1 NOTE   John's family moved back and forth from Cleveland OH to FL until he was9years
2 CONT old. Then the family moved to Rialto CA. They lived in a big old house and had
2 CONT a goat for milk. About 1963 they moved to Oxnard, Ventura Co., CA, and later to
2 CONT Port Hueneme, Ventura Co., CA. He played the flute in marching band, and sang
2 CONT and played flute in a group called the "Four Sights and a Sound". They were
2 CONT quite good.
2 CONT John entered the United States Navy in July 1970. He went to Boot Camp in San
2 CONT Diego, and to Hospital Corp School in Oct 1970, graduating in Feb. 1971.
2 CONT He attended Laboratory Technician school in Oakknoll Naval Hospital in Oakland,
2 CONT CA in April of 1972. John was assigned to the USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) in
2 CONT June of 1972 and served there until Feb. 1975, when he went back to NHSD for
2 CONT training as a Radiologic Technologist. He graduated from the course April of
2 CONT 1976 with distinction. At the same time that he was going through the xray
2 CONT class, he was also taking extra courses through a special program provided to
2 CONT the USN by George Washington Univ. and was able to receive a AS degree in
2 CONT Allied Health the following year. He was then assigned to Naval Hospital Port
2 CONT Hueneme in May of 1976. He was in charge of the xray dept at Point Mugu NAS
2 CONT from 1978-1980.  He then was transfered back to San Diego in April 1980 for IDT
2 CONT (Independent Duty Tech.) School. He graduated in the top third of his class in
2 CONT April 1981.  He was then transfered to the USS Fletcher (DD-992), a Spruance
2 CONT Class Destroyer, that was just finishing her sea trials before being put into
2 CONT active duty.  While serving on board the Fletcher, he earned the Navy
2 CONT Commendation Medal for saving 12 people from poisoning. They had eaten a parrot
2 CONT fish which is neuro-toxic. John managed to keep them breathing with the limited
2 CONT suppplies that he had on board at the time, until he could get them off the
2 CONT ship and to a hospital in Paupau New Guenie.  He left the Fletcher in April
2 CONT 1984 and went to NAS Mayport FL, where he served as Medical Supply Chief. He
2 CONT made the rank of Chief in 1985 while stationed there. Being IDT the powers-that
2 CONT -were in charge of the Clinic at Mayport assigned John to many small extra
2 CONT tours of duty on the ships that had didn't have a Corpsman on board for
2 CONT whatever reason. (i.e. Corpsman died, got sick, took leave, etc.)
1 NOTE Rebecca McBride at Palisade Gardens Roller Rink on University Ave in San Diego,
2 CONT the night of Feb. 6, 1971. The next day they attended the wedding of his Chief.
2 CONT He proposed to her from the elevator in building 36 at Naval Hospital San Diego
2 CONT (Balboa Naval Hosp.) on March 26, 1971. They were married Feb 28, 1972, at 6:00
2 CONT pm, at the First Southern Baptist Church in North Park, Park Ave. San Diego, by
2 CONT Rev. Stanley O. White. John's brother Paul was best man, and Becky's best
2 CONT friend Janice Olive was Maid of Honor. Her nieces, Heidi and Louri Lesh were the

2 CONT Died 3 May 1989 at 2115 hours. Was Heavy Duty Mechanic for Conrock, and Daley
2 CONT Corporations in San Diego. They did Road Construction. His military service was
2 CONT from 1930 to 1952. Certificate says he was in county for 17 years, but know for
2 CONT a fact that he bought the house on Galveston St. in 1951 and lived there all
2 CONT but 15 years when he lived in the desert near Blythe CA. He died of pneumonia
2 CONT due to Metastic lung carcinoma. He was cremated and the ashes buried in Ft.
2 CONT Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego CA.
2 CONT Father had farm and required all boys to do work in the fields. George hated
2 CONT working in the fields, especially driving the team for plowing. Would rather do
2 CONT house work than do field work. Was sick in bed with fever for several weeks.
2 CONT Learned to knit, tat, crochet, and sew while sick. Left home when 16 so that
2 CONT "he could smoke and carry a gun" both of which were not allowed in his father's
2 CONT house. Worked for Hugh Bennett driving cattle from TX to Kansas City, KS. Also
2 CONT worked in a garage in Levelland TX repairing Model T Automobiles. Bought his
2 CONT sisters their first sewing machine. Loved to tease his brothers. Knitted Judy a
2 CONT coat when she was about two years old.
2 CONT Loved to camp, hunt, fish, shoot bows and guns, photography, and believed that
2 CONT you were dead when you stopped learning new things.
2 CONT Liked to eat limburger cheese, okra, and any other food that didn't bite him
2 CONT first.
2 CONT Joined the United States Marine Corp. in 1930.

2 CONT through the magazine and George got mad and started telling "her that that would
2 CONT be the last time he stopped and got her some stupid magazine the she wouldn't
2 CONT even glance at!!!."  She finally sat down and started to go through the
2 CONT magazine and found the certificate and was so surprized and proud that she
2 CONT couldn't stop crying.
2 CONT He retired from USMC in Oct. 1952. He often teased Becky by telling her that
2 CONT she was his retirement present.
2 CONT He hated ties, and refused to wear them for most occasions.
2 CONT He loved his liquer, but was rarely drunk.

2 CONT playing games of all sorts, but especially cards. Could sew wonderfully.

2 CONT hunt rabbits while they were patroling the base paremeter. They would come by

2 CONT  A Thanksgiving bride is Miss Marjorie Cole who became the bride of Mr. Melvin
2 CONT Leon Murray at 5 p.m. today. The ceremony was performed in the home of the
2 CONT bride, 417 Washington St.
2 CONT  Miss Cole's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Claude O. Cole of San Diego, and Mr.
2 CONT Murray is the son of Mrs. Flora Murray of Erie, Kansas.
2 CONT  The couple recited their vows before an improvised altar of ferns and yellow
2 CONT and white chrysanthemums. Rev. Dow Hoffman officiated at the wedding.
2 CONT  Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Beth James sang "I Love You Truly," and "At
2 CONT Dawning." Miss Hazel Schofield presided at the peano.
2 CONT  The bride wore a gown of white satin with a lace bodice and short puffed
2 CONT sleeves. Her veil was gathered at the back with a pearl bandeau. She carried a
2 CONT bouquet of gardenias and valley lilies.
2 CONT  Miss Laurana (sic) Cole, sister of the bride attended her. Her dress was of
2 CONT white crepe with lace flounces and her bouquet of white sweet peas.
2 CONT  Mr. William Thomas served as best man at the wedding.  The bride was given
2 CONT away by her father.
2 CONT  A reception followed the wedding, to which about fifty guests were invited.
2 CONT  Mr. and Mrs. Murray are leaving San Diego for a short trip to the north. They
2 CONT will live in San Diego for the winter, after which they will make their home in
2 CONT Kansas.
2 CONT  Mrs. Murray was a student at San Diego High School, while Mr. Murray received
2 CONT his education in Kansas.
