Mr. Hale, the son of Alfred S. Hale and Roberta Greenleaf Hale, was born and raised in Rockaway, New Jersey, attended Newark Academy and graduated in June, 1937, from the Massachusets Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. Mr. Hale spent his career in Airlines Engineering at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT, and was responsible for the introduction of aircraft engines into service on airlines ranging from the Douglas DC-3 to the Boeing 747. At one point, while on one of his many trips to Holland, he became enamored of a large Perlee street organ, which, during the war, had fallen into disrepair. He paid to have it refurbished to its original beauty and shipped to the US where it was often displayed and played at festivals and museums and, for fun, at his daughter's wedding.

Mr. Hale had a lifelong affection for the sea. He was active in boating, owned several boats and was an instructor with the Hartford Power Squadron. As a staunch environmentalist, he was active in monitoring the ponds with the Rhode Island Salt Pond Watchers, for which he was twice commended by Rhode Island State Senate. Mr. Hale was also the founder and first president of the Green Hills Acres Association in Wakefield, Rhode Island.
