1 CONC and was invited to Liz's home in Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland where she 
1 CONC met her husband to be: John (Jack) Stark Adamson.  She visited several 
1 CONC times.  Following her marriage she moved to Forth following the birth of 
1 CONC her first son, Hugh Carswell Adamson.

1 CONT Died in Labrador City Hospital of cancer of the bowel; her sister Nancy 
1 CONC (Anne) Hemus was with her at the time of her death which was peaceful.  
1 CONC On 27 November 1993 (during a birthday evening to celebrate her 81st 
1 CONC birthday at 27 Rutland Gate) Aunt Nancy shared the following.  Pat had 
1 CONC written to he saying that she should come to Canada and that Jackie would 
1 CONC cover the cost (which he agreed to but never did).  On arrival (the 
1 CONC Friday of teh weekend that she died), Mum said to Aunt Nancy:  'I knew 
1 CONC you would come. You never wrote.'  Aunt Nancy replied that she had 
1 CONC written once a week without fail.  She later discovered, from Craig, that 
1 CONC Dad had burned her letters without letting Mum know of them. Mum said to 
1 CONC her, 'I cry and I cry but no one comes in the night.'  Aunt Nancy replied 
1 CONC 'well you won't cry anymore.'  She said to my father that he should 
1 CONC arrange a nurse; he complained but did arrange for one.
1 CONT At 06:00hrs on the Sunday morning Aunt Nancy asked my father to take her 
1 CONC to the hospital because she 'felt' something was happening.  He protested 
1 CONC and she then set about cleaning and washing the fridge.  At 07:00hrs he 
1 CONC grudgingly said 'let's go.'  When they arrived in the hospital Mum said 
1 CONC 'Jackie you go over there and smoke your pipe (which he did), but (to 
1 CONC Auncy) don't you go.'   Aunt Nancy said, 'I love you.'  Mum said ' I love 
1 CONC you too but you've always shown it and I never have.  People should  tell 
1 CONC each other they love each other more often.'  Aunt Nancy said that her 
1 CONC head was surrounded by a beautiful halo of many different colours.  An RC 
1 CONC priest on duty said to Aunt Nancy after Mum had died '... so you're her 
1 CONC sister; she wouldn't die until you came.'

1 CONT I remember that I was living on Desmarchais Street in Verdun when I 
1 CONC received news of her death by telephone from my father.  The telephone 
1 CONC was in the hall next to a bookcase.  I recieved the news with no sense of 
1 CONC shock in that she had suffered for some considereable time (in hospitals 
1 CONC in both Labrador City and Montreal).

1 CONT She was cremated in the Mount Royal Crematorium, Montreal in January 
1 CONC 1969.  Her ashes were scattered at the Collins Gates, Bahji in 1972.

1 CONT Her British Passport No. G258737 was issued on 26 June 1962 by the 
1 CONC Foreign Office in Glasgow and describes her as having no distinguishing 
1 CONC marks although her right thumb nail had been crushed by machinery during 
1 CONC her war service with ICI and had a 'washboard' appearance throughout her 
1 CONC life.   She had no sense of smell (from childhood according to Aunt 
1 CONC Nancy).

1 CONT He served on tankers throughout the war years and was torpedoed and sank 
1 CONC on one occassion.  After the war he continued on tankers with CT Bowrings 
1 CONC of London.  In or around 1954 he left Bowrings to go to work for the iron 
1 CONC Ore Compay of Canada.  Originally he was to be dock manager in Seven 
1 CONC Islands (Sept Iles).  For whatever reason this did not work out and he 
1 CONC went to Schefferville (Burnt Creek) as a Pit Foreman.  Before 
1 CONC transferring from Schefferville to Labrador City in 1961/2 he had reached 
1 CONC the level of General Foreman.  In Labrador City he worked in the Mill and 
1 CONC Pellet Plants.  Following a prolonged illness he was pushed out to Safety 
1 CONC and Training.  Eventually he took early retirement and moved to Indian 
1 CONC Harbour Nova Scotia where he tried to find local employment (working for 
1 CONC a while in Handy Andy) but when I bought his house and gave him free 
1 CONC accommodation he devoted himself entirely to his painting (selling them 
1 CONC to friends and tourists).

1 CONC bad smoke inhalation which almost killed him.

1 CONT Visited Aunt Elsie in Abergele on 13 February 1994 who told me that she 
1 CONC did not care much for her mother.  She said she visited her once when 
1 CONC Michael was two.   She said "Call me mother."  Aunt Elsie said, "Why 
1 CONC should I you've never been my mother."  Michael dropped a few crumbs of 
1 CONC something he was eating on the floor to which her mother said "Elsie we 
1 CONC do not do that here."  Elsie said that whatever else you could say about 
1 CONC her mother she was spotlessly clean.  She was living with a man called 
1 CONC Charlie at that time.  When he died she was turfed out of his house and 
1 CONC from that point on seems herself to have been homeless and was known to 
1 CONC have wandered the streets. Elsie met her a second time in Conibur (?) 
1 CONC Street in Bham.  She apparently attended a church in Conibur Street where 
1 CONC the sisters took an interest in her wellbeing.  She said also that it was 
1 CONC somewhere near Mosely Road
1 CONT  - a Mission House around the corner from Conibur Rd.
1 CONT Elsie said that her mother was reputed to have like snuff.
1 CONT Aunt Elsie said that both Edith and Nancy disliked her (Elsie) because 
1 CONC she reminded them of their mother - they looked alike.  Elsie said that 
1 CONC her mother reminded her of a gypsy:  she had jet black hair always tied 
1 CONC in the back, blue eyes and a large nose.  
1 CONT She mentioned also that her mother's brother was a John (aka Jack) Hill 
1 CONC who owned a shop in Aston called "The House That Jack Built".  This was a 
1 CONC clothiers shop and was torn sown under compulsory purchase to build roads 
1 CONC associated with spaghetti junction.   She also had a cousin (Jack's 
1 CONC sister?) called Doris Hill who was a ballerina in Bham and perhaps London.
1 CONT Elsie said that Hettie Lockston Hemus dropped a newspaper clipping 
1 CONC through her door when her mother died.  Apparently she had left some 
1 CONC money in her will to each of her children with the exception of Herbert 
1 CONC (whereabouts still unknown as of Feb 1994) and George (who was by that 
1 CONC time dead).  Aunt Elsie had to go to a solicitors office where the will 
1 CONC was read and she broke into tears when she learned that Gertrude was 
1 CONC dead.  Aunt Edith and Aunt Nancy both said they did not want the money 
1 CONC (œ20 each which was all that was left after the solicitors fees, 
1 CONC including costs to find her relatives, were met).  Aunt Elsie wonders why 
1 CONC they could not have given the money to her since she was at that time on 
1 CONC a very low income and could have used it.
1 CONT Kathleen Hill did come to see the children a couple of times in the 
1 CONC Shenley Homes where she had placed them in Summerhill Receiving Home (the 
1 CONC stage before entry into Shenley Homes) without the knowledge of their 
1 CONC father (who was in the Armed Forces).  The children rejected her and on 
1 CONC one visit my mother said to her "What have you come to see us for - we 
1 CONC don't belong to you!"  She did not return after that.  Apparently their 
1 CONC father took them out of the home when he returned and found what had 
1 CONC happened.  When he left she returned them and he decided that he would 
1 CONC not come back.  All the children remember him fondly as "not such a bad 
1 CONC sort really."  
1 CONT Elsie was only three when she was put into the Shenly Homes and does not 
1 CONC remember them with happiness.  She had rickets and a deformed spine when 
1 CONC she went in and was put in Home 6 (later transferred to Home 1 with her 
1 CONC other sisters). She said that one day her father (who she mistook for an 
1 CONC old tramp; he had become a "rag and bone man") put a sixpence in her 
1 CONC hand.  She immediately ran and told the Superintendent who mistook the 
1 CONC man to have been her brother George and had him thrown in Jail until the 
1 CONC mistake was uncovered.
1 CONT Aunt Elsie was the last of the family to leave the Home and was visited 
1 CONC by both Mum and Aunt Nancy.  She hated Aunt Nancy's visits because she 
1 CONC pushed Jesus on her and made her go to church where Aunt Nancy sang in 
1 CONC the same soprano voice that embarassed me as a boy in Scotland.  She 
1 CONC remembers locking herself in the toilets when Nancy came and being 
1 CONC threatened by her if she did not come out.  As the samllest she remembers 
1 CONC clearly being pushed around and slapped by her older sisters (including 
1 CONC my mother).  She also remembers one night she heard Mum crying (they were 
1 CONC in different parts of Home 1).  She got out of bed to discover that Mum 
1 CONC had a "wicklow?" on her thumb which was causing her terrific pain.  Mum 
1 CONC said to her "Go back to bed Elsie or you'll get in trouble".  This is a 
1 CONC more plausible reason for Mum's corrugated thumb (than the explanation 
1 CONC she got it while working in the Knocks Ammunition Factory (not ICI).  It 
1 CONC was while working in Knocks that she acquired the name Pat - which was 
1 CONC drawn from a hat (she never liked either Gertrude or Girlie according to 
1 CONC Aunt Elsie).
