Stewart 2 CONT Hazard a resident of New Berlin, in said County of Chenango, aged 2 CONT eighty-seven years and upwards, who being first duly sworn according to 2 CONT law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain 2 CONT the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. 2 CONT That he entered 2 CONT the service of the United States under the following named officers and 2 CONT served as herein stated: 1 NOTE 1st: That about the first day of April in the year 1776 - he resided at 2 CONT Caughnawaga, now Montgomery County, then called Tryon County-- that 2 CONT about that time the citizens of that section of county became excited & 2 CONT alarmed upon the subject of the war, & for the purpose of resisting the 2 CONT aggression of the British and to repel the Indians & Tories, a band or 2 CONT company of men was organized at Caughnawaga of about twenty in 2 CONT number of which company this defonent was appointed by them the 2 CONT leader or Captain. That shortly after this Company was raised ( which 2 CONT was not done under any authority from the State) orders were received 2 CONT to have every man capable of bearing arms equipped with gun, bayonet, 2 CONT cartridge Box, four and twenty rounds of powder and Ball- fire flints, 2 CONT knapsack, and a brush and priming wire and be ready at a minutes 2 CONT warning to turn out into the service. As soon as this order was received, 2 CONT he immediately, with his company of men which he had commanded, 2 CONT _______ themselves in a company of malitia of the town of 2 CONT Caughnawaga, commanded by Captain John Dairs in the Regiment 2 CONT commanded by Col. Fisher. After they had equipped they marched with 2 CONT their company with Captain Yale's Company and others, from 2 CONT Caughnawaga up to the German Flats where the Indian Treaty was formed 2 CONT between General Schuyler and the Indians. He was discharged from the 2 CONT service there at at German Flats and returned home. This deponent 2 CONT cannot now recollect the precise time they were discharged, but thinks 2 CONT it was in Harvest time -- not long after harvest. And the time he was 2 CONT out in the service and under army was between three and four months, 2 CONT but he can't recollect exactly how long. 1 NOTE 2- He was also in the company of the siad John Dairs at the time of 2 CONT General Herkimer expedition against the Indians and marched from 2 CONT Caughnawaga up the Mohawk River to near Little Falls, when General 2 CONT Herkimer asked him if he had the small pox, and on his answering that he 2 CONT had not, the Genl. advised him to return home and aid in hunting after the 2 CONT tories, as he was fearful he would catch the small pox and spread it. 2 CONT And he accordingly came home, leaving his company to march on under 2 CONT Herkimer to Riskang where the fight took place between the Indians and 2 CONT the American Troops and where Genl. Herkimer was killed. This deponent 2 CONT was not at this time in the service on the occasion of his marching to 2 CONT near the Little Falls about three or four weeks. 1 NOTE 3rd- On his return to Caughnawaga he commenced scouting after the 2 CONT Indians and Tories and took old John Olbrandt and his son John Olbrandt, 2 CONT and one Captain Whyle, Peter Lewoss who were Tories and whom this 2 CONT deponent took and carried to Johnstown Jail. During the year 1776 (as 2 CONT this deponent thinks- but at any rate in the year that the Connecticut 2 CONT troops came up to Johnstown) he was with the troops under Col. Dayton 2 CONT which attached and took Fort Johnson which was commanded by Lieu. 2 CONT John Johnson. While they were engaged in attacking this Fort, he spent 2 CONT in the service about a fortnight- among the soldiers who served with him 2 CONT this season, at different times, were Benjamin, Davis, Leiutenant. One 2 CONT Vandenwacker; two Van Bockling- Gillet- Van Deusen & one Leuitenant 2 CONT Van Brockin; This deponent can't now remember the order in which some 2 CONT of these events occured owing to his advanced age & from the gradual 2 CONT decay of his memory. He was a minute man as may be called and liable at 2 CONT all times to be called into duty. and for nearly all the time from the 2 CONT time he was required to equip until he left the Mowhawk country he was 2 CONT called out very frequently on alarms and rumors of attack from Indians & 2 CONT Tories. Indeed nearly his whole time was spent in the service he had 2 CONT very little time to attend to his own business. 1 NOTE 4- He continued to reside at Caughnawaga until the month of August in 2 CONT 1777 (with the exception of a short time that he was removing his 2 CONT family to Southington, Hartford County, Connecticut) when he left the 2 CONT Mowhawk Country and joined his family in Connecticut. He did not 2 CONT remain with his family long & then two or three days before he 2 CONT volunteered and joined at Southington a company of the Connecticut 2 CONT Militia, for the term of three months-- commanded by Capt. Ambrose 2 CONT Sloper. He does not recollect the names of the other company officers or 2 CONT the Col. of the Regiment but his General was General Putnam-- They 2 CONT immediately marched from Southington to Fish Hill on the Hudson River, 2 CONT passing through oblong he recallects, on account of there were many 2 CONT tories there-- to lay at Fish Hill until the British shipping went up the 2 CONT river with a view of meeting Burgoyne when he marched with the toops 2 CONT lying at Fishkill up the River to Red Hook. Keeping pace or the march 2 CONT with the British in these fields. The third or fourth day after reaching 2 CONT Red Hook, intelligence warned of the defeat and surrender of Burgoyne. 2 CONT When the British _______ went down the River and he with the troops 2 CONT marched back to the Highland on the side of the River-- He lay at the 2 CONT Barreck No. 2- Highlands until his three months had expired. Then he was 2 CONT dischared with his company and returned home to his family in 2 CONT Southington. This discharge was the last of November as he now thinks. 1 NOTE 5- In the next year (1778) in the month of June as he thinks but cannot 2 CONT state positively he again volunteered in the Connecticut troops at 2 CONT Southington for three months in a company commanded by Cap0tain Elyab 2 CONT Seymour of New Hartford. The Colonel was Col. Wells, and the 2 CONT ___________ GTeneral Putnam. He marched with this company 2 CONT immediately after he volunteered to Horseback, passing through 2 CONT Chesb____, Wallenford, North Haven, New Haven, Stratford, Corsecole . 2 CONT He lay stationed at Horseneck until his three months had ______ when he 2 CONT was discharged and returned home to Sounthington. His duty and 2 CONT business at Horseneck was to scout out after the tories, stand Island, 2 CONT Pa.- While he was in this town at Horseneck he knew among the soldiers 2 CONT Rudoph Dutchen, Wm. Sledd, and many others that he cannot now 2 CONT recollect. 1 NOTE 6- Year 1779 at Southington, he once again volunteered in the 2 CONT Connecticut troops at Southington the the term of three months. In the 2 CONT company commanded by Capt. Ambrose Sloper Lieutenant William Sears, 2 CONT Col. Mills was Col. of the Regiment and Putnam (he thinks) was his 2 CONT General. He marched with his company from Southington soon after he 2 CONT volunteered to Norwalk, going through the same places that he marched 2 CONT thro' when he went to Horseneck the year before. He volunteered in the 2 CONT month of June as near as he can remember, at Norwalk he was with his 2 CONT Company which was stationed there to protect the town and to prevent 2 CONT the enemy from landing there from Long Island. While he was stationed 2 CONT at Norwalk an alarm was spread that the enemy were coming to Danbury 2 CONT and he with his company were assigned to march against them and did 2 CONT march 15 on twenty miles when on learning that it was a false alarm 2 CONT they returned. When the term for which he had volunteered or enlisted 2 CONT was out he was discharged at Norwalk and came home to Southington to 2 CONT his family. During this tour he was acquainted with soldier Carter , also 2 CONT a lieu. Newell, Asahel Newell, Samuel Newell, Ahbel Newell, one 2 CONT Byington. 1 NOTE 7- After this and during the following year (he thinks) there came an 2 CONT alarm that the enemy were going to burn and destroy Fishkill. And he 2 CONT volunteered and rode to Fishkill with many others. At Ohlong, on the way 2 CONT to Fishkill they all camped under Capt. Ambrose Sloper (the same Captain 2 CONT he had previously served under) and marched on to Fish kill. He stayed at 2 CONT Fish kill a week or upward with the troops when the enemy got [stopped] 2 CONT attempting to land. They were all dismissed there and returned as 2 CONT before, to Southington to his family. He was out this time four or five 2 CONT weeks. After this at the time the enemy landed at West Heron and 2 CONT marched to New Haven. He again volunteered or turned out to fight them. 2 CONT Captain Clark of Southington had the command of the men who turned out 2 CONT from Southington. He marched to New Haven and there met the American 2 CONT troops who were retreating from before the British from West Haven. 2 CONT The British remained in New Haven all night, and the next morning the 2 CONT Americans drove them on board their shipping to East Haven. He went 2 CONT with the American troops to East Haven on a fast march to Arerent then 2 CONT burning the town. And they succeeded in driving them out of the town on 2 CONT board of their shipping. He was then dismissed at New Haven to which 2 CONT place they had returned from East Haven and then returned home. Having 2 CONT been engaged in this expedition about seven or Eight days. 1 NOTE And he further states that he has no documentary evidence of these 2 CONT his services during the Revolutionary War, and he knows of no person 2 CONT whose testimony he can procure to testify to his service. 1 NOTE In answer to the interrogations required by the War Department to 2 CONT ______ to applicant for pension he answers as follows: 1 NOTE 1st. When fourteen years of age his parents 2 CONT removed to near Albany, New York, where he acquired a good common 2 CONT school education, and in early manhood was converted and began to 2 CONT preach. He came to Wayne county in 1818, and first lived in Plain 2 CONT Township, in a little log school-house near the residence of the late 2 CONT Daniel Silvers, four miles west of Wooster. In March following he 2 CONT removed to his own cabin in Congress township, and soon became known 2 CONT throughout the county as preacher, school teacher, farmer, and best of 2 CONT men. As a Christian he was distinguished for his faith, and his 2 CONT transparent character and guileless life made him a model. As a 2 CONT preacher he was both scriptural and logical. He traveled far and near, 2 CONT and was ever a welcome visitor and friend. he died near West Salem 2 CONT January 7, 1869, aged ninety years. Death to him was without dread, and 2 CONT among his last exhortations in West Salem he used the words: "I am soon 2 CONT to leave earth, and am glad of it; all of my early associates have passed 2 CONT on before, but, thank God, I am hard after them!" His wife was an 2 CONT amiable woman, possessed of rare intelligence, teaching school in the 2 CONT early days, and there are yet living in Wayne and Ashland counties old 2 CONT men and women who received their education from her. Her piety was of 2 CONT the quality of her husband's, and her life a genuine Christian's life. They 2 CONT reared and interesting family, who have proved useful members of 2 CONT society. 2 CONT ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT According to the above, John Hazzard moved to New York with his parents 2 CONT around 1783. By her marriage six children were 2 CONT born, three boys and three girls; John V., Mary K., Daniel V., James, Phebe 2 CONT P. and Lydia V. 1 NOTE Our subject was carefully reared by pious parents, and those high 2 CONT Christian principles that have been his guide throughout his long and 2 CONT honorable life were early instilled into his mind. As he grew up on his 2 CONT father's farm, he acquired a thorough, practical knowledge of agriculture. 2 CONT The first school that he attended was taught by his mother in their home, 2 CONT there being no schoolhouse or church in the county. He subsequently 2 CONT went to the first schoolhouse that was erected thereabouts, which was 2 CONT built of logs, and the school was conducted on the rate-bill system. He 2 CONT began for himself at twenty-one years of age, and for two years was 2 CONT engaged in chopping cord wood, scoring timber and clearing land. For 2 CONT chopping wood he was paid twenty-five cents a cord and his board given 2 CONT him, or if he boarded himself he got thirty-one cents a cord. After that 2 CONT he teamed for two years, and then bought thirty acres of land and a 2 CONT sawmill, for which he went into debt for the sum of $1,400. He ran the 2 CONT mill eighteen years, and at the end of that time sold out, and found his 2 CONT capital to consist of $1,250 and a team and wagon. With his team he 2 CONT started for this State, and in the fall of 1865 landed in Wakeshma 2 CONT Township. He purchased a quarter of section 23, of which thirty-three 2 CONT acres were cleared and fenced. There was an old decayed log house on 2 CONT the place which he fixed up, and the family lived in it seven years. In 2 CONT 1872, he replaced it with a large and well-built frame residence. The fathers of the republic 2 CONT proclaimed it as a neccessary consituent of popular government, and the 2 CONT experience of a hundred years has proven the wisdom of their contention. 2 CONT While they exhibited solicitude for the higher halls of learning by liberal 2 CONT patronage of academics and seminaries, they much more insisted on 2 CONT schools for the masses, feeling well assured that the common sense of 2 CONT the plain people might not be safely relied on for a wise exercise of 2 CONT citizenship without some training for its duties. The question is no 2 CONT longer an open one. Everybody knows the immense value of the public 2 CONT schools and looks upon them as among the most important features in the 2 CONT life of a community. Whatever else a town may offer as inducements for 2 CONT new settlers this must not be overlooked. Let sites for manufactories be 2 CONT as free as the air-- let plant be exempt from taxation-- let franchises 2 CONT be thrown away with prodigal liberality-- let shipping facilities be 2 CONT provided to the widest limit at the cheapest rate--the question will 2 CONT still arise-- what school advantages are available? Tried even by this 2 CONT severe standard, Kalamazoo county is entitled to a high regard. Her 2 CONT public schools are commensurate with her business enterprise and the 2 CONT enlightenment and breadth of view of her people, and this is enough to 2 CONT say. One evidence of her enterprise and progressiveness in this regard is 2 CONT the fact that when she finds a man of high capacity to have this 2 CONT important interest in charge she knows enough to keep him in charge and 2 CONT support his management of school affairs. Professor Jesse W. Hazard, 2 CONT the accomplished and diligent commisioner of schools of the county, has 2 CONT occupied the position continuously since 1897 and is now serving his 2 CONT fourth term. He brought to the discharge ofhis important duties a 2 CONT wisdom gained in an extensive experience as a teacher in several 2 CONT different places under a variety of circumstances, and which ripened his 2 CONT scholarship while it energized and broadened the force of his mind. He is 2 CONT a native of Wayne County, Ohio, born at West Salem in May, 1860. His 2 CONT parents, James and Mary (Gable) Hazard, were natives, respectively, of 2 CONT Ohio and Pennsylvania. The father was engaged in operating a large saw 2 CONT mill in Ohio until 1866, when he came to Michigan with his family and 2 CONT located on a farm near Fulton, this county, on which he died in April, 2 CONT 1904. His father, John Hazard, was born and reared in Connecticut. From 2 CONT there he moved to New York and later he became a pioneer in Wayne 2 CONT County, Ohio. He was an itinerant preacher in the Methodist Episcopal 2 CONT church and also taught school. He died in Wayne county, Ohio. His father, 2 CONT the Professor's great-grandfather, was a Revolutionary soldier. 2 CONT Professor Hazard was educated in the district schools of this county, at 2 CONT Athens high school and the Normal College at Ypsilanti, spending four 2 CONT years at the institution last named. After leaving there he accepted a 2 CONT position as principal of the schools at Marcellus, this state. he then 2 CONT served one year in the same capacity at Prairie Du Lac, Wis., at the end 2 CONT of which he returned to Kalamazoo county, and during the next two years 2 CONT was a teacher in the schools at Fulton. In 1897 he was elected 2 CONT commisioner of schools for the county, a position which he is still 2 CONT filling acceptably, serving now his fourth term in the office. He has been 2 CONT faithful to every requirement of his post and has the respect of the 2 CONT teachers of the county and the people in a marked degree. In 1901 he 2 CONT was married in this county to Miss Cora Lapham, a native of the county. 2 CONT They have three children, all daughters. Professor Hazard, although 2 CONT occupying a position in which party politics has no proper place, is too 2 CONT much a patriot and too good a citizen to be indifferent to public affairs, 2 CONT and he gives them close attention as a Republican. As such he served as 2 CONT supervisor of his township prior to his election as school commissioner. 2 CONT Fraternally he is active and zealous in the order of Knights of Pythias. 1 FAMS @F43@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I40@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas Matthew /Hazard/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 11 DEC 1860 2 PLAC ,Wayne County,Ohio 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 APR 1951 2 PLAC Fulton/Wakeshma,Kalamazoo,Michigan 1 BURI 2 PLAC North Cemetary,Fulton,Michigan 1 NOTE The following is a summary of an interview conducted by Mrs. Jane S. 2 CONT Hagle, 1307 W. North St. Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Thomas Hazard, on 2 CONT October 21, 1949. 1 NOTE John Hazard was born in Connecticut in 1776; and was one of the first 2 CONT settlers in Wayne County, Ohio. James Hazard was born there in 1822. He 2 CONT came to Michigan with his family in a covered wagon in 1865. In Ohio he 2 CONT had only thirty seven acres, and with a family of boys, he wanted more 2 CONT land. He owned a sawmill in Ohio on the Mohegan river. (Not a circular, 2 CONT but one that worked up and down.) Many times floods washed out the 2 CONT dam, and it would cost as much as a thousand dollars to rapair it. On the 2 CONT trip to Wakeshma Township, they camped out on the way. Sometimes 2 CONT farmers gave them shelter and food for the night. One time they were 2 CONT served vension for breakfast. At that time the Michigan Central Railway 2 CONT was running, but not through Scotts. At first it was necessary to go to 2 CONT Colon to a frist mill, but later there was one at Leonidas. There was 2 CONT also a nearby sawmill, which ground feed after the lumbering season. 2 CONT The first store was Attwoods Mill; the next one at Gardeners Corners. 2 CONT There was one at Lipes Corners later. Originally it had been the first 2 CONT house in the area; a building about 16x30 ft.; one story. It burned in 1866 2 CONT and when it was rebuilt seven or eight years later, it became a general 2 CONT store, where the men gathered to play checkers and talk politics. It was 2 CONT a voting place; voting was by a ticket placed in a ballot box. There was a 2 CONT log house on the Hazard farm when purchased, but James built a new fine 2 CONT house in 1874. At the same time he hauled the wood to Kalamazoo for 2 CONT the boards to be finished for his house, he gave the lumber for the 2 CONT building of the Methodist Church in Fulton. There was good timber on the 2 CONT farm; the walnut and whitewood was used for his home. He planted fruit 2 CONT trees. there was an abundance of dder, wild turkeys, partidges, and 2 CONT squirrels. the school in Fulton had approximately 160 regular students, 2 CONT plus some of the older ones that attended in the winter months. The 2 CONT schoolmaster was Jim Wilson. there were logging Bees; the entire 2 CONT neighborhood would work with fifteen or twenty teams of oxen. They 2 CONT would clear as much as twenty acres in a day. Most of the men drank 2 CONT whiskey as they worked, but James was a teatotaler. The Indians lived 2 CONT mostly on the Nottawa Prairie; they lived in log houses. The poorer ones 2 CONT had tents made with bear skins stretched over poles. Some of the Indians 2 CONT that lived in the woods made maple sugar to sell or trade. At their 2 CONT feasts they had jumping and running contests. One of the schools had 2 CONT only one white boy; the remainder were Indian. A friend of the Hazards, 2 CONT Mackay, lived on the Nottawa Prairie. His parents raised corn, potatoes, 2 CONT and tobacco. He had a story of the first white man seen by two Indian 2 CONT boys. They were hunting with their bows, and met this Tom Hatch and 2 CONT took him home to dinner. Their father scolded them for poking fun at this 2 CONT funny man- he had hair in the wrong places; he was bald with long 2 CONT whiskers. There was a plank road from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids. 1 FAMS @F28@ 1 FAMS @F11@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I41@ INDI 1 NAME James Lincoln /Hazard/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 25 JAN 1853 1 DEAT 2 DATE 16 FEB 1939 2 PLAC Kalamazoo,Kalamazoo,Michigan 1 BURI 2 PLAC South Cemetary,Fulton,Michigan 1 NOTE Account in Kalamazoo Gazette: 1 NOTE "Traffic Victim Here is Third of 4 Brothers to Die in Accidents" 1 NOTE J.
