The obituary of 2 CONT Robert Lowe, son of James Lowe, states: "that he was born in 2 CONT Farcuier County, Virginia, in 1803," so this establishes the 2 CONT place of residence of James Lowe at that time. 2 CONT In Washington Co., Ohio History, published in 1881, compiled 2 CONT by H.Z. williams on page 686, is this statement: "James Lowe 2 CONT was another settler who hailed from Virginia, He married 2 CONT Rosanna Hawback (Hayback)". 2 CONT The Military Records of James Lowe shows he recived a grant 2 CONT of land from the Goverment consisting of over two hundred 2 CONT acres on Darby Creek, between the Little Miami and Scioto 2 CONT rivers. According to family records James Lowe was one of 2 CONT the first settlers of a little place named Olive. only a 2 CONT mile or two from where Caldwell, the county seat of Noble Co 2 CONT Ohio, now stands. The year was 1806. He built a cabin on 2 CONT land of Silas Thorla, and this was the home of James Lowe 2 CONT until he died in 1819. 2 CONT James Lowe was first buried in the Olive cemetery, but his 2 CONT body was later removed to the farm of his son, Robert, and 2 CONT buried in the Lowe family cemetery, which is on a hillside 2 CONT on the old Robert Lowe farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT JAMES LOWE - REVOLUTIONANY SOLDIER 2 CONT 2 CONT Reported by Alton O. Thomas, Washington, D.C. 2 CONT 2 CONT James Lowe (or Low) was a private in Captain Silas Jones 2 CONT Company, in the 13th Virginia Regiment, Commanded by Colonel 2 CONT William Russell in September, 1777. 2 CONT At Germantown, on October 4th, 1777, he disappeard from his 2 CONT company, and was believed to have been killed or captured. 2 CONT However he was back with his regiment in February, 1778, at 2 CONT Valley Forge, as shown by a company pay-roll. 2 CONT In the same year he was at Fort Pitt-Pittsburg, with Captain 2 CONT John Gibson's Company, 13th Virginia Regiment, Commanded by 2 CONT Col. John Gibson's (sic). The next record of him, shows him 2 CONT in 1780-81 in Captain Benjamin Bigg's Company, 7th Virginia 2 CONT Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Gibson. Ohio. was born in Forquire county in 2 CONT East Virginis, in 1803, and died Jan. 22, 1891, aged 87 2 CONT years 4 months and 25 days. He came with his parents to 2 CONT Morgan - now Noble - county, in 1806. His father built a 2 CONT cabin on the land of Silas Thorla, now owned by Benjamin 2 CONT Thorla, but a few rods east of the present residence of Mr. 2 CONT Thorla where he died in 1819, when Robert commenced the 2 CONT battle of life for himself. But one of the many comrades and 2 CONT associates of his boyhood is living to tell of the 2 CONT adventures, the privation or the joys incident to a frontier 2 CONT life, that one is the venerable Benjamin Thorla, a resident 2 CONT of the village of Olive. 2 CONT In 1824, Mr. Lowe married Rebecca Boyd. To them was 2 CONT born eight sons and four daughters, of which number two sons 2 CONT and three daughters together their mother, have gone to the 2 CONT better land. 2 CONT By untiring application to business Mr. Lowe was 2 CONT enabled to buy a farm then an unbroken wilderness, but under 2 CONT his brawny arm and woodman's ax the forest gradually 2 CONT disappeared and wheat fields and meadows appeared in its 2 CONT stead. For 65 years he lived thereon and enjoyed a rural 2 CONT life of prosperity. 2 CONT His life was full of toil, yet he always looked on the 2 CONT sunny side of circumstancrs in business, social or religious 2 CONT life. The tenderest cord of his sympathy and affection was 2 CONT touched by the affliction and error of others. It was truly 2 CONT a pleasure to him to sooth and comfort by word and deed the 2 CONT afflicted, to restore and encourage the erring and 2 CONT unfortunate, and the poor and needy always found a friend in 2 CONT him. He was a kind and dutiful husband and father, a lover 2 CONT of home, family and associations. 2 CONT He gave to each of his children a competence to start them 2 CONT in life when they left his home for one of their own. On day 2 CONT of funeral an intimate acquaintance and venerable christian 2 CONT gentleman said "It becomes me in respect to the departed 2 CONT brother to say that I have known him for 65 years, and 2 CONT always found him full of sunshine, genial and instructive in 2 CONT conversations, always ready to defend truth, integrity and 2 CONT religion with ease and fluency". It was my privilege to be 2 CONT present when he was converted which was brought about by the 2 CONT influence of the M.E. She married Mapoleon 2 CONT Bonaparte Stretchberry, Nov. 20th, 1828 at McConnellsville, 2 CONT Morgan Co. Ohio, at the age of 14 years. Her education was 2 CONT limited of course, but when she made application for a 2 CONT pension in 1882, although she made the statement that she 2 CONT had "forgotten" how to read and write, the examiner made the 2 CONT statement in his report, "that Mrs. Strechberry was an 2 CONT unusually intelligent woman." We do know she gave birth to 2 CONT 15 children, 11 of them grew to adulthood, and all of them a 2 CONT credit to her. We know she sent 5 sons off to fight for 2 CONT their country, and her husband as well. What she did, and 2 CONT how she managed to care for the six children at home, during 2 CONT their absence is not recorded, but it must have taken great 2 CONT couragr to face life under these conditions in these pioneer 2 CONT days. 2 CONT Mary (Lowe) Stretchberry, in spite of hardships and hard 2 CONT work, lived to be 80 years old. Wilson was born in 2 CONT the year 1824, Nov. 11th, in what was then Morgan Co., a few 2 CONT miles south of Sharon, Ohio. His boyhood days were spent on 2 CONT the farm. When a young man he voluntered as a soldier in the 2 CONT Army of the United States in the war with Mexico. 2 CONT He went in company with J.A. Marquis, Nathaniel Cain and 2 CONT others as far as Cincinnati, Ohio., and while there being 2 CONT trained in the tactics of war, he was honorably discharged 2 CONT and returned home. He afterwards received a land warrant for 2 CONT 160 acres of land. In the year 1843, he was joined in 2 CONT marriage to Sarah J. Pidcock, daughter of John Pidcock. They 2 CONT had ten children, seven boys and three girls, two of these 2 CONT children had preceeded him to the spirit land, one boy and 2 CONT one girl. 2 CONT In the rebellion of '62 or '63 he was drafted into the 2 CONT services of the United States , he was taken to 2 CONT Uhrichsville, Ohio., to be examined, but by reason if his 2 CONT eyes not being good he again returned to his home in Sharon, 2 CONT Ohio., where he then lived. He shortly after left Sharon and 2 CONT and with his family moved to the southern part of Noble Co. 2 CONT where he resided untill his death. He leaves aged parents, 2 CONT wife and children, brothers and sister and a large circle of 2 CONT friends to mourn his departure to that land from which none 2 CONT return. He was a kind hearted husband, a good neighbor, and 2 CONT a friend to all. New Year's day he was brought back for 2 CONT interment in the family grave yard on the hill where a large 2 CONT concourse of friends and neighbors had assembled to pay 2 CONT their respects to the departed. He lived and labored and 2 CONT honored member of this organization till death. In the fall 2 CONT of 1906 he left his farm and moved to Sharon. He was taken 2 CONT sick with Bright's disease in Dec. 1914 and was a constant 2 CONT sufferer untill death released him. 2 CONT The funeral services which were largely attended, were 2 CONT held from the home Saturday morning conducted by Rev. Wm. 2 CONT Starkey of Caldwell in the absence of his own pastor, Rev. 2 CONT Charrock, who was attending Annual Conference, from the text 2 CONT 2nd Tim. 4th Chapter and 7 and 8 verses.
