2 CONT Redware; It fulfilled the many needs about the house and farm; The uses ranged
2 CONT from the unglazed porous ware for flower pots to the liquid proof glazed storage

1 NOTE !BIOGRAPHY: -m; In the 1790's, the area of Bull's Hack (after 1841 it was called
2 CONT Circleville) was thinly settled.  Churches, schools and shops were at a
2 CONT distance. No business was carried on for miles around, except the pottery,
2 CONT which was erected by David and operated by him for many years.  It was one of
2 CONT the most extensive branches of business in the country.  His buildings were
2 CONT burned 3 times, and after the 3rd loss he moved his family to Waverly and the
2 CONT business was never re-established.

2 CONT 2-acre parcels). David wrote a letter to David W. (son) on 25 July, 1849, from
2 CONT "Factory Ville", Tioga Co., NY, now called Waverly.  In Waverly, lived at the
2 CONT first farm on the west side of the road after the corner at Durham's and going
2 CONT south on the west hill in Waverly. David & Lydia are in the Chemung Co. (next
2 CONT to Tioga), Town of Chemung 1850 Census.  The 1855 NY State census lists them in
2 CONT the same place, says they have been residents for 10 yr. & that David was B. in
2 CONT "West Chester" Co., Lydia in Orange Co. They were next dwelling in list to
2 CONT son Charles. Their dau. Dorinda was living with them.  Waverly is situated
2 CONT where Chemung & Tioga Co. meet.
1 NOTE !BIOGRAPHY: $; There is a David Mandeville Pottery Shop, opened July 7, 1987,
2 CONT Old Museum Village of Smith's Clove in Monroe, near Cornwall, NY.  David's
2 CONT business was in Circleville in the town of Wallkill.  "The name of Mandeville
2 CONT was one of the earliest settlers in the Town of Cornwall.  During the 19th
2 CONT Century Cornwall was the center of a fairly large potting & brick making
2 CONT operation. Clays suitable for both brik & pottery were abundant in the
2 CONT vicinity."
1 NOTE !BIOGRAPHY: "Since Mandeville appears in the Orange co. census for the 1st time
2 CONT in 1810, it may be assumed that his kiln was built a few years previously.  By
2 CONT 1810 it was one of the 2 pott works recorded in the county. ...Mandeville &
2 CONT his sons continued to appear in the census through 1840, but by that time the
2 CONT shop had burned & been rebuilt twice. A third fire was too much, & shortly

1 NOTE !BIOGRAPHY: $; The Hill-Hold Museum acquired an important piece of early Orange
2 CONT Co. pottery which had been in possession of a number of noted collectors &
2 CONT dealers for several decades.  "It is a covered jar, about 20 in. tall, made of a
2 CONT substance that ceramicists refer to as 'redware', a fairly fragile type of
2 CONT pottery that has been used for centuries to make a variety of useful
2 CONT vessels. The sloping lid is topped with a rather charming, pagoda-shaped
2 CONT finial; the handles are of twisted rope form; there is a scalloped line incised
2 CONT around the border and, in front, the name 'William', and on the back 'Hurtin'.
2 CONT ...It is, in fact, probably one of the best documented examples of early
2 CONT craftsmanship to appear on the local scene for years.  The jar was made by
2 CONT David Mandeville of Circleville, who is the best recorded of the many local
2 CONT potters who operated in the area during the early 19th century.  And the name
2 CONT incised on the body of the piece is that of Hurtin, owner of a Goshen
2 CONT newspaper originally owned by the potter."

1 NOTE PROBATE: His will was dated September 15, 1696, and proved May 22, 1701.  He
2 CONT calls himself "Jellis Mandeville of Greenwich in city of New York" and the will
2 CONT is signed "Yeelise de Mandeville".  He names wife Elsie, and leaves son Hendrick
2 CONT Mandeville in preference to all other giftes and "in regard of his being my
2 CONT eldest son, all that my farm in Queens Co., in the jurisdiction of Hempstead,"
2 CONT with houses, barns &c.  He leaves son David, the Negro Peter and 50 guilders,
2 CONT and all the rest of his estate to his children.  The will is recorded in New
2 CONT York City and has a coat of arms on the seal (an elaborate and costly cutting,
2 CONT charged with an animal which under magnification resembles a horse rampant, a
2 CONT plumed helmet surmounts the shield, the plumes forming the mantling on either
2 CONT side, there is no crest).
1 NOTE ALIAS: Also called Gilles Jansen (Jansz) Van Garder (referring to being from
2 CONT village of Garderen or Garder, in the Veluwe, in the NW corner of the provience
2 CONT of Holland) on the "de Trouw" passenger list.  Called Aegidius de Mandeville in
2 CONT baptismal records from Holland (Giles is the English translation of Aegidius),
2 CONT witness was Dr. Michael a Mandeville. He was also called at various times
2 CONT Gillis Jansen, Gillis Jantzen.  Signed Yselise de Mandeville in his will.
2 CONT Called Gilles Janszen Mandiviel as member of the New York Dutch Church.
2 CONT Other english translations of the given name are Giles, Yellis, Gellis, Iilles,
2 CONT Jillis, Yelis, Jiles, Gillis.  Also referred to as "seeu" or "DeZeeun" meaning
2 CONT Zeelander.  Named for the Van de Rade family of his grandmother.
1 NOTE IMMIGRATION: Came to USA from Vootbuizen, Netherlands on the ship "de Trouw"
2 CONT HSYB 1902) as Gillis Jansen of Garderen.  Some records say that he came with New
2 CONT York Gov. Peter Stuyvesant (v).  Captain was Jan Jansen Bestevaer.  There are
2 CONT several conflicting dates of emmigration/ immigration.  Most records cite date
2 CONT as February 12, 1659 when he left Holland, 2 yr. after his father's death
2 CONT (fgj-3) or arrived in America (hkw-w). Some records state he left Holland on the
2 CONT "Faith" in 1647 (amx), but this must be error as date is before marriage.
2 CONT He came with his wife and 4 children (age 1 1/2, 5, 6,
2 CONT 9 years). He paid 50 guilders for passage for himself and his wife, 10 guilders
2 CONT for each child or 90 guilders in all. The name of Gillis De Mandeville on the
2 CONT original list of the vessel "Moseman", in April 1659, indicates that he was not
2 CONT a passenger but only a debtor to the Dutch West India Company, for small sum
2 CONT advanced by them (year book of Holland Society, 1902). Look for immigration
2 CONT information Folio 15, Pass N. N., Col. MSS XIV. 88.
1 NOTE CHILDREN: The Media Research Bureau stated he had 7 children (Hendrick, Tryntje,
2 CONT Altje or Heltie, Jan, Gerritje, Grietje, and William).
1 NOTE CONFLICT: Was said to have come to the Netherlands from from Roulen, France.
2 CONT The Holland Society of NY cites at least 3 generations of ancestors in the
2 CONT Netherlands.  A letter from Mrs. Anna Belle Mandeville Lehman of 1959 states
2 CONT that Gillis Jansen De Mandeville fled from Normandy into Holland at the time of
2 CONT the "Nates Order"' about 1640 and married a Dutch girl named Eliza Hendrick.
1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: For "small favor", Peter Stuyvesant gave him a cow. Elsie baked 2
2 CONT loaves of bread with little remaining flour she had, but when she went outside &
2 CONT returned, one was gone. She thought that Indians had taken the bread, but later
2 CONT the Governor gave them 2 fine milk cows, because he had taken the loaf of bread
2 CONT when he stopped by and was hungry (v).  One record says he also gave him the
2 CONT grant of land on the Hudson River extending from Gansevoort St. upwards and
2 CONT including the present Abingdon Square, which was the family burying ground.
2 CONT Part of this land was located in the present Greenwich Village area. (j)

2 CONT corner of the provience; in NY, appears first to have lived Sept 1676 in
2 CONT Flatlands, Brooklyn, Long Island (Nieuw Ammersfoort); some time after this he
2 CONT had land at the foot of 12th Street on North River; by 1680 he was living at
2 CONT the Mandeville Farm in Flatbush, Greenwich Village, Manhatten Island

2 CONT New Amsterdam, the residence was probably near 10th Ave. & 16th St.;

1 NOTE LAND: A Gilles Jansen, in Sept. 1676, was rated for "10 Morgen land" in Nieuw
2 CONT Ammersfoort (Flatlands, Long Island, NY) and lived there for some time.
2 CONT (NY Dutch Marriages 1,61 & 93; doc. Hist. of New York).  He was a gentleman
2 CONT farmer. He must have lived for some time in Long Island because two of his
2 CONT children were born there.
1 NOTE LAND: Next he bought farm at Flatbush, Manhattan Island (Hempstead), New York
2 CONT called "Shappanaconk", "Sappokaniken" or "New Nordwyck" (v says that he recieved
2 CONT it from the Dutch Government, and that is why he came to America). He settled on
2 CONT this farm as a farmer along with the following 30 acres (also referred to as
2 CONT part of "Shappanaconk"). This was north of New Amsterdam, near what is now the
2 CONT foot of 12th St, on the North River. This was probably the land that his will
2 CONT stated that he valued above all his other possessions.  Giles and his
2 CONT descendants continued living here until 1790 (&).
1 NOTE LAND: He recieved a grant of 30 acres in Greenwich (now Greenwich Village), New
2 CONT York, laid out December 5, 1679 and patented December 30, 1680.  The estate
2 CONT was below the present 14th street to 21st street, though not parallel to
2 CONT either, and from the Hudson River to Warren Road. Perhaps Peter Steuvesant gave
2 CONT him this land, as he was a great and warm friend of Giles'(v). May have been
2 CONT called Greenwich, Sappokaniken, Sappanaconk, Shappanaconk, and New Nordwyck as
2 CONT above (kv). In 1686 he was living "above the ancient pond Kalch-hock".  The
2 CONT family burial plot, which was given in perpetuity for that purpose, is now one
2 CONT of the small city parks. (x)
1 NOTE LAND: May 14, 1700, he sold to David Mandeville, probably his son, 53 morgens
2 CONT (126 acres) of land, including Greenwich Bowery, and meadows on the west side of
2 CONT the Hudson River, all apparently then occupied by David. His dwelling was still
2 CONT standing in 1776 (v) but was then removed, the land being required for
2 CONT business purposes (x).
1 NOTE LAND: No lands granted or sold to Yellis de Mandeville rec'd in Flatbush
2 CONT records, but many Dutch patents and Indians' Deeds were destroyed or sent
2 CONT to England after 1664.  No New Amsterdam Records mention him.  Jillis, Elsie
2 CONT and Grietie Mandeviel are listed as living above the ancient pond Kalch-Hock in
2 CONT 1686. (IX 162 Record, Valentine's History of the City of New York, and map).  He
2 CONT was a farmer.

2 CONT from Rotterdam may have been an early settler of this farm, before patents were
2 CONT made; Jan van Rotterdam was killed in the Indian uprising of 1644 and the land
2 CONT vacated to the government; the lower tract became vested in Allard Anthony &
2 CONT Paulus Leendertsen van der Grift, in 1662; both men were burgomasters of New
2 CONT Amsterdam; The Burgomasters' Bouwery was between 40 & 50 morgens, extended
2 CONT north along the river to the Clapboard fly, near 29th St.; it was the land
2 CONT between the Burgomasters' Bouwery, one the Weylandt patent, the Fitzroy Road,

2 CONT House farm; between which there is to be left a Highway, a line being run from
2 CONT the woods SE by E 210 rod in length; the road is never again referred to;
2 CONT surveyed by Mr. Mandeville Aug 30 1764 (1674?) as the south line runs S. 59
2 CONT degrees 30' east 30 chains 88 links (2038.08) to the road; quantity 65 acres &
2 CONT 7/10 ("Plan of a piece of Land at Greenwich Surveyed of Mr. Mandeville, Aug.
2 CONT 30, 1764 (1674?). G. Bancker" in Bancker Coll. NYPL); the land became the
2 CONT Mandeville farm in 1764 (1674?); Jacob Leenderssen Vande Grift to Jillis Jansen,
2 CONT "late of fflatland in the west riding of Yorkeshire upon Long Island, at present
2 CONT of Nortwyck aforementioned", deed dated Jun 21 1679 (Liber Deeds, V: 186,
2 CONT Albany); conveys "a certaine ffarme or Bowery upon this Island Manhatans, not

2 CONT and rector of the Latin Schools".  Was appointed "ordinaris medicus".  First
2 CONT city-physician of Nijemgen.  Through his supervision he improved the practice
2 CONT of medicine there. His practice demanded so much of his time that in 1607 the
2 CONT magistracy asked him to resign as principal of the Latin School in order to
2 CONT devote his entire time to medicine. (gh)
1 NOTE HONORS: September 3, 1617 he & 7 of his children recieved the Burgherright of
2 CONT Nymegen & the next year was honored by being appointed schepen and member of the
2 CONT City Council of the city of his adoption.  When Prince Maurits replaced the
2 CONT magistry, he was assigned alderman in 1618. Marriage banns published Leeuwarden
