1 NOTE BIO:Cassius Jr. was the firstborn child of Cassius Sr. and Josephine
2 CONT (Cummings) Whitehill.  He was born in the Franklin, PA hospital on his
2 CONT father's thirtieth birthday anniversary, 22 June 1923.
2 CONT He attended public schools in Franklin amd Rocky Grove and graduated
2 CONT from Franklin High in 1941.  He went to work as an apprentice machin-
2 CONT ist, then set-up man before entering the U.S.Navy in April 1944.  He
2 CONT was honorably discharged in May 1946.  In the Navy he went to boot
2 CONT camp at Sampson, NY; attended and then taught in a radar school in
2 CONT Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  After a year of teaching he joined the U.S.S.
2 CONT Lexington, CV-16 and served aboard her in the Pacific theater until
2 CONT discharged.     In the Pacific he heard the two atomic bombs, visited
2 CONT Tokyo and was aboard ship in Tokyo Bay when peace was signed.
2 CONT Using the G.I. Bill of Rights he went to the Univ. of Cincinnati for a
2 CONT freshman year of engineering and then transferred to Youngstown Col-
2 CONT lege where he got a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1951.  He worked
2 CONT for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. in Franklin, PA and in New York City
2 CONT until 1959.  He moved his family to Bozeman, MT where he was an Asst.
2 CONT Professor in Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Montana State till 1966.
2 CONT Earned a M.S. in Mech.Engr.in 1964. For a short while he lived in
2 CONT Billings, MT where he was the superintendent of a construction mach-
2 CONT inery repair shop.  In 1967 he returned to Franklin, PA to work again
2 CONT for Chicago Pneumatic.  He was transferred to Hudson, OH in 1977 until
2 CONT Chicago Pneumatic went out of business.  He became an engineering
2 CONT consultant and spent a year in Paris, France working on a U.S.Navy
2 CONT contract.  In 1982 he went to Franklin, Indiana where he worked for
2 CONT GrimmerSchmidt Corp. as a V.P.Engineering and then V.P.&
2 CONT Gnl.Mgr.Industrial Division until retiring in 1989.  In 1943 he married
2 CONT Geraldine Wagner and they were divorced a year later.  He married
2 CONT Juanita Hardin(g) in Cincinnati in 1947 where he ws going to college and
2 CONT she was in training as a nurse.  They were divvorced in 1972, she died in
2 CONT 1980.  They had two daughters.  In 1973 he married Elizabeth Jane
2 CONT (Reichard) Hiltabiddle in Franklin, PA; she was born in Warren, OH.  They
2 CONT had no children, "Betty" had two sons by her previous marraige.  In 1992
2 CONT they moved to St. George, UT where they built a home.

1 NOTE BIO:"Cash" was the first child born to David Reeser and Clementine (Fur-
2 CONT man) Whitehill.  He was born at the family farm near Helen Furnace in
2 CONT Highland Township, Clarion Co., PA.  As a child he helped assemble
2 CONT farm machinery that his father sold.  At age 12 (or 16) he went to
2 CONT live with his Uncle Cash Furman in Franklin, PA and learned the car-
2 CONT penter trade.  He served in France in WW1 in the AEF.  His final rank
2 CONT was a corporal in the Company F, 112th Infantry, 16th Pennsylvania,
2 CONT Franklin, PA.  He served two years, mustered out in 1919.  When in France
2 CONT he became an airplane engine mechanic.
2 CONT Back in Franklin, PA he went to work as a chauffer/mechanic for the
2 CONT banker Harry Lamberton.  On June 1, 1921 he married Josephine Jane
2 CONT Cummings.  They had three children: Cassius Jr.,John David and Enid
2 CONT Louise.
2 CONT After Harry Lamberton's death in 1931, Cash went to work at the Atlan-
2 CONT tic Refinery in Franklin and then Polk State School as a heating plant
2 CONT engineer.  He was working there when he died of peritonitis from a
2 CONT ruptured appendix at the age of 44.  He is buried in the Franklin Cem-
2 CONT etery in Franklin.
2 CONT OBITUARY OF C.F.WHITEHILL FROM FRANKLIN, PA NEWS HERALD MAY 5,
2 CONT 1937: Cassius Furman Whitehill, 43, of 232 Front St.,Rocky Grove died in
2 CONT the hospital at Polk State School, where he was employed and where he
2 CONT was stricken ill suddenly last Thursday evening.
2 CONT Mr. Whitehill, a well-known veteran of the World War, underwent an
2 CONT operation Friday, and seemed to be recovering satisfactorily until
2 CONT Monday afternoon, when his condition became unexpectedly serious.
2 CONT Mr. Whitehill was born in Clarion County June 22,1893, a son of the
2 CONT late David R. Whitehill and Clementine Furman Whitehill.  He came to
2 CONT Franklin at the age of 16, and had resided here since that time. He
2 CONT had many friends, and was familiarly known as "Cash" by the hundreds
2 CONT of persons that knew him.
2 CONT During his World War service, he won recognition among his comrades as
2 CONT "a good soldier," and served virtually the entire time the United
2 CONT States was engaged in the war.  He went overseas with Company F, 112th
2 CONT Infantry, when the local company left for France.  He enlisted May 29,
2 CONT 1917, and was honorably discharged May 23, 1919, after serving over-
2 CONT seas for a year and a half.  He was a member of the Franklin Post No. 476,
2 CONT American Legion.
2 CONT Mr. Whitehill is survived by his wife, Josephine Cummings Whitehill;
2 CONT his mother, Mrs.Clementine Whitehill of Strattanville; three children,
2 CONT Cassius F.Jr.,13, John David,10 and Enid Louise,6; two sisters, Miss
2 CONT Mildred Whitehill, of Leetsdale, and Miss Jessie Whitehill, of Pitts-
2 CONT burgh, and one brother, David Whitehill, of Chicago, Ill.
2 CONT The body was removed to the Barron Chapel, where funeral services will
2 CONT be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. M.W.Castrodale, pastor
2 CONT of the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church, officiating.  Friends
2 CONT may call at the Barron Chapel at any time.  The American Legion will
2 CONT provide an escort and firing squad in recognition of the military
2 CONT record of the deceased.  Internment will be in the Franklin Cemetery.

1 NOTE BIO:Josephine Jane Cummings was born prematurely on Dec.29,1899, a date
2 CONT that made it posible for all to remember her age easily.  She was so
2 CONT small that her mother could put a teacup over her head and her mothers
2 CONT ring over her hand as a bracelet.  It was predicted she wouldn't live
2 CONT and if she did she would probably "not be right".  She has outlived
2 CONT all her siblings, raised and supported a family after losing her first
2 CONT husband, finally married again and lost him as well and continued to
2 CONT support herself.  She raised two boys and a girl; Cassius, John, Enid.
2 CONT "Jo" attended Franklin High School where she graduated in 1918.  She
2 CONT worked as a bank teller in a Franklin bank.  She met and married
2 CONT Cassius F. Whitehill from Clarion Co., a chauffeur/mechanic for banker
2 CONT Harry Lamberton.  They spent all their married life living in and
2 CONT around Franklin, PA.  "Cash" Sr. died in 1937 and Jo went back to work
2 CONT as a clerk and bookeeper at Polk State School in Polk, PA.
2 CONT In October of 1944 she married Warren Martin Cook, originally from
2 CONT Clearfield Co. PA.  They had no children but Warren had a daughter
2 CONT from his first marraige: Gertrude (Cook) Limber who now lives near
2 CONT Carmel, CA.  In 1948 Warren and Jo moved to Santa Rosa, CA where he
2 CONT worked in a hardware store and she was a bookeeper in a clothing
2 CONT store.  Warren died in 1961 and Jo continued to work until 1972, at
2 CONT which time she returned to Butler, PA where she lives with her only
2 CONT daughter, Enid Spryn and husband Michael.  Michael became terminally
2 CONT ill so Jo went to a nursing home to live in 1992.

1 NOTE BIO:John Boyd Cummings, the son of John & Mary Cummings was almost
2 CONT certainly born on a farm near Nicklin, PA.  He married Nora Bell and
2 CONT they had five children.  They lived in a house just a stone's throw
2 CONT from the Nicklin Church and across the road from his brother Will.
2 CONT John Boyd worked initially as a farmer and then as an operator of the
2 CONT pumping equipment on a oil lease.  They moved from Nicklin into
2 CONT Franklin (on Franklin Ave.) where he worked in the American Steel
2 CONT plant. The workers in his section of the plant were given the day off
2 CONT to attend his funeral.  Both he and Nora are buried in the Franklin
2 CONT Cemetery.

2 CONT A. Bell.  She was probably born on the Bell farm, at the "Y" of pre-
2 CONT sent routes 8 and 62 just south of Franklin, PA, near the top of the
2 CONT Uniontown Hill.
2 CONT She married John Boyd Cummings from Nicklin, PA.  They lived at Nick-
2 CONT lin where most of their children were born.  When John went to work at
2 CONT the American Steel Plant they move to a house on Franklin Avenue just
2 CONT upstream of the 13th St. bridge across French Creek.
2 CONT John died in 1923 and in years that followed Nora lived with her
2 CONT children.  She died at the home of her daughter Josephine in 1935.
2 CONT The writer was Nora's grandchild and Nora spent a lot of time at our
2 CONT home and we children were sometimes cruel because she tried to correct
2 CONT us when needed and we resented it, what I now regret but believe to be
2 CONT normal.  I remember many happy things as a young child when she would
2 CONT tell me stories about the rain, thunder and the robins digging worms.

2 CONT Rachel M. (Callihan) Whitehill.  He was born on the family farm in
2 CONT Highland Township, Clarion Co., PA.  He spent part of his life as a
2 CONT farmer and this lead to selling farm machinery.  He then became a
2 CONT rural mail carrier and delivered mail with a horse and buggy out of
2 CONT Strattanville, PA.  He then became Postmaster of Strattanville untiol
2 CONT his death on 4-12-1929.
2 CONT His first wife, Celestia S. Kline, apparently died of childbirth.
2 CONT She died 10-2-1884, ten days before their infant daughter, Bertha.
2 CONT He later married Mary Clementine Furman and they had five children:

2 CONT Reeser Whitehill and they had five children.  Evelyn, her third child, died
2 CONT in childbirth and "Clem",along with her two maiden daughters, raised
2 CONT Evelyn's son Gerald Potts.  Of course Harry Potts was involved but
2 CONT Gerald lived with his grandmother and aunts.
2 CONT Clem lived with her daughters in Leetsdale, PA while they taught in
2 CONT the Pittsburgh area schools.  She died there in  1947 and is buried

1 NOTE BIO:David the third was born near Bellefonte, PA on Jan.13,1815, two
2 CONT years before his parents, David Jr. and Sarah (Brisben) Whitehill moved
2 CONT the family to a farm in Highland Twp.,Clarion Co., PA.  He spent all his
2 CONT remaining life on the same farm.
2 CONT He married Rachel M. Callihan on July 21, 1840.  Rachel was born in
2 CONT Bedford Co.  She and her father, Thomas Callihan, had walked from
2 CONT Johnstown, PA, intending to visit her cousin George Callihan who had
2 CONT lived on a farm about one mile north of Helen Furnace.  She became so
2 CONT tired they obtained privilege to spend the night at the farm at which
2 CONT David Jr. was living at the time.  She met young David the third and
2 CONT in due time they were married and braved the hardships of pioneer
2 CONT life.  In their early married life the principle method of travel was
2 CONT an ox team and a heavy wagon.  By this method they had to go to Kit-
2 CONT tanning, PA for their supplies.
2 CONT At one time when David was a boy, one common sewing needle was owned
2 CONT jointly by three mothers living at a distance of 4.5 miles apart;
2 CONT Mrs.Reed, living on what is called the Isaac Imholl farm at Miola,
2 CONT Mrs David Whitehill Jr. on the Whitehill farm and Mrs. McNaughton at
2 CONT Helen Furnace.  Kittaning was the closest place to obtain another
2 CONT needle.
2 CONT David and Rachel lived together for 57 years.
2 CONT The David Whitehill farm was bought by and deeded to David Whitehill
2 CONT the  third on Dec.2, 1851 for the sum of $75 in hand.  It contained
2 CONT 50 acres "allowance be the same more or less" being the allotment No.
2 CONT 2 of the Bingham subdivision of Helen Twp. (formerly Paint), Clarion
2 CONT County and part of warrant No. 3583 granted by the Commonwealth of
2 CONT Pennsylavnia to William Bingham.  The deed was made by Samuel M. Lane
2 CONT (by his Attorney in Fact, A.N.Meylert) Trustees.  Witnesses were
2 CONT Philip Clover and C.E.Beman.  Deed Book Pages 419 & 420.
2 CONT Most of the above was copied from an old handwritten sheet of paper,
2 CONT probably written by Mrs. David Reeser Whitehill or one of her girls.

1 NOTE BIO:Alonzo was the firstborn child of Nathan and Isabel (Longwell) Furman.
2 CONT He was born in Strattanville in 1836.  He married Catherine Lowry on
2 CONT her twentieth birthday, 3-22-1839.  She died in 1906, age 67.  She was
2 CONT the daughter of John & Eleanor (Clough) Lowry.
2 CONT Alonzo (nicknamed "Lon") was described in a history of Strattanville
2 CONT published in 1928 at a Centennial Celebration as follows:
2 CONT    "Alonzo B. Furman,--was the last of the tenth generation of Furmans
2 CONT    in America.  "Lon" Furman loved music and many of the older here
2 CONT    today are recalling having attended "singin' school" of which he
2 CONT    was the teacher at times.  By men all over the country he is ac-
2 CONT    credited as having been a good mechanic, almost a genius, which
2 CONT    perhaps accounted some for his few words and short answers.  His
2 CONT    little old blacksmiths shop was the birthplace of the Oliver
2 CONT    Chilled Plow, which he invented sometime prior to the 1870's.  He
2 CONT    took out the patent through Munn and Co.,Patent Office, Wall Street
2 CONT    New York, but later sold out to the J.W.Oliver Company for a meager
2 CONT    sum, thussecuring enough money to attend the Centennial in Phila-
2 CONT    delphia in 1876.  Mr. Furman is also given much credit for invent-
2 CONT    ing what we know as the Stillson wrench, but nothing definite can
2 CONT    be said of this as he sold his model to a stranger for one dollar,
2 CONT    without having secured a patent right."
2 CONT Lon and his wife had eight children.  Lon married a widow from Fair-
2 CONT field township, Columbiana County, Ohio in September of 1906.  Her
2 CONT name was Anna Wonsettler and they had no children themselves though
2 CONT Anna had children from her first marraige.
2 CONT A book about the history of the Allegheny Valley has the following
2 CONT write-up:
2 CONT    "He was brought up on a farm and educated at Strattanville, and at
2 CONT public school at Clarion, to which place his father had removed in
2 CONT 1847.  Since 1859 he has resided at Strattanville, and he is a black-
2 CONT smith and machinist.  Since 1856, when he cast his first presidential
2 CONT vote for John C. Fremont, he has always been a Republican.  At Strat-
2 CONT tanville he has served on the council, and he has been for a number of
2 CONT years a member of the school board.  From 1858 he has been a member of
2 CONT the Baptist church at Strattanville, and he helped in getting out the
2 CONT lumber to build the First Baptist Church."

1 NOTE BIO:David Whitehill, Jr. was the fifth child of Capt. David & Rachel
2 CONT (Clemson) Whitehill.  Born in Salisbury Twp., Lancaster Co., PA on Feb.17,
2 CONT 1775.  In April 1789 he moved with his parents to the end of Nittany
2 CONT Mountain where the village of Lemont, PA is now located.  He was
2 CONT educated in the schools of Lancaster and Center Counties.  On Dec.20,
2 CONT 1804 he married Sarah Brisben, the daughter of William and Elizabeth
2 CONT (Watson) Brisben of the Pequea Settlement on Lancaster Co.
2 CONT In 1801, at the June meeting, David Whitehill, Jr. was chosen stated
2 CONT clergy of the Slab Cabin Presbyterian Church and his duties were to
2 CONT sign duplicates of the minister's salary and transfer pews.  The main
2 CONT purpose of the meeting was to agree upon rules and regulations for the
2 CONT secular government of the congregation.  At this meeting, his brother
2 CONT James Clemson Whitehill, was chosen a trustee.
2 CONT David moved to where the village of Bellefonte, PA is now located and
2 CONT where some of his children were born.  In the spring of 1817, he and
2 CONT his family moved to a farm in Highland Twp., Clarion Co., PA.
2 CONT Both David and his wife Sarah died in Highland Twp. and they both are
2 CONT buried in the Helen Furnace Cemetery.  They died in 1851 & 1865 resp.

1 NOTE BIO:David Whitehill, Sr. was the eighth child born to James & Rachel
2 CONT (Cresswell) Whitehill. He was born in Sunbury Twp., Lancaster Co.,PA May
2 CONT 24, 1743.  On April 8, 1770 he married Rachel Clemson, daughter
2 CONT of James & Margaret (Heard) Clemson. They married at Frederick, MD.
2 CONT He received one half of his father's farm in Sunbury Twp., Lancaster
2 CONT Co., PA.  In 1771 he was taxed for 200 acres, 1 horse, 1 cattle.  In
2 CONT 1782 he was taxed for 292 acres, 5 horses and 4 cattle.
2 CONT In April 1789 he moved to Center County, near Lemont, PA, where he
2 CONT purchased 1043 acres near the end of Nittany mountain.  He was one of
2 CONT the first elders of the Slab Cabin Presby.Church.  He donated land to
2 CONT the church and the graveyard in 1795.  He was a county official.
2 CONT He was a Captain in the Seventh Battalion of the Lancaster County
2 CONT Militia, commanded by John Boyd.  He served in the Revolutionary War.
2 CONT He and his wife are buried in the Slab Cabin graveyard above.

1 NOTE BIO:James Whitehill, a pioneer ancestor, was born in northern Ireland
2 CONT after his parents fled from Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  He was
2 CONT born Feb.1, 1700. He was probably trained as a blacksmith in Ireland.
2 CONT (James is listed as a blacksmith on the 1751 tax list of Salisbury Twp.,
2 CONT Lancaster Co.,PA.)  Probably between 1718 and 1723 he emigrated to the
2 CONT American colonies with a group which probably included his younger
2 CONT brothers Thomas and John, landing probably at Newcastle on the
2 CONT Delaware River.  He eventually settled in Pequea Township, Chester
2 CONT Co.,PA, on Pequea Creek, where he appears on the Chester County taxlists
2 CONT of 1724 and 1726.  In 1729 this area became part of Salisbury Twp.,
2 CONT Lancaster Co., PA.  This was a short distance from the creek source and
2 CONT near the present site of the Pequea Presbyterian Church (probably
2 CONT founded in 1724; first meeting house built about 1733); also near the old
2 CONT road called "King's Highway."  James and his first wife (name unknown)
2 CONT had one child named James, born 1725, who married Abigail Miller,
2 CONT daughter of John and Ester (Moore) Miller and had issue.  Jame's first
2 CONT wife died and he married Rachel Cresswell, who was born 1709 and died
2 CONT 9-29-1795.  They had ten children.
2 CONT James received warrants for 1100 acres of land, which were granted to
2 CONT him in 1733, 1734, 1743, 1745 and 1762.  (See PA land warrant
2 CONT registers, Lancaster Co. W-2 and W-39, Cumberland Co. W-88, W-192 and
2 CONT W-246; and PA Archives).  He owned land in Cumberland and Lancaster
2 CONT Counties.  Some of the land in Cumberland Co. was later in York County.
2 CONT He owned 565 acres in Salisbury Twp., Lancaster Co. on what was then
2 CONT known as Whitehill's Run, later Henderson's Run.  In 1761 he deeded 250
2 CONT acres and buildings in Salisbury Twp. to his son Robert (unrecorded deed,
2 CONT no. 1364 at Lancaster Co. Historical Society).  A Nov. 6, 1747 application
2 CONT for a land warrant by John Wilson shows that at that time James had
2 CONT land adjoining Caln Township, Chester Co.  (Applications for land
2 CONT warrants, PA, 1734-47).
2 CONT 1736 he was chosen assessor (the board of assessors and county
2 CONT commis- sioners constituting what was called in Provincial times, the
2 CONT county board).  He was elected county commissioner 1739-41; appointed
2 CONT Justice of the Peace, serving 1736-37-41-49-52.  He was also Judge of
2 CONT Lancaster County Court in 1745 and later (ref. Orphanns Court Records,
2 CONT also Road Docket Book 1729-42, Quarters Sessions Office Lancaster
2 CONT County Courthouse, Colonial Records and PA Archives).
2 CONT James died Feb. 2, 1766.  His will was written Jan. 31, proved Feb. 8,
2 CONT 1766. (Will C-1-290)  James and Rachel are buried in Pequea
2 CONT Presbyterian Churchyard and inscribed tombstones.  It is believed that
2 CONT his first wife is buried in the same grave, as was frequently done in
2 CONT Colonial times.

2 CONT 3-14-1822.  He died on an adjoining farm 8-8-1905.  His parents were
2 CONT pioneers of the county.
2 CONT His obituary is as good a biography as available and it follows:
2 CONT                       "John Cummings
2 CONT John Cummings, of Frenchcreek, died at his home Tuesday morning, Aug-
2 CONT ust 8, at 6 o'clock.  He had been in failing health for several years,
2 CONT and the end was not unexpected.  He was surrounded by the several mem-
2 CONT bers of his family and breathed his last in peace and without pain.
2 CONT John Cummings was the son Mr.& Mrs. George Cummings, and was born on
2 CONT the farm adjoining the one on which he died March 14, 1822, and was
2 CONT therefore in his 84th year. His parents were among the pioneers of the
2 CONT county, whose children were as follows: William, Mary Ann, later wife
2 CONT of Joseph Grove; Ellen, wife of Rev. William Grove; Jane, second wife
2 CONT of Joseph Grove; Rachel, wife of Alexander Hood of Canal; John,
2 CONT George and Eliza, wife of John Runninger.
2 CONT The deceased was married April 20, 1848, to Miss Mary Cram, by Rev.W.
2 CONT F. Wilson, then of the M. E. church in Franklin.  To them were born
2 CONT the following children: Horace Lowry, Sarah Elizabeth, John Boyd,
2 CONT William Francis, and Adda Jane, now Mrs.J.E.Weber.  Of these the
2 CONT latter three survive the father.
2 CONT Mrs. Cummings died January 18, 1882, and late in 1883 Mr. Cummings was
2 CONT married to Miss (sic) Anna Stranford, who died July 12, 1901.
2 CONT (Note: Other info says Miss Stranford was a widow whose maiden name
2 CONT was Bunnell.)
2 CONT Mr. Cummings united with the Methodist church at Nicklin in 1852, and
2 CONT until his death, remained a faithful and consistent member. He was for
2 CONT most of that time in official service, and for fully 30 years a trus-
2 CONT tee.  He was fairly successful in material things.  Continuing as a
2 CONT farmer, he secured returns also from oil leases.  for a year or more
2 CONT in 1865-67, he lived near Youngstown, Ohio.
2 CONT He was not given much to travel, however.  Except a visit to Philadel-
2 CONT phia in 1876, he was seldom away from home farther than the county
2 CONT seat.  His later years were quietly spent awaiting the end of earthly
2 CONT care and his entry into that rest that remains for the people of God.
2 CONT The funeral as announced occurred Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
2 CONT Services were held at the Nicklin church; internment in the Franklin
2 CONT Cemetery.  His pastor, Rev. J.M. Crouch, officiated."

1 NOTE BIO:Following is the obituary for James Todd Bell that was printed in one
2 CONT of the Franklin, PA newspapers:
2 CONT "James Todd Bell, one of the best known citizens of the Second Ward,
2 CONT after a lingering illness, died at his home on the extension of Eagle
2 CONT St. at 9 o'clock on Friday night.  The deceased was aged 59 years.
2 CONT James T. Bell was born in Northumberland County, England in 1845 and
2 CONT came to this country when quite young with his parents.  They located
2 CONT in Franklin where the subject of this sketch has lived continuously
2 CONT ever since, with the exception of a few years which were spent in
2 CONT Colorado.
2 CONT Mr. Bell is best known to the citizens of Franklin as the proprietor
2 CONT of the Bell Stone Quarry, which was one of the largest and best known
2 CONT quarries in this section of the country.  He conducted the same for
2 CONT a number of years, but lately the ground has all been sold as building
2 CONT lots and built up with magnificent residences. In all his dealings Mr
2 CONT Bell was a man of strict honesty and integrity; he was universally
2 CONT liked and respected by all.  In his home relations he proved himself
2 CONT a faithful and loving husband and an affectionate father.  In fact
2 CONT there are few better citizens then was the late James T. Bell.  He is
2 CONT survived by the following children: Mrs.J.B.Cummings, D.J.Bell, Shir-
2 CONT ley H. Bell, and Andrew Bell.
2 CONT His recent illness dates back several months ago when he was stricken
2 CONT with paralysis.  He felt the stroke coming on but by his indomitable
2 CONT will he started on his way home and through his courage arrived under
2 CONT his own roof before he gave up to the attack.  Since that time he has
2 CONT been unable to leave the house and his friends realized that his last
2 CONT sickness was upon him.  He made a noble battle against great odds, but
2 CONT finally had to succumb to the inevitable.
2 CONT The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon and the
2 CONT services will be conducted by Rev. R.B.Beattle.  The internment will
2 CONT be in the Franklin Cemetery.
2 CONT The Woodmen of the World will have charge of the service."

2 CONT James T. Bell kept a diary of his trip and time in Colorado.  The
2 CONT original diary is in the hands of Mary Gregory Wagner, of Tallmadge,
2 CONT Ohio.  Copies are in the hands of other descendants.
2 CONT Mr. Bell's wife was Hannah Araminta Pettigrew from Hickory, PA.  She
2 CONT is something of a mystery to this writer.  She is buried beside her
2 CONT husband but she is not mentioned in the obit above and we can find no
2 CONT record of her death or an obit.  She died in 1928,  24 years after her
2 CONT husband.  Apparently she lived with her children in Ohio until her
2 CONT death.  Josephine Jane Cummings, her granddaughter, remembers her
2 CONT living with them but does not remember her death at a time when Jo
2 CONT was 28 years old.  Jo is now 91 (as of 1991).

1 NOTE BIO:Hannah A. Pettigrew was the wife of James Todd Bell.  It was rumored
2 CONT that she had Indian blood and for this reason and/or some other she
2 CONT was disliked by the rest of his family.  She died 24 years after he
2 CONT did and apparently never remarried.  She is buried beside him and has
2 CONT a headstone.  Her granddaughter Josphine Cummings Whitehill remembers
2 CONT her with affection and also that Hannah lived with them when Jo was
2 CONT a child.  Jo says Hannah chewed tobacco and this upset Jo's mother,
2 CONT Hannah's daughter.
2 CONT Jo who is 90 now (1990), does not remember Hannah's death even though
2 CONT she died in 1928 when Jo was 28.

1 NOTE BIO:Joseph was born on 3-31-1819 at Haltwhistle, Northumberland Co.,
2 CONT England.  He was one of seven sons of William and Rachel (Smith) Bell.
2 CONT He married Elizabeth Todd on 4-16-1842.  She was from Quarry House,
2 CONT Coanwood, Northumberland.  They were married at Gretna Green, near
2 CONT Gretna, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.  On or about 5-1-1849 Joseph and
2 CONT Elizabeth, with three children, emigrated to Franklin, Venango Co.,PA
2 CONT via Liverpool, New York, Albany, Erie Canal to Buffalo, steamer to
2 CONT Erie and stagecoach to Franklin, PA.
2 CONT He eventually bought about thirty acres of land a mile south of
2 CONT Franklin, where he farmed and won prizes for vegetables he raised.
2 CONT He and his son, James Todd Bell, owned and operated the Franklin Stone
2 CONT Quarry off Fifteenth St. in Franklin.  Most of the stone sidewalks of
2 CONT Franklin (nearly all gone now) came from his quarry.
2 CONT Joseph was a prominent Mason and president of the Franklin Cemetery
2 CONT Company.
2 CONT Joseph and Elizabeth (Todd) Bell had three sons and two daughters.
2 CONT In order of birth they were: William Temple, James Todd, Jane Floter,
2 CONT Rachel Ann and George B.
2 CONT There is an interesting memoir about Joseph written by his eldest son
2 CONT Wm.T.  Mary Gregory Wagner of Tallmadge, OH or her brother Cliff has
2 CONT the original, but copies are in the hands of many family members.
2 CONT Following is the obituary:
2 CONT                   "Death of Joseph Bell
2 CONT This excellent citizen and respected man died at 8:40 a.m. yesterday,
2 CONT August 7,(1892) at his residence in Sandycreek Township, a short dis-
2 CONT tance south of the city limits.  Mr. Bell experienced his first seri-
2 CONT ous illness on Monday night last, when he suddenly became faint and
2 CONT sank to the ground while attending to his stock.  He had a recurrence
2 CONT of the attack after entering the house, followed by paralysis of the
2 CONT right side.  The paralysis affected the muscles of his throat so
2 CONT seriously that he was unable to articulate, and could only swallow
2 CONT with difficulty.  Up to the time of his death he ws deprived of speech
2 CONT but could trace his messaages in a faltering way on a slate, thus
2 CONT showing that his strong mental faculties remained unimpaired.  His
2 CONT death was peaceful and painless.
2 CONT Mr. Bell was 73 years of age.  He was born in Northumberland County,
2 CONT England March 31, 1819.  In his early life his advantages of education
2 CONT were limited, but his vigorous mind and ready apprehension improved
2 CONT every opportunity of mental improvement, and as the years passed he
2 CONT acquired a solid, practical education.  With his educational growth
2 CONT came an increasing affection and reverence toward the mighty republic
2 CONT of the New World.  In 1849, at the age of 30,he came with his wife and
2 CONT little family to the United States.  From that year to the time of his
2 CONT death, a period of 43 years, he lived in Franklin.
2 CONT Throughout his long residence here, Joseph Bell held a deservedly high
2 CONT place in public estimation.  All who knew recognized in him a man of
2 CONT integrity in act and purpose.  A rare combination of positive and
2 CONT sterling qualities made him a decided character among men, an "iden-
2 CONT tity" of enduring type.  All concealment and subterfuge were foreign
2 CONT to his nature.  He was instinctively and persistently honest, truth-
2 CONT ful and upright under all circumstances.
2 CONT Among the acquirements of his studious mind, Mr. Bell possessed a
2 CONT knowledge of botany not often surpassed.  To his practical application
2 CONT of his botanical and horticultural knowledge, this part of the country
2 CONT is largely indebted for its improved varieties of fruits, flowers and
2 CONT plants.
2 CONT Mr. Bell was not one who sought public positions.  He was, however,
2 CONT frequently called to hold township offices, and his name is identified
2 CONT with the Venango County Agricultural Society, of which he was always
2 CONT on of the most active and useful members.  At the time of his death he
2 CONT was President of the Franklin Cemetery Company.
2 CONT Mr. Bell married at Gretna Green, Scotland, April 16, 1842 to Miss
2 CONT Elizabeth Todd, who survives, with three sons and two daughters.  On
2 CONT the 16th of April last a company of relatives that comprised four
2 CONT generations gathered at the Bell residence and assisted the worthy
2 CONT couple in celebrating the 50th anniversary of their wedding.
2 CONT The deceased had for many years held a prominent place in the Masonic
2 CONT fraternity of this city.  His services were important in their coun-
2 CONT cils, and he was thoroughly versed in the history, objects and work of
2 CONT the ancient order.  He was a member and Past Master of Mrytle Lodge
2 CONT No.316 F. and A.M., and a member of Venango H.R.A. Chapter No. 211.
2 CONT The funeral services, which were held at the residence at 2 o'clock
2 CONT this afternoon, were in charge of the Mrytle Lodge.  The internment
2 CONT was in the Franklin Cemetery."
2 CONT Joseph Bell built a stone wall along the boundary of his land, next to
2 CONT state route 62, in a manner common to English and Scottish farm
2 CONT fields.  It has been torn down by subsequent owners.

2 CONT "Mrs Elizabeth Bell died  last night at her home in Sandycreek Town-
2 CONT ship near Franklin in her 83rd year.  Her husband Joseph Bell died in
2 CONT 1892,she is survived by five children, all of whom live here."
2 CONT "The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Bell occurred this afternoon at the
2 CONT late home of the deceased in Sandycreek Township near this city, the
2 CONT services being conducted Rev. Dr. T. Edwin Brown of the First Baptist
2 CONT Church.  A special choir consisting of Mrs. Katherine Stratton, Miss
2 CONT Shaner, A.F.Logan, and Will Sutley rendered appropriate musical selec-
2 CONT tions.  The internment took place in the Franklin Cemetery.  The pall
2 CONT was borne by two sons and four grandsons of the deceased."
1 NOTE After the death of Jane McClintock Hendren, a granddaughter of Elizabeth Todd
2 CONT Bell, and Jane's husdband Elmer, a tray hanging on the wall with a piece of
2 CONT paisley shawl in it was examined by their children and found to have a note on
2 CONT it's back that said:
1 NOTE               "Story of the Paisley Shawl"
2 CONT "The exact date of the purchase of the shawl, of which this is one corner, is
2 CONT unknown, but we do know that it was sometime before 1842.  Elizabet Todd, who
2 CONT married Joseph Bell, bought it with the first money she earned as a seamstress.
2 CONT Her family home was at Quarry House, Coanwood, Northumberland, England.  At the
2 CONT time she did this work, a seamstresswould go to her client's home and stay as
2 CONT long as it took to do the work required.  It was necessary for her to walk
2 CONT eleven miles to reach this particular home.
2 CONT "At the time of her death, in the late 1890's, the shawl was in perfect
2 CONT condition, and her daughters, not wanting to show partiality, conceived the
2 CONT idea of having it carefully divided, and put into trays, then giving each
2 CONT surviving grandaughter a tray.  So you, Jane McClintock Hendren, are the third
2 CONT generation of granddaughters to have it.
2 CONT "It is interesting to know of her marriage to Joseph Bell.  They walked twelve
2 CONT miles to Brampton, England, then hired a horse and gig and drove across the
2 CONT border into Scotland, where they were married by the blacksmith in Gretna
2 CONT Green.  This was done by each declaring  "that they presently do take each
2 CONT other for husband and wife".  This was done April 16th 1842, and they had more
2 CONT than fifty years of happy married life.
2 CONT "They left England for America about May 1st 1849, landing in this country
2 CONT sometime in June.  Leaving New York they went to Buffalo by boat on the New
2 CONT York and Erie canal, then by steamer to Erie, and then by stagecoach to
2 CONT Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where they settled.

1 NOTE !BIO:Little is known about William Bell.  He is mentioned once in the pub-
2 CONT lication "A Memoir of Joseph Bell".
2 CONT The reference follows: "His father was William Bell, who had been a
2 CONT lead miner at Alston Moor, in Cumberland county, and who afterwards
2 CONT bought a small farm at Eels, or Ealings, in the parish of Knaresdale,
2 CONT Northumberland.
2 CONT William Bell married Rachel Smith, whose father had been a soldier in
2 CONT the English army.
2 CONT They had seven sons, three we know about.  One of the older sons was
2 CONT William, who emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1841.  The youngest son was
2 CONT Matthew who emigrated to the U.S.A. with Joseph in 1849.  Matthew went
2 CONT west to Minnesota which was then the extreme frontier.
2 CONT The one we are concerned with is Joseph who is detailed later.

2 CONT William Furman.  What information exists is largely the result of people
2 CONT tracing history to the Revolutionary War.  William was born in 1752
2 CONT and died in 1826.  He married Rachel Wolverton in 1744.  She was born
2 CONT in 1755 and died in 1819.
2 CONT William served in the 3rd Battalion, Gloucester Co.,N.J.Militia; he
2 CONT also served as Sargeant in Col.Richard Somer's Battalion,N.J.State
2 CONT Troops.  He was with Washington at Valley Forge - verified by National
2 CONT No. 28264.  This record is from the N.J.Adjutant General's Certificate
2 CONT After the Revolutionary War, William and Rachel and their son Jonathan
2 CONT moved to Northumberland Co., PA.  Whether or not they had other child-

1 NOTE BIO:John, known as "Jack",  is the second son of Cassius Sr. and Josephine
2 CONT (Cummings) Whitehill and was born in the Franklin Hospital, Franklin,
2 CONT PA on 31 Aug 1926.  He attended public school in Franklin and Rocky
2 CONT Grove.  After his fathers death in 1937 he lived for a year with his
2 CONT Aunt Ken and Uncle Allen Cummings near St. Louis, MO.
2 CONT Jack spent his first couple of years in school memorizing his readers
2 CONT because it wasn't recognized that he badly needed glasses, once he had
2 CONT glasses his schooling took a dramatic turn for the better.
2 CONT Jack entered the U.S.Navy before finishing high school, he completed
2 CONT his high school education after returning from the service.  He was in
2 CONT "lighter than air", the blimps used as sub hunters; he spent time
2 CONT flying out of Lakehurst,NJ.
2 CONT Jack worked as a machinist, then as a surveyor for the PA Highway Dept
2 CONT from where he moved into managing highway maintenance.  He later moved
2 CONT to a private company, Emlenton Limestone where he was company trea-
2 CONT surer and from where he retired.
2 CONT One of Jack's sideline activities is that he is Chairman of the Board
2 CONT of the Allegheny Automobile Association.
2 CONT Jack married Margaret Veronica Bower of Oil City, PA on 14 Jun 1952.
2 CONT Margaret is the daughter of Edward and Marie A.(Marshall) Bower.  Mr.
2 CONT Bower was a merchant in Oil City, PA.  Margaret was the third daughter
2 CONT and was born 25 Feb 1930.

2 CONT Her father died when she was six years old, shortly after that the
2 CONT family went to live on a farm, near Utica, PA with Gene and Mary
2 CONT Clulow and their sons Charles and Wayne.  Enid spent many of her
2 CONT childhood years there.
2 CONT In 1944 her mother married Warren M. Cook and Enid lived with them, on
2 CONT the Pittsburgh Road just  south of Franklin, PA.  She graduated from
2 CONT Franklin High School and went on to become a Registered Nurse from
2 CONT a hospital in Sharon, PA.
2 CONT Enid married Michael Spryn from Butler, PA in 1952.  Mike was an
2 CONT officer  in the U.S.Army during WW2, Korea and Vietnam, he retired as
2 CONT a Colonel.  His career as an military man meant the family lived in
2 CONT many parts of the country as well as Casablanca.  Through all this
2 CONT they managed to raise eight children:three boys and five girls.

2 CONT His birthdate is unknown, he married Elizabeth Coulter and that is all
2 CONT we know about her.  They had eight children.
2 CONT On August 31, 1826 it was recorded that George Cummings bought land
2 CONT in Frenchcreek township from Thomas McCormick Treasurer (of PA?).

1 NOTE BIO:John Allan Cummings was born May 31, 1905 in Nicklin, Frenchcreek
2 CONT Township, Venango County. Pennsylvania.  He was always called
2 CONT Allan.  Allan was loved by all that met him.  He never had an enemy
2 CONT or never had an unkind word about anyone.  He did not graduate from
2 CONT high school, but received a GED through the Air Force.
2 CONT He joined the Army Air Corp in 1925.  He became a pilot and was one
2 CONT of the "flying Master Sergeants".  These men were all commissioned
2 CONT when WW2 broke out but Allan wasn't because of a heart murmur.  This
2 CONT broke his heart because he could no longer fly.  In 1943 he became
2 CONT Sgt.Major, the highest ranking enlisted man at Scott Field.  He
2 CONT served as crew chief and technical inspector in the Panama Canal Zone
2 CONT and Luke Field in Hawaii.  He was the first to test the new invention
2 CONT "parachutes".  He received $15 a jump and continued this money making
2 CONT project until he was injured in a jump.
2 CONT He married Cecilia Pithie Mackenzie of Oil City, PA in 1930.  Their
2 CONT daughter Patricia Ann was born August 5, 1933 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
2 CONT They traveled from one military base to another as he was assigned.
2 CONT Allan started his military life at Langley Field in Virginia. He also
2 CONT was stationed there in 1953 when he became ill with cancer.  He died
2 CONT April 10, 1954 and is buried in Oil City, PA with his wife.

1 NOTE BIO:Dorothy Cummings, called "Dot", was the fifth and last child of John
2 CONT Boyd and Nora (Bell) Cummings.  She married Clifford Gregory in 1925.
2 CONT "Cliff' was a signpainter with artistic talent, he got into neon sign
2 CONT making by adding glass blowing to his talents.  They lived in Franklin
2 CONT ,Pa; Sand Springs, OK and Santa Rosa, CA.  Dot died in Santa Rosa of
2 CONT cancer in 1974.  She was 65.  She is buried in Santa Rosa, CA.  In
2 CONT 1979 Cliff was buried there too.
2 CONT Dot and Cliff were a pair that had adventure as a part of their lives,
2 CONT they struck out for parts unknown and did many things that many people
2 CONT only read or dream about.  A hundred years earlier they would have
2 CONT probably have been in a covered wagon going west.

1 NOTE BIO:"Cliff" was born on a farm on Bully Hill near Franklin, PA.  He had
2 CONT artistic talent and it showed up with a big painting on the front of
2 CONT his father's barn; it was a picture of a flying biplane with country-
2 CONT side below, very current at the time.
2 CONT Cliff painted signs and his wife, Dot, helped him spell.  He did show
2 CONT cards and bilboards and houses.  During WW2 he  had governmnet con-
2 CONT tracts to paint steel construction.  They lived in Franklin, Pa; Sand
2 CONT Springs, OK; Cochranton, PA (where they had their house burn down)
2 CONT and finally Santa Rosa, CA; among other places.
2 CONT Cliff was an ardent and successful hunter and fisherman.  He lived
2 CONT life to the fullest and sometimes dangerously.  He had many people
2 CONT convinced that the only way he would go would be in bed and peacefully
2 CONT and it nearly came true.  He died sitting on a couch, after having
2 CONT just purchased a new golf club, talking to his daughter.  He was 75.

1 NOTE BIO:Glen was the third child of Roy McClintock and Mary Bell Cummings.  He
2 CONT spent some of his childhood in Sand Springs, OK and some in Franklin,
2 CONT PA.  Glen was known as "Kinky" or just "Kink".
2 CONT After graduating from Rocky Grove High School in 1938 he "pumped gas"
2 CONT for a short while and the in Sept. of 1938 he attended a radio
2 CONT operator/mechanic school in Pittsburgh until finishing in Dec. 1939.
2 CONT In July of 1940 he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps (later US Air
2 CONT Corps and then finally US Air Force).  At Scott Field he went to Air
2 CONT Corps Technical School studying radio.  He went overseas in Jan.'42 in
2 CONT Iceland until July '43, then on to Scotland.  Suddenly in March of '44
2 CONT his group was assigned to a crash course in Combat Infantrymanship!
2 CONT Finally after Casablanca, Cairo and Tehran they ended up in Poltava,
2 CONT Russia operating a radio station for shuttle bombing raids.  After
2 CONT D-day, in July of'44 he returned to Britian to Holyhead, Wales and
2 CONT then Bovingdon, England then Prestwick, Scotland in May '45 until
2 CONT going to the states in November 1946.
2 CONT While in Scotland he married Evelyn Jowett in April 1945.  In July '46
2 CONT their son Michael was born in Kilmarnock and 13 weeks later they all
2 CONT went to USA.  His career in the USAF had him at at least 12 diff-
2 CONT erent bases in Virginia, Illinois, Kansas, Japan, Oklahoma, Texas,
2 CONT Phillipines, Missouri and finally retired from Lackland AFB in Texas
2 CONT in December of 1960.
2 CONT After retiring from the USAF Glen worked for Phillips Petroleum but
2 CONT then went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air
2 CONT Traffic Control Specialist.  He was trained at the FAA Academy and was
2 CONT assigned to Tulsa.  He taught at the FAA Academy in 1968 and in April
2 CONT 1970 they were transferred to Puerto Rico.  He returned to Tulsa in
2 CONT April '72 and retired there in Nov.1978.
2 CONT Not finished yet, he went to work for the Tulsa Police Dept. as a dis-
2 CONT patcher from Mar.'79 till October '81 at which point he retired for
2 CONT the third time.  In 1990 he is doing volunteer work for the police.

2 CONT She married Julius George Graul of Mascoutah, IL on Sept.13, 1952.
2 CONT Julius was a career Navy man and they were stationed in many places,
2 CONT continuing her military background.  They had three daughters and one
2 CONT son.  They settled in San Diego, CA in 1957 and were divorced in 1968.
2 CONT Pat then went to work for the Vista Hill Foundation and worked her
2 CONT way up to Executive Assistant to the President of the Foundation.
2 CONT She married Royden Udell Morrison on Nov.27, 1976.  He was a widower
2 CONT with two sons, one David, the younger still at home.  Her son David
2 CONT was still at home too.  After a year Roy her David and she adopted
2 CONT his David.
2 CONT Pat has 15 grandchildren, at this writing in Feb.1990;  11 by her
2 CONT natural children, 2 by her adopted son and 2 step-grandchildren by
2 CONT Roy's son Mark.

2 CONT Whitehill with Minnie, Merril and Lucetta's mother, Frances Knight in front of
2 CONT the Knight home.  This was taken about 1896.  They lived at this time with
2 CONT Lucetta's mother.  The house had two separate living quarters.  There is also a
2 CONT clipping of Minnie and Merril, that stated they attended Mt.Joy (PA) school in
2 CONT the year of 1898-99.  Winfield worked in the PA oil fields at the time.  It
2 CONT appears they left PA soon after this date.  They went to Indiana.  A deed dated
2 CONT Jan.17,1903 between John W. Johnson and Winfield P. Whitehill was made while
2 CONT Winfield still lived in Indiana.  The exact date when they came to KS was
2 CONT sometime in 1903.  They settled on the farm 5 miles south of Winfield, Cowley
2 CONT Co.,KS where they lived until the early 1920s.  They purchased 80 acres 2 miles
2 CONT southwest and lived there until his death in 1933.  He was a farmer.  His
2 CONT brother, Abraham, built a new house for him in 1907.  The home farm was sold in
2 CONT 1936.  The new house is the only building remaining on the farm in 1994.  The
2 CONT barn burned in the 1940s.

1 NOTE !BIO: Abraham Lincoln Whitehill: Abraham came to KS sometime between 1903 and
2 CONT 1907 when he built his brother Winfield's house.  He was a carpenter.  He built
2 CONT several houses and barns in the area of Winfield, KS.  It is told he needed
2 CONT help only to raise heavy timbers.  He was chided because he built the Shivers'
2 CONT barn and later married Mrs. Shivers, a widow.  He lived in Arkansas City, KS.
2 CONT Mrs. Shivers lived on a farm that joined the Whitehill farm.  He loved baseball
2 CONT and listened to all the St. Louis games on the radio.  He and his wife had no
2 CONT children but enjoyed all of his family members.  He always baked a custard pie
2 CONT for the dinners he attended.

1 NOTE !BIO:James Clemson Whitehill was born in Lancaster County, in 1771 he
2 CONT went with his father and family to Centre Co.  He inherited a farm from
2 CONT his father which was located in Nittany Valley, Centre Co.,PA, where he
2 CONT resided until 1821, when he removed to Venango (now Clarion) Co. and
2 CONT located on a farm near Edenburg and there passed the remainder of his
2 CONT days.  He learned the trade of blacksmith, was an expert worker in iron &
2 CONT steel, and is said to have made the first double bitted axe ever forged in
2 CONT the state.  He turned out from his forge hinges by the hundreds, nails,
2 CONT cranes, fire shovels, and tools of every sort.  After removing to Clarion
2 CONT Co. he practically abandoned his trade and confined himself almost
2 CONT entirely to farm labor.  He was industrious and thrifty and his farm was
2 CONT one of the best cultivated and improved in that section of the state.
2 CONT Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church  and in
2 CONT politics he was a Whig.

1 NOTE BIO:The following is the obituary for George B. Bell that appeared in the
2 CONT July 23rd edition of a Franklin, PA newspaper.
2 CONT "George B. Bell: Franklin, July 23 (Special).  George B. Bell, a life
2 CONT long resident of Sandycreek Township died at noon on Sunday at his
2 CONT home in Uniontown settlement, near this city, after an illness of less
2 CONT than two weeks.  Death was caused by peritonitis induced by heart dis-
2 CONT ease.  He was a member of the firm of Bell & Kratz, job printers of
2 CONT this city........He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Bell, born on the
2 CONT farm where he died.  Seventeen years ago he married Laura Birtcil who
2 CONT survives with two children; also two brothers W.T.Bell and James Bell
2 CONT and sisters Rachel and Jane.
