1 NOTE Alexander Anderson Petty married Sarah Ann Vaughn and had 11 children.  
2 CONT These Pettys left Pettytown in early years and settled at Coleman, Texas.  
2 CONT It is said that the town of Coleman is built on part of Alexander 
2 CONT Anderson' s farm.  It is also said that he and a man by the name of 
2 CONT Coleman established the first bank in Coleman.  Descendants of this Petty 
2 CONT branch are to be found most all over the country.  Uncle Ance, as his 
2 CONT family called him, is buried beside his wife in the Coleman Cemetery.

2 NOTE After the death of his wife, Elizabeth Dawson Petty, John made his home 
3 CONT with his son, Sam Petty, who lived near his old homestead.  It is said 
3 CONT that he often expressed the desire to die with his boots on, so one night 
3 CONT as he prepared to go to bed he had just started to pull off the first boot 
3 CONT when he fell over dead.  His old black walnut four-poster bad is still in 
3 CONT the possession of the Sam Petty family.  He is buried in the Pettytown 
3 CONT cemetery.

1 NOTE John Petty moved from Tennessee to the Ozark region of Arkansas and 
2 CONT Missouri about the year of 1835.  Some say that he fought in the Texas 
2 CONT Revolution.  If so, that year would have been the logical time to have 
2 CONT left his family in Arkansas and his coming on to Texas.  The home county 
2 CONT of the Pettys in Tennessee was Hardin County which joined the home County 
2 CONT of Dave Crockett. The exact date that John Petty brought his family to 
2 CONT Bastrop County, Texas, is not known but it is believed to have been before 
2 CONT 1850.  The 1860 Census taken from Bastrop County gave the real estate of 
2 CONT John Petty as being worth about $1,500, which was quite a bit for that 
2 CONT early year.  We do know that he settled several of this children, 
2 CONT including two or three widows, around him.  Such land could have been a 
2 CONT grant from the State if he did fight for Texas' independence.

2 CONT John Petty made his living in the early years by freighting lumber, etc., 
2 CONT from South Texas.  This he did by oxcart.  Many of the old homes in 
2 CONT Pettytown were built of lumber that he had brought into the country that 
2 CONT way.

2 NOTE The story of Joel Petty's death has been remembered and told down through 
3 CONT the generations.  He was doctoring what he thought to be just a sick dog 
3 CONT and it bit him.  The dog later died of rabies.  In that early time there 
3 CONT had been no vaccine dsicovered for rabies.  Joel Petty had his fmaily to 
3 CONT chain him to a tree in the yard where he ate and slept.  One day when they 
3 CONT carried him food he told them to set it down and get away from him as he 
3 CONT was feeling very badly.  Thus he died of the terrible disease of rabies 
3 CONT without anything to relieve his suffering.

1 NOTE Not much is known about Joel Petty except that he lived in North Carolina 
2 CONT when his older children were born and he moved to Tennessee later where he 
2 CONT died.  It is said that Joel Petty had 12 sons but only 6 of that number 
2 CONT ever came to a place in Bastrop County that afterward became known as 
2 CONT Pettytown.  There are other Pettys buried in the cemetery at Bastrop, 
2 CONT Texas, who could have been some of those sons.  They were among the first 
2 CONT 300 colonists of Stephen F. Austin that came to Texas.

2 CONT The Petty sons who came to Pettytown were Theophilus, John, Joel Jr., 
2 CONT Johnathan, Hubert and Dock Petty.  Just where these other Pettys went 
2 CONT after leaving Pettytown is not known; but, this fact lead us to believe 
2 CONT that almost anyone that we might meet by the name of Petty could be 
2 CONT related to the Pettys of Pettytown.  The 1860 U. S. Census taken from 
2 CONT Bastrop County gave the name of Theophilus Petty, Wife Charlotte and two 
2 CONT children as living there in that year.

1 NOTE This is where the Pettys get their Indian blood.  Elizabeth was one-half 
2 CONT Cherokee Indian from the state of Tennessee.  Many of the Cherokee Indians 
2 CONT migrated to Oklahoma in later years.  It is said that Elizabeth's mother 
2 CONT was the daughter of a Colonel Potts.  Her father was Samuel Dawson.  Old 
2 CONT timers of Pettytown said that she once had a brother, Riley Dawson, to 
2 CONT visit her at Pettytown.  He rode in hoseback and left the same way.  It is 
2 CONT thought that he came from Oklahoma.

2 CONT The Pettys in general were daring and adventurous. Like all pioneers the 
2 CONT feared nothing and if there were a war or anything dangerous goin on they 
2 CONT were among the first to get into it.  All of the sons of John and 
2 CONT Elizabeth served in the Civil War.  Some saw action in battle while some 
2 CONT endured hardships that affected their health in later years.  All of their 
2 CONT 14 living children followed them to Texas but all did not settle at 
2 CONT Pettytown.  Others stayed there for a while and then moved away.  The land 
2 CONT was poor in Bastrop County and the spirit of adventure carried some to 
2 CONT other places.

1 NOTE Jane Petty married Samuel Quenn and had 9 children.  This couple was 
2 CONT married in Arkansas before coming to Texas.  They settled in Williamson 
2 CONT County near the little town of Florence.  The Queen family led a very 
2 CONT colorful life.  Sam Queen was an uncle of J. Frank Norfleet who is well 
2 CONT known in Texas history.  One of the Queen sons truned outlaw and was 
2 CONT killed up on the Red River.  Others of the fmily led very peaceful and 
2 CONT prosperous lives in and around Georgetown, Texas

1 NOTE Edna Petty married Elias Queen, brother to Sam Queen who was married to 
2 CONT Jane Petty.  Edna died at the birth of her first child and it died also.  
2 CONT Elias Queen afterward remarried and raised a large family, some of whom

1 NOTE Ann Catherine Petty married Thomas Williams first in Missouri and came to 
2 CONT Texas as a widow.  She later was married to L. S. Pogue but no children 
2 CONT were born to the last union.  There were 4 children by Williams.  Aunt Ann 
2 CONT Pogue, as she was known to everyone at Pettytown, lived longer than all of 
2 CONT the Petty children.  She did not die until 1922 and before her passing she 
2 CONT told many of the stories in this Petty history.  She had mmany experiences 
2 CONT during the Civil War.  One of them was of going from the South into 
2 CONT Kentucky with her husband hidden under a wooden tub in their wagon.  She 
2 CONT drove through Confederate lines all day and they searched the wagon twice 
2 CONT but never found him.  She always said that she wasn't afraid of anything, 
2 CONT not even death.  It is said that she never had a headache in her life nor 
2 CONT ever took a dose of medicine.  At the age of 91 years, she went to bed and 
2 CONT slept her last hours away, conscious during all of her waking hours.  She 
2 CONT is buried in Willow Creek Cemetery near Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas

1 NOTE Joanna Petty married Isaac Barber and had 6 children.  This family settled 
2 CONT in Williamson County after coming to Texas.  Isaac Barber was killed by 
2 CONT the Sheriff of that County and his oldest child, John Barber, swore that 
2 CONT when he became 21 years old that he would kill that Sheriff.  True to his 
2 CONT word when his 21st birthday came he put on his gun and sent to Georgetown 
2 CONT to get his man.  He then fled to the Indian Territory of Aklahoma where 
2 CONT Auto Joanna and children followed later.  It is said to be on record at 
2 CONT Austin where she applied for free land up there and got it on the strength 
2 CONT of her Indian blood.  We have not been able to learn just what part of 
2 CONT Oklahoma the Barbers lived but keep hoping that someday we will find their 
2 CONT place of residence.

1 NOTE James Marion Petty married Arrena Fowler, who was of another pioneer 
2 CONT family of Pettytown.  9 children were born to this couple.  Uncle Jim, as 
2 CONT he was called, spent most all of his life in the Pettytown community with 
2 CONT the exception of a short time that he lived at Santa Anna in Coleman 
2 CONT County where he and wife ran a hotel.  While at Santa Anna, their youngest 
2 CONT child, a girl, ran away and married Harvey Smith and she never became 
2 CONT reconciled to her family because they objected to her marriage.  This Mrs. 
2 CONT Lizzie Smith still lives with her daughter at Monahans, Texas.  
2 CONT 
2 CONT Uncle Jim Petty's health broke and he had to givbe away his farm in order 
2 CONT to draw a Confederate pension.  He retired to Pettytown where he died at 
2 CONT the home of his son.  The cause of his death was said to be consumption 
2 CONT that he had contracted druing the Civil Way.  Uncle Jim and Aunt Remie are 
2 CONT buried in the Pettytown Cemetery.

1 NOTE John M. Petty married Cynthia Statira Peacock and had 10 children.  This 
2 CONT Petty son was perhaps the most daring of all.  He did not marry until he 
2 CONT was 24 years old and that gavbe him time to have all sorts of experiences. 
2 CONT  He served in the Civil Way and had a horse shot from under him at the 
2 CONT battle of Galveston.  He and all of his brothers drove the trail to Kansas 
2 CONT when Texas was nothing but a wild prairie.  It was John who was sent back 
2 CONT to Missouri to bring one of his widowed sisters to Pettytown.  One day 
2 CONT John dared his brothers to see which could swallow the biggest rock.  Sam 
2 CONT and Jim got a good-sized one down their throats but when it came John's 
2 CONT time to swallow one, he tried such a big one that he hearly choked to 
2 CONT death.  That stopped the rock swalloowing for that time.  John Petty Jr. 
2 CONT is buried in the Pettytown Cemetery but no one knows just where his grave 
2 CONT is located.

2 CONT was perhaps the least adventurous of all the Petty boys.  He lived all of 
2 CONT his life on a place that adjoined that of his father's homestead.  It was 
2 CONT with him and Aunt Mary that Grandpa Petty lived after the death of his 
2 CONT wife, Elizabeth.  Uncle Sam was a religious man and a member of the 
2 CONT Masonic Lodge.  His home was always open to orphan children or older ones 
2 CONT who had no place to stay.  After the early death of John Jr., Uncle Sam 
2 CONT and Aunt Mary kept the two younger children of John's in their home.  He 
2 CONT and Aunt Mary are buried in the Pettytown Cemetery.

1 NOTE Married first to James Rice Crouch and later to a cousin of hers by the 
2 CONT name of Nathan Petty.  Another cousin shot Nathan over the love of her and 
2 CONT she later married someone else.  Aunt Minty, as she was called, was a 
2 CONT small lady and was no doubt a great flirt.  While unlucky in marriage, she 
2 CONT left some very smart daughters who were responsible for much of this Petty 
2 CONT history.  One of her daughters, Mrs. Belle Gover, lived until 1951.  One 
2 CONT of her granddaughters came from Oregon before she died and spent one month 
2 CONT with Mrs. Gover taking facts and dates of this Petty history.  As far as 
2 CONT we have been able to check on it, everything and every date has proven to 
2 CONT be correct.  She had a remarkable memory, as did many of the other older 
2 CONT Pettys.  Another grand-daughter, Mrs. Eddie Voight lives in Austin and has 
2 CONT a museum of relics that is well worth anyone's time to go wee at 1501 E. 
2 CONT 13th Street, Austin, Texas.  Aunt Minty is buried at Kelsey, in Upshur 
2 CONT County, Texas.
