This is based upon a prepared statement sworn to by William when he 2 CONT successfully applied for a pension as a Rev. War vet. on Nov. 27, 1845, 2 CONT Certificate 33083 Ga. Willima's mind appears very clear at that time even 2 CONT though he was to be "eighty-five years of age in March next ensuing," 2 CONT Submitted by Dr. R. Lanier Jones 2 CONT Cary Cox and his second wife, Mary Horne, are the earliest known ancestors 2 CONT of our Cox family who can be positively 2 CONT identified. 2 CONT The first we know of Cary Cox is that he was living in Virginia in 2 CONT March 1761 with his first wife where and when his 2 CONT first child William was born. This is based upon a prepared statement 2 CONT sworn to by William when he successfully applied 2 CONT for a pension as a Revolutionary War veteran on November 27, 1845, 2 CONT Certificate 33083 Georgia. William’s mind 2 CONT appears very clear at that time even though he was to be “eighty-five 2 CONT years of age in March next ensuing,” ergo born in 2 CONT March 1761. He stated he had no records but that he enlisted as a 2 CONT substitute on “April 15 or 16 in the year seventeen 2 CONT hundred seventy-six in the village of Halifax,” N.C., served in “Captain 2 CONT Caswel’s Company of the 5th Regiment,” and 2 CONT was “discharged in October or November 1778.” William’s younger 2 CONT half-brothers, Ichabod and Asa, attested to the 2 CONT accuracy of the application. 2 CONT Family historians believe that Cary Cox was born in Virginia because his 2 CONT first son was born there. We do not know 2 CONT the name of Cary’s first wife (the mother of William) nor do we know 2 CONT anything of Cary’s parents, brothers and/or sisters 2 CONT or of his life prior to William’s birth. The considerable reference to 2 CONT William here is because through him we have 2 CONT contemporary information about Cary. Cary, Jr., Cary’s fifth son, is our 2 CONT ancestor and the grandfather of Henry Clay Cox. 2 CONT Cary Cox, according to William’s pension application, moved to North 2 CONT Carolina soon after William was born. He first 2 CONT appears in the Court House records of Halifax County, North Carolina in 2 CONT February 1764 as witness to a will, Will Book 2 CONT 1, page 132. Thereafter until about 1788 his name often appears in deeds 2 CONT in Northampton, Halifax and Warren (the 2 CONT Butte) Counties. 2 CONT Cary Cox married Mary (Horne) Chappell between November 11, 1763 and May 2 CONT 14, 1765, probably in Northampton 2 CONT County, NC where she was living when Thomas Chappell’s will was probated 2 CONT in February 1764. Cary and Mary spent 2 CONT the long remainder of their lives together. No record of their marriage 2 CONT could be found. 2 CONT Cary Cox and “Mary his wife” sold 94 acres in Northampton Co., NC “the 2 CONT plantation whereon Cary Cox now lives” 2 CONT on May 14, 1765 to Thomas Wilburn for 32 pounds. The deed, Deed Book 3, 2 CONT page 371, refers to the “Right of said 2 CONT wife’s Dower in the Thomas Chappell Estate, Deceased.” 2 CONT This sequence of events is based upon available Court House records. It 2 CONT varies from the record in Cary Cox’s grandson 2 CONT Orren D. Cox’s bible as quoted on page 110 of Mary Head Burton’s Head-Cox 2 CONT and Allied Families 1615-1942 in the 2 CONT Georgia State Archives. Orren D. Cox was born in 1809 and the early 2 CONT entries probably were made decades later and 2 CONT based on legend. It states Cary Cox was born, about 1736 in Halifax Co. 2 CONT NC. The date is reasonable but most family 2 CONT genealogists, including Mrs. Burton, believe that he was born in Virginia. 2 CONT It states that he married Mary Horne in 1762, 2 CONT and that William was born in 1764 rather than March 1761 as William 2 CONT himself attested. In 1762 Mary Horne was the 2 CONT wife of Thomas Chappell. Had William been born in March 1764 he would have 2 CONT been barely twelve when he entered 2 CONT the Army in April 1776. It was common for boys of fourteen and fifteen to 2 CONT be enlisted to support combat troops and 2 CONT William’s affidavit indicates this is what he did during his service. Such 2 CONT differences are not surprising and should not 2 CONT discredit either Mrs. Burton’s book or Orren D. Cox’s bible records. Both 2 CONT have made essential contributions to Cox 2 CONT family history. 2 CONT Cary Cox’s children are listed below. All except William are by Mary Horne 2 CONT Cox and were born in Halifax Co., NC. 2 CONT 1 William (direct ancestor of Tim Cox) 1761 - 1848, m Mrs. Katy Roberts 2 CONT Arthur. 2 CONT 2 Jesse 1766 - 1834, m 1st Nancy Taylor, 2nd Nancy Hobbs. 2 CONT 3 Ichabod 1769 - 1861, m Mary Rowan 1775 - 1843. 2 CONT 4 Asa 1773 - 1864, m Mariah Roundtree 2 CONT 5 Clara 1775 - m Southall 2 CONT 6 Cary, Jr. 1778 - 1871 m Martha Roundtree 2 CONT 7 James 1779 m Eva Delaney Robertson 2 CONT 8 Bethany 1831, m James Dismukes. 2 CONT Cary Cox is considered to have been a soldier of the Revolution. His grave 2 CONT was so marked in 1929 and he is included 2 CONT in the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Patriots Index. The DAR says 2 CONT it credits his military service solely to the 2 CONT depositions by his sons, Ichabod and Asa, in William’s pension 2 CONT application. They stated that Cary went to the Army with 2 CONT William, but being seven and three years old in 1776, they are not likely 2 CONT to remember accurately an event occurring 2 CONT sixty-nine years earlier. There is nothing in the accredited American 2 CONT Revolution Roster of the Fort Sullivan Chapter of 2 CONT the Daughters of the American Revolution of Charleston, SC (which includes 2 CONT William’s service record), the South 2 CONT Carolina Department of Archives and History, or the National Archives to 2 CONT indicate that Cary was ever a soldier. Soldier 2 CONT or not he was a valuable citizen and he and his sons made a substantial 2 CONT contribution to the development of the Carolina's 2 CONT and Georgia. 2 CONT The Cox family, except William, left Halifax in 1788 or 1789 and headed 2 CONT south and west seeking better land. The 2 CONT 1790 Census listed them as residents of Edgefield District, South 2 CONT Carolina. About 1790 Wiliam, who probably had 2 CONT married by then, joined the family and after a few years he moved on to 2 CONT Pendleton District, South Carolina. Cary, Jr. 2 CONT married Martha Roundtree of Edgefield in January 1799 and Asa married her 2 CONT sister Mariah. In 1800 the Coxes began to 2 CONT sell their land in Edgefield. 2 CONT The next move was sixty miles west to Warren County, Georgia. The Warren 2 CONT County tax lists of 1805 report that Cary 2 CONT paid poll tax and Cary, Jr., then six years married, paid tax on two 2 CONT tracts of land and two slaves. 2 CONT By 1807 Cary and Cary, Jr. had again moved about fifty miles farther west 2 CONT to their final home and resting place at 2 CONT Stanfordville in the south-west corner of Putnam Co., Ga. about twelve 2 CONT miles from Eatonton. The record shows they 2 CONT began to acquire land there in 1807. Stanfordville was a thriving town in 2 CONT the 1830’s but it now is completely gone and 2 CONT difficult to locate. According to the Eatonton Messenger on July 26, 1960, 2 CONT prior to 1840 Stanfordville was also called 2 CONT Devils Half Acre, and was a place where gamblers, cock fighters, and 2 CONT drunkards, including Indians, came on weekends 2 CONT to drink, race, gamble and fight chickens and each other. 2 CONT Families like the Coxes were essential to the times and the places they 2 CONT lived. Cary was a pioneer-settler continually 2 CONT pushing out into less developed or new territory. Many of his descendants 2 CONT became leaders in Georgia and adjoining 2 CONT states. Cary Cox’s sons settled in Georgia counties: William in Habersham, 2 CONT Jesse in Jones, Ichabod in Talbot, Asa in 2 CONT Harris, Cary, Jr. in Putnam and James in Lee. They had many children. 2 CONT Probably Cary’s best known descendant is his 2 CONT great-grandson, John B. Gordon, Major General in the Confederate Army, 2 CONT Governor and U.S. Senator from Georgia. 2 CONT Cary Cox died at age seventy-eight on March 14, 1814 and was buried in 2 CONT Cox-Griggs Burying Ground, near his home, 2 CONT in the woods of the Oconee National Forest, where Mary was to follow him 2 CONT when she died, September 23, 1823. 2 CONT 1 SOUR From R. The story goes 2 CONT that his people had resisted James I, of England, and for that reason 2 CONT their lands were confiscated. After Thomas Coxe came to Virginia, he 2 CONT acquired extensive holdings on James River and died a well-to-do man. 2 CONT There was another story that he was the father of ten sons, Asa, 2 CONT Ichabod, Sampson, Jesse, Cary, Rowan, Willis, Oran, Bartley, and George, 2 CONT but all except the youngest were drowned by a Negro slave who had lost her 2 CONT mind when her mate died of typhoid fever; however, George, the youngest, 2 CONT was resuscitated and became the ancestor of Malinda Cox, the mother of 2 CONT John B.
