1 NOTE I remember Dad talking of Ho-boing on the trains. He was in his 50's when I was
2 CONT born and fell at work. Dad then stayed home and Mom worked in the fields with
2 CONT us kids. Dad was famous for his one pot meals. One big pot and anything he had
2 CONT to put into the pot was dinner, with a big hocake, or if Mom was not to tired a
2 CONT big pan of biscuits. No one that I know could make biscuits with a thick brown
2 CONT crust and so light and fluffy on the inside. On Sunday mornings she would make
2 CONT Chocolate Gravy to go with the biscuits. (Sometimes Mom used grapefruit to make
2 CONT her biscuits.

1 NOTE I remember mom as a caretaker of people. She helped me when my children were
2 CONT born she helped my brothers and sisters with their children at times. She
2 CONT helped Aunt Enda when her husband died. She helped take care of her mother at
2 CONT Uncle Coy's in Ga and then returned to take care of Aunt Rannie at Uncle Coy's
2 CONT some years later. When there was a need she just packed up her cloths and came
2 CONT to help asking not a penny in return. She cared for her husband Charlie untill
2 CONT it became impossible and he had to be in the hospital. He was 25 years older
2 CONT than her. It is to Lillie Mae Miles James that this work is dedicated.
1 NOTE Mom never learned to drive a car, many times over the years we tried to teach
2 CONT her to drive, she was only four feet, eleven inches tall.  Mom never could get
2 CONT the stick shit and the cluch going at the same time. Anyway she road the bus
2 CONT many times from Florida to Michigan, to North Florida and back to Tampa.  One
2 CONT time she became stranded in a snow strom and spent the night with the local
2 CONT police until my brother Jimmie could get there to rescue her.  Jimmie said
2 CONT he worried all the way from his home, but when he got there Mom was having a
2 CONT blast at the police station.
1 NOTE In her last years of life Mom discovered the airplane and loved to fly. She
2 CONT always looked forward to her flights from Michigan to Florida. Mom died a few
2 CONT days before she was to fly to Florida, but she got that last flight in as her
2 CONT funeral was to be in Florida.

2 CONT William James.  I checked #9 and #10 and they are from Larkinsville, Jackson Co
2 CONT , and Blountsville, Blount Co.  The other 8 were in units which didn't have any
2 CONT men from Barbour Co.  I used Willis Brewer's "Alabama, Her History, Resources,
2 CONT War Record, and Public Men From 1540-1872."  This book was published in 1872
2 CONT and reprinted in 1975.  The War Record is quite accurate and gives the
2 CONT regiment
2 CONT or organization, officers of the rank of Captain and above and the counties
2 CONT from which the companies making up the unit were from.  I did check the first 2
2 CONT men: #1 had no enlistment location given;  #2 enlisted at Guntersville,
2 CONT Marshall Co.  I didn't check for the Wm B. or similar middle initials.  The
2 CONT reason I picked William Henry James is the 39th Al.  It was organized by Col.
2 CONT and later Gen. Henry D Clayton of Clayton, Barbour Co Al., and had men from
2 CONT across the southeast counties of Al.  In particular my Searcys were all in this
2 CONT unit.  Now Wm H James enlisted at Eufaula march 18, 1862 according to a muster
2 CONT roll paying him for service March thru June 30, 1862.  the next record shows
2 CONT him present at the muster for Sept and Oct 1863.  There was no additional
2 CONT information.  Some of my Searcys enlisted at Lawrenceville and others enlisted
2 CONT at Eufaula.

1 NOTE William Miles Jr was possibly a brother of Thomas Miles b 1765/1775, who was
2 CONT probably the father of John/Jonathan A Miles b 1800, based on the fact that
2 CONT William Miles Jr and his family lived in the same area of SC, that is, what is
2 CONT now lower Florence Co  and upper Willaimsburg and Clarendon Counties SC.
1 NOTE The following reconstruction of the family is based on Williamsburg Co probte
2 CONT records, censuses of 1790 to 1910, cemetery gravestones, and some newspaper
2 CONT obituaries, hence, complete accuracy and completeness cannot be vouched for.
1 NOTE William Miles Jr was the head of a family in the 1820 and 1830 census of
2 CONT Williamsburg Co SC.  In the 1840 and 1850 censuses, his wife Nancy headed the
2 CONT family, so it can be assumed that William died between 1830 to 1840.  Next door
2 CONT neighbors were families headed by Benjamin Miles, Allen Miles Jesse Miles,
2 CONT which based on our experience as to census, indicates that they were all
2 CONT related.  How related we do not yet know.
1 NOTE William Miles Jr father, prob William Miles Sr, but otherwise not identified.
2 CONT A petition was filed in Williamsburg Co Probate Court in 1857 to sell or divide
2 CONT a small tract of land which William Miles Jr had. At that time, heirs were his
2 CONT wife Nancy and his children Benjanin, Josiah, Elizabeth "Betsy"(Mrs John
2 CONT McKenzie), Sarah (Mrs Kennedy Parker), Leonard, Ann (Mrs Spies Miles), Wright,
2 CONT and Mason (Mrs John Collins).

1 NOTE      Willoughby Miles was a tall, thin man.  Willoughby had a beard in the
2 CONT picture and was a very pleasant man to look upon.  According to the people in
2 CONT Jackson County, Florida, Willoughby had a falling out with his brother William
2 CONT M. Miles.  I have not been able to find out just what the argument was about.
2 CONT William M. Miles was living in Walton County, Florida in 1880.
2 CONT      There is a creek in Jackson Coounty, that in the late 1880's had a large
2 CONT area just right for swimming.  This swimming hole was called the Willoughby
2 CONT Hole.  I can imagine a lot of reasons for this, but the facts are not known at
2 CONT this time.  Since the creek ran through Willoughby Miles property we assume
2 CONT this was the

1 NOTE   James James later married Sarah.  She died in 1821 and he in 1829.  Their
2 CONT graves are in the Welsh Tract Meeting House Burying Ground.  Their grandson,
2 CONT Phillip James was the first minister of the Welsh Neck Baptist Church in what
2 CONT is now Society Hill, SC.  Although, Gregg lists only three children for James
2 CONT James, Esquire, the leader of the colony to SC, this is incorrect.  Sarah
2 CONT Wilds, at her death, is listed as the daughter of Mr. James James.  If you are
2 CONT going by the size of King's Grants, Thomas was probably the oldest, with
2 CONT Daniel, Phillip and Abel, as His sons coming in that order.  Mary James was the
2 CONT wife of Samuel Wild.  David was the only other James and he came from Wales.
2 CONT "David James and his wife Elinorwas recieved by verture of a letter from
2 CONT Mountgamain, Nov 3 1733".  Dismissed to SC April 30 1737 (Welsh Tract Baptist
2 CONT Meeting pp 12-16, 19,21,22,43, 83-85).  Others from the family remained in
2 CONT Penn.  The older Howel never left the Quaker Faith - Samuel's membershipis not
2 CONT known.
2 CONT   There are many documents about The Welsh Tract group that organized into a
2 CONT church while still in Wales,  coming first to Pennepeck (now Lower Dunlin)
2 CONT Although they took communion with the Baptist while there but never joined them
2 CONT as their beliefs differed.  John James and wife Susannah joined their group
2 CONT while at Pennepeck.  She was the daughter of Penn's Secretary and was left 300
2 CONT acres in the area close to Iron Hill.  (Will of Phillip Theador Rehnman -dated
2 CONT 26th 10th mo 1687, Philadelphia, Penn.)  They lie with sons of their children
2 CONT in the church graveyard.
2 CONT   The elder James and wife were recieved by baptism into the church in 1708,
2 CONT Mary in 1712,  Daniel and Phillip in 1719, Thomas in 1724 and Abelin 1720.
2 CONT Their wives names are also listed to year.

1 NOTE   From the records of the church you can see that Benjamin was a leader, but at
2 CONT one time was excommunicated for absenting himself from his place in the church.
2 CONT This was temporary as he was later recieved back into the church, and Pugh
2 CONT makes many references to his generosity to the church, and the pastor.  Pugh
2 CONT tells of Benjamin's Illness and his many visits to see him.  (Cashaway Minutes
2 CONT and Pugh's Diary, SC Caroliniana Library, Columbia, SC).
2 CONT   Benjamin fought in the only conflict with the Indians in SC.  The Cherokee
2 CONT Expedition to Ft. Prince George, 1759, under his cousin Peter Kolb.  Although
2 CONT so many records have been destroyed by fire at Charleston and later by fire at
2 CONT Darlington, the writer was able to find  the following at the Charleston Co
2 CONT courthouse -(then Craven Co). Vol 95, p 163 A to J, the following:  "Citation
2 CONT granted to Thomas James of St. David's Parish to adminster on the estate  of
2 CONT Benjamin James late of the Parish afore-said deceased, as next of kin.  To be
2 CONT in the Parish Church of St. David and returned certified, Feb 8 1774.
2 CONT (Althouogh Benjamin Had children, the dictionary lists the father as the first
2 CONT next of kin.)  We believe he was a member of the Sons of Liberty, although this
2 CONT could have been his son, as there is no distinction made between the different
2 CONT Benjamin's except in the church minutes and Pugh's diary.  His father, Thomas,
2 CONT was very active in the affairs of the community,  although he was getting up in
2 CONT yers.  (Many references to Thomas are in Gregg and in the Welsh Neck Church
2 CONT Minutes.)

1 NOTE   Benjamin Jr. fought in the Revolution. His wife was Sarah and we are not
2 CONT postive of her last name.  He was very active in the church and civic affairs.
2 CONT He was member of St. David's Society and later, St. David's Academy (St. David,
2 CONT Patron of the Welsh as were his grandfather Thomas.
2 CONT   Pugh's Diary seems to be a record of the James family, as he visited them and
2 CONT was visited in return, so often.  Benjamin, Sr., both in South Carolina
2 CONT Baptist, Towsend and in Pugh's Diary, was known as "Big James".  Sep 26 1771 -
2 CONT "Big James" "sent to me, to come for my mare." Pugh was walking until then.
2 CONT 1772, Feb 12 th from Pugh - "Funeral for Samuel James, Tuesday at home, not
2 CONT sick."  "Big James" came here.  1779, June 18th Benjamin James here all night."
2 CONT  In his journal, Nov 9th, in reference to the seige of Savannah, Mr. Pugh
2 CONT wrote,  "We lost many youth" and on the 21st preached - (Job xiv: 1,2).  A
2 CONT funeral for those lost at Savannah, 9th of Oct last, from these parts."
2 CONT   The James as well as the others of Welsh orgin were staunchly for
2 CONT independence and gave of their money, service and many lives to the revolution.

1 NOTE More battles were fought in SC than any other state and because of the ease of
2 CONT travelling on the Big Peedee, many suffered more than others. At one time the
2 CONT old and the young fled to NC and got Sumter to lead them.  This group furnished
2 CONT their own horses and provisions.  Amoung these were Benjamin James Jr., and
2 CONT family.
2 CONT   After the war Benjamin James Jr moved to Georgia, where his daughter Sarah
2 CONT and Issac Dubose, her husband, had preceded him. Issac dubose fought in the
2 CONT Revolution, but was now a Deputy Survey General living in Wilkes Co Ga.
2 CONT   The book "Some Early Tax Digests in Georgia" lists Benjamin James Jr., and
2 CONT his son-in-law Issac Dubose; both were given grants in Burke Co Ga., this was
2 CONT later Warren Co Ga, and then Jefferson Co Ga.  Benjamin James Jr's property is
2 CONT easy to find, joining Fenn's land on one side and Moses Newton's on the other.
2 CONT This is near Grange Ga., on the road to Sandersville at Fenn's Bridge.  Jethro
2 CONT Vinning, a friend of Benjamin's came from SC in 1785 and started a church known
2 CONT as Vining's Meeting House, because it was flooded so much it was moved to higher
2 CONT ground and renamed Providence Baptist Church, the minutes were lost or
2 CONT destroyed until 1808. Vining stayed there until the death of his wife then
2 CONT moved to Warren Co Ga and started another church. Many cousins of these James
2 CONT came to Ga.

1 NOTE   Benjamin James son, Benjamin, stayed in Cheraw District, SC, for some time.
2 CONT He was the only Benjamin James in the 1790 census.  Welsh Neck Minutes for Dec.
2 CONT 5, 1778 say "At our monthly meeting Benjamin James and wife Jane, brought a
2 CONT letter from Cashaway Church and were recieved as members of this Church."
2 CONT Benjamin and John, his other son, came to Ga shortly before their father's death
2 CONT in 1800. Benjamin James wife, Jane, we think maiden name was Harry, as there
2 CONT Harry's in the church and Harry was a common given name in the family after
2 CONT this.
2 CONT We don't know whether John married in SC or not but if he did, she died, as he
2 CONT remarried Polly Parish, Nov 2, 1809 (page 31, in first book of marriages) in
2 CONT Warren Co Ga.Their father died in 1800, naming all his children and his older
2 CONT son Benjamin, his son-in-law, Isaac Dubose, and his neighbor, Moses Newton, as
2 CONT administrators of his estate.  You will find a copy of his will at the
2 CONT Jefferson Co Courthouse, Ga.  Sarah died July 5, 1802, and Isaac Dubose was
2 CONT administrator of her estate.
2 CONT   Soon after this the family began to spread.  Benjamin to Augusta, where he
2 CONT and son, Francis Marion James, were builders of roads.  In 1811 he went back to
2 CONT Darlington Co and fought in the war of 1812, but was back in Augusta after
2 CONT this.  His son Francis Marion James, has a grant in Wilkinson Co Ga but
2 CONT courthouse records were burned for this period.  We don't know if Francis
2 CONT Marion James took up the grant but if he did there is a probability that he
2 CONT died there before the 1820 census.

1 NOTE   His son, Benjamin James the Fourth, went to Beaufort, SC, where he married
2 CONT Sarah Riggins.  After the birth of his first child, we find him in the 1820
2 CONT census in Savannah, Ga.  He later moved to Liberty Co, Ga. and lastly to what
2 CONT is now Pierce Co Ga.,where he was a respected and valuable citizen.  A Church
2 CONT was named for him and he and his wife, Sarah are buried there.
2 CONT   John and the Duboses came to Jones Co, Ga. Some of the family stayed but the
2 CONT Duboses moved on, first to Talbot Co.,Ga and finally landed in Alabama, where
2 CONT Isaac Dubose died leaving a will in Dallas Co. Selma, Alabama. The descendants
2 CONT of Sarah James Dubose and John James have done unusually well, also.
2 CONT   There have been many prominent citizens who have decend from this line.  The
2 CONT writer hears from them in many arears of the United States.  They may not have
2 CONT continued to be baptists but they have established churches and helped to
2 CONT support them where-ever they went and have a right to be proud of their
2 CONT heritage, as they have been blessed in all their undertakings.

2 CONT listed as dead from measles and both in the same report.  John James as father

1 NOTE Ben Brigham had a remarkable memory; his knowledge of history and public
2 CONT affairs and his accurate recollection of dates and events were extraordinary.
2 CONT His mind was keen and active until the time of his death at the age of nearly 91
2 CONT years.
2 CONT All that he knew about his family history had been learned from his father,
2 CONT Emerald Brigham, who had himself left his home in Massachusetts while a very
2 CONT young man.  But a comparison of his MEMORIS with historical records show only
2 CONT two discrepancies.  According to Ben, his father Emerald was born May 1, 1793.
2 CONT This is also the date recorded in the family Bible of Emerald's daughter,
2 CONT Temperance Brigham Stubbs.  But the Vital Statistics of Gardner, Mass, recorded
2 CONT Emerald Brigham born May 1, 1790.
2 CONT The Family Register of Early Puritan Families shows that:
2 CONT             "Thomas Brigham, aged 32 years, embarked at London
2 CONT              for New England, April 18, 1635, in the ship
2 CONT              Susan & Ellyne, Edward Payne, Master."
2 CONT Seth Brigham, Ben's grandfather, was in the Battle of Saritoga, at the
2 CONT surrender of Burgoyne in the Revolutionary War.  Emerald was Seth's son.
2 CONT Emerald with his brother Emmethest left home when he was about 18 years old,
2 CONT went to Florida, and worked at ship-building on the St. Johns River.  He took
2 CONT part in the Spanish and Indian disturbances during the War of 1812.  The two
2 CONT brothers had a disagreement and separated.  Emerald Brigham during the
2 CONT remainder of his life tried to locate Emmethest, but never heard form him
2 CONT again.  Emerald married, first a girl in Florida whose last name was Mott.
2 CONT After her death he married Nancy Hardison, whose father was a sea captain.
1 NOTE Emerald moved his family to Georgia during the Seminole Indian Wars, where they
2 CONT lived until 1851.  The family then went to Alabama, evidently just across the
2 CONT Chattahoochee River--From the present town of Cuthbert, Georgia, to that of
2 CONT Eufaula, Alabama.
1 NOTE In 1853 the Brighams, with the exception of the two named above, all came to
2 CONT Texas.  The Brigham history from this time on is closely related to that of two
2 CONT other prominent Georgia families--Griers and Stubbses.  Two Grier brothers, Flex
2 CONT and Eli, had married sisters--Ellen and Maria Stubbs--and had come to Texas
2 CONT during the time of the Texas Republic, in 1839.  Ellen and Maria had two
2 CONT brothers--Lemuel and Mathew Stubbs--who had married sisters, daughters of
2 CONT Emerald Brigham.  In 1851 Lemuel Stubbs and his wife, Winifred Brigham Stubbs,
2 CONT joined his sisters and their families in Texas--the families of Flix and Eli
2 CONT Grier.  In 1853 Mathew Stubbs and his wife Elizabeth Brigham Stubbs, also came
2 CONT to Texas.  At the same time, Emerald Brigahm and all of his family except the
2 CONT son and daughter named above likewise came to Texas.  From then on the three
2 CONT families Brighams, Stubbses, and Griers--developed into somewhat of a large
2 CONT Clan!
1 NOTE Emerald Brigham died in 1863, in Dewitt Co Tx, near the old town of Clinton.
2 CONT He is buried near the home of Elias Wallace who married Louise Stubbs,
2 CONT Emerald's grandfaughter.  His 2nd wife Nancy Hardison Brigham, moved to Blanco,
2 CONT Tx., when her son Benjamin and her daughter Temperance Brigham Stubbs went
2 CONT there.  She was born 1806 in Fl/Ga, and died in Blanco, Tx., in 1890. She is
2 CONT buried in Blanco, Texas.

1 NOTE This is to acknowledge your letter of March 10th concerning the study being
2 CONT made of discharges from the Baptist Orphanage at Troy.
1 NOTE I located Henry Swanson Toole in Eufaula.  He is a brother of John Franklin
2 CONT Toole and Ella Toole, whose schedules you sent to me to be filled out.  Henry
2 CONT Swanson Toole stated that he does not know where his brother, John Franklin is.
2 CONT The last information he had from him was that he was in Athens GA.  He also
2 CONT stated that John Franklin Toole had two families.  Mrs Elsie Toole, his first
2 CONT wife, and five children live in Sturgis, Mississippi.  John Franklin separated
2 CONT from this family years ago.  His second wife, Mrs Inez Toole, and one little
2 CONT boy, lives in Gulfport, Mississippi.  John Franklin is also separated from this
2 CONT wife.  John Franklin is a World War I Veteran and was wounded in France and
2 CONT draws a compensation of $30.00 per month.  Henry Swanson Toole stated that John
2 CONT Franklin moved around a good deal and did not stay in one place very long.
1 NOTE Henry Swanson Toole Stated that his sister, Ella Toole, was Mrs Ella Cook and
2 CONT had one child.  She lives in Montgomery.  Her husband is a candy salesman.  He
2 CONT did not know Mrs Cook's address.  Mr Henry Swanson Toole stated that his mother
2 CONT died first and soon after, his father.  There were five children, Henry Swanson
2 CONT Toole, Hattie Lee Toole, Hettie C Toole, along with the two younger children,
2 CONT John Franklin Toole and Ella Toole.  All were sent to the Baptist Orphanage
2 CONT which was the located in Evergreen.  The sister Hattie Lee, is not living.  The
2 CONT sister, Hettie C, is Mrs Andrew Suggs and lives in Ozark.  Her husband works in
2 CONT the cotton mill.  Mr Henry Swanson is quite a dissipated man and has no
2 CONT employment.  His wife works in the cottonmill and supports the family.

2 CONT he remembers him talking of the Civil War and of some battles, one time they
2 CONT were being chased by the Union Soliders and they ran their horses across a log
2 CONT over a ravine one man tried to walk his horse across and he fell in and was
2 CONT killed, the Union Soliders turned away and the CSA got away.

1 NOTE      The Miles Elementary School was named in memory and in tribute to Frank D.
2 CONT Miles, who had dedicated thirty years of his life to education.  Mr. Miles
2 CONT served as a staff member in the capacity of Assistant Director of
2 CONT Administration.  He had attended the university of Florida.  University of
2 CONT North Carolina and George Peabody College.  The educational contributions and
2 CONT values given to the field of education by Frank Miles are many and varied and
2 CONT the spirit of his dedications linger within the halls and classrooms of the new
2 CONT building.
1 NOTE      We are happy to dedicate the Miles Elementary School because of the find
2 CONT cooperation of its patrons and the pride we hold for its principal. All these
