Fought in the Viet-Nam Conflict,and won the Air Medal and others. 1 NOTE I was born 30-June-1940,in Breathitt Co.,Ky. Delivered by a mid wife 2 CONT named, Louella Stevens, In a log cabin that only had half a floor, the other 2 CONT side wasn't finished yet. I don't remember much till Indiana,where we moved in 2 CONT the years,1940-41. As I was still a wee babe. We moved to a farm named "THE 2 CONT WEST FARM" and Dad was like a share cropper there working for a Mr. Redman,can 2 CONT remember my older Brothers & Sisters working in the fields, 1 NOTE I started school after our move to Michigan in the yrs. 2 CONT 1945-47,as I was 7 years old when I entered Kindergarten,at the old Comstock 2 CONT High School,which sits down by J-K Avenue and the waterfall in Comstock,Mi. 1 NOTE Dad & Mom rented from a man and woman named BUD & DUDE 1 NOTE a house down by the Kalamazoo,river,just West of Morrow Dam in 2 CONT Comstock,Mi. The next move was to a house between Comstock & Galesburg, 2 CONT Michigan,on Rosemont St. where I spent most of my younger days growing up,on 2 CONT this street. I started the second grade actually part of kindergarden again 2 CONT at Hoover School. Hoover School is located or rather was located at the corner 2 CONT of North 30th street and East Main in Kalamazoo Co.,Mi. It houses the School 2 CONT for the impaired now in 1992. The winters were terrible when we would have to 2 CONT walk the roads to Hoover for school some of us got pretty sick and cold and a 2 CONT man named Glen Castle was instrumantly in getting us put into the Galesburg- 2 CONT Augusta School system,where we had buses that came and picked us up. He would 2 CONT pick us little kids up and drive us to school when he could,his wife was a nice 2 CONT lady also,they were the first family to have a TV, that I knew and we all used 2 CONT to visit them alot till I realized that we were a burdon on them and stopped 2 CONT going down to watch TV there,as I had over heard something Mrs. Castle said to 2 CONT her husband. 1 NOTE We played alot of games back then Cowboys & Indians,Cops & Robbers.Ect. 2 CONT I never did do good in School was always interested in History but could 2 CONT never keep the subject in my head,Math beign one of my worst subjects,Art was 2 CONT my favorite even in High School I did good in Art & Crafts classes. Then I got 2 CONT my hands greasy and oily from automotive work and there went my art out the 2 CONT window as it was easier to earn a living as a Mechanic then an artists. 1 NOTE I graduated from Buchanan High School,Buchanan,Mi. 1960 June. After One 2 CONT year of job hunting enlisted in the U.S. Army in June of 1961 was sworn in on 2 CONT my 21st birthday,in Fort Wayne Terminal,Detroit,Mi. First went to Fort Knox, 2 CONT Kentucky for my Infantry training,after 4-weeks of basic was transfered to 2 CONT Fort Ord,California. Where I recieved 8-weeks of Advanced Infantry Training 2 CONT after which I was shipped to my parent regiment the 35th Infantry,25th Infantry 2 CONT Division,Schoffield Barracks,Oahu,Hawaii. After a couple of yrs I voluntered 2 CONT for duty as a gunner on a helicopter in Viet-Nam Saw 30 some missions against 2 CONT the enemy. Luck would have it I escaped from there with only a cut knee from 2 CONT where a round hit helicopter and knocked my knee aganst the machine-gun,Which 2 CONT I could have been awarded the Purple Heart but declained,due to the nature of 2 CONT injury. Martin Perkins born to John Sylvester Perkins and 2 CONT Judy King,in the year 1901,Cannel city,Morgan Co.,Ky. Martin worked in quite a 2 CONT few coal mines,in different counties of Kentucky. He also was a farmer as was 2 CONT mostly everyone else back then they raised most of their food. When Martin & 2 CONT Nora and family moved to Indiana he was a share cropper and worked for a man 2 CONT named Redman. 1 NOTE The mines Martin worked in while in Kentucky were,5-mile mines, 2 CONT Wolverine Coal Co.,Daniel Boone Coal Co.,Wobilco Coal Co., Spicer Coal 2 CONT Co. he drove a pony here.,King H. Coal Co. Worked for the WPA also while 2 CONT in Kentucky. The move to Michigan in about 1945 ? was a tearful one as everyone 2 CONT loved the West Farm,Martin got a job at the Kalamazoo Paper Co. Where he worked 2 CONT till his retirement in 1965,after which he took small part time jobs to make 2 CONT ends meet some were night watchmen jobs for other Paper Co's. He and family 2 CONT lived first at a Comstock address where they rented from a Mr. Bud 2 CONT the house was located by the Consumers Power Co. dam and almost every year the 2 CONT Kalamazoo river flooded and surrounded the house with water,to where a boat 2 CONT was needed to reach the house from the dirt road which led down the hill to 2 CONT the house. Martin was sort of a loner as he didn't want to go out and mingle 2 CONT with other people his and Nora's age,so much of the family visits were with 2 CONT family and relatives. He was a good provider for his family working hard all 2 CONT his life as his schooling wasn't enough to land good jobs. So manual labor 2 CONT was the kind he did. 1 NOTE Daniel M. Seems awful young for a child to have a child will check 2 CONT further on this,as of 02/10/1993 I believe one of the dates on something I 2 CONT have is wrong,like maybe Rhodas birth was 1831 or 1841 instead of 1851. 1 NOTE But maybe when George was born in Illinois that he wasn't really John 2 CONT Silcurst Perkins's son but someone else's,and John just accepted and agreed 2 CONT to marry Rhoda,but then no one would because they were related and the reason 2 CONT they ran away to Tenn.,to marry. Henry and Patsy moved to the Right Hand Fork when they first 2 CONT married. 1 NOTE They first settled at the mouth of Young's branch,which was then called Little 2 CONT Wooton Fork. Around 1860 they moved down the road a short distance,where they 2 CONT raised their family at what is called the Henry Combs place. Their house still 2 CONT stands at this time (the writting of this book) in 1993 I don't know if it does 2 CONT now though. Writer states 1 room at that time was older then the \Civil War. 1 NOTE During the Civil War soldiers came through and took all their food,poured out 2 CONT their corn and fed it to their horses. Both 2 CONT born in Letcher Co. Isom and wife Judy settled on the Left Hand Fork of 2 CONT Mason's Creek. Isom lived for 4 yrs longer then his brother Henry. When 2 CONT Isom died his wife Judy,was sure he wanted to be buried close to home,in their 2 CONT family cemetery,Henry's and Isoms family said it was always expressed by the 2 CONT twins to be buried together. Judy gave in and Isom was buried by his brother 2 CONT Henry in the Felix York Cemetery,on the Right Hand Fork.
