They 2 CONT were Aunt Dee and Uncle Bare to everyone. Sometimes a close friend would 2 CONT call him "Grizzly" but he was seldom called by his given name. 2 CONT Aunt Dee and Uncle Bare were married on December 24, 1931 and had no 2 CONT children of their own. I was always curious that the brothers did not communicate 2 CONT because they seemed so happy to see each other at meeting and my uncle 2 CONT always spoke of his brother with fondness. My uncle was a very private 2 CONT person and didn't discuss his family. 2 CONT The house Max and Wendell lived in is close to my home now, in fact, 2 CONT I pass by almost every day on my way to work. During World War II he was a 2 CONT tool and dye maker for the E.Z. Atkins Saw Company. He was deffered from 2 CONT the military because of his job. He was a mathematical genius and could 2 CONT fix anything mechanical. He also was a very good carpenter. 2 CONT Their home was always a haven for anyone down on their luck. Many 2 CONT times we had two or more families with us. They provided as long as 2 CONT there was a need and always with a smile. They never expected anything 2 CONT in return. At no time during the war did excitement run higher than during 2 CONT the period of this raid. All kinds of false and bewilering rumors passed 2 CONT current with remarkable rapidity, and many expected to see the enemy in 2 CONT the county in a short time. A few days were sufficient to pour six 2 CONT companies into Mitchell from this county, and they were joined 2 CONT immedidatley by four companies from Orange, Washington and Monroe 2 CONT Counties. In my research work I have found 2 CONT that Johann Franz Tschudi was a Swiss landscape gardner for a Royal 2 CONT Frenchman Count Boulogne (Broulogne?) who owned an estate and castle at 2 CONT Fountainebleau, southeast of Paris, France. ... There were five or more boys in 2 CONT the family, but Frances was the only daughter. 2 CONT The Brulongs had lived for many years in an old castle, but as the 2 CONT expenses of living there were so great, they built a new home nearby and 2 CONT kept the old castle as a show place or museum. Here the little Countess 2 CONT Frances spent long happy hours and knew the old place so well that she 2 CONT often acted as guide to visitors. 2 CONT A young Swiss lad was employed on the estate as landscape artist, a 2 CONT handsome fellow with black curly hair by the name of Frank Tscheude, and 2 CONT young Frances fell in love with him. The girls family had high ambitions 2 CONT for their only daughter, they objected to the romance and never forgave 2 CONT Frances when she married Frank Tscheude. 2 CONT The young couple were given a small house on the estate and were 2 CONT treated like all the other tenants or peasants worked about the place. 2 CONT Here the two oldest children, Victor and Margaret were born, and after a 2 CONT few years, broken hearted Frances and her family set out for America. 2 CONT After a lengthy journey at sea, they finally reached America and 2 CONT lived for a short time with a family in Philadelphia, who had compassion 2 CONT on the young foreigners. Frank Tscheude set out for the wilderness where 2 CONT he erected a cabin and returned to get his little family. The lady who 2 CONT befriended them had become attached to the baby Margaret, and asked that 2 CONT she be left with her until they had a better way of traveling as she did 2 CONT not think the child would survive the journey. 2 CONT So, somehow, probably on foot the greater part of the journey, they 2 CONT traveled to establish their new home. They had brought with them seeds 2 CONT from France, [the] land was cleared, flower and vegetable gardens 2 CONT planted. The little family grew in number. There were about ten 2 CONT children in all Victor, Margaret, Catherine, Susan, Frank, John, Joseph, 2 CONT Lena and Betty. This was in Lancaster County, PA. 2 CONT Once each year the father made the long journey to Philadelphia to 2 CONT get Margaret and always returned alone*. So Frances never saw her eldest 2 CONT daughter again, as the journey was perilous. Besides the long distance 2 CONT over terrible roads, there were also wild beasts to combat. While her 2 CONT husband was away from home, Frances with ax in hand chased many a wild 2 CONT beast from her door. She was a large, well built woman and quite 2 CONT fearless. 2 CONT As time went on, Frances might have been happy in her new home, if 2 CONT her husband Frank had been able to settle in one place. No sooner were 2 CONT they established when he would search for a new place to settle and build 2 CONT another cabin. So the little Brulong girl who had lived so well as a 2 CONT child, grew up to live in want and poverty. She was a great story teller 2 CONT and her children delighted in sitting at her feet and hearing stories of 2 CONT the home she had left in France. 2 CONT An epidemic broke out in the settlement and Victor was sent some 2 CONT miles away to buy asafetida. He knew the word in Swiss or German was 2 CONT TEUFEL'S DRECK so he translated it literally and asked for BEBBEL'S DONG. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Tscheude children attended school taught by a Mr. Ridley. He laughed 2 CONT at the way they spelt thier name and changed it to JUDY and to this day 2 CONT it is spelled JUDY by all the Tscheude descendents. 2 CONT 2 CONT My. Ridley taught the three "R's" very thoroughly. He taught them to 2 CONT spell ra-ra, izzard o r zor, razor, and big A, little a, ron, Aaron. In 2 CONT geography they learned to sing the states thus: Maine, Augusta, on the 2 CONT Kennebec River, New Hampshire, Concord on the Merrimac River, etc. 2 CONT United States Washington the Government Republician. They sang thier 2 CONT multiplication tables too and John Judy of this family was our 2 CONT grandfather, passed these lessons on to his children. Mr. Ridley was 2 CONT probably well educated and much more efficient than our Hoosier 2 CONT Schoolmasters of the 1860 abd 70's when mother and her sisters were 2 CONT attending school near Ferdinand in Dubois County. And so the lessons 2 CONT they received at home were quite a help to John Judy's children. There 2 CONT was one little fellow who attended this school in Pennsylvania who wasn't 2 CONT very bright, but his family were able to buy him pocket knives and many 2 CONT things the other parents could not afford. So the boys would make thumb 2 CONT papers (something like a bookmark) and trade him for his trinkets. 2 CONT 2 CONT In spite of Frank Tscheude's wandering ways, he was the [soul] of 2 CONT hospitality. His neighbors were always welcome at his home and Frances 2 CONT always had food prepared to serve them. One of his remarks was 2 CONT "Chentlemen, sit on der table" which meant they were invited for the meal 2 CONT and should sit at [the] table. He was proud of the flower gardens too, 2 CONT and ivited the schoolmaster to help himself, in these words, "Have some 2 CONT blums, Mr. Ridley." "Blums," said Mr. Ridley, "ha, ha, ha. You mean 2 CONT posies." (so I judge Mr. Ridley was quite, quite English). 2 CONT 2 CONT A visting priest came on horseback several times a year to say Mass and 2 CONT dispense with Sacraments, and the Judys made him welcome at thier home. 2 CONT Mass was said in the barn and all the neighboring families came for the 2 CONT occasion. One time the Bishop came and the children were all so 2 CONT frighted, they could hardly kneel before him for confession. Grandfather 2 CONT said it was as bad as facing a lion, but the Bishop proved to be very 2 CONT gentle. 2 CONT 2 CONT Betty died when she was about four years old. That night she asked John 2 CONT Judy to sit beside the bed and hold her hand as she was so afraid. John 2 CONT was then a boy of 10 or 12. "There is nothing to be afraid," he said, 2 CONT but [he] sat beside the bed to please the little sick girl and in the 2 CONT morning following, she died. He was always glad afterwards that he had 2 CONT been some comfort to her. 2 CONT 2 CONT Victor was killed while still a young man, by having a wagon tongue run 2 CONT through him while pulling a wagon down grade. He was married and the 2 CONT father of several children. This was another tradegy in the life of 2 CONT Frances Brulong Tschuede. Victor was a clever boy and delighted to tease 2 CONT his young brothers and sisters by saying "I'm one of the Brulong boys". 2 CONT The little ones would cry and say "no, no, no, bist you die Victor". [You 2 CONT are Victor]. 2 CONT 2 CONT The other children all lived to be quite old. Grandfather was 75 and 2 CONT Catherine lived to be 90. She lived in the Allegheny Mountains. The 2 CONT others scattered through Ohio and several came to Indiana. John and his 2 CONT brother Frank were very close to one another and they married sisters, 2 CONT Margaret and Barbara Temple. They lived near Ferdinand, Ind. 2 CONT 2 CONT John named his only son Frank and Frank named his son John. Frank died 2 CONT when his son was quite small and John was broken hearted. Years later 2 CONT when grandfather was an old man, Mother bathed his feet and noticed a 2 CONT cord tied tightly around his leg. He told her he had worn it since the 2 CONT death of his brother, Frank, so he would never forget him in his prayers. 2 CONT 2 CONT Margaret Judy, the daughter who was raised in Philadelphia, probably 2 CONT married and settled in New York. Years later when Mother's sister, 2 CONT Vernocia (Aunt Fronie) lived in Broolyn she met some of her [Margaret 2 CONT Judy's] children quite by accident and their name was Gillespie. They 2 CONT knew quite a bit of the family ancestry and had some old pictures of the 2 CONT family. 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the Tschuede girls married Presley Frazier and lived in Indiana. 2 CONT Joe the youngest brother, lived in Ohio for many years and probably died 2 CONT there. One of his sons is a brilliant doctor. 2 CONT 2 CONT Great-grandfather Tschuede (Judy) moved to Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, 2 CONT before the children were grown. Frances must have died shortly before or 2 CONT after this time and great-grandfather married a widow with several 2 CONT children. She was very good to the family. When the last of the Brulong 2 CONT boys died in France (all unmarried) the estate was to go to Frances and 2 CONT efforts were made to trace her in America. The change in spelling their 2 CONT name lost them a fortune. The children could prove nothing. The parents 2 CONT were dead, even the old schoolmaster was gone, so the estate was given to 2 CONT France. 2 CONT 2 CONT We have tried for years to learn more of the Bruling family. Just who 2 CONT were they, what part of France was this old castle located in, do some of 2 CONT the buildings still exist? Roman Kempf, a cousin of mine has made many 2 CONT trips abroad but could unearth nothing at all. Tscheudes still live in 2 CONT Switzerland and are very prominent people. 2 CONT 2 CONT Frances was a god-fearing woman and raised her children with discipline. 2 CONT A lie to her, was a great wrong, so we know that all the tales of her 2 CONT home were true. Her children loved and respected her and often found her 2 CONT in tears when she did not know they were near. Bare was for many years prior to his death a skilled 2 CONT agriculturist and a well-to-do resident of Charlestown township, Clark 2 CONT county. He was one of those unassuming men who find ample scope for 2 CONT thier abilities in performing industriously and consistently the duties 2 CONT which providence placed before them. He lived to a ripe age, conscious 2 CONT of a life well spent in an effort to rightly rear and to enrich his 2 CONT family, and enjoying the friendship and unfailing loyalty of a large 2 CONT circle of friends. He was born on the 17th of September, 1823, near 2 CONT Washington, Indiana. His father was a Virginian. In his sixth year our 2 CONT subject came with his parents to Owen township, Clark county, in which 2 CONT county the remainder of his life was spent. He married Ann M. Jacob and his wife were the parents on nine children. 2 CONT In regular order they were: John H., born on May 13, 1848; Almira M. on 2 CONT September 24, 1849; William H. on the 25th of May, 1851; H.T. born May 2 CONT 20, 1853; Sarah A. on the 13th of April, 1855; Robert A. and Charles 2 CONT (twins), born August 23, 1857; Ida V. born September 13, 1859 and Harriet 2 CONT E. December 27, 1862. Our subject and his wife on their marriage settled 2 CONT on the farm where Mrs. Bare still lives and where he afterwards died on 2 CONT the 4th of October, 1891. The farm contians two hundred acres of choice 2 CONT land. Jacob Bare was a deeply religious man through life and was a 2 CONT deacon of the local Presbyterian congregation; his entire family also 2 CONT belong to that faith. In politics he was a Republican. His death was a 2 CONT loss to his sorrowing wife, on whom the duty developed of caring for her 2 CONT children. From her husband's death in 1891 to the present day, Mrs. Anna 2 CONT M. Bare has admirably demonstrated her fitness as the head of the 2 CONT family. During that time she has shown herself to be possessed of a 2 CONT natural ability and talent to deal with all the problems which have faced 2 CONT her. She is now past the age of eighty-two years, and lives a life of 2 CONT much less strenuousness than was her custom hitherto. She was born near 2 CONT Lexington, Kentucky, on August 30, 1826, and was as we have stated, the 2 CONT daughter of John and Sarah (Martin) Baird. Her father was born near 2 CONT Coleraine, Londonderry county, Ireland, in 1789. In the year 1810, at 2 CONT the age of twenty-one, he crossed the intervening ocean to the United 2 CONT States and landed in Philadelphia, Pa, where for some time he worked in a 2 CONT factory, and in that city married Sarah Martin a native of the place. 2 CONT They came to Tennessee and later to Kentucky, resided for some time in 2 CONT Ohio and finally came to Clark County, where he settled in Owen 2 CONT township. Here he erected a building for a woolen factory, and was in 2 CONT his ninety-third year at the time of his death... 2 CONT Mrs. Ann M. The 2 CONT following year he sold half of this land to his two sons David and Jacob, 2 CONT Jr. It was described as going from a large white oak, westerly crossing 2 CONT the creek to a large black walnut, including all water priviledges and 2 CONT ground necessary for water works on the margin of the creek, excepting 2 2 CONT acres which which were conveyed to Michael Gettner and Frederick 2 CONT Raudenbeare for a church and school house. 2 CONT Jacob Bare, Sr. had very substantial holdings in Augusta County, VA, 2 CONT at this time--close to 2,000 acres--which called for the services of 2 CONT three or four men, half a dozen slaves and about a dozen horses. The 2 CONT first purchase found was for a 260 acre tract in "Beverley Manor" 2 CONT acquired in 1791 from the heirs of William Wright. His major holding was 2 CONT 902 acres in three lots purchased from Jacob Kinney and wife Ann. The 2 CONT lots were located on the waters on the South River in the Shenandoah 2 CONT Valley. This must have been a beautiful location and one wonders why he 2 CONT left it to move to frontier Indiana and make a new start. It is not 2 CONT known when he was born but as son Owen was born in Philadelphia in 1782, 2 CONT he must have been close to 60 at the time of his move to Indiana. It 2 CONT would appear that his wife had already died and did not accompany him on 2 CONT his westward journey. His youngest son John remained in Virginia taking 2 CONT care if Jacob Sr's property there and eventually inheirting it. John and 2 CONT his wife Rebecca died in Augusta County, as recored in the Bethel Church 2 CONT Register in 1858 and 1852 respectively. 2 CONT The other children came to Indiana. Owen, probably the oldest, left 2 CONT Virginia first. Hew was in Tennessee when his first san Jacob was born 2 CONT in 1809 and eventually settled in Clark County, with his wife Catherine 2 CONT (?Pierce). The family moved on to Jefferson County, IL near Woodlawn. 2 CONT Henry Bare and his wife Catherine Fix settled in Jefferson County, IN. 2 CONT Mary Bare married in 1804 David Hatton and thier son and two daughters 2 CONT were living in Clark County by 1853. 2 CONT Jacob Bare had died by October 10, 1831, when his heirs appointed 2 CONT Jacob, Jr. as their attorney in the settlement of the estate in Indiana 2 CONT including for acres in Illinois Grant #58 beginning at two beechtrees on 2 CONT the bank of Bull Creek...to a beech on the bank of the Ohio River, then 2 CONT south to a stake, etc... 2 CONT 2 CONT [The Virgnia homestead is later described in his grandson Jacob M. He was buried in the Calvary Methodist Church.] 2 CONT 2 CONT Research by Helen Synder for Lloyd Bare of Rockford, IA: 2 CONT 2 CONT ANALYSIS OF RECORDS ON JACOB BARE, SR. 2 CONT 2 CONT Jacob Bare, Sr., who died in Clark County, Indiana between 2 CONT 1826-1831, and who left Augusta County, Virginia, circa 1823 is not to be 2 CONT confused with Jacob Bare of Rockingham County who married Anna Barbara 2 CONT Miller. Jacob Bare of Rockingham, died in Rochingham.... 2 CONT The earliest deed record for Jacob Bare, Sr. (listed as a "stiller" 2 CONT in the personal property tax lists until 1823), is found in Deed Book 2 CONT 1-A., page 35, August 16, 1791, when he bought land of hiers of William 2 CONT Wright--260 acres. The land was located on South River of the Shenandoah 2 CONT between present day Greenville and Stuarts Draft. Deed records show that 2 CONT Jacob and Barbara Bare were still in Augusta County in 1823, when the 2 CONT made a deed to Geroge Crobarger for 173 acres on South River. 2 CONT Apparently, Barbara was deceased in 1826 when Jacob Sr., sold two lots of 2 CONT land to his son, John Bare ( who stayed in Augusta County) south River. 2 CONT [Jacob] was deaceased before 1831 when the heirs began selling theirs 2 CONT interests in his land to their brother and uncle, John Bare. 2 CONT 2 CONT "History of The Three Falls Cities..." 1882 Owen Township listing: 2 CONT 2 CONT VILLAGES: 2 CONT 2 CONT Germany [Indiana] was laid out by Jacob Bear, Sr in 1829. It has 2 CONT nineteen lots and is crossed by two streets, Main and Main Cross 2 CONT streets. Both these villages [Herculaneum & Germany] are now of little 2 CONT consequence. Bull Creek with its high bluffs passes close by, and almost 2 CONT makes one village out of two--if villages they can be called. Neither 2 CONT has a blacksmith shop. Germany has a grocery. The main business of the 2 CONT station is to ferry people across the river, as they come from New Market 2 CONT and Stricker's Corner. 2 CONT 2 CONT These villages took their names from the German people who early made the 2 CONT narrow bottoms their home. Standing on the high banks of Bull Creek and 2 CONT looking down in the valley which follows it, the places can hardly be 2 CONT called either neighborhoods or hamlets. They are just between the two, 2 CONT and will, appartently, stay where they are for a number of years to come. 2 CONT 2 CONT Letter from Mary Louise Todd: 2 CONT 2 CONT The Clark County Library in Charlestown sent me pages from the Pisgah 2 CONT Church records. It appears from the land deeds of Clark County that 2 CONT Jacob Bare, Sr. who died there at some time in 1831 had given the Pisgah 2 CONT Congregation 2 acres from his original purchase in the county. I presume 2 CONT that would be in Owen Township but I have no proof. The church continued 2 CONT until about 1841 when there was a split in the membership. Jacob Bare Jr 2 CONT and wife Mary joined the New Owen Creek Church. Others in the 2 CONT congregation moved to a new site near the town of Bethlehem. 2 CONT 2 CONT Reverend Al Elswick in Augusta County found that Jacob, Sr. used the 2 CONT signature (Bčar) with the umlaut of the a [ča], I am told that this would 2 CONT give the pronunciation of the name as Bare as we would pronouce it. I 2 CONT doubt that he ever formally changed the spelling. They weren't very 2 CONT fussy about it in those days. When he pronouced it , it sounded like 2 CONT "Bare" so that's the way the clerk or tax collector or whoever wrote it. 2 CONT Sometimes it was spelled in the records as Bear. To make our job harder, 2 CONT there were several other families of the same name in Augusta County so 2 CONT it was a job to sort them out. However, the one we are interested in was 2 CONT located on the South River. He had close to 2,000 acres and quite a 2 CONT number of horses and quite a few slaves who no doubt were occupied in the 2 CONT mill. The old mill is pretty well gone--no roff, a few walls etc. It 2 CONT can still be identified. John Bare who was the one son who remained in 2 CONT Virginia, built a house nearby--ca 1840's, our researched thought--and 2 CONT that is still there but no longer in the possesion of the family, I 2 CONT believe. 2 CONT 2 CONT Genealogy of Johannes Baer 1949-1910 (no relation as of yet): 2 CONT 2 CONT As to the name, we think the German name of our ancestors was spelled 2 CONT Bčar, and this name, we have been informed by a German, who also speaks 2 CONT English, depends for its meaning on whether it is used in speaking of a 2 CONT person or a beast. To illiustrate his meaning, he gave this example: 2 CONT "Henry Bčar, while hunting on the mountain, shot a bčar. The first Bčar 2 CONT being a person's name, would be transcribed into Enlgish "Baer," the "ča" 2 CONT in English being "ae." The second bčar meaning an animal, would be 2 CONT translated "bear." 2 CONT 2 CONT VIRGINIA GENEALOGY 2 CONT 2 CONT AUGUSTA COUNTY 2 CONT 2 CONT Though Augusta County was created in November 1738 form Organge County, 2 CONT its county government wasw not ofrmed right away because the area was 2 CONT spasely popluated. On October 30, 1745 the justiceds for the county were 2 CONT named, and the county's court first met on Dec 9, 1745. Augusta and 2 CONT Frederick County, which also was created in 1738 from Orange County, took 2 CONT up all the land west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Augusta 2 CONT County was an area so large it included, in addition to the present-sized 2 CONT county, 21 other Virginia counties, most of the counties in West 2 CONT Virginia, the entire state of Kentucky and the territory of West 2 CONT Augusta. West Augusta was an area stretching to the Ohio River, which at 2 CONT one time was claimed by both Virginia and Pennsylvannia. Even today, 2 CONT Augusta County is the second largest county in Virginia.the 21 2 CONT present-day counties which were once part of Augusta County are: 2 CONT Alleghany, Bath, Bland, Botetourt, Buchanan, Rockingham, Russell, Scott, 2 CONT Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe. "The vast county of Augusta 2 CONT remained intact until 1770, when Botetourt, was formed. Thereafter the 2 CONT formation of new counties was acclerated. Bath Coutny was finally formed 2 CONT by an act of 1790 (which took effect in 1791) and Augusta County was 2 CONT reduced to its present bounds." 2 CONT 2 CONT Population in April 1746 was 6,000 and almost doubled by 1800, reaching 2 CONT 11, 712. Settlement started in 1732 with the first settlers being 2 CONT Scots-Irish, followed by some English, Welsh, and Dutch. The Church of 2 CONT England "was never particularly strong in Augusta in Colonial times, 2 CONT wherea other denomiations flourished." These included the Presbyterians, 2 CONT Methodists, German Lutherans and Baptists. Many Augusta families moved 2 CONT to Kentucky and the Northwest Territory during and after the Revolution. 2 CONT "From 1800 to 1860 emigration and immigration were rapid and continuous. 2 CONT The low price of rich land in Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and 2 CONT Missouri lured the inhabitants, who moved on; bu the Germans form 2 CONT Pennsylvannia soon took thier places."
