made in 
2 CONT the bond of Matthias's deceased son, "Embley" Etheridge (Currituck Co. 
2 CONT D.B. 6, p. 279). Nathan Etheridge lived mostly in Norfolk Co VA and his 
2 CONT wife was named Keziah. He was apparently a son of Robert Etheridge H#277. 
2 CONT The other daughter, Edith Etheridge, would appear to be identical with an 
2 CONT Edith Etheridge who died in Currituck Co. in 1838. Her will, mentions her 
2 CONT sons Caleb and Abner Ether- idge; daughters Debborah, Sally, Phebee, Nancy 
2 CONT and Edith Etheridge; and ap- points Matthias Etheridge (presumably her 
2 CONT nephew, the son of Emsley Etheridge) her executor. It is uncertain who 
2 CONT Edith's husband was, but judging by her sons' names, he may have been one 
2 CONT of the Caleb Etheridges shown near Matthias in Currituck Co. in the Census 
2 CONT of 1790. Caleb Etheridge, Sr., who is shown right next to Matthias, had a 
2 CONT familu consisting of 1 male b. before 1774, 3 males b. 1774-90, and 2 
2 CONT females. Caleb Etheridge, Jr., shown soon after Caleb, Sr. with no 
2 CONT intervening Etheridges, had a family of 2 males b. before 1774, 2 males b. 
2 CONT 1774-90, and 1 female. The grandson, Matthias Etheridge, son of Ems- ley, 
2 CONT seems to be the Matthias who died in Currituck Co. in 1846. His will, 
2 CONT dated Oct. 14, 1846 and probated in Nov., 1846 (W.B. 4; Jones, p. 80), 
2 CONT men- tions his wife and executor, Amy Etheridge; sons Henry Shaw and 
2 CONT Jerome; and daughter Harriet Foreman. A deed in Norfolk Co. in 1844 refers 
2 CONT apparently to this Matthias Etheridge and his cousin Abner. On April 24, 
2 CONT 1844 Noah McPher- son, for a debt to Matthias Etheridge of Currituck Co 
2 CONT NC, made a deed of trust to Henry Wilson for land in Norfolk Co. adjoining 
2 CONT Matthias and Abner Etheridge (Norfolk Co. D.B. 70, p. 343). The land books 
2 CONT of Norfolk Co. show Matthias Etheridge "of North Carolina" as the owner of 
2 CONT 60 acres 1825-31. It looks as though Matthias's mother, Mary Etheridge, 
2 CONT wife of Emsley, may have been a McPherson. Noah McPherson, who made the 
2 CONT mortgage in 1844, was a son of Andrew McPherson, whose will, dated Feb. 
2 CONT 29, 1816 and probated June 17, 1816 (Norfolk Co. W.B. 4, p. 240), mentions 
2 CONT his sons Noah, Arthur and Jesse McPherson, "and Dempsey McPherson and 
2 CONT Polly Etheridge"; Lydia Etheridge et al being witnesses. Andrew's father, 
2 CONT Daniel McPherson, died in Norfolk Co. in 1799, and he, too, had a daughter 
2 CONT Mary Etheridge. Daniel's will, dated Oct. 9, 1794 and probated May 20, 
2 CONT 1799 (w.B. 3, p. 215), mentions his son Andrew; daughters Lydia Butt and 
2 CONT Mary Etheridge; and son Henry; Josiah and Caleb Etheridge and William Mc- 
2 CONT Pherson being witnesses. The Mary Etheridge of the last will may very well 
2 CONT have been Emsley Etheridge's wife. On May 11, 1809 George McPherson of 
2 CONT Curri- tuck Co NC made a deed of gift to his nieces, Anna, Jesse and Mora 
2 CONT Etheridge (Currituck Co. D.B. 10, p. 46). The George McPherson mentioned 
2 CONT here does not connect with the McPhersons above apparently, but his deed 
2 CONT shows another McPherson-Etheridge connection.
