1 CONT DEATH OF ARTHUR LOWMON.

1 CONT Arther Lowman, an old and establish citizen of South Ottawa township, 
1 CONC died at his residence last Saturday evening after several weeks' 
1 CONC sickness. He was held in the highest respect, and the funeral services on 
1 CONC Wednesday were atended by a large number of neighbors and citizens. Rev 
1 CONC D. J. Holmes oficiated. The following sketch of his life is taken from 
1 CONC the Inter State Publishing Co'. history of LaSalle county.
1 CONT Arthur Lowmon, who has been identfied with the county for fifty years, 
1 CONC was born in Berkley county, Va. March 18, 1818, and was reared and 
1 CONC educated in Ohio. He came to Livingston county in 1836, and Jan 10, 1837 
1 CONC was married to Percilla Pickens, who was born April 15, 1823, a native of 
1 CONC Massachusetts. She died Feb'y 21, 1857, leaving five children - Alice A., 
1 CONC wife of Lewis Fogler of San Bernardino county, Cal.  Arthur James of 
1 CONC Benton County, Ind., Wm. Ezra at home, Clara I, married to Albert 
1 CONC Nattinger, of Benton County, Ind., and Michael M., of Sumner County, Kan. 
1 CONC He was again married to Margaret Blair (date is unreadable) a native of 
1 CONC Adams County, Ohio. Born in 1824, a daughter of William and Permelia 
1 CONC (Dunham) Blair. To this union were born four children - Linna M., Wil., 
1 CONC Wilson B., Minna P., and Ada. Mr. Lowmon came to La Salle county in 1845, 
1 CONC and in 1846 he settled on the place where he now resides. He has 
1 CONC experienced all the hardships and privations incident to the pioneer 
1 CONC life, and has witnessed the many changes and improvements which have 
1 CONC taken place within the last fifty years.  Mr. Lowmon and his wife are 
1 CONC members of the Methodist Episcopal church, his former also belonging to 
1 CONC the same church. In politics he affillates with the Republican party, He 
1 CONC has held the officse of township supervisor and school director for many 
1 CONC years. At the time of the building of the court-house he was supervisor, 
1 CONC and his name is recorded on the corner-stone of that building.

1 CONT Arthur Lowman died at his home on the south side on Saturday evening, 
1 CONC April 7, after an illiness of several weeks. He was born and reared to 
1 CONC manhood in Ohio, and came to Illinois in 1836, settling in Livingston 
1 CONC County. After nine years of residence there, he removed to his late 
1 CONC homestead in South Ottawa, where he had lived a pioneer and retired 
1 CONC farmer for fifty three years. By dint of hard work, economy and good 
1 CONC habits he had accumulated a considerable compentence, and died possesser 
1 CONC of 225 acres of valuable land.
1 CONT He was a man of sterling worth, served his town for several years as 
1 CONC supervisor, and in all his dealings, as public officer or private 
1 CONC individual, he was the soul of honor and integrity.
1 CONT His remains were interred from the family residence on Wednesday, at 11 
1 CONC o'clock a.m.

1 CONT Wilson Raymond Lowmon, 61, well known resident of Fowler, passed away at 
1 CONC 7:45 o'clock last Thursday evening in Robert Long Hospital, Indianapolis 
1 CONC after several years illness.

1 CONT Ray as he was known by everyone was born October 3, 1897 at Ottowa, 
1 CONC Illinois coming to Benton County with his parents to farm north of Fowler 
1 CONC in 1915.

1 CONT For more than 30 years he was enployed as a printer at the Benton Review 
1 CONC Publishing Co. He was a faithful employee of the local publishing plant 
1 CONC until compelled to retire on account of failing health. He was a member 
1 CONC of the Ottowa Methodist Church and Prarie Lodge No. 213, Knights of 
1 CONC Pythis being a past Chancellor Commander of the order.

1 CONT On June 13, 1920 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Morris, to this 
1 CONC union were born two daughters Mrs. Anita R Hinton and Mrs. Betty Pilotte 
1 CONC of Fowler and a son William H. of Bellingham, Washington all of whom 
1 CONC survive with the widow.

1 CONT Also surviving are three sisters Mre. Margarite Fenken of Hoopston, 
1 CONC Illinois, Mrs. Arlene Wright of Indianapolis and Mrs. Joy Moore of Fowler 
1 CONC and thirteen grandchildren.

1 CONT Funeral services were held at 2:00 Sunday afternoon at Hooker Funeral 
1 CONC Home with Rev. Homer Cloud conducting the services and Mrs. June 
1 CONC Fitzgerald at the organ. Interment at Fowler Cemetary.

1 CONT Fred Pike dies Friday after brief illness.

1 CONT Had lived here almost half a century. Farmed the site of Newman Grove.
1 CONT After a illness of about three weeks Fred Pike, pioneer resident of 
1 CONC Newman Grove answered the final summons last Friday morning about 3:00. 
1 CONC Mr Pike had been in his usual health until about three weeks ago when he 
1 CONC suffered a attack of pneumonia. He had apparently recovered but other 
1 CONC complications developed and his heart became affected. Thursday evening 
1 CONC he was quiet weak, but went to sleep at the usual time and passed away 
1 CONC quietly in the early morning hours.
1 CONT
1 CONT Frederick Pike, the son of William and Ann Pike, was born April 6, 1858 
1 CONC in Glamoran Shire, Wales and died Jan 8, 1932 at his home in Newman Grove 
1 CONC at the age of 73 years 9 months and 2 days. At the age of 9 (1865) he 
1 CONC came with his parents to America and settled in Ottowa Ill where he grew 
1 CONC to manhood. On Feb 8, 1882 he was married to Miss Annie Maria Martin at 
1 CONC Gurnec,Ill. A few months later he and his wife came to Newman Grove to 
1 CONC make their home. At that time the only buildinga were those in old town. 
1 CONC Mr Pike purchased a farm and for several years tilled the soil on which 
1 CONC the present site of Newman Grove is located. When the railroad came to 
1 CONC this vicenity he was, with others insturmintal in having it built to 
1 CONC Newman Grove.
1 CONT When Mr Pike built the frame house on the farm, which is the house one 
1 CONC block north of the Saare store building, he intended to make it a full 
1 CONC two stories but so many told him that the winds which swep the praries 
1 CONC would blow it away that he made it 2 feet lower than he intended. During 
1 CONC those early days the wind did move it on it's foundation, necessatating 
1 CONC some repairs. This was the family home after the town grew up around the 
1 CONC farm home and when the town was platted and laid out into streets, it 
1 CONC stood in the middle of the street and had to be moved back to conform to 
1 CONC the requirments of this town. Later Mr Pike sold this and moved to the 
1 CONC location which has been his home for many years.

1 CONT One son Fred Wm Jr was born to Mr and Mrs Pike. Mrs Pike passed away Aug 
1 CONC 3, 1884. On Oct 8, 1885 he was married to Miss Lillian E. Huffman who 
1 CONC passed away Dec 10, 1912. To them were born three daughters Ethal, 
1 CONC Winifred, and Edna all of whom preccded him in death. On Nov 8, 1922 he 
1 CONC was married to Ella A. Black at Ottowa Ill who passed away Nov 28, 1931 
1 CONC just six weeks to a day before her husband.

1 CONT Mr Pike is survived by one son Fredirick William of Lincoln, Five grand 
1 CONC childrem, Donald Pike of Lincoln, Jean Doty of Newman Grove, Paul, 
1 CONC Barbara and Winifred Duncan of Shendoah, Iowa, He is also survivied by 
1 CONC two sisters Mrs Jane Pike of Ottowa, Ill Mrs Josie Lowman of Fowler, In.
1 CONT Two brothers, Henry Pike of Francisville, In and Dr. William Pike of 
1 CONC Ottowa, Ill.

1 CONT Mr Pike was a good neighor and always ready to help in time of need. He 
1 CONC was a regular attendant of the Methodist church as long as his health 
1 CONC permittred him to be about and contributrd to the suppotr of the church.
1 CONT Funeral services were hwald Monday afternoon at 2:00 oclock from the 
1 CONC Methodist church with pastor Rev R.D. Winker in charge and interment made 
1 CONC in Hope cemetary. Old frinds Wm Congram, Fred Benson, Anthoney Robinson, 
1 CONC Gunder Qualset, Srver Sanderson, and John Hoagland acted as pall bearers.

1 CONT John D. Morris, 79, of Fowler, former farmer and retired carpenter, died 
1 CONC at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette, after a ten 
1 CONC weeks' illness with gangrene.
1 CONT Born in Ross county, Ohio, most of his life was spent in Benton county.
1 CONT Oct. 20, 1886, he married to Zora E. Hickman, of Talbot, who died in 1924.
1 CONT He had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge 45 years and also of the 
1 CONC Methodist church.
1 CONT Surviving are five children, Albert R; William F. and Frank J. of Omaha, 
1 CONC Neb., Claude A., of Walkerton, and Mrs. Elizabeth Lowmon, Fowler; four 
1 CONC brothers, F.X. Morris, Lafayette, Lafe Morris, Tyner, Ind., William 
1 CONC Morris, Los Angeles, and Elmer Morris, whereabouts unknown, with a 
1 CONC sister, Miss Elizabeth Morris, Swanington.

1 CONT Mrs. Mable Morris, wife of Claude Morris, formerly of Fowler, died at 
1 CONC 3:15 o'clock Sunday morning at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. 
1 CONC She had been in a critical condition for several weeks and Saturday 
1 CONC morning she submitted to a surgical operation from which she failed to 
1 CONC rally. 
1 CONT News of her death was a great shock to many of her frinds here, where she 
1 CONC resided until moving to Lafayette ten years ago.
1 CONT Mrs. Morris was born May 2, 1889, at Graysville, Ind. She was a daughter 
1 CONC of Joseph and Mary Boicourt Hummel. She married Claude Morris at Fowler, 
1 CONC September 23, 1915. Ten years ago they moved to Lafayette for residence. 
1 CONC She was a member of the Methodist church at Fowler.
1 CONT Survivors besides the husband are her mother, who lives at Dugger, Ind.; 
1 CONC two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Parr, Sedro Woolley, Wash.; Mrs. Geneva Storey, 
1 CONC Dugger, Ind.; four brothers, A.H. Hummel, Detroit ; James, Indianapolis; 
1 CONC Ned and Mort, both of Dugger.
1 CONT Funeral services were conducted at the Rogers & Smith funeral home 
1 CONC Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was at Fowler at 3:45 Monday 
1 CONC afternoon, where the casket was opened for friends in the chapel at the

1 CONT Lester Hinton 34, one of Fowler's widely known young men, was fatally 
1 CONC injured last night about 8 o'clock when a laundry truck he was driving, 
1 CONC vaulted into a deep ditch at a point about one-half mile north of 
1 CONC Kentland on state road 41. He died at 1:30 this Thursday morning at Dr. 
1 CONC W.C. Matthews' hospital in Kentland without regaining consciousness.
1 CONT
1 CONT The exact cause of the tragic accident will never be known as there were 
1 CONC no eye witnesses. Hinton was returning to Fowler after collecting laundry 
1 CONC at Brook, Morocco and other points in that vicinity when the Dodge truck 
1 CONC failed to negotiate the curve on the highway at the cross roads near the 
1 CONC Thomas Mulligan home.
1 CONT
1 CONT The first guard post, just south of the east and west road, was broken 
1 CONC off at the ground, and the truck carreened on the west bank of the ditch 
1 CONC a distance of about one hundred feet when it vaulted into the ditch and 
1 CONC came to a stop fifty feet farther south on its left side, headed north in 
1 CONC the opposite direction it was traveling. The crash was heard by Mr. 
1 CONC Mulligan, who was in his house at the time. He lighted a lantern and on 
1 CONC investigating, found the car lying in the stream at the bottom of the 
1 CONC fifteen foot ditch but he could find no trace of the driver, who he 
1 CONC believed, was pinned under the wreck. He then went to Kentland for 
1 CONC assistance. Accompanied by Sheriff Grant Hampton, Mr. Mulligan returned 
1 CONC to the scene and they found the unfortunate men on the edge of the east 
1 CONC bank of the ditch some sixty feet to the south of the truck, where he had 
1 CONC been hurled through the top by the impact. Hasset's ambulance was 
1 CONC summoned and the injured man was taken to the Matthew's hospital, where 
1 CONC he died about six hours later. Death was caused from a fracture of the 
1 CONC skull at the base of the left ear. An examination also disclosed that the 
1 CONC left arm was mangled: ribs broken lose from the back bone on the left 
1 CONC side; bruises on the left side of the face and on both legs.
1 CONT  
1 CONT The fact that the left front tire was down with the other three intact, 
1 CONC leads to the belief that the tire blew out and caused the driver to lose 
1 CONC control. Tracks on the ground at the scene indicated that the vehicle was 
1 CONC traveling at a high rate of speed. Marks on the almost perpendicular east 
1 CONC bank of the ditch, disclosed that the truck first vaulted the six foot 
1 CONC stream of water brfore toppling over on its side. The clothes woren by 
1 CONC Mr. Hinton were soaking wet which caused some persons to believe he was 
1 CONC thrown into the water and crawled to the bank where he was found. This 
1 CONC theory is impossible, on account of the nature of his injuries. Mr. 
1 CONC Hinton was considered a careful driver, having been employed by the 
1 CONC Fowler Laundry for the past five years and yesterday's accident was his 
1 CONC first and only mishap of any kind.

1 CONT  He was hurrying home to be present at a birthday party in honor of his 
1 CONC wife that was to have been heald at the Ancel Tucker home, following the 
1 CONC basketball game. When he failed to arrive home as planned before he left 
1 CONC town at 11 o'clock in the morning, Mrs. Hinton became alarmed and drove 
1 CONC to Kentland, but did not learn of the sad accident until some time after 
1 CONC she had returned home.
1 CONT Mr. Hinton had lived practiclly all his life in this immediate vicinity. 
1 CONC He graduated from the Freeland Park high school and his wife was formerly 
1 CONC Miss Lula Norwood, daughter of county recorder, H.S. Norwood. Besides his 
1 CONC wife, he is survied by one son, David, 14 and one daughter, Ruth Ann, 16, 
1 CONC and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mort Hinton. He was thir only child. Lester 
1 CONC was a popular young man and his death is mourned by a host of friends. 
1 CONT The body was brought to the Comley funeral home and funeral services will 
1 CONC be held from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

1 CONT The wrecked truck was removed from the ditch by the Hoss & Cassidy 
1 CONC wrecker this Thursday morning and brought to their garage here. The load 
1 CONC of laundry was removed from the truck last night and no damage resulted 
1 CONC to it.
1 CONT Had Mr. Mulligan not made an investigation after hearing the crash, 
1 CONC nobody would have known of the accident until daylight the following 
1 CONC morning as the truck was lying at the extreme bottom of the fifteen foot 
1 CONC ditch and could not be seen by passing motorists. The injured man was 
1 CONC also on the bank about thirty feet east of the pavement out of range of 
1 CONC headlights.

1 CONT Mort Hinton, 78, retired farmer passed away Tuesday morning at the family 
1 CONC home on east eight street after an extended illness. He had farmed for 
1 CONC many years south of Fowler until moving to Fowler for residence several 
1 CONC years ago. Surviving are one sister Mrs Etta Bennett of Marion, widow 
1 CONC Nellie, one brother Omar of Fort Wayne and two grandchildren Ruth Ann 
1 CONC Pilotte and David Hinton both of Fowler.

1 CONC Elizabeth Hospital Monday following a heart attack. She was taken to the

1 CONC from farming. Mr. Hinton passed away in May 1950. She was a member of
