In the Pacific he heard the two atomic bombs, visited 2 CONT Tokyo and was aboard ship in Tokyo Bay when peace was signed. 2 CONT Using the G.I. Bill of Rights he went to the Univ. of Cincinnati for a 2 CONT freshman year of engineering and then transferred to Youngstown Col- 2 CONT lege where he got a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1951. He worked 2 CONT for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. in Franklin, PA and in New York City 2 CONT until 1959. He moved his family to Bozeman, MT where he was an Asst. 2 CONT Professor in Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Montana State till 1966. 2 CONT Earned a M.S. in Mech.Engr.in 1964. For a short while he lived in 2 CONT Billings, MT where he was the superintendent of a construction mach- 2 CONT inery repair shop. In 1967 he returned to Franklin, PA to work again 2 CONT for Chicago Pneumatic. He was transferred to Hudson, OH in 1977 until 2 CONT Chicago Pneumatic went out of business. He became an engineering 2 CONT consultant and spent a year in Paris, France working on a U.S.Navy 2 CONT contract. In 1982 he went to Franklin, Indiana where he worked for 2 CONT GrimmerSchmidt Corp. as a V.P.Engineering and then V.P.& 2 CONT Gnl.Mgr.Industrial Division until retiring in 1989. In 1943 he married 2 CONT Geraldine Wagner and they were divorced a year later. He married 2 CONT Juanita Hardin(g) in Cincinnati in 1947 where he ws going to college and 2 CONT she was in training as a nurse. They were divvorced in 1972, she died in 2 CONT 1980. They had two daughters. In 1973 he married Elizabeth Jane 2 CONT (Reichard) Hiltabiddle in Franklin, PA; she was born in Warren, OH. They 2 CONT had no children, "Betty" had two sons by her previous marraige. At age 12 (or 16) he went to 2 CONT live with his Uncle Cash Furman in Franklin, PA and learned the car- 2 CONT penter trade. He served in France in WW1 in the AEF. His final rank 2 CONT was a corporal in the Company F, 112th Infantry, 16th Pennsylvania, 2 CONT Franklin, PA. He served two years, mustered out in 1919. When in France 2 CONT he became an airplane engine mechanic. 2 CONT Back in Franklin, PA he went to work as a chauffer/mechanic for the 2 CONT banker Harry Lamberton. On June 1, 1921 he married Josephine Jane 2 CONT Cummings. They had three children: Cassius Jr.,John David and Enid 2 CONT Louise. 2 CONT After Harry Lamberton's death in 1931, Cash went to work at the Atlan- 2 CONT tic Refinery in Franklin and then Polk State School as a heating plant 2 CONT engineer. He was working there when he died of peritonitis from a 2 CONT ruptured appendix at the age of 44. He is buried in the Franklin Cem- 2 CONT etery in Franklin. 2 CONT OBITUARY OF C.F.WHITEHILL FROM FRANKLIN, PA NEWS HERALD MAY 5, 2 CONT 1937: Cassius Furman Whitehill, 43, of 232 Front St.,Rocky Grove died in 2 CONT the hospital at Polk State School, where he was employed and where he 2 CONT was stricken ill suddenly last Thursday evening. 2 CONT Mr. Whitehill, a well-known veteran of the World War, underwent an 2 CONT operation Friday, and seemed to be recovering satisfactorily until 2 CONT Monday afternoon, when his condition became unexpectedly serious. 2 CONT Mr. Whitehill was born in Clarion County June 22,1893, a son of the 2 CONT late David R. Whitehill and Clementine Furman Whitehill. He came to 2 CONT Franklin at the age of 16, and had resided here since that time. He 2 CONT had many friends, and was familiarly known as "Cash" by the hundreds 2 CONT of persons that knew him. 2 CONT During his World War service, he won recognition among his comrades as 2 CONT "a good soldier," and served virtually the entire time the United 2 CONT States was engaged in the war. He went overseas with Company F, 112th 2 CONT Infantry, when the local company left for France. He enlisted May 29, 2 CONT 1917, and was honorably discharged May 23, 1919, after serving over- 2 CONT seas for a year and a half. PA. They had no children but Warren had a daughter 2 CONT from his first marraige: Gertrude (Cook) Limber who now lives near 2 CONT Carmel, CA. In 1948 Warren and Jo moved to Santa Rosa, CA where he 2 CONT worked in a hardware store and she was a bookeeper in a clothing 2 CONT store. Warren died in 1961 and Jo continued to work until 1972, at 2 CONT which time she returned to Butler, PA where she lives with her only 2 CONT daughter, Enid Spryn and husband Michael. She became so 2 CONT tired they obtained privilege to spend the night at the farm at which 2 CONT David Jr. was living at the time. In their early married life the principle method of travel was 2 CONT an ox team and a heavy wagon. By this method they had to go to Kit- 2 CONT tanning, PA for their supplies. 2 CONT At one time when David was a boy, one common sewing needle was owned 2 CONT jointly by three mothers living at a distance of 4.5 miles apart; 2 CONT Mrs.Reed, living on what is called the Isaac Imholl farm at Miola, 2 CONT Mrs David Whitehill Jr. on the Whitehill farm and Mrs. McNaughton at 2 CONT Helen Furnace. Kittaning was the closest place to obtain another 2 CONT needle. 2 CONT David and Rachel lived together for 57 years. 2 CONT The David Whitehill farm was bought by and deeded to David Whitehill 2 CONT the third on Dec.2, 1851 for the sum of $75 in hand. She was 2 CONT the daughter of John & Eleanor (Clough) Lowry. 2 CONT Alonzo (nicknamed "Lon") was described in a history of Strattanville 2 CONT published in 1928 at a Centennial Celebration as follows: 2 CONT "Alonzo B. Furman,--was the last of the tenth generation of Furmans 2 CONT in America. "Lon" Furman loved music and many of the older here 2 CONT today are recalling having attended "singin' school" of which he 2 CONT was the teacher at times. By men all over the country he is ac- 2 CONT credited as having been a good mechanic, almost a genius, which 2 CONT perhaps accounted some for his few words and short answers. His 2 CONT little old blacksmiths shop was the birthplace of the Oliver 2 CONT Chilled Plow, which he invented sometime prior to the 1870's. The deceased was aged 59 years. 2 CONT James T. Bell was born in Northumberland County, England in 1845 and 2 CONT came to this country when quite young with his parents. Bell kept a diary of his trip and time in Colorado. The 2 CONT original diary is in the hands of Mary Gregory Wagner, of Tallmadge, 2 CONT Ohio. Apparently she lived with her children in Ohio until her 2 CONT death. Mary Gregory Wagner of Tallmadge, OH or her brother Cliff has 2 CONT the original, but copies are in the hands of many family members. 2 CONT Following is the obituary: 2 CONT "Death of Joseph Bell 2 CONT This excellent citizen and respected man died at 8:40 a.m. yesterday, 2 CONT August 7,(1892) at his residence in Sandycreek Township, a short dis- 2 CONT tance south of the city limits. Mr. Bell experienced his first seri- 2 CONT ous illness on Monday night last, when he suddenly became faint and 2 CONT sank to the ground while attending to his stock. He had a recurrence 2 CONT of the attack after entering the house, followed by paralysis of the 2 CONT right side. The paralysis affected the muscles of his throat so 2 CONT seriously that he was unable to articulate, and could only swallow 2 CONT with difficulty. Up to the time of his death he ws deprived of speech 2 CONT but could trace his messaages in a faltering way on a slate, thus 2 CONT showing that his strong mental faculties remained unimpaired. His 2 CONT death was peaceful and painless. 2 CONT Mr. Bell was 73 years of age. He was born in Northumberland County, 2 CONT England March 31, 1819. In his early life his advantages of education 2 CONT were limited, but his vigorous mind and ready apprehension improved 2 CONT every opportunity of mental improvement, and as the years passed he 2 CONT acquired a solid, practical education. With his educational growth 2 CONT came an increasing affection and reverence toward the mighty republic 2 CONT of the New World. In 1849, at the age of 30,he came with his wife and 2 CONT little family to the United States. From that year to the time of his 2 CONT death, a period of 43 years, he lived in Franklin. 2 CONT Throughout his long residence here, Joseph Bell held a deservedly high 2 CONT place in public estimation. All who knew recognized in him a man of 2 CONT integrity in act and purpose. A rare combination of positive and 2 CONT sterling qualities made him a decided character among men, an "iden- 2 CONT tity" of enduring type. All concealment and subterfuge were foreign 2 CONT to his nature. He was instinctively and persistently honest, truth- 2 CONT ful and upright under all circumstances. 2 CONT Among the acquirements of his studious mind, Mr. Bell possessed a 2 CONT knowledge of botany not often surpassed. Elizabet Todd, who 2 CONT married Joseph Bell, bought it with the first money she earned as a seamstress. 2 CONT Her family home was at Quarry House, Coanwood, Northumberland, England. At the 2 CONT time she did this work, a seamstresswould go to her client's home and stay as 2 CONT long as it took to do the work required. It was necessary for her to walk 2 CONT eleven miles to reach this particular home. 2 CONT "At the time of her death, in the late 1890's, the shawl was in perfect 2 CONT condition, and her daughters, not wanting to show partiality, conceived the 2 CONT idea of having it carefully divided, and put into trays, then giving each 2 CONT surviving grandaughter a tray. So you, Jane McClintock Hendren, are the third 2 CONT generation of granddaughters to have it. 2 CONT "It is interesting to know of her marriage to Joseph Bell. They walked twelve 2 CONT miles to Brampton, England, then hired a horse and gig and drove across the 2 CONT border into Scotland, where they were married by the blacksmith in Gretna 2 CONT Green. This was done by each declaring "that they presently do take each 2 CONT other for husband and wife". This was done April 16th 1842, and they had more 2 CONT than fifty years of happy married life. 2 CONT "They left England for America about May 1st 1849, landing in this country 2 CONT sometime in June. He did not graduate from 2 CONT high school, but received a GED through the Air Force. 2 CONT He joined the Army Air Corp in 1925. He became a pilot and was one 2 CONT of the "flying Master Sergeants". These men were all commissioned 2 CONT when WW2 broke out but Allan wasn't because of a heart murmur. This 2 CONT broke his heart because he could no longer fly. In 1943 he became 2 CONT Sgt.Major, the highest ranking enlisted man at Scott Field. He 2 CONT served as crew chief and technical inspector in the Panama Canal Zone 2 CONT and Luke Field in Hawaii. He was the first to test the new invention 2 CONT "parachutes". He received $15 a jump and continued this money making 2 CONT project until he was injured in a jump. 2 CONT He married Cecilia Pithie Mackenzie of Oil City, PA in 1930. Their 2 CONT daughter Patricia Ann was born August 5, 1933 in Honolulu, Hawaii. 2 CONT They traveled from one military base to another as he was assigned. 2 CONT Allan started his military life at Langley Field in Virginia. He also 2 CONT was stationed there in 1953 when he became ill with cancer. After 2 CONT D-day, in July of'44 he returned to Britian to Holyhead, Wales and 2 CONT then Bovingdon, England then Prestwick, Scotland in May '45 until 2 CONT going to the states in November 1946. 2 CONT While in Scotland he married Evelyn Jowett in April 1945. In July '46 2 CONT their son Michael was born in Kilmarnock and 13 weeks later they all 2 CONT went to USA. His career in the USAF had him at at least 12 diff- 2 CONT erent bases in Virginia, Illinois, Kansas, Japan, Oklahoma, Texas, 2 CONT Phillipines, Missouri and finally retired from Lackland AFB in Texas 2 CONT in December of 1960. 2 CONT After retiring from the USAF Glen worked for Phillips Petroleum but 2 CONT then went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air 2 CONT Traffic Control Specialist. He was trained at the FAA Academy and was 2 CONT assigned to Tulsa. He taught at the FAA Academy in 1968 and in April 2 CONT 1970 they were transferred to Puerto Rico. It 2 CONT appears they left PA soon after this date. They went to Indiana. A deed dated 2 CONT Jan.17,1903 between John W. Johnson and Winfield P. Whitehill was made while 2 CONT Winfield still lived in Indiana. The exact date when they came to KS was 2 CONT sometime in 1903. They settled on the farm 5 miles south of Winfield, Cowley 2 CONT Co.,KS where they lived until the early 1920s. They purchased 80 acres 2 miles 2 CONT southwest and lived there until his death in 1933. He was a farmer. His 2 CONT brother, Abraham, built a new house for him in 1907. The home farm was sold in 2 CONT 1936. The new house is the only building remaining on the farm in 1994.
