These forms are Anglicised versions of the ancient Gaelic family name Ua Dalaigh or ODalaigh, pronounced "O 2 CONT Dhaulee." 1 NOTE "Such changes from the Gaelic to English forms in Irish surnames originally began as a result of tyrannical laws, designed by the English rulers, which outlawed Gaelic names and customs as a means of penalizing the Irish people into a state of subjug 2 CONT ation. Beginning with the reign of the English King Edward IV (1465), the law demanded that every Irishman living within the territory known as the "Pale" take an English name and comply with other English customs or forfeit his possessions. 1 NOTE "The final doom of the Gaelic surnames came as a result of the widespread establishment of the English language among the Irish. This circumstance caused the English form of names to be taken for granted and considered as natural. Thus, today, O'Dala 2 CONT igh descendants bear the Anglicised names previously mentioned instead of the Gaelic O'Dalaigh of their ancestors.... 1 NOTE "The family of Daly, or O'Daly, is of very ancient origin, deducing its descent from Niall Naoigialach (Niall of the Nine Hostages), monarch of Ireland in the fourth century, who was also Common ancestor of the O'Neils of Tyrone and the O'Donnells of 2 CONT Tyrconnell, from whom the pedigree of this family is lineally traced in the Herald's Office. Dalaigh was 10th in descent from Niall whence the name Daly and from him also the O'Donnells are sometimes styled by the Irish Annalists - Siol na Dala or C 2 CONT lan Daly. Of his descendants there were several Kings of Meath and from thence a branch removed into Thomond and afterward into Connaught."... 1 NOTE "Niall Mor," as John O'Hart, the Irish genealogist records - "succeeded his Uncle Crimthann; and was the 126th Monarch of Ireland. He was a stout, wise and warlike prince, and fortunate in all his conquests and achievements, and therefore, called 'Gr 2 CONT eat.' He was also called Niall Naoi Ghiallach or Niall of the Nine Hostages from the royal hostages taken from nine several countries by him subdued and made tributary; viz. 1 Munster, 2 Leinster, 3 Conacht, 4 Ulster, 5 Britain, 6 the Picts, 7, the D 2 CONT alriads, 8 the Saxons, and 9 the Morini - a people of France, toward Calais and Piccardy; whence he marched with his victorious army of the Irish, Scots, Picts, and Britons, further into France, in order to aid the Celtic natives in expelling the Rom 2 CONT an Eagles, and thus to conquer that portion of the Roman Empire; and, encamping on the River Leor (now called Lianne), was, as he sat by the riverside, treacherously assassinated by Eocha, son of Enna Cinsalach, king of Leinster, in revenge of a form 2 CONT er 'wrong' by him received from the said Niall. The spot on the Leor (not Loire) where this Monarch was murdered is still called the 'Ford of Niall,' near Boulogne-sur-mer. It was in the ninth year of his reign that St. Patrick was first brought to I 2 CONT reland at the age of 16 years, among two hundred children brought by the Irish Army out of Little Brittany. Niall Mor was the first that gave the name of 'Scotia Minor' to 'Scotland,' and ordained it to be ever after so called; until then it went by 2 CONT the name of 'Alba'.... 1 NOTE "The O'Dalaigh ancestry of times more remote than the age of Niall is linked to the "House of Heremon" by Ireland's ancient bardic genealogists. He was a member of the Va Company 1609; he came to the Colony at an early date; was member of the House of Burgesses 1629-30, justice of York (whree he l 2 CONT ived some time), 1634, and member of the Council from 1631 until his death. He was Gov from May, 1635, to Jan 1637, and in the latter year was sent to England (along with Matthews and Utie, and Peirce, who had gone over a year before) to stand trial 2 CONT for their share in Harvey's deposition; but nothing appears to have come of it. On August 27, 1640, the King wrote to the Governor of Virginia directing him to send over West, Matthews, Peirce, and Menefie to answer to an information in the Star Cha 2 CONT mber. This likewise seems to have amounted to nothing, for in the next year (1641) he was appointed Muster Master-General of Virginia. John West, Esq., and John West, Jr., wer 2 CONT e witnesses to a deed from Pindeabank, an Indian, to Edward Wyat (son of Rev. Hawte Wyatt). At the session of March, 1659-60, the Assembly passed an order declaring "Whereas the many important favours and serves rendered to the contrey {sic} of Virgi 2 CONT nia by the noble family of the West, predecessors to Mr. John West, their now only survivor, claim at least a gratefull remembrance of their former merits be still continued to their survivor, It is ordered, That the levies of the said Master West an 2 CONT d his family be remitted, and that he be exempted from payment thereof during life." Smtih, of Richmond VA, writes that their "old book says" that Obadiah Smith who married Mary Cocke was the son of John Smith of Charles city, who cam 2 CONT e there from England. In a footnote, the article states that Captain Roger smyth (who had been a captain (1692) under Sir Francis Vere in the Netherlands) a member of the Virginia Council in 1621, had a plantation in Charles City County. John Smith ( 2 CONT or Smyth), gentleman of Nibley, spent large sums of money in Virginia, though he never came to the colony himself. He was interested in the Tracy-Berkeley-Smith-Thorpe plantation at Berkeley. Some of his family probably cam to Virginia. From one of t 2 CONT he above it is likely that Obadiah Smith was descended. Neill (Virginia Carolorum) thinks that Roger Smyth was a son of John Smyth, Esq., of Nibley, in Gloucestershire. 1 FAMS @F171@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I262@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Cocke/(SMITH)/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1690 2 PLAC Henrico Co., VA, USA. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1754 2 PLAC Henrico Co., VA, USA. 1 NOTE Will recorded in Henrico Co., Va.
